The MacBook Pro was first released in 2006, replacing the very popular PowerBook lineup. I remember being a little upset with Apple for making the switch to the intel processors, until I used one! After 16 years of the MacBook Pro, there are quite a few models that might need to get their screens replaced. The cost of the repair will depend on the year and model of the MacBook Pro, as well as the problem it is having with its screen. Below I will cover the most common models I see for repair and the cost of repairing each model. Full Display Replacement. The cost to replace the entire display assembly on a 2020 MacBook Pro model A2338 with a genuine Apple display assembly is $549.

Although there are multiple parts in a display assembly, you may not need to replace all of them to get your computer fully working again. Knowing the basic parts that are required to complete your MacBook screen repair will help you select the correct repair for your needs.

When the computer is open, the image is displayed on the LCD panel which is the part of the screen you can touch. The LCD panel is the most commonly broken part on a MacBook Pro screen. If you have a cracked screen, you will most likely need an LCD replacement.

It is very difficult (or sometimes not possible) to source the LCD panel for certain models of the MacBook Pro. When there is no LCD panel supply, a full display replacement is all that will be available.

You will likely need to replace the entire display assembly if there are any bends or dents on the corners of your display, or if the display was damaged by liquid. The full display assembly includes the LCD panel, the back housing where the Apple logo is, the clutch cover along the bottom of the screen where it says “MacBook Pro”, and the hinges.

The clutch cover is the part of the MacBook that runs along the bottom of the screen and says “MacBook Pro” on it. Sometimes, I see clutch covers that are cracked or broken, but the LCD panel itself is working fine. This means that if the computer works perfectly and the entire screen is visible and working, but there is a crack along the bottom of the screen in the part that says “MacBook Pro”, you just need a clutch cover replacement rather than an LCD replacement.

The MacBook Pro camera is not known for having issues. If the camera does stop responding, the issue is most likely with the cables that connect to the camera, or the logic board inside your computer. Sometimes though, the cameras will fail and require replacement. Unfortunately with the way these MacBook Pros are assembled, you usually have to replace the LCD panel when you replace the camera.

On older model Macs from the 2006-2012 era, the hinges connecting the display to the computer sometimes cracked or broke, causing the display to not stay up properly. This was much rarer on the newer MacBook Pros, but it can happen. Some models required an entire display replacement in order to replace the hinges, while others allowed the hinges to be replaced separately. Because Apple has started routing cables through the hinges, usually the entire display assembly had to be replaced if there are issues with the hinges.

Some things to consider when looking for a shop to complete a screen repair on a MacBook Pro include the number of years the shop has been in business, the quality of its work, and the price they charge for the service. With so many repair shops to choose from, doing your research can help you find the best possible option for your needs.

What is the shop’s policy on data privacy? Make sure you’re comfortable with how your personal information will be treated before you give them your business. Some repairs require the technician to log in to your computer during the repair process, while other repairs do not.

Choose a computer repair shop that you feel good about after researching your options. A little effort upfront can save you a lot of hassle later on when you need your MacBook screen repaired.

If you have a MacBook Pro that is not covered under AppleCare+, you will spend between $575 and $900 repairing your screen through Apple. There are a couple of different ways that the display repair is billed, so the price you are quoted will vary, but these are the standard quotes. Note that each damage tier is added to by a labor charge, which is usually $100. So a display repair for a 13″ MacBook Pro is usually about $480 + a $100 labor charge. If you were to take your MacBook Pro to a different repair shop, the price could be significantly lower or higher depending on the shop you go to.

Tier 3 Accidental Damage covers the display as well as other components that are damaged, as long as the logic board is still working properly. This tier is usually $825-1000 +labor at the Apple Store.

When you buy your computer, you are given the option to purchase AppleCare+. AppleCare+ does partially cover the cost of repairing a cracked screen on a MacBook Pro. If you decide to purchase AppleCare+ and crack your screen, the total for the repair will be $99.

I don’t recommend that beginners or intermediate-level technicians attempt to replace the LCD on a MacBook Pro. It’s best to start practicing with bad screens before moving on to repairs like this. LCDs are delicate, and you can cause all kinds of problems during the repair, like scratching backlight sheets or ripping cables under the LCD panel.

