In the previous article, I described the steps needed to install an LCD touchscreen on the Raspberry Pi. In this article, I will show you how to adjust the screen rotation of the LCD to landscape mode, and will show you how to calibrate the touchscreen pointer for optimal accuracy. Just follow the steps below to compete the process of setting up your Raspberry Pi LCD touchscreen:
1. First we need to change the setting for screen rotation in the /boot/cmdline.txt file. This setting is called fbtft_device.rotate=X. By default, this is set to X=0, which results in a portrait mode screen orientation. In order to switch the orientation to landscape mode, change fbtft_device.rotate=0 to fbtft_device.rotate=90. Enter sudo nano /boot/cmdline.txt at the command prompt. There should only be one line in this file. Go to the end of it and you will find the fbtft_device.rotate=X setting. Change the value from 0 to 90:
After the Pi finishes rebooting, you should notice that when you move your finger across the touch screen, the pointer should follow correctly in both axes. If you are using the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, you will need to complete the calibration steps below before the pointer follows your finger correctly (and make sure that you have enabled startx to load automatically – see step 6 in this article).
You can rotate the screen 90 degrees (as we did in this tutorial) and the power connector will be at the bottom of the screen, but you can also rotate it 270 degrees so that the power connector is at the top of the screen. To do this, simply enter fbtft_device.rotate=270 in the /boot/cmdline.txt file. Then change the DISPLAY=:0 xinput --set-prop "ADS7846 Touchscreen" "Evdev Axis Inversion" 0 1 line in the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file to DISPLAY=:0 xinput --set-prop "ADS7846 Touchscreen" "Evdev Axis Inversion" 1 0. All you need to do is switch the values of the 0 and 1 at the end of this line.
4. Now we can use ts_calibrate. Enter ts_calibrate at the command prompt (make sure you are still in root mode) to run the ts_calibrate program. The program will consecutively display five crosses on different parts of the screen, which you need to touch with as much precision as possible:

A standard Raspberry Pi project that uses a typical HDMI monitor probably has a display with the correct orientation. But that’s not always the case. Perhaps you’ve installed an unusual monitor and need to flip things around.
After all, screen rotation is a feature most operating systems support for good reason. Word processing (reports, school assignments, even screenplays) benefit from a display rotated 90 degrees.
Your easiest option for rotating the display on a Raspberry Pi is via the operating system. In Raspberry Pi OS there is a specific menu command in the desktop environment. Make the right selection here, and you can rotate the display clockwise, anti-clockwise, or flip it entirely.
Ubuntu is an increasingly popular option for Raspberry Pi users as an alternative to Raspberry Pi OS. Steps for rotating the display in Ubuntu differ slightly.
Users with a Raspberry Pi 4 will find that computer has its own command line screen rotation instructions. These are an alternative to the steps outlined above.
To pre-configure the Raspberry Pi display settings, you can edit the config.txt file before the first boot. This can also be edited at any other time, although the changes will not be instantaneous.
If you’re using Windows, you’ll find config.txt in the Pi’s boot folder, the only part of the SD card that is readable. It can be edited in Windows Notepad or any other text editor.
On Linux (including Raspberry Pi OS), you can open config.txt in a desktop text editor or in the terminal. To edit config.txt in a tool like nano, which is preinstalled, use: sudo nano /boot/config.txt
Browse through the text file until you find a setting called display_hdmi_rotate. (If this doesn’t exist, you can add it on a new line at the bottom of the page).
For example, if you were using the official Raspberry Pi 7-inch Touchscreen Display and wanted to flip (or invert) the display, you would use: display_hdmi_rotate=2
Third party displays require slightly different instructions. For example, if you set up a Hyperpixel or other Raspberry Pi display HAT, the command required is the simpler display_rotate=x.As before, 0 resets the orientation, with 1, 2, and 3 available as rotation options.
The rest of this guide looks at settings and commands, but there is a chance you won’t need them. After all, there is a chance that your Raspberry Pi display doesn’t need rotating. Instead, you just need to rethink your project to ensure everything lines up the way you need it to.
So, consider the project, the cabling you’re using, and any chassis or case. Could a different cabling solution improve positioning of the display? Could you stick with the Pi’s default orientation if the cables were otherwise arranged?
There is no need to put up with upside-down or incorrect orientation from your Pi’s display. Simply use one of these options to rotate the display, using desktop menus, terminal commands, or configuration statements.

I think the touch part of the screen behaves as a different part (a input device) on top ot the display"s output device. So you have currently just rotate the latter not the input

You haven"t mentioned/linked to the library you are using which might help people answer. First of all, check if the library you are using has the ability to control display layout - it might already and you won"t need the following:
Somewhere in your library"s display initialisation function it will write the value 0x36 followed by another byte. The 0x36 is the MADCTL command and the following byte is the parameter that controls the display layout. You can change this value to get the effect you want. I"d suggest changing one bit at a time - it helps keep track of which bit has what effect.

Since the Raspberry Pi image and version are frequently updated, if you encounter a situation where the LCD cannot be used normally, please download the latest version of the image provided by us or from the official website of Raspberry Pi and install the latest driver provided by us.
When the Raspberry Pi starts normally, the PWR light is always on, and the ACT light is flashing. If it is found that both lights are always on, it may be that the TF card is not successfully programmed to the image or the TF card is in poor contact with the Raspberry Pi.
It is recommended to use a 5V 2.5A power adapter for the Raspberry Pi. If the Raspberry Pi is powered by the USB port of the PC, the Raspberry Pi may not be able to start normally due to an insufficient power supply.

LCD, or Liquid Crystal Displays, are great choices for many applications. They aren’t that power-hungry, they are available in monochrome or full-color models, and they are available in all shapes and sizes.
Today we will see how to use this display with both an Arduino and an ESP32. We will also use a pair of them to make some rather spooky animated eyeballs!
There are also some additional connections to the display. One of them, DC, sets the display into either Data or Command mode. Another, BL, is a control for the display’s backlight.
The above illustration shows the connections to the display. The Waveshare display can be used with either 3.3 or 5-volt logic, the power supply voltage should match the logic level (although you CAN use a 5-volt supply with 3.3-volt logic).
Another difference is simply with the labeling on the display. There are two pins, one labeled SDA and the other labeled SCL. At a glance, you would assume that this is an I2C device, but it isn’t, it’s SPI just like the Waveshare device.
This display can be used for the experiments we will be doing with the ESP32, as that is a 3.3-volt logic microcontroller. You would need to use a voltage level converter if you wanted to use one of these with an Arduino Uno.
The Waveshare device comes with a cable for use with the display. Unfortunately, it only has female ends, which would be excellent for a Raspberry Pi (which is also supported) but not too handy for an Arduino Uno. I used short breadboard jumper wires to convert the ends into male ones suitable for the Arduino.
Once you have everything hooked up, you can start coding for the display. There are a few ways to do this, one of them is to grab the sample code thatWaveshare provides on their Wiki.
The Waveshare Wiki does provide some information about the display and a bit of sample code for a few common controllers. It’s a reasonable support page, unfortunately, it is the only support that Waveshare provides(I would have liked to see more examples and a tutorial, but I guess I’m spoiled by Adafruit and Sparkfun LOL).
Open the Arduino folder. Inside you’ll find quite a few folders, one for each display size that Waveshare supports. As I’m using the 1.28-inch model, I selected theLCD_1inch28folder.
The error just seems to be with a couple of the Chinese characters used in the comments of the sketch. You can just ignore the error, the sketch will compile correctly in spite of it.
You can see from the code that after loading some libraries we initialize the display, set its backlight level (you can use PWM on the BL pin to set the level), and paint a new image. We then proceed to draw lines and strings onto the display.
After uploading the code, you will see the display show a fake “clock”. It’s a static display, but it does illustrate how you can use this with the Waveshare code.
This library is an extension of the Adafruit GFX library, which itself is one of the most popular display libraries around. Because of this, there isextensive documentation for this libraryavailable from Adafruit. This makes the library an excellent choice for those who want to write their own applications.
As with the Waveshare sample, this file just prints shapes and text to the display. It is quite an easy sketch to understand, especially with the Adafruit documentation.
The sketch finishes by printing some bizarre text on the display. The text is an excerpt from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and it’s a sample of Vogon poetry, which is considered to be the third-worst in the Galaxy!
Here is the hookup for the ESP32 and the GC9A01 display. As with most ESP32 hookup diagrams, it is important to use the correct GPIO numbers instead of physical pins. The diagram shows the WROVER, so if you are using a different module you’ll need to consult its documentation to ensure that you hook it up properly.
The TFT_eSPI library is ideal for this, and several other, displays. You can install it through your Arduino IDE Library Manager, just search for “TFT_eSPI”.
There is a lot of demo code included with the library. Some of it is intended for other display sizes, but there are a few that you can use with your circular display.
To test out the display, you can use theColour_Test sketch, found inside the Test and Diagnostic menu item inside the library samples. While this sketch was not made for this display, it is a good way to confirm that you have everything hooked up and configured properly.
A great demo code sample is theAnimated_dialsketch, which is found inside theSpritesmenu item. This demonstration code will produce a “dial” indicator on the display, along with some simulated “data” (really just a random number generator).
In order to run this sketch, you’ll need to install another library. Install theTjpeg_DecoderLibrary from Library Manager. Once you do, the sketch will compile, and you can upload it to your ESP32.
One of my favorite sketches is the Animated Eyes sketch, which displays a pair of very convincing eyeballs that move. Although it will work on a single display, it is more effective if you use two.
The first thing we need to do is to hook up a second display. To do this, you connect every wire in parallel with the first display, except for the CS (chip select) line.
The Animated Eyes sketch can be found within the sample files for the TFT_eSPI library, under the “generic” folder. Assuming that you have wired up the second GC9A01 display, you’ll want to use theAnimated_Eyes_2sketch.
The GC9A01 LCD module is a 1.28-inch round display that is useful for instrumentation and other similar projects. Today we will learn how to use this display with an Arduino Uno and an ESP32.

