Sony Computer Entertainment has released an LCD screen add-on for the PSOne, the slimmed-down version of its original PlayStation game console. The $129 high-definition screen plugs into the back of the console and allows players to take their game-playing on the road, without the need to hook up to a TV set.
Several third-party manufacturers have already released similar add-ons, all of which contribute to Sony"s plans of turning the PSOne into a portable game machine. A power adapter that plugs into a car"s cigarette lighter is set to come out early next year.
The LCD Screen (for PS one) is currently the only officially licensed monitor for the PS one that"s available on the retail market. There have been a few third-party manufactured PS one LCD screens that have seen their way onto retail store shelves thanks to companies such as Interact, Mad Catz and Electro Source, but until just recently we hadn"t seen one that came with the Sony seal of approval.
Does this really mean anything? Based on what we"ve seen of all the products, not really. The officially licensed moniker means a lot more when you"re dealing with things like memory cards and controllers because there"s a lot more reverse engineering going on because unlicensed third parties aren"t obliged to information about the console and how it works. But, in the case of an LCD screen for the PS one, it"s just a monitor that must work with the system"s output and be attachable to it. Not all that hard to do with or without Sony"s licensing.
At any rate, the Sony name generally stands for quality (let"s forget about the skipping PlayStations and the "Disk Read Errors" on the PS2 for a minute) and its official monitor, the LCD Screen (for PS one), is a top notch and well-built peripheral for the console.
When you pick up one of these units, you get yourself one of the LCD Screens, an AC Adaptor (the exact same kind that comes with the PS one unit), and an instruction manual. The screen is a 5" (diagonal width) Thin Film Transistor (TFT) liquid display and to the left and right of it you get 1 1/2 x 1 1/8 in 1.0 watt stereo speakers. Also on the front of the unit and below the screen you have button controls to adjust the brightness of the screen and the volume of the speakers.
The unit fits snuggly onto the PS one with the screws that are on its rear and looks completely stylish when mounted onto the console. It"s also extremely thin and lightweight, which really lends itself to being portable, which is what the screen and the PS one unit are intended to be.
The screen provides excellent video quality with very black blacks, very white whites and excellent color separation and overall picture quality. In fact, thanks to the reduced screen size and general clarity of the picture, most PlayStation games actually look better when being played on this PS one Screen than when played on a regular television set. It"s a lot harder to notice the low resolution of the textures and the general blockiness of polygonal models that are fairly common in most PlayStation games.
And despite the small size of the screen, you won"t experience any problems reading text in most text-heavy games like role-playing games. We were able to test Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX, Legend of Dragoon, and Vagrant Story and found that the text in each of those games were completely legible. With Vagrant Story, the font"s unique style made it a little less clear than the others, but still didn"t prove to be a problem. The only times that we noticed issues with reading text was during some end-game credits where the text size was much smaller than normal.
The speakers you get are probably about as good as you"re going to get with speakers of this size. Unless you have the volume turned all the way up, which will net you a crackling sound, the sound from the speakers is crystal clear. It doesn"t provide much in the way of bass, but that"s expected given the speakers. You do however get decent stereo sound and you will notice the separation between the two channels in games that support stereo sound.
Sadly, its AV IN jack is one that requires an SCPH-180 U AV connection cable that"s used to connect video equipment such as camcorders to the LCD screen and not standard stereo AV connections like you"ll find in some of the third party products. What this means is that you won"t be able to easily use this as a portable monitor for other consoles like the PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, and Xbox, which is something that is possible with some of the third party units.
Another complaint that we have is that it doesn"t come packed with a Car Adaptor, so you"ll have to buy Sony"s PS one Car Adaptor that will be sold separately when it"s eventually made available. It would"ve been nice to have this thrown in with the unit since it is something that you may find with other third-party monitors.