The display assembly replacement is a lot easier and can be completed by somebody with some technical repair experience. Apple has a self-repair program that covers the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro. You can read about the program and get links in my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro screen replacement guide. The self-repair program is a great way to save money on the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro.

I will say that I have seen a lot of damaged screens when people attempt to repair the LCD panel on a MacBook Pro themselves. Normally, the damage is not fixable and you have to then replace the entire display assembly.

If you are experienced enough to complete the repair, you can find the panels on public sites like iFixit, eBay, Amazon, etc. As a shop, you will probably want to work with your vendor to get panels that have a guarantee so you can hold them in stock. The price for panels usually ranges from around $250 to about $550 for the newest model. Generally, the panels decrease in price with time, but sometimes if an LCD panel is not used frequently by apple, they will become rare and cost more over time for new ones.

You can repair a MacBook Air Screen yourself with the right tools, but it’s a moderately difficult repair. Unless you have some experience in repairing electronics, I don’t recommend trying to do it yourself.

Apple will replace the MacBook screen for free if there are no cracks or physical damage present, but the laptop must be under warranty or AppleCare+. Sometimes screens will stop working on their own, and these types of problems will be covered under your warranty.

Apple charges between $575 and $900 to replace most MacBook Pro screens if it is not under warranty. If you have AppleCare+, the cost to replace the screen through Apple is $99.

This is a great question to discuss with the shop you are thinking of doing the repair. Most of the time the answer is yes, it is worth repairing a MacBook Pro screen if the MacBook Pro is useful to you. The cost of the repair usually decreases with time, so older MacBook Pros will cost less to repair than newer MacBook Pros.

AppleCare+ generally does not cover a cracked screen completely. Rather it covers all but $99 of the screen replacement service. If there is liquid damage involved, then the charge is $299.

I have a macbook pro 13” 2017. The keyboard is messed up and under an apple recall, but when that happened, the display also started to flicker and have colored bands. Took it to apple, and even though it is 1.5 years since I purchased (half a year over their warranty), they would not fix the display for free. The keyboard, as I said was covered.

Of course they said it was a “coincidence” that the two failed simultaneously. No drops or damage. !#^&@@ me off and the store manager wouldn’t budge. Fortunately, I put the purchase on a credit card that offered extended warranty for an extra year, and Visa will pay for it. But still, when this appears to be a problem that others have reported, you would think there would be some consideration on Apple’s part.

I had a 2017 13” MacBook Pro. The keyboard was messed up, replaced twice and started to mess up again. Also, I had horizontal lines that completely distorted the screen. I had to pay to have the screen replaced (about $300 from apple). About a month later when the keyboard started messing up again, and I was getting flickering, I discussed the issues with a customer support SUPERVISOR (don’t bother with the underlings). After much back and forth, he admitted that I had a lemon. I demanded a new MacBook Pro, and they agreed.

So it pays to ##&&% and moan. It’s not fun, but honesty and persistence pays off. There are a lot of problems reported about the 2017 models, and a number of recalls. So far, the new 2019 model is working beautifully. Good luck.

It happened AGAIN (since my last writing) and I insisted that they replace my computer becuase it was a lemon. In NY, there is a lemon law that covers all purchases. First I tried the store where I brought the computer for servicing, and then I climbed the ladder of supervisors until I got one who had the capability to offer a replacement. It wasn’t easy, and they will do everything in their power to counter you. They may even offer to fix it again for no charge (or reduce the charge). I really think that year of mbp, 2017, was a bad year and the machines have multiple recalls (keyboard, hard drive, and now screen). Insist on a new replacement. Good luck.

There have been a number of issues with Apple’s MacBook models over the years. In some cases Apple has service programs where it will fix your MacBook for free, in other cases the Macs have been recalled by Apple due to safety issues.

Certain MacBook Pro models have been banned from flights following Apple’s recall of certain models sold between September 2015 and February 2017. Some of these MacBook Pro models are fitted with batteries that “may overheat and pose a fire safety risk,” according to Apple.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has alerted airlines to the recall. This means that if you are flying to or inside America, you won’t be able to take a recalled MacBook Pro on as carry-on luggage, nor will you be able to check it in as cargo.

Various airlines managed by Total Cargo Expertise, including TUI Group Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Air Italy, and Air Transat, have implemented a complete ban on these laptops, with employees told: “The 15in Apple MacBook Pro laptop, sold between mid-2015 and February 2017 is prohibited on board any of our mandate carriers.”

Laptops that have replaced batteries won’t be impacted, according to a TUI spokesperson who spoke to Bloomberg. We assume that you would need to prove that the battery replacement has taken place.

It’s not only the 15in MacBook Pro that is affected by a battery issue. Apple has also indicated that the battery inside the 13in MacBook Pro can also expand – although this is considered less of a risk than the 15in issue.

The no fly ban relates to Apple’s 20 June 2019 voluntary recall of some 15in MacBook Pro units which contain a battery that may overheat and pose a safety risk, according to the company.

In a press release the company stated that: “Because customer safety is a top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using affected 15-inch MacBook Pro units.”

website) suggests that a component in certain 13in MacBook Pro may fail “causing the built-in battery to expand”. That sounds a bit concerning, but Apple says it is not a safety issue.

If you own a 15in MacBook Pro unit purchased between September 2015 and February 2017 – known as MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) – it may be part of the battery recall. You’ll be able to identify whether it’s included in the recall by the serial number which can be found by clicking on the Apple Logo and choosing About This Mac.

The specifics of the problem are unclear, but Apple’s solution seems to be to replace the logic board. While Apple doesn’t have an official program for this issue, it should replace the logic board for free if its personnel determine that it is affected by the issue. This should be the case for four years from the purchase date – so it could run until 2022.

As of May 2019 Apple has been running a backlight service program for 13in MacBook Pro purchased between October 2016 and February 2018. This includes the MacBook Pro from 2017.

The problem was caused by a flex cable that is too short. MacBook Pro models manufactured after 2018 are unaffected because a longer flex cable was used.

Apple extended the service program, so that it is valid for five years from the original purchase date or three years from the service program’s start date (May 21, 2019), whichever is longer.

The problem was related to the design of the keyboard of these MacBook laptops. The so called Butterfly design meant that dust could get trapped under the keys causing keys to stop working. The problem was that the whole keyboard needed to be replaced to rectify the problem.

After a lot of complaints Apple started a service program in which it would replace affected keyboards free of charge. There is more information about this program on Apple’s

Non Touch Bar models of the 13in MacBook Pro sold between June 2017 and June 2018 could be affected by an issue with the SSD that might cause you to lose valuable data.

Apple has stated that “a limited number of 128GB and 256GB solid-state drives (SSD) used in 13in MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units have an issue that may result in data loss and failure of the drive.”

The issue applies to 13in MacBook Pro units sold between June 2017 and June 2018. Apple has emailed those with affected models – assuming that they were registered with Apple.

Shortly after the 2016 MacBook Pro got into users’ hands, reports of loud crackling and popping noises through the speakers started to appear on community forums. It was initially thought that, the noises only occurred if the user boots into Microsoft Windows using Boot Camp. However, one Macworld reader has commented that:

“I have a 2017 MacBook Pro and I had speakers replaced 2 times due to them popping. And I had not installed Windows, it all happened in MacOS. So it is 100% a hardware issue and not Boot Camps fault.”

Some users even reported that their MacBook Pro speakers were permanently damaged by the noises when Windows was booted, which subsequently meant the speakers no longer worked then they booted back into macOS. The right speaker in particular seems to be affected in this way.

“The crackling noise is noticeable after a few minutes whilst listening to audio files or YouTube type of websites,” claimed one Reddit poster who had his new MacBook Pro replaced and found that the issue remained. He suspects that it’s the drivers. Other posters suspect that it’s a firmware issue.

You could also ensure that headphones are attached via the 3.5mm audio jack before using Boot Camp to boot into Windows, as this will avoid the MacBook Pro’s speakers being used. The crackling/pops will not be heard in the headphones. Notably, users affected by the issue report that simply turning the volume control down has no effect; the loud crackling and pops continue.

A “small percentage” of MacBook Pros sold between February 2011 and December 2013 experienced issues with distorted video and out-of-the-blue system restarts. The problems affected 15in and 17in MacBook Pros from 2011 and 15in Retina MacBook Pros produced from 2012 to early 2013.

