The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUVmodel year,Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep"s first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.
The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car"s styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.
Jeep debuted the production version of the Compass at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January. The first Compass was assembled on 30 May 2006, in Belvidere, Illinois, where the Dodge Neon was produced.
The Compass did not carry the "Trail Rated" badge found on other SUVs in the Jeep family for the 2007-2010 model years, but received the "Trail Rated" badge for the 2011 model year. The Compass targets first-time Jeep buyers and those who drive primarily on paved roads.
For 2011, Jeep redesigned the Compass to more closely resemble the Grand Cherokee, while keeping its own identity. The 2011 Jeep Compass also receives a revised suspension for better handling, a revised interior with more standard equipment, and more option packages including a Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package which includes a continuously variable transmission fitted with a low-range setting, all-terrain tires inside 17-inch aluminum wheels, skid plates, a four-wheel-drive system, and an increase ground clearance of a full inch.

The Compass uses a 172 hp (128 kW) 2.4 L I4 gasoline engine. The 2.0 L World engine is available on the 4X2 Sport model with 158 hp (118 kW). A 2.0 L l-R4 TDi 103 kW (138 hp; 140 PS) Volkswagen-designed diesel engine was available for the European and Australian markets, replaced in 2011 by the 2.2 L Mercedes-Benz OM651.
The Compass also features two electronically controlled four-wheel drive systems. Stepping into the Grand Cherokee"s cabin provides either a sense of ruggedness or luxury depending on the model. The contoured dashboard houses an infotainment touchscreen atop chunky, redundant buttons and controls, and a 7.0-inch driver-facing LCD display is flanked by analog gauges. Jeep designers use soft-touch materials and leather where it counts—armrests, upper door panels, the dashboard—but cheaper hard plastic persists elsewhere.
Jeep"s excellent infotainment system—called Uconnect—is among our favorites for its ease of use and snappy response times. The result of this new state-of-the-art technology is reduced weight of nearly 17 lbs., and a reduction of low-speed system drag torque by 50 percent, which improves fuel savings. The ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist feature remains a highlight in the new 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Using ultrasonic parking sensors on the bumper the system will find and guide the customer into an available parking space when the driver initiates the parking maneuver. The parking guidance system controls the steering angle automatically and the driver controls the gear position, brake, and accelerator. Parallel parking is possible on either side of the car. During perpendicular parking, the vehicle is backed into the space. Additionally, a new side-distance warning feature now adds greater awareness to drivers of side objects while the vehicle is at low speed and in a parallel parking sequence.
Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus is significant for its ability to bring the vehicle to a complete stop without driver intervention, in certain conditions. Radar and video sensors identify the locations of vehicles traveling ahead of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The sensors also help ensure the vehicles are separated by a gap determined by the driver. If the gap is dramatically breached, the ESC system can aggressively deploy the vehicle’s brakes to affect a full stop, even if the driver never touches the brake pedal. To resume travel, the driver need only press a button on the steering wheel or tap the accelerator pedal.
Lane Departure Warning-Plus uses a camera-based vision sensor to establish the Jeep Cherokee’s position on the road. If an unintentional lane drift occurs, determined by trajectory change and the absence of turn-signal activation, the system will deliver a visual warning and a haptic warning – the subtle introduction of torque from the electric power steering (EPS) system. If the driver unintentionally drifts too far, the system provides a secondary visual warning.
