Which leads nicely on to Stranger Things. Strangely, I’ve found myself enjoying three seasons of this fantasy madness with my kids! Who would have thought. If you’ve been hiding under a rock, you probably haven’t heard of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers’ dark, mysterious, hyper cool 1980s adventurethon. It’s an evocative mix of The Goonies, Back to the Future, ET and your worst Stephen King nightmare, set in 1983 small-town America. The very nostalgic storyline centres around a group of kids as the heroes, a synth-heavy soundtrack, and a gripping, if not slightly terrifying, fantasy/sci-fi (also not my genre) plot!

It’s interesting that we should think of a TV show as a brand, but man what a massively popular brand it has become! It’s got an entire ecosystem beyond the screen, particularly around the show’s design, soundtrack and social media activity. The first touchpoint we come across is the moody opening titles sequence. Production studio, Imaginary Forces, is responsible for the stunning intro and typography. Set in the 1970s font, ITC Benguit, it recalls horror and sci-fi pulp fiction novels of the 80s. It’s loud and garish and almost even ugly (in an ironic kind of a way) at times. Only projects submitted to the ScreenCraft Sci-fi & Fantasy Competition AND that select this add-on are eligible for consideration in this category. Additionally, all projects that place in the Top 10 of the competition will automatically be considered.

One early capability will be to make it feasible to place sensors directly behind smartphone displays, making it possible to use the entire surface area of a phone. It will also simplify the “structured light” sensors that project patterns of dots used to perform face recognition.