Even with the omissions, which include the lack of stereo AV input jacks and Car Adaptor this is a fine PS one peripheral that you really ought to consider picking up for your system if you"re looking to make it a little more portable. The monitor provides excellent picture quality and decent enough sound and looks stylish and extremely cute when attached to the PS one console. It"s currently priced at $129.99, so it"ll cost more than the unit itself, but it"s actually a decent price for a unit of this kind.

Sony began developing the PlayStation after a failed venture with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in the early 1990s. The console was primarily designed by Ken Kutaragi and Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan, while additional development was outsourced in the United Kingdom. An emphasis on 3D polygon graphics was placed at the forefront of the console"s design. PlayStation game production was designed to be streamlined and inclusive, enticing the support of many third-party developers.
The console proved popular for its extensive game library, popular franchises, low retail price, and aggressive youth marketing which advertised it as the preferable console for adolescents and adults. Premier PlayStation franchises included PlayStation 3.3,061 PlayStation games were released, with cumulative sales of 967 million units.
The PlayStation signalled Sony"s rise to power in the video game industry. The Play Station was to be announced at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.Hiroshi Yamauchi was wary of Sony"s increasing leverage at this point and deemed the original 1988 contract unacceptable upon realising it essentially handed Sony control over all games written on the SNES CD-ROM format. Although Nintendo was dominant in the video game market, Sony possessed a superior research and development department.Minoru Arakawa (his son-in-law) and chairman Howard Lincoln to Amsterdam to form a more favourable contract with Dutch conglomerate Philips, Sony"s rival. This contract would give Nintendo total control over their licences on all Philips-produced machines.
To determine the fate of the PlayStation project, Ohga chaired a meeting in June 1992, consisting of Kutaragi and several senior Sony board members. Kutaragi unveiled a proprietary CD-ROM-based system he had been secretly working on which played games with immersive 3D graphics. Kutaragi was confident that his LSI chip could accommodate one million logic gates, which exceeded the capabilities of Sony"s semiconductor division at the time.

Despite securing the support of various Japanese studios, Sony had no developers of their own by the time the PlayStation was in development. Sony was aware that using CDs for game distribution could have left games vulnerable to piracy, due to the growing popularity of CD-R and optical disc drives with burning capability. To preclude illegal copying, a proprietary process for PlayStation disc manufacturing was developed that, in conjunction with an augmented optical drive in Tiger H/E assembly, prevented burned copies of games from booting on an unmodified console. Specifically, all genuine PlayStation discs were printed with a small section of deliberate irregular data, which the PlayStation"s optical pick-up was capable of detecting and decoding. Consoles would not boot game discs without a specific wobble frequency contained in the data of the disc pregap sector (the same system was also used to encode discs" regional lock-outs).Red Book CD tolerances, so PlayStation discs" actual content could still be read by a conventional disc drive; however, the disc drive could not detect the wobble frequency (therefore duplicating the discs omitting it), since the laser pickup system of any optical disc drive would interpret this wobble as an oscillation of the disc surface and compensate for it in the reading process.
As the disc authenticity was only verified during booting, this copy protection system could be circumvented by swapping any genuine disc with the copied disc, while modchips could remove the protection system altogether.
Early PlayStations, particularly early 1000 models, experience skipping full-motion video or physical "ticking" noises from the unit. The problems stem from poorly placed vents leading to overheating in some environments, causing the plastic mouldings inside the console to warp slightly and create knock-on effects with the laser assembly. The solution is to sit the console on a surface which dissipates heat efficiently in a well vented area or raise the unit up slightly from its resting surface.
Due to an engineering oversight, the PlayStation does not produce a proper signal on several older models of televisions, causing the display to flicker or bounce around the screen. Sony decided not to change the console design, since only a small percentage of PlayStation owners used such televisions, and instead gave consumers the option of sending their PlayStation unit to a Sony service centre to have an official modchip installed, allowing play on older televisions.