2011 MacBook Pro had complained about video issues for years before Apple addressed the issue with a recall. Some MacBook owners even filed a class-action suit against Apple, alleging problems with the AMD graphics chips and the lead-free solder that connects the GPU to the MacBook’s logic board were responsible for video problems and system failures.

In a memo distributed to Apple Stores in June 2018, Apple wrote that it had “identified a specific population of MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports) units requiring both solid state drives and the main logic board to be replaced when either has a functional failure,”

noted in a hands-on review (warning: includes significant bad language!) that some USB-C adapters not only slowed down his 13in non-Touch Bar 2016 MacBook Pro but also appeared to slow or entirely kill the MacBook Pro’s Wi-Fi connection. The adapters worked perfectly with a Dell laptop.

Meanwhile, Mac developer Khaos Tian has not only discovered that some third-party Thunderbolt 3 docks don’t work with the new 2016 MacBook Pro but even

Buying only Apple’s own USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 adapters is the obvious solution. Buying third-party adaptors or docks will probably be cheaper but, as Apple says, only those certified by Apple are guaranteed to work – and there’s still relatively few of those.

Apple might provide a future update to macOS Sierra to include support for non-compatible USB-C/Thunderbolt hardware but knowing Apple like we do – and coupled to the fact they have their own range of adapters – we wouldn’t hold our breath waiting for a fix. To be honest, if you’re affected then we reckon it’s best to bite the bullet and get new Apple-approved adapters.

Reports of failing MacBook Pros have been flooding in since 2013, with many owners of 2011 models with AMD graphics suffering from system crashes and hardware problems that have been described as “critical”. On its support page, Apple revealed it has determined “that a small percentage of MacBook Pro systems may exhibit distorted video, no video or unexpected system restarts”.

The products initially included in the repair program were the 15in and 17in MacBook Pro models manufactured in 2011, and 15in MacBook Pro with Retina models manufactured from Mid 2012 to Early 2013. TheMacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011), MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011) and MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011) and theMacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012) and MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inch, Early 2013). However, with the program only lasting four years kit is now too late to qualify for the repair.

The problem, first emerged in February 2013 and escalated throughout 2014 as more and more owners of the affected models began to experience issues. While playing games, watching HD video or performing another graphics-intensive task, users have witnessed their displays distorting, or sometimes going completely blank. Rebooting the machine temporarily resolves the issue, but it almost always returns.

Eventually, many users found that their MacBook boots to a blue or grey screen. Currently, the only permanent resolution is to get a replacement logic board, but that can prove quite costly without Apple Care. It’s believed that overheating is to blame for the issue.

Some of the readers who’ve been in touch have said that Apple has replaced their 2011 MacBook Pro’s logic board thanks to Apple Care, with some customers even claiming to have had their logic board replaced multiple times.

If your Mac is eligible for repair, you’ll now need to back up your Mac laptop and then bring it to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider. An Apple technician will then run a diagnostic test to verify eligibility, and let you know how long it’ll take to repair.

Note, however, that if there is other damage to your MacBook Pro that “prevents the repair” such as a cracked screen, they’ll charge you for the replacement of that. Aside from that, though, the repair program is completely free (and so it should be!).

This design flaw primarily afflicts the MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 models. Both 13 inch and 15 inch models are affected.A1707 - MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016-17, Touchbar model)

Up until 2015, the MacBook display controller or logic board used to be tucked inside the hinge cover at the bottom of the display. It was part of the “lid”, so the wire connecting to it ran inside the hinge cover and was never moved or disturbed.

The flex/ribbon contains multiple cables. Usually the backlight cable gives way first, causing various backlight related faults. The damage progresses in stages:When the cable hasn’t broken but just some connection lines are worn off, it manifests as the stage light effect.

Step 2: Quietly introduce a “fix” in the subsequent model. Apple discreetly increased the length of the flex cable in 2018 model MacBooks. Just by ~2mm. This would reduce the stress on the cable, thereby reducing chances of damage. Thus Apple tried fixing an issue they hadn’t acknowledged in the first place. Note: Jury is still out on whether this fix solves the problem or just delays the eventual failure. In our experience at Fixxo, 2018-19 models continue to face flex cable issues, however not in as large numbers.

Step 3: Introduce a replacement program. Finally, Apple couldn’t ignore the public backlash anymore and introduced a free display replacement program.

But wait ..  this program is valid onlyfor “13-inch MacBook Pro 2016 model”, however it is amply clear the design flaw actually impacts both 13-inch and 15-inch variants of 2016 as well as 2017 models. Well..

If yours is a 13-inch MacBook Pro 2016 model, and the purchase date is between October 2016 and February 2018, you’re eligible for Apple"s free display replacement program. Congratulations! Take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider. There are a number of fake AASPs around, careful!.

If your MacBook isn’t eligible for the program, you’ll unfortunately need to get a paid display replacement. It isn’t cheap. A reputed non-Apple vendor may be your best bet.

Well, the cable is integrated into the screen, so it cannot be swapped out. So, the standard resolution offered is to replace the entire display panel.

Original Apple Backlight films and diffusers can be used keeping the screen bright white. Replacement screen assemblies usually have a yellower hue to them.

No Issues with ALS sensor. The ambient light sensor is used to turn the keyboard backlight on. If this sensor is missing as it quite often is from replacement screen assemblies the keyboard backlight will never turn on automatically.

It is good to note that there is not really such a thing as a MacBook “repair”. Instead, it is typically parts replacement. For example, if your chassis is dented on the side, they will not pull out the dent to “repair” it. Rather, your MacBook would need an entire chassis replacement. If your logic board has a liquid spill, Apple will not repair your logic board, but simply replace it.

There is no easy response regarding how much it will cost to repair an Apple MacBook, due to there being so many variations (such as model and year). Typically you can expect the smallest repair/replacement to be as low as $29, all the way up to as expensive as $849+.

Apple quotes repairs based on a series of tiers regarding damage and cost. For example, if you have a 13-inch MacBook Air and your child accidentally spills a glass of water on it, this would require a Tier 4 repair.

Tier 4 repairs can cost upwards of $750 or more. This is astronomical and almost 60% of the cost of a new MacBook Air. Apple is aware of this, and they train their employees to suggest forgoing a repair. Instead, they suggest purchasing a new device, while they recycle your broken MacBook free of cost.

Not all broken MacBooks occur because of an accident. Sometimes technology simply gets old. Years of use put a strain on a technological device, and natural wear and tear occur.

When Apple revealed the 2021 14-inch MacBook Pro, it showed that it had reversed course on many design decisions made since 2016. For example, the updated MacBook Pro has no Touch Bar, has multiple port types, and can be charged via a MagSafe connector.

The transition to Apple Silicon was a year in when the first version of this notebook was announced. The transition began with the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air in late 2020, but they didn"t see any significant design alterations.

That changed with the 14-inch MacBook Pro. The number of design changes, feature additions, and performance overhauls was almost too good to be true. This model specifically takes a new place in the lineup with near feature parity with the larger 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple"s custom silicon design is industry-leading with performance and efficiency that is difficult for competitors to match, and the MacBook Pros showcase that. Despite a slim form factor and minimal cooling mechanisms, these laptops can outperform many of the high-end laptops on the market.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro is a size class that sits comfortably between the 13-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro. The edge-to-edge display, 0.61-inch thick chassis, and 3.5-pound weight make for a small yet powerful machine.

At first glance, this laptop is obviously a MacBook Pro with an aluminum body, giant trackpad, and slim enclosure. However, the keyboard is surrounded by a black casing, the display is notched, and there are large feet underneath.

Apple pushed the display to the edge, so there is no longer a MacBook Pro logo underneath, nor is there space for a webcam in the bezel. So, rather than have a uniform, and thick, bezel around the display, Apple went with a notch design. This controversial design enables more screen real estate in the same-sized casing by having a small cutout around the camera module.

The iPhone X pioneered the notch design so it could move forward into an edge-to-edge display while housing a complex True Depth system for Face ID. However, you won"t find Face ID in the latest MacBook Pros due to the extreme thinness of the display lid.

The internal design has been rearranged to enable 50% more airflow compared to the 13-inch model, even at low fan speeds. Active cooling is necessary for the high-end processor but won"t always be enabled.

Apple says that many everyday tasks will not cause the fans to spin up, thanks to the efficiency of the M2 Pro and M2 Max. Between the fans, aluminum chassis, and raised bottom due to larger feet, the 14-inch MacBook Pro should stay relatively cool during use.

