Competition versions get this spectacular leather and color-matching Alcantara headliner as standard equipment, but it’s a $3,500 option on the regular X5 M for any of the interesting colors. There’s a thigh bolster you have to hoist yourself over each time you step in, but there’s enough give in it that you can slide over without too much discomfort. We’re sure those bolsters will show plenty of wear as these cars age. With the $3,600 Executive package equipped, our tester had heated, cooled and massaging front buckets. You’ll need the massage to soothe your poor back after a few potholes. The powered seats themselves adjust in every way imaginable, and they even have adjustable bolsters that do good work at keeping you held in tight around corners. Instead of wood or aluminum trim, BMW slaps carbon fiber everywhere. It’s splashed across the dash, doors and makes up the entire gear lever surround. The cover for the cupholders and wireless phone charger is even done in carbon fiber with a prominent “X5 M Competition” badge on it. Sometimes, the carbon fiber is too much and overpowers everything else in the interior on sports cars. That’s not the case here. It’s luxurious and sophisticated with a heavy dose of sport — just what the X5 M needs. The entire interior takes on this luxurious-sport theme, too. Every driver assistance option in BMW’s arsenal is available. You can get soft-close doors, heated/cooled cupholders and a full panoramic sunroof. It has every luxury accoutrement that BMW offers plus the sporty touches laid on top of that. While recent reports have detailed talks between Apple and BMW related to Apple’s behind-the-scenes electric car project, BMW has long been one of the last major holdouts to bring Apple’s current in-dash CarPlay platform to its vehicles. That looks like it will change later this year when at least two models will get support for CarPlay.

The news comes from a price list for the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M models that was spotted on BMW’s German site and shared in a forum thread at bimmerpost.com. The price list is set to take effect on August 1st, and within BMW confirms CarPlay support will be enabled sometime in the second half of the year, indicating that support for the feature could come through a later update.

The option is listed alongside new tech options for the BMW X5 and X6 M models including a large 10.25” touchscreen LCD like BMW already includes in its 7 Series models (pictured above).

A Google translation of the BMW price list text above appears to mention wireless capabilities as well, something that we’ve previously heard is coming from other manufacturers. Currently CarPlay still requires a wired connection to an iPhone in most vehicles, but the protocol supports wireless connectivity since iOS 9.The translation reads, “…wireless and convenient use of the iPhone in your vehicle via Apple carplay… *Expected to be available in the 2nd half 2016.” It’s unclear, however, if the word wireless is simply getting lost in translation here and could refer to Bluetooth.

Several reports over the last year claimed that Apple had been in various negotiations with BMW, as well as Daimler and others, regarding its secretive electric vehicle project. The latest report claimed talks with BMW have since fallen apart, reportedly over disagreements on how data collection obtained from the vehicle would be handled. A separate report around the same time said Apple could use Magna for the project, an Austria-based vehicle manufacturer that BMW itself has contracted.

Apple earlier this year published an official list of CarPlay partners listing car manufacturers as well as supported vehicles by year and model on its website. BMW is yet to be added to the list, although the automaker is on Apple’s list of committed partners without specifying models.

The 2023 X3 SUV edges in on its four-door brethren"s territory with a satisfying blend of refinement and driver engagement. As its name implies, the X3 is the crossover equivalent to the renowned 3-series sedan, and it shares its powertrains with that car. Entry-level models are powered by a 248-hp turbo-four while M40i models get a boost from the company"s revered 382-hp turbo six—an engine that never ceases to amaze us with its velvety muscle. A handsome exterior design gives the X3 enough curb appeal to fit in among style mavens such as the Genesis GV70 and Volvo XC60. The X3"s spacious interior is soberly styled but lined with premium materials and desirable technology. But it"s the X3"s frisky handling that endears it most to enthusiast drivers like those on our staff and, as an added bonus, its athletic road manners don"t compromise its genteel nature when cruising nor its all-around SUV practicality.

Regardless of the exact power output, all BMW engines exude a similarly strong and refined character. While the M40i"s 382-hp six-cylinder motivates it to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, we suggest buyers stick with the four-cylinder, which is plenty powerful. The turbocharged four-cylinder collaborates with the excellent eight-speed automatic to make easy passes in traffic and sip fuel on the highway. The entry X3 sDrive30i only drives the rear wheels. That won"t be a problem for anyone living in the Sun Belt, but buyers in snowy states will want to upgrade to the all-wheel-drive xDrive30i model.

With the 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder under its hood, the rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i and all-wheel-drive xDrive30i provide enough power to comfortably negotiate almost any traffic situation, but they"re hardly exhilarating. At our test track, the xDrive 30i required 6.2 seconds to reach 60 mph; we haven"t tested an sDrive30i model. The PorscheMacan S and the Audi Q5 are both quicker in our testing—the Porsche is substantially so. Those seeking a performance-oriented crossover will find the X3 M40i a lot more to their liking. Its muscular 382-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine provides almost brutish power, delivering a 4.1-second zero-to-60-mph time in our testing. The X3 actually feels more competent than some of BMW"s current sedans; it"s fun to drive and willing to arc around corners better than expected, although it doesn"t quite offer Macan levels of athleticism. The ride quality is well balanced with just enough firmness for a sporty feel without resulting in a rough ride over bumpy road surfaces. Our test vehicle came with an option we highly recommend, the adaptive suspension. Called Dynamic Damper Control; it adds Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro driving modes to the xDrive30i. An adaptive M suspension, available on the M40i, lowers the chassis 0.4 inch.

BMW"s iDrive interface provides everything a modern luxury car"s infotainment system should. A 10.3-inch infotainment display is standard and features in-dash navigation as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A larger 12.3-inch infotainment display is optional. Bluetooth phone connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and one USB port are standard, but every other infotainment feature is offered as an optional extra; for those looking to juice two devices at once, a second USB port is optional as is a wireless smartphone charging pad.
