I have a 1.44" TFT Graphic LCD screen like this one: 1.44" TFT Graphic LCD (128x128px) - Creatron Inc I need this small screen to fit in a project I am working on. I also have a micro SD card breakout board like this :https://www.creatroninc.com/product/microsd-breakout/
I have been able to get the screen working to run a graphics test but my ultimate goal is to, from the push of a button on my Arduino Uno, display one image on the screen, in landscape format.
I am fairly new to Arduino but I have built quite a few projects. I have never used a screen before though and have been thoroughly confused by the libraries needed to load images onto the screen. It seems straight forward, there are tutorials available but they seem to be out of date with the libraries that have changed and I have yet to be able to succeed with anything other than basic graphics.
I just want one image to appear. I didn"t imagine it would be so difficult. I am willing to keep trying but I could use a little help to make sure that I am wiring the SD card breakout correctly and with finding basic code that can work to display an image. Below is the first part of the code in an example I have been using to try to figure out the connections:

And last, but not least - modules were quite nice packed, UNO and display in separate packs, with air bubbles. I got two and both of them show the same thing. USB connector is isolated (not shorting power coming to regulator on LCD board). Backlight is on... I don"t know...

By these two functions, You can find out the resolution of the display. Just add them to the code and put the outputs in a uint16_t variable. Then read it from the Serial port by Serial.println();. First add Serial.begin(9600); in setup().

As I can read your link, the shield is using D2-D8 and A0-A3, leaving some pins unused. So some Arduino pins are still free to use, just the shield is in the way to get connected there.

It is possible to connect more arduinos, there are so much different ways, that it is hard to write here all - choose one, that would suit you best. (anyway you would need some access to some pins anyway )

ok, glad I asked. Most SPI devices need to have a CS (Chip Select) or CSN (Chip Select Not -- same behavior, different label) so that the MCU (the nano) can tell which SPI device to pay attention to the communication happening on the SPI bus (MISO, MOSI, & SCK/SCLK pins). Without attaching the ST7789"s CS pin to the MCU, the display is likely paying attention to all communication over the SPI bus, even when the data over MOSI is only intended for the nRF24.
According to the code you posted, and the adafruit library for the ST7789, you are trying to use software driven SPI data over the nano"s designated pins for hardware driven SPI. I highly recommend you change the TFT_MOSI & TFT_SCLK pins to something that isn"t also attached the nRF24. Or just use the ST7789"s CS pin. Notice that the ST7789 is one of those few SPI devices that doesn"t use the MISO (because its an output only device).
p.s. SCL & SDA are terms usually reserved for the I2C bus, but they are often used as a reference for the SPI pins SCK & MOSI/MISO (as evident by the ST7789 datasheet which doesn"t explicitly mention using I2C). I"ve also seen SDO & DO used for MOSI and SDI & DI used for MISO. The SCK/SCLK pin shares the same identical role as the SCL (again just different labels for a different interfacing bus).

Size of displays affects your project parameters. Bigger Display is not always better. if you want to display high-resolution images and signs, you should choose a big size display with higher resolution. But it decreases the speed of your processing, needs more space and also needs more current to run.
After choosing the right display, It’s time to choose the right controller. A Microcontroller uses many different protocols to communicate with various sensors and modules. There are many different types of communication protocols for wireless and wired communication, and the most commonly used communication technique is Serial Communication. Serial communication is the process of sending data one bit at a time, sequentially, over a communication channel or bus. There are many types of serial communication like UART, CAN, USB, I2C, and SPI communication.
In this tutorial, we learn about the SPI protocol and how to use it in Arduino. We will use SPI Protocol for communication between two Arduinos. Here one Arduino will act as Master and another one will act as Slave, two LEDs and push buttons will be connected to both the Arduino. To demonstrate SPI communication, we will control the master side LED by the push button at the slave side and vice versa using the SPI Serial communication protocol.
Important Note: A new resolution is underway to improve the terminologies used in SPI communication by removing office words like "Master" and "Slave" while discussing SPI communication. According to this new resolution, people are encouraged to use the word "Controller" in place of "Master" and "Peripheral" in place of "Slave". It is expected that the terms MOSI/MISO and SS will be changed to SDI(Serial Data In) /SDO(Serial Data Out)and CS(Chip Select) respectively. For the sake of avoiding confusion, we have still used the old terminologies in the article, but we encourage our readers to practise the new terms.
SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) is a serial communication protocol. SPI interface was found by Motorola in 1970. SPI has a full-duplex connection, which means that the data is sent and received simultaneously. That is a master can send data to a slave and a slave can send data to the master simultaneously. SPI is synchronous serial communication means the clock is required for communication purposes.
A SPI has a master/Slave communication by using four lines. A SPI can have only one master and can have multiple slaves. A master is usually a microcontroller and the slaves can be a microcontroller, sensors, ADC, DAC, LCD etc.
To start communication between master and slave we need to set the required device"s Slave Select (SS) pin to LOW, so that it can communicate with the master. When it"s high, it ignores the master. This allows you to have multiple SPI devices sharing the same MISO, MOSI, and CLK lines of master. As you can see in the above image there are four slaves in which the SCLK, MISO, MOSI are common connected to master and the SS of each slave is connected separately to individual SS pins (SS1, SS2, SS3) of master. By setting the required SS pin LOW a master can communicate with that slave.
So now let’s start with practical demonstration of SPI protocol in Arduino. In this tutorial we will use two arduino one as master and other as slave. Both Arduino are attached with a LED & a push button separately. Master LED can be controlled by using slave Arduino’s push button and slave Arduino’s LED can be controlled by master Arduino’s push button using SPI communication protocol present in arduino.
The below circuit diagram shows how to use SPI on Arduino UNO, but you can follow the same procedure for Arduino Mega SPI Communication or Arduino nano SPI communication. Almost everything will remain the same except for the pin number. You have to check the pinout of Arduino nano or mega to find the Arduino nano SPI pins and Arduino Mega pins, once you have done that everything else will be the same.

The purpose of this guide is to get your 0.96″ color LCD display successfully operating with your Arduino, so you can move forward and experiment and explore further types of operation with the display. This includes installing the Arduino library, making a succesful board connection and running a demonstration sketch.
Although you can use the display with an Arduino Uno or other boad with an ATmega328-series microcontroller – this isn’t recommended for especially large projects. The library eats up a fair amount of flash memory – around 60% in most cases.
So if you’re running larger projects we recommend using an Arduino Mega or Due-compatible board due to the increased amount of flash memory in their host microcontrollers.
(As the display uses the ST7735S controller IC, you may be tempted to use the default TFT library included with the Arduino IDE – however it isn’t that reliable. Instead, please follow the instructions below).

The display uses the SPI data bus for communication, and is a 3.3V board. You can use it with an Arduino or other 5V board as the logic is tolerant of higher voltages.

This is a graphics library for the family of small colour TFT displays based on the ST7735 and ST7789 driver chips. These are really nice displays; bright, colourful, available in a variety of useful sizes, and available at low cost from suppliers like Adafruit, AliExpress, or Banggood:
This library allows you to plot points, draw lines, draw filled rectangles, and plot text with an optional scale factor. I"ve included a demo histogram-plotting program that adjusts itself to fit each of the displays I"ve supported.
Unlike most other TFT display libraries this one doesn"t require a memory buffer, allowing it to be run on any processor down to an ATtiny85. The displays are SPI and require four pins to drive the display, leaving one pin free on an ATtiny85 to interface to another device, such as a temperature sensor. If you need more pins choose a larger chip, such as the ATtiny84; see Using the library with other AVR chips at the end of the article for information about how to convert the code for different chips.
I"ve published a library for a colour OLED display in a previous article: Colour Graphics Library. The main difference between the colour TFT displays and the colour OLED displays is that the TFT displays are not self-illuminating, and so need a backlight; they therefore have a slightly higher power consumption. However, they are exceedingly cheap, and they are available in larger sizes than the colour OLED displays.
This library will work with displays based on the ST7735 which supports a maximum display size of 132 (H) x 162 (V), or the similar ST7789 which supports a maximum display size of 240 (H) x 320 (V).
The display driver interfaces to the displays with the longer side as the vertical dimension, which is why the rectangular displays are usually listed with the longer dimension second. My library allows you to rotate the image for any desired orientation.
All the Adafruit breakout boards for these displays include level-shifting circuitry, so they will work with either 5V or 3.3V microcontroller boards. They also include an SD card socket, if that"s of interest to you. The Adafruit boards have pullups on the backlight and reset pins, so the display will work if you leave these pins unconnected.
The pullup resistor from the display"s CS pin is optional; it holds the chip select high to prevent the display from being affected by the ISP signals while programming the ATtiny85.
The different displays are catered for by six constants which specify the size of the display, the offsets relative to the area supported by the display driver, whether the display is inverted, and the rotation value; for example:

The ATtiny85 and other AVR processors supports toggling of one or more bits in a port, so provided you set all the pins to their disabled state at startup, for speed the display access routines can simply toggle the appropriate pins to enable or disable them.
The InitDisplay() routine first defines the four display pins as outputs, and takes the SCK, DC, and CS pins high (inactive). It then sends the essential configuration commands to the display.
The display memory stores 18 bits per pixel: 6 bits per colour. However, you can write to the display in three alternative modes, with 12, 16, or 18 bits per pixel. I chose the 16 bit mode, which assigns 5 bits to red, 6 bits to green, and 5 bits blue. It"s the most convenient one to work with as you simply send two bytes to define the colour of each pixel.
To clear the display the ClearDisplay() routine sends the appropriate number of zero bytes. The routine temporarily switches to 12-bit colour mode, which reduces the time to clear the display by 25%:

My first version of PlotChar() plotted characters by calling PlotPoint() for each pixel. However, I then tried the following alternative approach which defines an area of the display using the CASET (Column Address Set) and RASET (Row Address Set) commands, and then sends a stream of the appropriate bytes to define the character. This turned out to be over three times faster!
14th January 2020: Tested the program with the Adafruit 1.3" 240x240 TFT display, and updated the program to correct a problem when rotating the image on that display.

