A titan of science fiction, Octavia E. Butler would have been 71 years old today. The author wrote compelling, diverse protagonists in a genre traditionally known for churning out white, male leads. Butler won two Nebula awards and two Hugo awards for her work, and she became the first sci-fi writer to be awarded the MacArthur Fellowship.

To be honest, i don"t remember much about third season. I rememeber that i like it, however, the magic was gone. No mystery anymore, it was just a good sci-fi tv show. Still, there were moments of greatness and i didn"t hate this new direction. There were good messages too, noone wants to live in an Orwellian society, the majority of people at least.
Red Rising, the first book in Pierce Brown’s sci-fi series of the same name, introduces readers to an interstellar caste system made of nightmares. From the all-powerful Golds who rule over the universe to the lowly Reds who toil beneath the Martian surface, everyone is born into a specific role in society. When Darrow discovers the horrifying truths behind his existence as a Red, he joins a plot to tear down the Golds’ rule. Brown delivers a story that’s as violent as it is captivating, gradually revealing the Golds’ twisted machinations to perpetuate a dystopian society. —Eric Smith
Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro plays a litany of tricks on his readers with Never Let Me Go, most notably sneaking a dystopian science-fiction premise into this literary meditation on mortality. Protagonist Kathy is a “carer,” and we gradually learn that carers help ease the final days of donors: clones raised to be harvested for their organs. Much of Never Let Me Go follows Kathy’s recollections of Hailsham, the boarding school where she grew up alongside fellow students Tommy and Ruth, and each revelation about Hailsham and the young clones’ place in the world is more heartbreaking than the last. Although the word “clone” brings to mind much flashier “hard” sci-fi, Ishiguro wastes no ink on trying to explain the genetics of it all. Never Let Me Go is a melancholy coming-of-age story with a cast fated since birth to never see an advanced age, and its dystopia is one all-too-familiar: a world in which certain classes live well, and others are effectively doomed. —Steve Foxe
PNG is a popular graphic file format, perhaps second only to JPG today. It has a few advantages over JPG and is easy to work with because it"s widely supported. Here"s what you need to know.
PNG, short for Portable Network Graphics, is a high-quality graphic file format that you can view in almost any graphic program, image viewer, or web browser.
The PNG format is an alternative to the slightly better-known JPG file. While JPG is the format of choice for consumers, especially for storing images in digital cameras, PNG is more popular among professionals in web design, and in fact is the successor to the now largely obsolete GIF format.
Supports transparency: PNG allows you to specify a transparent background, which is essential for illustrators and graphic designers. This allows irregular images, illustrations, and logos to sit on top of a background color.
There is simply no shortage of ways to view and use PNG files — it"s a common standard file format and is supported by virtually every major web browser, file viewer, graphic and photo program for Windows and Mac.
While the PNG format is common enough that you should have no trouble using, viewing and sharing it in that format, you might want to occasionally convert it to another format. A JPG version of the same image can be substantially smaller, for example, making it easier to share.
The good news is that almost any graphics program that displays a PNG file will let you convert it to another format like JPG, and for the most part, they all work essentially the same way. For example, here is how to convert a PNG file in Microsoft Paint:
