Whether you’re in the retail or hospitality business, have products or services to promote or simply want to put out up-to-date and relevant information or tempreature check & facial recognition devices & LED screens are the perfect medium. Although more complex than static signs, they offer numerous advantages and are better in many ways than neon and fluorescent signs.

Flexible in use. You can easily incorporate graphics and text of varying colours and sizes. Messages can be changed when required, even scheduled for different days and times, so they provide up-to-date information to relevant people and to one or more screens.

Attention grabbing. Bright lights and coloured text or graphics will attract people’s attention and engage your audience far better than a conventional static sign. LED technology produces brilliant and clear light that is easily seen, even in bright sunlight, and can be read from variable distances. A LED display screen also has consistent brightness, unlike neon or fluorescent versions where individual lights can become dim or fail completely and so reduce the impact of the sign.

Neon and fluorescent lights contain gases that can leak and ultimately lead to failure. LED lights, by contrast, can often provide up to 10,000 hours of use, which equates to a life of five years or more. They work well even in harsh outdoor environments and don’t need protection from the weather. All in all, this leads to reduced maintenance, which can be particularly important if display screens are mounted in places that are difficult to access.

At LF Signs, we’ll make sure you gain the best possible advantage from your LED display. We’ll establish exactly what you want to achieve with a high quality signage, determine the information that needs to be imparted and design and manufacture your display accordingly.

By displaying dynamic messages that are specifically targeted at your audience, you’ll provide the information they need and improve your performance as a result. To do that, you need to get their attention, which LED screens are capable of doing. For proven results, especially when competition is fierce, LED displays will be far more effective than a static version every time and will quickly recoup your initial investment.

Digital directory boards are electronic displays that show directories, maps, or other information to help people navigate a building or campus. They are commonly used in hospitals, schools, office buildings, and other large facilities. Digital directory boards can be used in place of traditional paper directories, or as an additional display in addition to paper directories.

Digital directory boards can be created and managed using specialized software that allows the user to easily update and change the content, such as adding new locations or updating directions. They can also be programmed to display different information at different times of the day, such as office hours or emergency information. Digital directory boards may also include additional features, such as the ability to display images or interactive maps, or to provide real-time information, such as the location of available parking spaces.

Digital directory boards have several advantages over traditional paper directories, including cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and the ability to easily update and change the content. They can also be more engaging and visually appealing, which can help improve the user experience and reduce the burden on staff who would otherwise have to provide directions or answer questions.

At the heart of every great digital signage display is this: content. Make it look good and people will stop to look at it. Make it look bad or outdated, and chances are they won’t be looking at your screen again.

But with the flexibility of scheduling and real-time editing in ScreenCloud, all you’ve got to worry about is what you want to show. So here are 30 good examples of digital signage content to inspire.

The most obvious is social media. If you invest your efforts in social media, why not use this to bring your digital screens to life too? You can also utilize user-generated content.

Showing social media feeds on your digital signs can help pair your online reputation with your offline one, building credibility and helping customers buy into your brand.

Walls.io offers a unique feature to showcase sponsored ads from brands you partner with. This feature is called Sponsored Posts, and they are special posts on your social wall that aren’t filled with regular social content from your sources. Instead, you can upload specific images (or videos or just text) that you want to display there and have it show up on your wall in regular intervals.

Customers are 10 times more likely to observe dynamic digital signage content than static messages, which makes video the perfect content form; it’s also usually screen-ready in 16:9 format. Video to share on digital signage could be your showreel, a new demo video, or a customer caught on screen talking about how great you are. Add to your screen playlist either by direct upload or through an app such as YouTube or Vimeo.

If you need to create a quick notice, perhaps detailing a room change or a meeting time, there are a wealth of apps to make that happen. Like Noticeboard - an app that can be found in the ScreenCloud App Store. It allows you to create a quick and easy display in seconds, and also allows for real-time edits.

Add a news app to your digital signage playlist and you’ll always be up to date with the latest headlines. Your customers will sip their coffee longer, your guests will loiter in your reception hall.

As well as general news you can make your digital signage even more specific. RSS feeds are the gateway to unlocking any content you like, from Buzzfeed to your company blog to specialized news from your niche.

This type of content works well as ‘filler’ content in between video, ads and social media displays to stop your viewers from getting digital-overload.

Food is such a big part of our lives, it’s natural that we’re drawn to images, descriptions and menu boards showing it. Enter the digital menu board digital signage display.

This is one of the most important content displays you’ll create if you work in a restaurant, fast food chain or bar. It also works in an office cafeteria, an event setup or even as a fun noticeboard where you can swap menu items out for things you’re working on or fun descriptions of your team members. If you’re a franchise, this works especially well as you can change the price of an item across all screens and locations from one ScreenCloud login.

Data-driven companies are more likely to succeed – because they can easily see the areas that need attention. But most of the time this business-critical data is siloed and not seen by the teams that can make an immediate impact. Historically this data hasn’t been shown on screens due to security fears, which is why ScreenCloud developed Dashboards.

If you have a product, gaining visibility over feature development, customer number or what the future holds is kind of central to your work. That’s why pulling project management insights from Jira, Trello or your favorite project management tool and sharing them through digital signage in your office helps everyone to stay on the product pulse.

We love Slack at ScreenCloud. Like many startups, it’s how we do about 90% of our communication. So when a room’s really crucial to what we do, like our #praise room, we share it on our digital signage screens. This is made really easy with the Slack app.

Digital signage is a great canvas for all of your sales, small or large. Share real-time sales messages, promote offers and encourage customers to buy when the price is right. These can be easily created in Canvas.

How much time do you think your reception staff spend directing people to the right floor or meeting room? We love using the building directory app to share details of where everything is through our digital signage screens. The best part? If a room changes, you can update the screen easily unlike your static signs. Here are some non-obvious benefits of wayfinding in retail.

As well as advertising your own content, digital signage is a great method for selling advertising space within your building or store. Simple Playlist setup means you can schedule specific advertising slots, upload sponsored content between your own notices, or have dedicated days or areas where only advertising is shown.

If travel is essential to your customers or employees, then sharing a live travel information board is a great use of your digital signage. As you can see here, this provides up to the minute travel details on buses, trains and trams for your local area.

The benefit of digital signage over static signage or printed pamphlets is that it can be updated in real-time and pushed out instantly. This gives you the power to update signs with last-minute offers or promotions on items that are low in stock.

Imagine having a method of internal communication that allowed you to broadcast to your entire company, at the click of a button… That’s exactly what ScreenCloud Broadcast can do for you. This makes it easy to share company broadcasts that go out to all screens simultaneously with news, praise or health and safety announcements. Broadcast can securely live-stream meetings or announcements to screens in your office, and also onto the mobiles or desktop screens of remote or deskless workers, making sure everyone gets the news.

Digital signage can be used in retail to show-off in-store promotions and increase the number of customers who take up offers as soon they’re available. Couple posters with reviews, user-generated social media content and ads to really drive your brand home.

SOLETRADER uses digital signage to share the company’s Instagram feed, promoting more discussion and helping customers to see its shoes out in the world.

Who doesn’t love an inspirational quote? Using digital signage to share motivational quotes works in almost any scenario. In the ScreenCloud office, we even share quotes of things our Founders have said to keep the team inspired and uplifted.

In churches, sermon timetables, sermon quotes and hymns are both ways you could use digital signage to attract and retain more members to your sessions.

Everyone likes to see where they are in a leaderboard, whether that’s in sales or counting reps in the gym. Use your digital screens to show off this leaderboard and add an additional layer to your customer/employee experience. You can create it easily using Google Slides, or for something more automated, check out a tool like Bonusly, as shown below.

In the same way you might use your digital signage to share leaderboards, you could also entice employees or customers in with competitions. Promoting giveaways or asking them to submit something (like an Instagram image) for the chance to win, is a great use of your digital screens. Create a poster using Canvas and add a QR code to link through to a competition landing page.

Screens are great for all of the good stuff we like to put out into the world, but they’re also a good vehicle when you need to make an emergency notice that needs to reach a lot of people. For (planned) fire drills, you can schedule the alert to pop up on your screens, otherwise, have a template at the ready to push live should you need to display it in the moment.

Ever had a bad meeting room experience? Someone waiting awkwardly outside? Knocking before you’re finished to ask ‘how long’? Same. It’s why using small screens, iPads or tablets you have laying around is an awesome use of digital signage. We wrote more about how to set this up here.

