Note that the price collected for a smartphone is the entire cost of the phone, with any promotions or sales taken into account. Although consumers may purchase a cell phone at the same time they sign up for wireless service, only changes to the purchase price of the hardware are captured in this category. Wireless services are captured in the wireless telephone services category. If a smartphone is purchased at a wireless carrier, and the cost of the phone can be paid in monthly increments as part of the consumer"s monthly service bill, the CPI still collects the price for the phone as if the consumer had bought it outright. Collecting the full transaction price of the phone each month assures uniformity of prices within the sample.

If a replacement smartphone is different from its predecessor and the value of the difference in quality can be accurately estimated, a quality adjustment can be made to the previous item’s price to include the estimated value of the difference in quality. For example, CPI analysts have estimated the value of smartphone features such as screen resolution. So if a manufacturer provides a higher resolution screen to the latest model in their smartphone line, the CPI adds the value of additional resolution to the price of the predecessor item. Similarly, should the screen decrease in resolution, the value of the higher resolution would be subtracted from the predecessor’s price.

The estimated values for the quality adjustments for smartphones were generated using hedonic modeling methods. The data used to construct the model were obtained from a secondary source that specializes in capturing smartphone prices from a wide variety of retailers who sell these devices. In addition to providing all of the detailed specifications needed to create a useable model, the secondary source data also provided the full (non-contract) price of each phone which is the price collected in the CPI. Using this auxiliary dataset provided us with five times the amount of observations available from CPI collected data, allowing for a robust model to be created.

Typically an item in the CPI is priced until it is no longer available, but in the case of directed substitution, we will continue to price the current phone or substitute to the latest model, even if the current model is still available. With April 2018 data, directed substitution is employed for smartphones in order to bring the CPI sample of smartphones more in line with what consumers are purchasing. Directed substitution is based on statistics on how often consumers upgrade their smartphones and will take place approximately twice a year to coincide with new hardware releases from manufacturers. If a smartphone in the sample is two years old or older, random sampling will be used to determine if the current phone should continue to be priced or if a substitution to the latest model should be made.

Dual-screen phones or phones with two displays have been around for many years, but in 2021, we have seen the concept elevate to a whole new level. Manufacturers are trying to reinvent the productivity and creativity aspects of the smartphone experience, and it all keeps leading back to more screen real-estate and multiple displays.

Oppo joined the bandwagon of foldable smartphones with the launch of the Oppo Find N 5G. Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, this one also has an outer display and the main display. The device works on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

Though the outer display’s refresh rate is a bit disappointing as Oppo could have done better in terms of that too. Surface Duo 2 is a second-generation dual-display phone from Microsoft that comes with some much-needed improvements – and presents a solid case for dual-display phones.

That’s because Microsoft has put in the effort to optimize all of its own office (and other) apps and social media apps like Instagram to take advantage of the extra display. There are two 5.8-inch PixelSense displays that form into an 8.3-inch display when unfolded. When the phone is folded, the glance bar on the spine gives you a glimpse of phone notifications. With the glance bar, you can also check the battery level while charging without unfolding the phone.

These are still early days for foldable and dual display phones. Manufacturers have made big investments in foldable technology which makes us believe that it is here to stay. On the other hand, the concept of dual-display phones might very well fall flat just as modular phones did. We will need to wait and watch for a couple more years to know if consumers really take to the form factor and if manufacturers are persistent enough to see this one through.

PPI stands for Pixels Per Inch and is a measure of or how tightly packed the pixels in a mobile cell phone are. PPI is actually the Pixel Density of the display screen of the mobile cell phone. The PPI of mobile cell phone screens is got by dividing the number of pixels along either the vertical or horizontal axis by the length in inches of that side.

We can calculate the length of any side of a phone screen from the diagonal size of the phone screen and the pixel ratio between X and Y axis. Thus we can calculate the sides of a 4 inch phone display screen to be 2.63 and 3.945 inches. The PPI thus works out to 273 (720/2.63 or 1080/3.945).

Right now the Sony Xperia XZ is the highest PPi pixel density mobile phone with a PPI of 806. The Sony Xperia XZ is the only Ultra HD 4K screen cell phone available now. The Apple iPhone 7 with Retina 5.5-inch HD display of 1920×1080-pixels has only 401 PPi. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8″ Quad HD+ Super AMOLED screen with a 2960×1440 pixel resolution and 570 PPi.

