For those that would like to do backlight control, you can use my hd44780 LCD library package (available in the IDE library manager) that supports backlight control and will auto detect this issue and work around the issue in s/w for shields that have the issue.

This 16x2 LCD Keypad shield is developed for Arduino compatible boards and also can be used with Raspberry Pi. The shield includes a 16x2 HD44780 LCD module and a 5 push button keypad for menu selection and user interface programming.

If you don"t want/need backlight control and are ok with having the backlight on all the time, cutting the D10 header pin from the lcd/keypad shield might be the easiest solution.

This Arduino Shield makes it easy to use an RGB 16x2 Character LCD. While using only 2 wires you can control the 16x2 character LCD, 3 backlight pins and 5 keypad pins! The best part is you don"t really lose those two pins either, since you can stick i2c-based sensors, RTCs, etc and have them share the I2C bus. This is a super slick way to add a display without all the wiring hassle.

The shield is designed for "classic" Arduinos such as the Uno, Duemilanove, Diecimilla, etc. It uses the I2C pins at Analog 4 and Analog 5. It will also work perfectly with Arduino Mega R3"s which have the extra SDA/SCL I2C pins broken out. Earlier Mega"s have the I2C pins in a different location and will require you to solder two wires from the I2C pins on the shield and plug them into the different I2C locations at Digital 20 & 21. This shield will not fit easily on top of an Arduino Ethernet because of the Ethernet jack height.

This product comes as a kit! Included is a high quality PCB and all the components (buttons, header etc). A 16x2 Character RGB positive LCD is included! Assembly is easy, even if you"ve never soldered before and the kit can be completed in 30 minutes.

At this time, the code and shield can control the RGB backlight of our character LCDs by turning each LED on or off. This means you can display the following colors: Red, Yellow, Green, Teal, Blue, Violet, White and all off. There is no support for PWM control of the backlight at this time, so if you need to have more granular control of the RGB backlight to display a larger range of colors, this plate can"t do that (the I2C expander does not have PWM output).

The two pins on the LCD which are marked "LED" are directly connected to the backlight LED. If you drive an LED over its forward voltage the current is rising exponential in relation to the voltage. Thus every LED needs a current limiting circuit, like a simple resistor in series. Otherwise the current through the LED will be so high, that it gets fried.

So to solve the problem you should place a resistor in series with the backlight LED (so for example between Vcc and the positive LED pin). The needed resistor value depends on the LED. The error message states 20mA max (just like a digital output pin on an Arduino), thus a value above R = U/I = 5V/20mA = 250 Ohm will be enough to hold the current below the maximum. To have a safety margin I would start with like 300 Ohm (depending on whats available).

Previous examples connect the white LED backlight to power. The following example is specifically for those using an LCD with a RGB LED backlight. The only difference between the connection is the LED"s backlight on pins 15-18.

Maybe a bit late, but I’d like to note that it is certainly possible to dim the backlight on LCDs that come with an I2C adaptor. It’s as simple as wiring the upper pin (the one labeled LED) of the I2C board to a PWM pin in the Arduino. Using analogWrite() will vary the LED brightness from 0 (LED off) to 255.

UsuallyArduino LCD Displayprojects (especially with Arduino Uno) cause the use of pin outs. It is also complicated by wire soldering and connection. The 16x2 LCD Display using this I2C serial protocol works with Arduino"s 2 pin connection (not counting the 2 power connections required for the screen) That means it only needs 4 inputs for this LCD display: VCC, GND, SDA, SCL. It saves at least 4 digital / analog pins in Arduino.

To save you from the hassle of figuring out how to use those with an Arduino or an ESP, and likely for me later when I will need that again, I decided to write down all I discovered about them.

I did put it on the Pin 13 of my Arduino Mega, that way it makes weird sounds whenever the program uploads or when the arduino boots because that’s the pin of the L Led.
