Samsung’s LED C8000 and C6800 include Samsung’s Precision Dimming technology that merges the advantages of LED edge-lighting with the control of local dimming technology in directly back-lit LED televisions. After a full year of rising LCD TV panel prices, the natural effect of rising prices on both supply and demand has kicked in, and prices are starting to fall, based on our latest update and forecast of LCD TV prices. The demand surge, which resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, has eased and industry supply has caught up to demand. Prices in August and September are falling faster than expected and we now forecast that year-end prices will be lower than they were in December 2020, but still substantially higher than their all-time lows.

At around $2300 this the 46C7000 is on the pricey upper end of the 46" options scale – justified somewhat by the scaled up features set. There are few plasma options in this size category so LCD is it. Competition hails from the picture quality focused Sony XBR-46HX900, the local dimming 240Hz/480Hz LG 47LE8500, and the super thin Sharp 46LE820UN. 3D compatibility is a feature present in this model that commands attention and will likely be highly desirable for the early adapter set. But it would not surprise me to see the price on this TV drop later in 2010.

And in a sense, they — the consumer electronics people, that is — have been right. Each year has brought significantly lower prices and additional features to flat-panel sets, them into 40 million American homes, 34 percent of total households in the United States, according to a study done by the Leichtman Research Group.

Thanks to increasing worldwide sales and economies of scale, a wide range of large-screen HDTVs are now available for three-figure prices. At Wal-Mart, for example, 42- to 50-inch plasma and LCD sets can be found for $600 to $925. Some lesser-known brands in a 32-inch screen size are around $400.

VIEWING ANGLELCD televisions tend to have smaller viewing angles than plasma sets. So if your friends are over to watch the game, those sitting on the left and right of the screen will see an image with blacks that look gray; whites that are darker; reduced contrast; and colors that have shifted.

To counter that effect, Mr. Merson said, consumers should look for LCD televisions that use I.P.S., or in-plane switching technology. I.P.S. is available on Hitachi and Panasonic sets; Samsung and Sony have a similar technology called S-PVA.