The Liquid Retina XDR Display combines all of Apple"s latest display technologies in one package. It houses a mini-LED backlight, high mobility oxide TFT for 120Hz refresh, and a 1,600 nit peak brightness HDR LCD panel.

The 120Hz ProMotion display enables a variable refresh rate that adjusts to whatever content is on the screen. Users who need a fixed refresh rate for video editing can also set their preferred refresh rate.

All of these display features first appeared in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Apple has been long-rumored to implement mini-LED across its entire lineup, and now that it has debuted in three products, expect it to show up in more large-sized displays.

While the 14-inch MacBook Pro is an impressive machine, it owes most of its capabilities to the custom Apple Silicon inside. Customers can choose between the M2 Pro and M2 Max processors when configuring their new MacBook, and each offer significant improvements over the equivalent Intel processor or previous generation M-series chip.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max versions of this MacBook Pro are no longer sold new but can be found at a discount at select retailers. They will still offer great advantages over their Intel equivalents but are a generation behind Apple"s current models.

The introduction of the original M1 processor proved how far Apple could take its consumer-grade machines with custom ARM similar to that used in the iPhone. The second generation of its M-series chips takes this even further with performance improvements across the board.

Each of these processors combines the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine into a single System on a Chip. Thanks to this design, everything happens on the same chip using a unified memory, making every process faster and more efficient.

The M2 Pro supports up to 32GB of RAM and 200GB/s memory bandwidth. This is essentially like stacking two M2 processors on top of each other with even more performance gains.

Apple rates the GPU at 30 percent faster than the one in the M1 Pro, and benchmarks confirm that. That means rendering video games will also be improved, as Apple shows with footage of "Resident Evil Village."

According to Apple, the MacBook Pro with M2 Pro is able to process images in Adobe Photoshop up to 40 percent faster than with M1 Pro and as much as 80 percent faster than MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i9 processor.

If the M2 Pro is like two M2 chips stacked on each other, the M2 Max is double that. It has a 10-core CPU with up to 96GB of RAM and 400GB/s memory bandwidth.

Customers can configure the M2 Max with a 30-core or 38-core GPU and up to 96GB of RAM. Maxing out this processor adds $700 to the base price of the laptop, costing another $800 for the maximum RAM.

Thanks to the efficiency of custom Apple Silicon, the battery life of the 14-inch MacBook Pro extends into all-day use. While intense tasks will drain the battery faster, general use can last 12 hours. And thanks to the 120Hz variable refresh, video playback can last up to 18 hours.

Apple doesn"t include the power adapter needed for fast charging with the base model. Customers can upgrade the included power brick at checkout or get the 96W adapter by default when buying the 10-core M1 Pro or any M1 Max. 140W fast charging is only possible with the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple"s design philosophy under Jony Ive seemed to be minimalist for the sake of minimalism. As a result, with each update, Apple removed ports, changed the keyboard, and kept taking away in the name of simplicity. However, Apple has taken a step back to return some high-demand ports for pros.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro has a MagSafe connector, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SD card slot, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack. Previous MacBook Pros had only two or four Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack, which is a return to convenience.

As mentioned previously, the return of MagSafe enables 140W fast charging through Apple"s proprietary connector. Of course, this shouldn"t be confused with the iPhone MagSafe system, which uses magnets for accessories and charging.

You can"t discuss a MacBook Pro revision without talking about the keyboard. After years of issues with a butterfly keyboard, Apple shifted back to scissor switches in 2019. The 14-inch MacBook Pro benefits from the latest Magic Keyboard with mechanical scissor switches that are just as clicky and durable as older Mac keyboards.

Apple went with black keys for the new MacBook Pros surrounded by a black frame. Thanks to the form-fitting design, the new frame is made to emphasize the backlit keys.

The lack of physical function keys frustrated many pro users since accessing these keys was now hidden behind a software interface, including the much-needed escape key. Apple gave pros the escape key back in a later update but stopped paying any attention to the Touch Bar.