After execution, the driver will be installed. The system will automatically restart, and the display screen will rotate 90 degrees to display and touch normally.

Assuming you’ve already downloaded and flashed Volumio to your Raspberry PI (we suggest to use the newest Raspberry PI 3), the first step is the wiring:First, let’s attach the ribbon cable going from the Raspberry PI Display to the PI itself. You’ll have 4 coloured cables to connect too. They are 5v, GND, SDA and SCL. You can look at the below image to identify the proper pin on the Pi itself.
Notoriously, feeding your PI with an adequate Power Supply is mandatory to have a reliable system. That’s especially true when we connect a power-hungry device like the Raspberry PI Display. Luckily, there’s a way to understand if your PSU is good enough: just power on your pi and observe the screen, if you see a coloured square on the top-right side of the screen, it means that power to your PI is not enough. Don’t you see it? Then all is good.
The installation will last about 7 minutes, so wait patiently until you see “Installation Complete”. Now you can enable or disable the Display output to your likings.
I must admit that altough this display is not particularly brilliant when it comes to resolution and colour accuracy, it looks indeed very nice with Volumio’s UI. Also, usability is very good on the Raspberry PI 3 and the UI runs smoothly also with big libraries… So, folks, enjoy!
If you don’t have a Raspberry PI, or you’re simply looking for alternatives to the Official Raspberry PI Display, there are at least two extra options for you:
The Odroid display is not only a viable alternative, it also have several advantages over its PI counterpart:Since it takes power from USB and video signal from HDMI, it can be used virtually with any Computer with an HDMI output, not just the Odroid or the Raspberry PI.
UPDATE: Lot of time since I published the original article. The Odroid 7” does not seem to work properly with Raspberry PI (not tested with the Odroid). So, if you’re looking for a display for the Raspberry PI, get the official one.
The Waveshare 7” display has become rapidly a widely adopted display, thanks to its cheap price. However this particular touchscreen has shown several reliability issues (altough this seems fixed in latest models, thanks to a firmware update), it requires a particular touchscreen driver which is not always included in major distros and its colour reproduction is not the best.
