As with most Sony TVs, the native contrast is great. It doesn"t get better than this for an LED TV. Note: This only applies to the 55". The 65" has an IPS panel, so worse blacks.
As with all VA LED TVs, it loses color saturation and contrast when you view it off-axis. Note: This only applies to the 55". The 65" has an IPS panel, so a better viewing angle.
If your Sony TV screen is damaged, your first impulse might be to purchase an entirely new TV set, and in many cases, you may need to. However, with a little effort, you may be able to restore your damaged TV to its former condition. You can find replacement parts for many brands, ranging from Sony TV screens to Samsung LCD displays. How do you deal with a damaged screen?
Before you select any replacement parts, take a look at your TV and survey the damage. There are many TV components that can cause screen malfunction. Many flat screen TVs have glass panels that cover the Plasma, LED, or LCD component. If this surface is cracked or damaged, repairing may require nothing more than a new glass panel. If the underlying Plasma, LED, or LCD screen is damaged, the repair may be more extensive.
If the damage is limited to the screen, you may need one or both of the following components:Bezel: The bezel is the thin panel that sits atop the Plasma, LED, or LCD screen.
There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used.IPS
The most widely used panels are those with 6, 8, and 10 bits for each of the RGB components of the pixel. They provide 18-, 24-, and 30-bit color, respectively.8 bits
The maximum number of colors, which the display is able to reproduce, depends on the type of the panel in use and color enhancing technologies like FRC.16777216 colors
The backlight is the source of light of the LCD display panels. The type of backlight determines the image quality and the color space of the display. There are various backlights such as CCFL, LED, WLED, RGB-LED, and etc.Direct LED
Sony"s latest 2017 LCD-based TVs are now up for preorder. They start at $2,400 for the 55-inch size in the midrange X900E series, which is $100 more than LG"s 55-inch B6 OLED TV from 2016, which we called the best-performing TV we"ve ever tested. In Sony"s higher-end
If you"re wondering about Sony"s own OLED-based TV, the A1E series, Sony has yet to announce its price or when it will be available. Based on the prices of its 2017 LCDs, however, I think the A1E"s rumored price of $2,000 for a 55-incher is wildly optimistic.
So what does that mean for high-end TV shoppers in 2017? Just like Samsung with its similarly priced QLED televisions, Sony is claiming picture quality advantages over OLED technology, including superior light output and color. Based on my experience and previous reviews, however, I don"t expect either QLED or Sony"s new LCD TVs to beat OLED in overall picture quality. In other words, OLED remains the TV technology to beat, and high-end LCD TVs will have to be as good or better at the same price (or lower) to compete.
I"ll know for sure when I can compare Sony"s new LCD TVs and Samsung"s QLEDs with LG"s 2016 and 2017 OLED models in the lab. In the meantime I can compare their prices as far as I know.Sony high-end 2017 LCD TVs vs. LG OLED TVs
The 2016 X930D was one of the best-performing TV we tested in 2016, and the high-end Z9D (which I haven"t tested yet) is widely thought to be one of the best LCD TVs ever made, so Sony"s new 2017 models have a great picture-quality pedigree.
The main difference between the X900E series above and the two more expensive X930E sets is their local-dimming backlight scheme. The more-expensive X930E uses edge lighting while the X900E uses full-array. Despite the fact that full-array usually performs better in our tests, Sony says the edge-lit X930E is actually the superior performer with better contrast (light output and black levels), thanks to an improved version of the Slim Backlight Drive system we liked so much last year. Meanwhile the highest-end Sony LCD aside from the Z9D (which remains on sale throughout 2017) is the 75-inch X940E, which uses a full-array backlight and should be a superb performer.
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Plasma TV suppliers such as Panasonic maker Matsushita Electric, already outnumbered by the rival LCD camp, are expected to lose further ground as LCD TVs encroach on the 40-inch-class market, a plasma stronghold.A woman is silhouetted against a new sony "Bravia" flat panel LCD TV in Tokyo, August 30, 2006. Growing demand for higher-resolution television models is giving a leg up to LCD TVs, promoted by Sony and many others in Taiwan and South Korea, paving the way for consolidation among plasma companies, analysts say. Growing demand for higher-resolution models is also giving a leg up to liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs, promoted by Sony Corp.and many others in Taiwan and South Korea, paving the way for consolidation among plasma companies, analysts say.
It is technologically difficult and often costly for plasma makers to give a full high-definition function to models with a screen size of less than 50 inches, while LCD TV makers are aggressively promoting full HD models in that segment although prices are generally higher.