After letting the Touch Bar go without any feature additions or upgrades for years, Apple has finally removed it entirely. In its place is a full-sized set of function keys — a first for MacBooks.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro was updated in 2023 with the M2 Pro and M2 Max processors. The external design didn"t change, but the new internals provides plenty of additional functionality to the compact laptop.

The performance boost provided by these new chipsets more than justifies an upgrade for pro users seeking to pull out every drop of power these laptops have to offer. For the more casual pro user or otherwise, the upgrade will feel a little more muted.

Anyone who wasn"t hitting the upper limit of M1 Pro or M1 Max won"t need to consider an upgrade. Those still running Intel machines or looking for a new Mac should consider the 2023 options but may find discounted 2021 options to be a better value. The "tragedy" of the slower SSD speeds on the base model also aren"t ideal.

Unlike Intel versions of the MacBook, there isn"t a performance curve based on chassis size, although with some caveats. Customers will be able to configure the same processors, RAM, and storage in both versions of the MacBook Pro, but the 16-inch MacBook Pro does have some benefits, thanks to its size.

The higher price, new design, and several new features set the 14-inch MacBook Pro apart from the M1-based 13-inch MacBook Pro. We believe the "true" pro laptop starts with the new size class despite both being pro in name.

We tested the M1 Max processor in Geekbench 5, and it scored similarly to the M1 Pro thanks to identical 10-core CPUs. The true benefit of the M1 Max is the additional GPU cores and higher memory bandwidth.

However, benchmark scores can"t capture all of the benefits of Apple"s integrated processors. One significant advantage for video producers is the Media Engine on both the M1 Pro and M1 Max.

The Media Engine accelerates encode and decode processes for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW formats. This effect is doubled on the M1 Max thanks to more encode engines and ProRes engines.

Pro video producers using a Mac Pro would have to purchase Apple"s $2,000 Afterburner card to accomplish similar video processing performance. It is now included on the custom Apple processors.

Geekbench Compute GPU tests didn"t disappoint either, as the M1 Max model scored 59118 thanks to the 32-core GPU. The M1 Pro model with 16-core GPU scored 36390.

We conducted a real-world test between the Mac Pro with AMD Radeon Pro 580X and the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max. A 54 minute 4K video took 17 minutes to export on the M1 Max versus one hour and six minutes on the Mac Pro.

Apple"s return to complex port configurations isn"t without its imperfections. Despite being the smaller laptop, Apple included MagSafe, HDMI, and SDXC ports. One could argue that this port configuration isn"t necessary for something more portable than the massive 16-inch model.

The chassis is still too thin for Ethernet, but inexplicably Apple also limited the type of WiFi included in the new MacBook Pros. Rather than opting for the latest and greatest WiFi 6e, Apple included WiFi 6. Most users won"t notice this distinction, but it is a curious lack of future-proofing.

Apple replaced the Touch Bar with a row of full-sized function keys — a move we"re not entirely happy with. We liked the Touch Bar and believe Apple could have provided a more versatile option than a row of static keys.

Alongside the amazing Liquid Retina XDR Display, Apple included a new 1080p webcam and six-speaker sound system. While there is a notch in the display, it only houses the webcam and proximity sensor rather than a full Face ID array.

The high-fidelity six-speaker sound system includes support for Dolby Atmos. The speakers can"t compete with the larger 16-inch model but still produce better sound than its predecessors.

The size and weight of the 14-inch MacBook Pro may be enough to deter some users. As the "portable" option below the 16-inch MacBook Pro, it is still quite large compared to the 13-inch model it replaces.

Ultimately, any purchase is a trade-off between size, weight, and performance. Customers who choose this machine will get a Mac Pro they can take into a cafe that doesn"t weigh 40 pounds.

Apple is rumored to be replacing the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the 14-inch body and an M2 processor with lesser features. This would bring the low-end MacBook Pro up to date with modern design while keeping the price close to the current entry model.

It would lack features like ProMotion and mini-LED backlighting to keep costs down. Also, Apple may opt for a different port arrangement, like two Thunderbolt 4 ports versus three.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro lies in a redundant place in Apple"s lineup and is the only Mac that still houses a Touch Bar. Apple didn"t update the model when it introduced the M2 processor, but it could reveal a new middle-tier option in the future.