The PlayStation featured a diverse game library which grew to appeal to all types of players. SCE was an upstart in the video game industry in late 1994, as the video game market in the early 1990s was dominated by Nintendo and Sega. Nintendo had been the clear leader in the industry since the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 and the Nintendo 64 was initially expected to maintain this position. The PlayStation"s target audience included the generation which was the first to grow up with mainstream video games, along with 18- to 29-year-olds who were not the primary focus of Nintendo.
The PlayStation became the first "computer entertainment platform" to ship over 100 million units worldwide,fifth best-selling console of all time as of 2023, with a total of 102.49 million units sold.
Sony"s next-generation PlayStation 2, which is backward compatible with the PlayStation"s DualShock controller and games, was announced in 1999 and launched in 2000. The PlayStation"s lead in installed base and developer support paved the way for the success of its successor,Microsoft"s newcomer Xbox and Nintendo"s GameCube.PS One Classics for purchase and download on the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita.
The success of the PlayStation contributed to the demise of cartridge-based home consoles. While not the first system to use an optical disc format, it was the first highly successful one, and ended up going head-to-head with the proprietary cartridge-relying Nintendo 64.copy protection, given its substantial reliance on licensing and exclusive games for its revenue.
Tokunaka remarked in 1996:Choosing CD-ROM is one of the most important decisions that we made. As I"m sure you understand, PlayStation could just as easily have worked with masked ROM [cartridges]. The 3D engine and everything—the whole PlayStation format—is independent of the media. But for various reasons (including the economies for the consumer, the ease of the manufacturing, inventory control for the trade, and also the software publishers) we deduced that CD-ROM would be the best media for PlayStation.
The increasing complexity of developing games pushed cartridges to their storage limits and gradually discouraged some third-party developers. Part of the CD format"s appeal to publishers was that they could be produced at a significantly lower cost and offered more production flexibility to meet demand.Square, whose Final Fantasy VII, and Enix (later merged with Square to form Square Enix), whose Konami, releasing only thirteen N64 games but over fifty on the PlayStation). Nintendo 64 game releases were less frequent than the PlayStation"s, with many being developed by either Nintendo itself or second-parties such as Rare.

The price and release date for Sony"s LCD screen for the PSOne have been released on Electronics Boutique"s Web site (ebworld.com). The attachable LCD screen will be released on November 15 for US$149.99. There has been no official announcement from Sony on the pricing and availability.

It took many years to acquire, but the PSOne with a screen attachment has been one of my top must-have consoles since it came out. Growing up as a kid, my parents didn’t have the $100 for the console and $130 for the screen add-on. The Combo Pack was released for $200 and seemed insane, but the PS2 was out and cost $300 at the time of release. $130 for a 5″ TFT LCD screen might seem like a lot, but this did more than just display games. It had an amazing brightness range, and clear stereo speakers that could be quite loud when turned up all the way. It also easily screwed onto the back of the unit and had a headphone jack, AV in, and even AV Out so you can just plug it up to your TV without taking the screen off. The power cable also plugs directly into the screen, so there was a lot of foresight on Sony’s part.
What makes the screen so awesome compared to any other console out there is that you can take it with you. Using a 7.5v car adapter, bringing it into your bedroom, or on the go, allows you to make playing the PS1 a more immersive and personal experience. The LCD screen makes the games look better than they do on current or older TVs. It’s like Sony found a perfect balance and knew how the PS1 would render and output, so they made the perfect screen for it. All the games display clear and sharp and the screen is quite vivid, so I can easily see the $130 price point during release.
As for the system itself, what can I say? It’s the PlayStation 1! While the system’s first iterations had many flaws such as overheating, cheap laser assemblies, and various other issues, the PSOne is sleek, slim, and just the basic unit which is all we need. Sony went for a rounded style with this system and it looks great. The only downside is that you can use most wireless controllers as the receivers are too large and can’t fit a memory card on top. The system is lightweight, even with the screen attached, and would easily fit into a backpack. The PS1 has an amazing library, probably some of the best out there. The PS1 wiped the floor with Nintendo 64 due to just a more diverse and massive library. The Nintendo 64 has some memorable games, but the overall experience just couldn’t top the PS1. With pre-rendered and live-action cutscenes, thanks to the CD format, it was a whole new experience. From the classic start-up jingle to the amazing feeling of the DualShock controller, and even down to the black underside of the discs, the PS1 was a behemoth and was unstoppable.