If you work in an art gallery or somewhere you want to show off work, then digital signage is a great way to showcase photos, videos or actual designs of something special you’ve been working on.

Of course digital signage can always be used to create a pretty picture, but when it’s seriously useful, that’s when it makes the biggest difference. Digital signage is increasingly being used to facilitate and improve internal communication strategies. From sharing company notices, to key information and reinforcing health and safety training messages, so that they’re always seen.

Digital signage is a segment of electronic signage. Digital displays use technologies such as LCD, LED, projection and e-paper to display digital images, video, web pages, weather data, restaurant menus, or text. They can be found in public spaces, transportation systems, museums, stadiums, retail stores, hotels, restaurants and corporate buildings etc., to provide wayfinding, exhibitions, marketing and outdoor advertising. They are used as a network of electronic displays that are centrally managed and individually addressable for the display of text, animated or video messages for advertising, information, entertainment and merchandising to targeted audiences.

Navigation – with interactive screens (in the floor, for example, as with "informational footsteps" found in some tourist attractions, museums and the like) or with other means of "dynamic wayfinding".

Reservations – small, interactive screens on walls or desks that allow employees to reserve the space for a limited time and integrate with a room and resource scheduling platform.

Digital signage is used in restaurants through an interactive menu screen that rotates promotional offers. Restaurants use digital signage both indoors and outdoors, with the latter needing a form

Digital signage is widely used in shopping malls as a form of directory or map display. Uses of digital signage include a wayfinding kiosk, enabling the customer to find their path through an interactive touchscreen. Recent digital signage have begun combining interactive advertisement with wayfinding application. This will offer shoppers who interact with the advertisement of the tenant in the shopping mall to the store. Another usage is disseminating relevant information such as the schedule of an event or campaign.

The hospitality industry uses digital signage to display crucial information at a convenient and visible location for all its patron. A digital signage is capable of functioning as a virtual concierge in hotels and as entertainment for conferences during waiting room.

Digital signage is placed in the lobby, concession stands and displays advertisement before the movie begins. This informs customers about other theater offerings and scheduling, increasing concession sales and gaining other sources of revenue.

One specific use of digital signage is for out-of-home advertising in which video content, advertisements, and/or messages are displayed on digital signs with the goal of delivering targeted messages, to specific locations and/or consumers, at specific times. This is often called "digital out of home" (DOOH).

Digital signage can be used for school cafeteria menu boards, digitized noticeboards, and as an element of smart campuses. The University of Minnesota has installed 300 digital signage boards, updated with real-time data.

Digital signs can interact with mobile phones using SMS messaging and Bluetooth. SMS can be used to post messages on the displays, while Bluetooth allows users to interact directly with what they see on screen. In addition to mobile interactivity, networks are also using technology that integrates social and location-based media interactivity. This technology enables end users to upload photos and messages to social networks as well as text messages.

The widespread use of smartphones led to the development of screen–smart device interaction technologies. These allow smartphone users to interact directly with the digital signage screen, for example, participate in a poll, play a game, or share social network content. JPEG images and MPEG4 videos remain the dominant digital content formats for the digital signage industry. For interactive content, HTML5 and Unity3D are widely used due to their popularity among web developers and multimedia designers.

Context-aware digital signage leverages technologies such as sensors, cameras, beacons, RFID technologies, software programs and network connectivity including the Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor the ambient environment, process information and deliver promotional messages based on environmental cues.

Digital signs rely on a variety of hardware to deliver the content. The components of a typical digital sign installation include one or more display screens, one or more media players, and a content management server. Sometimes two or more of these components are present in a single device but typically there is a display screen, a media player, and a content management server that is connected to the media player over a network. One content management server may support multiple media players and one media player may support multiple screens. Stand-alone digital sign devices combine all three functions in one device and no network connection is needed. Digital signage media players run on a variety of operating systems including Windows, Linux, Android and iOS.

Rapidly dropping prices for large plasma and LCD screens have led to a growing increase in the number of digital sign installations.video wall. With the release of the HDMI 2.1 standard in 2017, wall resolution can reach 4K at higher refresh rates, 8K displays, up to 10K in some applications.