The above two MacBook Pro A1708 were manufactured in 2017. Both MacBooks use the same background picture and set the brightness to maximum. The screen on the right-hand side is an Apple original screen; the one on the left-hand side is a third-party screen purchased online. You can tell the differences straightforward by the quality of the images. Here we discuss the technical details.

A MacBook screen consists of two major components, an LCD panel and a strip of LED lights called backlights. The LCD panel creates the image. The LED lights illuminate the image from behind the LCD panel. There are significant differences between an original Apple screen and a third-party screen as outlined here:

2. Backlight brightness. Even after eight years, Apple’s high-quality LEDs provide brighter lights and remain near the same brightness level. Low-quality LEDs not only produce bluish light but also have brightness degradation problems. The brightness of some third-party screens may only maintain half of the original brightness level after a year of use.

3. Photo sharpness. The Apple original screen produces a much sharper image thanks to the high quality of the LCD panel, as you can see on the right-hand side of the above photo.

The MacBook Pro is a line of Mac laptops made by Apple Inc. Introduced in January 2006, it is the higher-end lineup in the MacBook family, sitting above the consumer-focused MacBook Air. It is currently sold with 13-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch screens, all using Apple silicon M-series chips.

The original MacBook Pro used the design of the PowerBook G4, but replaced the PowerPC G4 chips with Intel Core processors, added a webcam, and introduced the MagSafe power connector. The 15-inch model was introduced in January 2006; the 17-inch model in April. Later revisions added Intel Core 2 Duo processors and LED-backlit displays.

The unibody model debuted in October 2008 in 13- and 15-inch variants, with a 17-inch variant added in January 2009. Called the "unibody" model because its case was machined from a single piece of aluminum, it had a thinner flush display, a redesigned trackpad whose entire surface consisted of a single clickable button, and a redesigned keyboard. Updates brought Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduced Intel"s Thunderbolt.

The Retina MacBook Pro was released in 2012: the 15-inch in June, a 13-inch model in October. It is thinner than its predecessor, made solid-state storage (SSD) standard, added HDMI, and included a high-resolution Retina display. It eliminated Ethernet and FireWire ports and the optical drive.

The Touch Bar MacBook Pro, released in October 2016, adopted USB-C for all data ports and power and included a shallower "butterfly"-mechanism keyboard. On all but the base model, the function keys were replaced with a touchscreen strip called the Touch Bar with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button.

A November 2019 revision to the Touch Bar MacBook Pro introduced the Magic Keyboard, which uses a scissor-switch mechanism. The initial 16-inch model with a screen set in narrower bezels was followed by a 13-inch model in May 2020. This revision also modified the Touch Bar, as users were complaining about the ESC key disappearing and not being able to exit a computer window.

Another revision to the Touch Bar MacBook Pro was released in November 2020; it was the first MacBook Pro to feature an Apple-designed system on a chip, the Apple M1.

The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros were released in October 2021. Powered by either M1 Pro or M1 Max chips, they are the first to be available only with an Apple silicon system on a chip. These models re-introduced MagSafe, function keys, and some other elements that had been removed from the Touch Bar MacBook Pro.

Alongside the redesigned M2 MacBook Air, Apple refreshed the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the Apple M2 chip. The model features the same chassis, albeit with changes to the system audio: speakers compatible with Spatial Audio and a headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones.

The original MacBook Pro used the design of the PowerBook G4, but replaced the PowerPC G4 chips with Intel Core processors,iSight camera, and introduced the MagSafe power connector. The optical drive was shrunk to fit into the slimmer MacBook Pro; it runs slower than the optical drive in the PowerBook G4 and cannot write to dual-layer DVDs.Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and LED-backlit displays, and 17-inch did in 2008.Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT video cards"Penryn" cores while adding multi-touch capabilities to the trackpad.

Both the original 15- and 17-inch model MacBook Pro computers come with ExpressCard/34 slots, which replace the PC Card slots found in the PowerBook G4. Initial first-generation 15-inch models retain the two USB 2.0 ports and a FireWire 400 port but drop the FireWire 800,802.11a/b/g.802.11nBluetooth 2.1.

Models of the MacBook Pro built from 2007 to early 2008 (15") / late 2008 (17") using the Nvidia 8600M GT chip reportedly exhibited failures in which the GPU die would detach from the chip carrier, or the chip would detach from the logic board.