Would I recommend the current going price for a full PSOne Combo Pack at $100? Yes, go out and get it now. If you’re a PlayStation fan or just want to check out the classic library, this is the perfect unit to pick up. For some advice, make sure when you buy the unit you make sure the power and tray buttons work. These are large buttons and can easily be stuck or get grime down inside. Also, make sure the hinges on the screen aren’t loose. Many units have cracked hinges with screens that won’t stay up, and most importantly, make sure the LCD backlight isn’t dead. I bought a unit from a local store only to have the backlight die on me the second I turned it on when I got home. Of course, make sure both speakers are working and there isn’t any rattling or distortion. Make sure to ask the sellers these questions, or look for this if you find one in person.
The console is compatible with the entirety of the original PlayStation software library and contains many of the same features, although it lacks the "Reset" button seen on the original model.
A 5" LCD screen accessory was released two years after the console and was included in a "Combo Pack", though it was also available for purchase in stores separately until its eventual discontinuation in 2004. The accessory could be connected to the console"s AV MULTI OUT and DC IN 7.5V ports and was fastened in place with two screws. After connecting it, all video output would display on the screen while the audio would play through the screen"s speakers. The accessory was designed to allow for greater portability of the console since, at the time, Sony had not yet developed a handheld system. This can also be seen in the Combo Pack"s included cigarette lighter adapter which allowed the system to be plugged into a car outlet.
The PS one was bundled with its own unique white DualShock Controller in order to suit the console"s cleaner appearance better, similar to how the original model PlayStation was often bundled with controllers that were gray in color. Despite the distinct coloring, all PlayStation controllers are compatible with the console, as well as all original PlayStation Memory Cards.

Some items may be in stock at our supplier and require a transfer to our dispatch centre before being sent, these will all have a later estimated dispatch date shown in your basket and on your order confirmation. Please note that these dates are estimated, and whilst we always aim to meet and often exceed these dates, there will be the occasional item that is dispatched slightly later than the estimate.
If you have not received your item within the timeframe estimated on your dispatch confirmation, please contact us, and we will be happy to look into this for you. There can be delays caused by weather, holidays, and postal and customs backlogs. These are thankfully fairly uncommon, but please do not be alarmed if your item is a little late. On the incredibly rare occasion that an item is found to be lost, a replacement will be provided.
If you are unsatisfied with any of the items received (which we hope, due to our high standards, would never happen) please let us know within 7 days of receipt, as we can usually offer a replacement. Any items that require replacement must be posted to us within 14 days of a return being accepted, please ensure you obtain proof of posting / tracking..
In the unlikely event that any damage has occurred during delivery of your parcel, please ensure you take pictures of the inside and outside of the packaging, as these will be required to make a claim with the postal services.
If the original PlayStation was the video game console equivalent of the "60s-era Volkswagen Beetle--economic, reliable, loads of fun--the PS One could be considered the new Beetle--a hip restyling of those same qualities. Make no mistake: the PS One has all of the same functionality as the original PlayStation workhorse, will work with all of the same peripherals and accessories, and will play the existing PlayStation game library, as well as audio CDs (also note that, like the original PlayStation, it"s not compatible with the more advanced PlayStation 2). That"s not a lot of power, compared to a next-generation system like the Sega Dreamcast; but, when you factor in its very low price and the enormous library of games that are available (more than 1,000 that are spread across every genre imaginable), one can see easily why it"s as good a deal as ever. If rumors of exciting future accessories for the PS One (a four-inch LCD screen attachment, to name one) are true, this little machine could become a great option for the on-the-go gamer.
