This serial LCD kit includes a 16x2 LCD together with a small "serial interface" PCB fitted with a PICAXE-18M2 chip. The on-board PICAXE-18M2 chip is provided pre-programmed with the open-source AXE133 firmware, which allows this on-board 18M2 chip to act as a "slave" serial driver for the LCD display. This allows your main project to display text on the serial LCD via simple serout commands, such as

The Parallax Serial LCDs (liquid crystal displays) can be easily connected to and controlled by a microcontroller using a simple serial protocol sent from a single I/O pin. The LCD displays provide basic text wrapping so that your text looks correct on the display. Full control over all of their advanced LCD features allows you to move the cursor anywhere on the display with a single instruction and turn the display on and off in any configuration. They support visible ASCII characters Dec 32-127). In addition, you may define up to eight of your own custom characters to display anywhere on the LCD. An onboard piezospeaker provides audible output, with full control over tone note, scale and duration using ASCII characters Dec 208–232.
The LCDs currently for sale are updated to Revision F. Basic functionality remains the same, but power requirements and the layout of the backpack have changed. Please see the documentation for information on your model.
This device can be connected to a PC serial port using a MAX232 line driver. The circuit isn’t supported by Parallax, but it’s possible to make this connection with a few extra parts.

As part of our continuous improvement, design changes have been made to the hardware of the CFA633 series of advanced display modules for improved manufacturability, improved quality, and a lower current profile.
Starting August 1, 2015 the "Drive Bay Kit Configurator" located at https://www.crystalfontz.com/products/select_kit.html will no longer be functional for ordering one of our Serial or USB displays (CFA533, CFA631, CFA632, CFA633, CFA634, CFA635, and CFA735) in a bracket or SLED. This functionality is being moved to the Customize and Add to Cart process when checking out. This will allow for further customization by our customers to better fit their needs.
The new part numbers will have the bracket / SLED and overlay type as a PREFIX to the configured part number. The choice for bracket / SLED to a display order will be via the cart options. Our CFA835 displays were introduced with these configuration options.
As part of our continuous improvement process, we are integrating the ordering of displays in drive bay and SLED kits as part of the display ordering process.
As announced in a PCN 10286 https://www.crystalfontz.com/news/pcn.php?id=10286 on 2010/10/06, the new CFA633 hardware v2.0 / Firmware version 2.0 ("s2.0" for serial modules and "u2.0" for USB modules) is fit, form, and function compatible with previous versions of the CFA633 series (hardware versions 1.5x).
In command 12 (0x0C): Set LCD Cursor Style, cursor style choice "3" changed from "3 = blinking block plus underscore" to "3 = blinking underscore cursor." The rate at which the cursor blinks is faster than in previous CFA633 versions (HW v1.x).
The attached PDF file describes differences between our CFA633 v1.5x and CFA633 v2.0 intelligent display module series. We also list the CFA533 series as a comparison for customers who do not require the fan control available in the CFA633 series. Hardware version numbers are silk screened on the back of the PCBs.
The LCD2S-162 is a RoHS compliant Serial LCD Daughter board that can be connected to a standard 16x2 Character Display Module that supports 4 bit mode. It enables the LCD display to be controlled via an I2C or SPI serial bus. The contrast and backlight are software controlled, and can be set to 254 levels.
The LCD2S-162 includes a 4x4 (16 button) matrix keypad encoder with software debouncing. A keypad with up to 16 buttons (4 rows by 4 columns) can be added to the display via a standard 10 pin, 2.54mm header. Our 12 button or 16 button keypads can be used, and can be connected to the LCD2S-162 via the CAB16RIB150 ribbon cable. When using the I2C serial bus, an interrupt line will be activated when a key is pressed, informing the user that there is key data to be read. Alternatively the LCD2S-162 can be polled to see if it has any pending keypad data.
The LCD2S-162 also has 5 user configurable, general purpose inputs/outputs. Two of them can deliver up to 1000mA each, and have protection circuitry for driving relays.
The LCD used must supports 4 bit mode. All 16x2 Character Modules sold on our site support 4 bit mode, and nearly all commercially available LCD Character Modules support it too. The LCD2S-162 has a high speed SPI/I2C serial bus. For convenience the I2C and SPI signals are available via a Micro Match type connector, and a standard 2.54mm, 2x6 row pin header. Most new Modtronix SBC boards have Micro Match connectors, and can be connected to the LCD2S-162 using these 150mm or 300mm cables. Or, the conn-micmat6-MW Micro Match connector can be used to create a custom cable.
The LCD2S has 2 general purpose open collector outputs, OUT1 and OUT2. These outputs can supply up to 1000mA, and have protection circuitry for driving relays. Both OUT1 and OUT2 are enabled by default. They are available via the X3 connector (2x6 pin header).
A matrix keypad supporting up to 16 buttons (4x4 matrix) can be connected to the LCD2S-162. The keypad is connected to the pins marked R1 to R4 (rows) and C1 to C4 (columns) on the X1 1x10 pin header. The LCD2S has built in button debouncing, which can be configured for different values. The default should work fine though.
The picture on the right shows and example of connecting a 12 button keypad, relay and buzzer to the LCD2S. The buzzer can be configured to sound each time a button is pressed, or controlled via the OUT command.
What is included1 x Serial LCD daughter board. The 16 pin connector that fits onto the LCD display is also assembled. To use this board with a 16x2 Character Display Module it just has to be soldered to the back of it.

Brand new are our graphic capability OLED displays with USB connection and integrated touchpanel. They are good for wholesome control unit or as a display only.
In addition to some serial interfaces like RS-232, SPI and I²C there are some digital and analoge in- and outputs also. With the use of those some simple control actions with fixed display content can be realized. Currently there are 2 sizes available with 2.9" and 82x67x21mm same as 1.7" with 55x54x21mm.
Our serial devices are a dot-matrix LCD series of products that are ready for operation with a driver and a bezel or a snap-in housing. They are connected to a standard RS-232C interface (or, optionally, an RS-422). The data transmission rate can be set to 300, 1,200, 2,400 or 9,600 bps. All cursor control (line feed etc.) is automatic. The displays are equipped with LED lighting that can be switched off by software means.
LCD graphics units are intelligent graphics displays with a serial RS-232 interface. Two or three integrated character sets and a wide range of graphics functions permit the time- and cost-saving use of the latest LCD graphics displays. Apart from a supply voltage of +5V and RS-232 data, no further signals are required. No additional software or special drivers are required for their operation. All the graphics routines are integrated in the display"s in-built high-level graphics controller. This permits the creation of a clear and attractive display using only a few commands. All functions are positioned with pixel accuracy by means of x/y coordinates (e.g. draw straight line: G x1 y1 x2 y2).
DISPLAY VISIONS offers 3 LCD graphics displays in different sizes in a snap-in housing: EA KIT120, KIT128 and KIT160. 3 further sizes are available with an anodized mounting panel in black or blue: EA KIT240-6, KIT240-7 and KIT320-8. They are controlled via either an RS-232 or an RS-422 interface.
A range of integrated fonts and graphics commands make it easy to program these displays: All functions are programmed with pixel accuracy by means of x/y coordinates (e.g. draw straight line: ESC G x1 y1 x2 y2).