“This Christmas season probably is the last chance for (plasma TV makers) to promote 42-inch models. By this time next year probably there will be no price difference between plasma and LCD TVs,” Credit Suisse analyst Wanli Wang said.
He expects LCD TV prices to fall 30 percent or more in 2007, compared with a decline of 15 to 20 percent for plasma TVs, due to ample LCD panel supplies.
Sharp Corp.in August started LCD production at its Kameyama No. 2 plant, the world"s first to cut panels from eighth-generation glass substrates, which can yield eight 40-inch-class panels, compared with just three panels from the sixth-generation glass used at its first Kameyama plant.
DisplaySearch forecasts that the plasma TV market will start shrinking in 2009 after hitting $24 billion in 2008, while it sees LCD TV demand reaching $75 billion in 2008 and $93 billion in 2010 - a trend that will likely make companies offering both LCD and plasma lines think twice about their strategy.
South Korea"s Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.and LG Electronics Inc.as well as Japan"s Hitachi Ltd.offer both LCD and plasma TVs. Matsushita also sells both products, although it heavily bets on plasma.
“The larger panels become, the more important response speeds for moving images are. In this point, plasma still excels,” Matsushita President Fumio Ohtsubo told reporters last month.
CPT’s Wu agrees that plasma panels, especially 50-inch and larger ones, do excel LCDs in some aspects of picture quality, but he says the sheer size of the LCD camp will help LCD panels overcome whatever drawbacks they have in a timely manner.
About 80 percent of global flat screen R&D spending is being allocated to LCD panels, and the remaining 20 percent to plasma and some other technologies, Credit Suisse’s Wang said.
With the 40-inch-class market gradually taken over by LCD TVs, plasma models need to migrate to the market for 50-inch TVs and above, but demand is not as well developed there, analysts say.
Although demand is limited, competition is not necessarily mild. Instead of LCD models, plasma TVs will be pitting themselves against another strong rival, rear-projection TVs.
The 810C is available in 55″ and 65″ models and are fashioned with a plexiglass screen with a semi-gloss finish. The black bezel surrounding the screen measures just over a 1/2″ at its narrowest point. The panel depth on the display is a bit on the bulky side measuring approximately three inches thick at its deepest point.
The screen is illuminated with a direct-lit LED lighting array (not full-array w/ local dimming). This design allows for a more uniformly lit screen (depending on how many LEDs are used), when compared to edge-lit LED designs. Direct-lit displays also help increase contrast and black-level reproduction. One drawback, however, is an increase in this display’s panel depth to allow for the direct-lit LED design.
Smart TV featuring Android TV w/ Google Play:The XBR65X810C is equipped with an Android operating system and incorporates Android TV with access to a wide variety of apps from Google Play which has been optimized for playback on this TV. Android TV gives you access to movies, music, sports and other entertainment apps. In addition, view content from your smartphone or tablet on this TV using Google Castfor a more engaging experience on this TV’s much larger screen.
The XBR810C delivers decent contrast and black levelswhen viewed in a moderately lit room. Black levels were reasonably dark with occasional minimal grayish overtones being revealed. Images and objects in dark scenes revealed adequate shadow detail without any objects being obscured from view. However, when viewing this TV in a dark environment, contrast and black levels were noticeably lacking in performance in the areas of dynamic punch and deep black depth, which weren’t at the levels I would have liked to have seen. This was most likely due to this TV having an IPS panel (65″ model) instead of a VA panel that can deliver much better contrast and black levels.
Side angle or off-axis viewing performance has always been an Achilles heel for most LED-based TVs, and the XBR810C was no exception to this picture anomaly; however, this display performed better than average in this area and had minimal amounts of contrast and color saturation loss when viewed at wide angles which were most likely due to its IPS panel design.
The sound quality of the two down-firing speakers was ok – I heard the usual thin and lean audio output with very little bass output. This is the typical performance for most flat panel designs. So adding a decent soundbar will take your audio experience to the next level.
Sony’s XBR65X810C is a great value in the ever-expanding 4K UHD market. It offers a set of very useful features, very good picture performance and a premium designated marquee status, all at a price that’s totally within reach for most consumers who are in search of a large screen 4K TV.
"Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony"s shares of S-LCD Corporation, the two companies" LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung," Samsung Electronics said in a statement.
"In order to respond to such challenging conditions and to strengthen their respective market competitiveness, the two companies have agreed to shift to a new LCD panel business alliance," Samsung said.
For its part, Samsung said the full ownership of the venture will give it "heightened flexibility, speed and efficiency in both panel production and business operations".