That might seem counterintuitive. Most phones are expensive, and prices for the best ones aren"t going down. Apple released new iPhones in September at the same U.S. prices as last year"s options, for example. And Samsung"s high-end devices cost as much as $1,800 this year. Average selling prices for smartphones continue to climb in markets around the world.

It turns out, smartphones aren"t getting cheaper. They"re getting better. And that"s why the CPI shows them deflating instead of inflating like a lot of other goods.

Here"s why: Normally, the CPI contains price comparisons for identical items, whose prices don"t change much from year to year. So, it might compare eggs with eggs, for example. But in the case of smartphones, the statistics bureau has to control for devices that get better each year. If smartphones are improving and the price is staying the same, then the bureau records a price decline.

"There"s been a lot of declines in the [smartphone] index. And that"s really just in large part dealing with the quality improvements," said Jonathan Church, an economist at the bureau.

Twice a year, the bureau looks at the new smartphone models and measures how they"ve improved — whether they have better cameras, displays or other new features.

"For smartphones, we"re talking about things like screen size, RAM, processor speed, phone camera or rear camera, whether it"s foldable, or things like that," Church said.

Estimating the size of the quality adjustments is done with a hedonic modeling method, and the bureau uses data from a third-party dataset that includes smartphone specs.

Or, as the bureau puts it: "If a replacement smartphone is different from its predecessor and the value of the difference in quality can be accurately estimated, a quality adjustment can be made to the previous item"s price to include the estimated value of the difference in quality."

The bureau has indexed smartphone technologies to a starting point in late 2019, when Apple"s newest device was the iPhone 11 and Samsung"s best was the Galaxy S10. In fact, smartphone prices have been deflating since 2019, according to the CPI.

Eventually, Church said, smartphones may mature into the kind of product that would see price increases and inflation. But the rate of improvement would have to slow down.

"It"s really only at a certain mature point in the cycle that their price will start to go up again," Church said. "It seems pretty early in the lifecycle still, smartphones in general."

Android users don"t have much choice when it comes to small phones, but Samsung is changing that with the Galaxy S22. The standard Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch screen, whereas many competing Android phones have displays that measure around 6.4 inches or larger.

Usually priced at $1,800 (yikes!), the Galaxy Z Fold 4 still costs substantially more than your average smartphone. But the latest version of Samsung"s book-style foldable is filled with small improvements that add up to a much more pleasant overall experience. The hinge is thinner, the device is slightly lighter and the cover screen is a bit wider, making it feel more natural to use as a phone when closed. That"s on top of other routine smartphone upgrades like a better camera that"s similar to the Galaxy S22"s and a new processor. Our reviewer Patrick Holland called it his "favorite Android tablet."

With the Z Flip 3, you"re still getting a 6.7-inch display that folds in half and can easily slide into a jeans or jacket pocket. The cover screen is also the same size on both phones, and the Z Flip 3 and 4 each have similar cameras and 5G connectivity. At around $1,000, it"s now the most affordable foldable phone Samsung sells. Unless you can find the Z Flip 4 at a discount that makes it the same price as the Z Flip 3, we recommend going for last year"s phone.

The A42 5G Android phone sits just below the A52, provides less RAM, loses the macro camera and has a lower-resolution front-facing camera. It still has 5G connectivity though, along with a bigger battery and a marginally bigger display, which could make it a great affordable Samsung phone option for those of you who watch a lot of videos on the move.

If 5G speeds are your top Android phone priority but you don"t want to spend much money, Samsung"s Galaxy A32 5G is where you should be looking. Its low price makes it one of the cheapest 5G-enabled Samsung Galaxy phones that"s possible to buy right now, and you still get a big 6.5-inch display and a multiple rear camera setup. It"s not challenging the overall performance of the S21 line, but it"s a solid all-rounder device for the money.

The Galaxy A12 is one of the cheapest phones Samsung sells and it"s the one to consider for those of you who simply want a phone for all of life"s essentials. If you don"t care for extravagant cameras or supercomputer-levels of processing power, you won"t have to pay for them with this model.
