Attention to all California residents, Proposition 65 or officially known as, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a law that requires warnings be provided to California consumers when they might be exposed to chemicals identified by California as causing cancer or reproductive toxicity. The warnings are intended to help California consumers make informed decisions about their exposures to these chemicals from the products they use. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) administers the Proposition 65 program and publishes the listed chemicals, which includes more than 850 chemicals. August 2016, OEHHA adopted new regulations, to go into effect on August 30, 2018, which changes the information that is required in or on Proposition 65 warnings.

The H6 Handy from Zoom is a portable handheld recorder and USB audio interface that features an interchangeable microphone system. The recorder ships with both XY and mid-side microphone modules, foam windscreen, 2GB SD card, four AA batteries, USB cable, Cubase LE and a hard carrying case. Optional module attachments can be purchased for expanded functionality. The H6 Handy allows for versatile recording techniques, giving you several options right out of the box. The included XYH-6 XY microphone module is made up of two matched unidirectional condenser microphones and is intended for capturing accurate, phase-correct stereo audio. The module allows you to adjust the angle of the two mics to either 90 degrees, or for a wider stereo image, 120 degrees. For situations that call for audio that allows for width control over your stereo image after it has been recorded, the XY module can be switched out for the MSH-6 mid-side stereo microphone module. Contrary to the appearance of the capsule, the mid-side module actually contains two elements positioned on top of one another: a unidirectional mic which faces forward (mid), and a bi-directional mic set perpendicular to it (side).
In addition to providing you the ability to adjust the width of your stereo audio after it has been recorded, MS recording also provides true mono compatibility, a factor that comes into play in situations such as television production. In addition, the H6 is equipped with four XLR/TRS combo inputs for connecting external mic/line sources such as microphones or mixers. All four inputs and each of the mic modules are equipped with their own preamps with dedicated gain knobs that are easily accessible whether you have the unit mounted to your camera, or strapped over your shoulder. Also, each of the four combo inputs has its own -20dB pad. The recorder allows you to record up to six channels at once and stores them to SDXC memory cards up to 128GB in size. It also features a backup-record option that tracks a duplicate of the left and right channels with -12db input gain.

In terms of battery performance, both the H4N Pro and the H6 run on AA batteries, but in terms of battery performance the H6 has a significant advantage over the H4N Pro model, which seems to drain the batteries much quicker.
Meanwhile, Zoom suggests that the H4N Pro provides users with six hours of battery life, however when collating the community"s experiences, as well as reflecting on my own experience while using the H4N Pro, it seems that Zoom may have made an overestimation when quoting the six hours of battery life.
Alternatively, you could run either device off the mains. You can purchase accessory packs for each recorder, namely the Zoom APH-6 and the Zoom APH-4n Pro. Both will provide the means to plug the recorders in, and run them off constant power, so you don"t have to worry about battery life.
One of the most important aspects to consider when purchasing a handheld recorder is the audio quality. Both the H4N Pro and the H6 can produce fantastic results, under the right circumstances.
For example, the voice over for this video, as well as a few of my more recent videos, has been recorded on the Zoom H6, with the SGH-6 shotgun mic attachment.
The only device that I can really recommend for quiet sounds in the handheld category would be the Sony PCM-D100, which has been discontinued as far as I know, and which is currently selling on the used market for quite a bit. Alternatively, you can have a look at The Sony D50, which is the model before the D100.
Some say that it doesn"t sound quite as good as the D100, but look up some recordings online, and decide for yourself. Given that the D100 is so sought after, you might be able to get a more decent price on the D50.
A file format like .MP3 is specifically designed for portability, and ease of transfer, so some of the quality is stripped away intentionally, in order to obtain a smaller file size.
44.1 kHz is usually used for recording music. Whilst there"s nothing stopping you from recording your music at any sample rate, that"s usually what"s used most commonly.
48 kHz. This is typically used for recording dialogue, in film, or audio that will go over any kind of moving picture. For example, the audio for this video is recorded at 48kHz/24bit.
Finally, you have 96 kHz. This allows you far more flexibility in post production, so it"s not really necessary for most applications. 96kHz is only really necessary if you are intending to record sound effects, ambiences, or sounds which will be heavily manipulated.
The H6 is the ultimate portable recorder. With its advanced preamps and interchangeable capsules, the H6 delivers unmatched versatility and award-winning quality.
From the studio to remote locations, podcasts are produced everywhere. With inputs for every guest, the battery-powered H6 is a complete portable podcasting solution.
The H6 is your personal music studio 24/7. With up to six* discrete line-level / mic-level inputs, plus the ability to overdub and more, the H6 provides the road from a great idea to the perfect track. *Optional EXH-6 Mic Capsule Required
Featuring interchangeable mic capsules, four combo inputs and six tracks of quality recording, the H6 is ready to record on any set and in any scene the director throws at you.
You may have heard that everything gives you cancer – if you live in California. The reason is that it is a California state law that requires businesses to provide reasonable warning about the use of any chemicals the state has decided could cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The list of chemicals and substances is extensive - currently totaling approximately 900.
For those consumers who live outside of California, you are not accustomed to seeing Prop 65 Warnings everywhere you go to shop, eat, buy groceries, fix your car, and are even posted at amusement parks.
SKB has been making cases since 1977. We have no reported cases of our products causing harm or danger to anyone. We believe in the safety of our products and we meet all the applicable safety requirements. We are unable to test against the 900+ chemicals listed for Prop 65 and to 100% certainty, and therefore, in an abundance of caution, we have placed the warning on our products to be in compliance with this California regulation. You will also see the Prop 65 warning on products that you buy outside of California, because we are unable to determine our products’ final retail destination.
