A Marine LCD Display (LCD) is a Marine Display dedicated to displaying data relevant to the function of marine electronics on the vessel. Examples of Marine LCD Displays include RADAR, Chartplotters, Remote Displays, and FishFinders.

Like most marine plotters the MFD12 has an AR coating to assist with sunlight view ability. This surface should NEVER be cleaned with Windex ™ or other cleaners that damage the surface. When you get salt spray and other contaminates on the screen it should be washed clean with clear water and wiped dry with a microfiber cloth like the one included with the unit. If salt etches in the screen or the AR coating is damaged from other cleaners or contaminates, the only way to fix it, is to replace the LCD, which can be an expensive option. If you feel you need something better than water and microfiber cloth; then I would suggest products made specifically for marine displays like Electro-wipes. (www.bajaproducts.com) I am sure there are other suitable products that are alcohol and ammonia free, but this one is used only as an example, and not specifically endorsed by Furuno. The glass is bonded directly to the LCD, so you normally won’t see issues behind the glass. Please take care when cleaning and caring for your screen.

Two of the major players in the marine radar and multifunction navigation display system market have just introduced advanced technology digital radars. Furuno’s Ultra High Definition (UHD) radar and Raymarine’s High Definition (HD) radar provide significant improvements in all aspects of performance. The manufacturers’ claims that these (choose a superlative) Ultra High Definition or High Definition radars provide the navigator with a clearer, more precisely defined image of the surrounding waters are confirmed by what you will see on the display screens. Both radars digitize the analog radar energy received by their antennas and use advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology to extract the desired navigation information while automatically suppressing noise and interference.

These new digital high-definition radars are components of their manufacturers latest integrated multifunction navigation, NavNet 3D from Furuno and the G-Series Navigation System from Raymarine. Radar images can be displayed individually, in a split screen mode that provides the full functionality of having two complete radars on board, or overlaid on the navigation chart. The introduction of both of these comprehensive navigation systems marks a significant advance in the state of the art for this class of equipment.

The radar images on both the Furuno and Raymarine multifunction displays were clearly superior to their previous offerings. Both very small and quite massive targets were very sharply defined. The screens were remarkably free of sea clutter and other normally encountered intermittent interference. Both radars can be operated in a simultaneous dual-range mode, providing the functional advantage of two separate radars.

Other manufacturers, including Garmin, JRC and Northstar, have offered yacht radars that process the received signal digitally, however they have not yet achieved the level of performance or struck the spark of excitement that the combination of features incorporated in these new (and somewhat more costly) Furuno and Raymarine units are likely to create, especially when the advanced simultaneous dual-range features of these systems are viewed on their new NavNet 3D and G-Series chart plotter displays.

The Furuno and Raymarine high-definition radars provide a new and very useful dual-range capability, without the performance compromise inherent in previous systems that used a single pulse length and pulse repetition rate for both ranges. These new radars can “look twice,” alternately transmitting radar energy at the pulse length and PRF required to produce the optimum radar image at each of the selected ranges. The navigator is presented with two independently controlled screen images, which are optimized for each range. Each screen image is managed separately, with automatic optimization of the display or with full manual adjustment of each control. The result is the full-functional equivalent of having two separate radars.

The move toward incorporating the entire radar transmitter, receiver and data processing circuitry within the radar antenna assembly (pioneered by Si-Tex and more recently used by Garmin and Northstar) continues in the new Furuno UHD and Raymarine HD radars. The benefit of incorporating the entire radar in the antenna is obvious during installation. The rather large diameter multi-conductor cable previously required to connect the antenna system to the remainder of the radar signal processing circuitry is eliminated and replaced by a two-wire power cable and a digital signal bus Ethernet cable (although Raymarine avoids the term Ethernet when describing their communication bus, essentially an Ethernet bus with a different IP structure). All of the control commands to the radar antenna system and the processed radar information flow to and from the wheelhouse equipment via the digital bus. Furuno has equipped its radar antenna assemblies with a pair of NMEA 2000 connectors. GPS receivers, weather sensors and other devices installed on or near the radar mast and which employ the NMEA 2000 data communication protocol, may be plugged into the antenna. Then the vessel’s data network automatically connects them to the system, eliminating the need for additional cabling.

The screen image of a marine radar is updated in step with the rotation of the antenna, with most operating at a constant 24 rpm. Radars used on high-speed craft or on rivers where more frequent image updates on shorter ranges can be essential for safety may operate at a higher speed, usually 48 rpm. The new Furuno ultrahigh- definition radar automatically adjusts antenna rotation speeds to 24, 36 and 48 rpm depending on the range.