Digital signage displays use content management systems and digital media distribution systems which can either be run from personal computers and servers or regional/national media hosting providers. In many digital sign applications, content must be regularly updated to ensure that the correct messages are being displayed. This can either be done manually as and when needed, through a scheduling system, using a data feed from a content provider (e.g. Canadian Press, Data Call Technologies, Bloomberg LP, Thomson Reuters, AHN), or an in-house data source.

Whenever the display, media player and content server are located apart there is a need for audio-video wiring between the display and the media player and between the media player and the content server. The connection from media player to display is normally a VGA, DVI, HDMI or Component video connection. Sometimes this signal is distributed over Cat 5 cables using transmitter and receiver baluns allowing for greater distances between display and player and simplified wiring. The connection from media player to the content server is usually a wired Ethernet connection although some installations use wireless Wi-Fi networking.

Some digital signage with the ability to offer interactive media content will come with a usage reporting function. Each interaction users have made with the digital signage such as the photos that were taken, the number of games that were played will be recorded in the digital signage and produced in the form of a usage report. From the report, owners of the digital signage will be able to gauge the effectiveness of the particular advertisement or media content that was in play at the specific hour based on the number of times interaction has been made. Furthermore, if the digital signage is integrated with kinect, the signage will be able to determine the proximity of the consumer to the display and their demographic details such as age, gender for further analytic and consumer behavior study.

Digital content is managed via display control software. This control software can be a stand-alone dedicated program or integrated with hardware. New messages can be created from an inventory of audio, video, image, graphics, words and phrases which are assembled in different combinations and permutations to yield new messages in real-time.

Digital content displayed on the signage is presented in one of the following formats:Text - Scrolling text. Either scrolling text, or text dynamically updated via external Newsfeed source.

Interactive interfaces - Integration of signage with a touch screen, beacons, sensors, RFID technologies, to allow for two-way communications with the users. Interactive digital signage helps to engage users and may also assist advertisers to gain insight into customer behavior.

Prior to the advent of digital signage throughout the industries, electronic paper were used as display devices. Electronic paper were used to hold static texts and images indefinitely without electricity. The disadvantage to electronic paper as a form of digital signage is the limited reach of information transmission. Users that need to update the information will need to be in the same retail store, or be within the proximity for shopping malls. This required manual work from store staffs and shopping mall staff in maintaining the device with the latest information.

First generation of digital signage display utilize LED board, projection screens or other emerging display types like interactive surfaces or organic LED screens (OLED). A dot matrix display digital signage will relay the information within a database. All the information must be inputted manually by a person before the message display is updated. This form of digital signage is most commonly used in both train stations, airports, and other areas where information must be conveyed to the mass public. The downside of having dot matrix digital signage is the lack of media player. This digital signage will not be able to play multimedia contents.

The second generation of digital signage is able to play multimedia contents and is controlled by a centralized management system. Digital audiovisual (av) content is reproduced on TVs and monitor displays of a digital sign network from at least one media player (usually a small computer unit, but DVD players and other types of media sources may also be used). Various hardware and software options exist. These range from portable media players that can output JPG slide shows or loops of MPEG-2 video to networks consisting of multiple players and servers that offer control over enterprise-wide or campus-wide displays at many venues from a single location. The former are ideal for small groups of displays that can be updated via USB flash drive, SD card or CD-ROM. Another option is the use of D.A.N. (Digital Advertising Network) players that connect directly to the monitor and to the internet, to a WAN (Wide Area Network), or to a LAN (Local Area Network). This allows the end user the ability to manage multiple D.A.N. players from any location. The end user can create new advertising or edit existing advertisements and then upload changes to the D.A.N. via the internet or other networking options.

APIs for some digital sign software allow customized content management interfaces through which end-users can manage their content from one location.

More advanced digital sign software allows content to be automatically created by the media players (computers) and servers on a minute-by-minute basis, combining real-time data, from news to weather, prices, transport schedules, etc., with av content to produce the most up-to-date content.

The current generation of digital signage builds onto the previous generation with the added function to interact with the system. Users will be able to interact with the advertisement, scroll through the product menu, or share their information online via the new generation of digital signage. The interactive digital signage opens up interaction and ability to collect more personalize information. Some common uses of interactive digital signage are for users to take a picture and then connect to their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or other Social media platform to share the photo they have taken.