In case anyone is interested, I want to use some of these ILI9341/0 displays on both Teensy based stuff as well as Arduino (actually an Atmega644 based board) based system, and I still want the ability to read pixels. In particular where I am wanting this is for Debug text output where I can scroll the text...
I adapted the read pixel test program mentioned earlier in this thread (could not use printf on stream, change library name...) and so far it appears to work on a Teensy 3.1 with PJRC ILI9341 display as well as on an Arbotix-M board (Atmega 644p) using Adafruit 2.2" TFT display (ILI9340). So should work fine on Atmega328p based systems as well. I have not tested it on an Arduino Due yet. I have one buried around here somewhere
I should do another pass through the code to cleanup some stuff, I added some commands like: writecommand_cont, writedata_cont that leave the CS line selected, which is needed in these cases. Like the _t3 library I also had to spilit up setAddrWindow and setAddr. Currently I just have the setAddrWindow calling off to setAddr, where in the T3, I believe that setAddr in inline. Always an interesting question of trade off for speed versus size... Also wondering about taking pass through such that most of the commands have the CS pin selected through the command, as compared to current version where in most cases CS line is selected/deselected on each byte (or two bytes in cases of things like X or Y position).

TFT LCDs are the most popular color displays – the displays in smartphones, tablets, and laptops are actually the TFT LCDs only. There are TFT LCD shields available for Arduino in a variety of sizes like 1.44″, 1.8″, 2.0″, 2.4″, and 2.8″. Arduino is quite a humble machine whenever it comes to process or control graphics. After all, it is a microcontroller platform, and graphical applications usually require much greater processing resources. Still, Arduino is capable enough to control small display units. TFT LCDs are colorful display screens that can host beautiful user interfaces.
Most of the smaller TFT LCD shields can be controlled using the Adafruit TFT LCD library. There is also a larger TFT LCD shield of 3.5 inches, with an ILI9486 8-bit driver.
The Adafruit library does not support the ILI9486 driver. Actually, the Adafruit library is written to control only TFT displays smaller than 3.5 inches. To control the 3.5 inch TFT LCD touch screen, we need another library. This is MCUFRIEND_kbv. The MCUFRIEND_kbv library is, in fact, even easier to use in comparison to the Adafruit TFT LCD library. This library only requires instantiating a TFT object and even does not require specifying pin connections.
TFT LCDs for ArduinoUser interfaces are an essential part of any embedded application. The user interface enables any interaction with the end-user and makes possible the ultimate use of the device. The user interfaces are hosted using a number of devices like seven-segments, character LCDs, graphical LCDs, and full-color TFT LCDs. Out of all these devices, only full-color TFT displays are capable of hosting sophisticated interfaces. A sophisticated user interface may have many data fields to display or may need to host menus and sub-menus or host interactive graphics. A TFT LCD is an active matrix LCD capable of hosting high-quality images.
Arduino operates at low frequency. That is why it is not possible to render high-definition images or videos with Arduino. However, Arduino can control a small TFT display screen rendering graphically enriched data and commands. By interfacing a TFT LCD touch screen with Arduino, it is possible to render interactive graphics, menus, charts, graphs, and user panels.
Some of the popular full-color TFT LCDs available for Arduino include 3.5″ 480×320 display, 2.8″ 400×200 display, 2.4″ 320×240 display and 1.8″ 220×176 display. A TFT screen of appropriate size and resolution can be selected as per a given application.
If the user interface has only graphical data and commands, Atmega328 Arduino boards can control the display. If the user interface is a large program hosting several menus and/or submenus, Arduino Mega2560 should be preferred to control the TFT display. If the user interface needs to host high-resolution images and motions, ARM core Arduino boards like the DUE should be used to control the TFT display.
MCUFRIEND_kbv libraryAdafruit TFT LCD library supports only small TFT displays. For large TFT display shields like 3.5-inch, 3.6-inch, 3.95-inch, including 2.4-inch and 2.8-inch TFT LCDs, MCUFRIEND_kbv library is useful. This library has been designed to control 28-pin TFT LCD shields for Arduino UNO. It also works with Arduino Mega2560. Apart from UNO and Mega2560, the library also supports LEONARDO, DUE, ZERO, and M0-PRO. It also runs on NUCLEO-F103 and TEENSY3.2 with Sparkfun Adapter. The Mcufriend-style shields tend to have a resistive TouchScreen on A1, 7, A2, 6 but are not always in the same direction rotation. The MCUFRIEND_kbv library can be included in an Arduino sketch from the library manager.
The 3.5-inch TFT LCD shield needs to be plugged atop the Arduino board. The Mcufriend-style shields are designed to fit into all the above-mentioned Arduino boards. The shields have a TFT touch screen that can display colorful images and interfaces and a micro SD card reader to save images and other data. How project worksThe code fills a rectangle, then draws a rectangle within which text “EEWORLDONLINE” is displayed. Then, lines, circles, rectangles, and squares are drawn on the screen. The project ends with a greeting and a message.