In addition to their high definition data presentations the new Furuno and Raymarine radars offer expanded ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) capability. The Furuno can track 30 targets, the Raymarine a maximum of 25. Both systems can plot AIS (Automatic Information System) data on the radar screen, greatly simplifying the identification of targets, the surveillance and tracking of their movement relative to your own vessel, significantly enhancing radar’s primary purpose, collision avoidance.

Furuno’s Navnet TZ Touch with a 14.1” 1280 x 800 crystal clear display has blown away the technology of traditional plotters packing endless features and unsurpassed speed into one unit. Both systems can be overlaid onto the chartplotter to give you a much better view of what is around your boat as well as show you if you are on a collision course with another vessel. AIS is connected via NMEA 2000 and sends information about other AIS equipped vessels in your area. Information like vessel name, call sign, position, course, speed over ground, and other useful information. Furuno Digital Radar is offered in either a radar dome or open array. Open array radars are recommended for long range vessels as well as fisherman looking for birds offshore. 1.3 Flush Mounting, Fixed at Front If you do not have the enough space to fix the display unit from the rear, you can fix it from the front with the optional flush mount kit OP26-36 (code no.: 001-497-450) or OP26-4 (code no.: 001- 080-850).

3. Attach the flush mounting panel (15) to the display unit from the rear with the washer head screws (M410, 8 places, torque: 1.2 Nm). Do not confuse the top and bottom of the panel and check that screw holes on the panel and unit match.

3. Attach the F-Mount Hood Gasket 15 to the top brim, the Hood Gasket Bottom 15 to the bottom brim, and then attach the F-Mount Hood Gasket Side 15 to the right and left sides of the display unit from the rear side as shown the figure below.

2.1 RGB/DVI Setting You can adjust the screen from the [RGB], [DVI-D1] and [DVI-D2] ports separately. Turn on ex- ternal equipment and adjust the display unit as follows.

*: When inputting SXGA, a circle may be displayed as an ellipse because the aspect ratio differs. In this case, select [NORMAL] from the [DISP MODE] menu item on the [RGB], [DVI1], or [DVI2] menus. The right and left on the screen are left blank, but this is normal.

DISP MODE* Selects the displaying method. [FULL]: Shows the input signal on entire screen. [NORMAL]: Shows the input signal with original aspect ratio.

2.2 Video Composite Signal Setting You can adjust the VIDEO1, 2 or 3 signal from the VIDEO1, VIDEO2 and VIDEO3 ports separate- ly. The VIDEO1, 2 or 3 signal is displayed in the PIP window also.

1. While you hold the PIP key, turn on the display unit. Press and hold the PIP key for more than five seconds. Note: When the slide switch is ON, turn on the connected external equipment while pressing the PIP key to turn on the display unit.

2. Press the or key to select a signal. You can also select the signal by pressing the DISP key continuously. [RGB]: The signal from the RGB port is displayed. [DVI1], [DVI2]: The signal from the selected DVI port is displayed. [VIDEO1] - [VIDEO3]: The external video from the selected VIDEO port is displayed.

3.5 How to Select the Source for the PIP Window Select the source for the PIP (picture-in-picture) window as follows. The PIP window is available on the RGB, DVI1 or DVI2 display.

1. When the RGB, DVI1 or DVI2 display appears, press the PIP key. The PIP selection window appears. The signal names are shown as you customized at paragraph 2.3.2 on the window. This window disappears if there is no operation for five sec- onds.

2. Press the or key to select the VIDEO port required. [VIDEO1] (2 or 3) can also be selected by pressing the PIP key continuously. When you select the [VIDEO1], [VIDEO2] or [VIDEO3], the PIP window is displayed. To close the PIP window, select [OFF].

When FAR-21x7 series is connected to the [DVI-D1] or [DVI-D2] port, you can adjust the brilliance of the display unit from the FAR-21x7 series connected.

4. Press the or key to set the desired input item. [OFF]: You can not adjust the brilliance from the external equipment. [DVI1]: When the DVI1 is displayed, the brilliance signal from DVI-D1 port controls this dis-

plays brilliance. The /BRILL key is available for the screen other than the DVI1. [DVI2]: When the DVI2 is displayed, the brilliance signal input from DVI-D2 port controls this

Remove dust and dirt from the display unit with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners to clean any part of the display unit. They can remove paint and markings.
