MultiViu Sports is not only a new generation of displays for the motorcycle world,” says Patric Zimmermann, “it opens up new opportunities for the motorcycle industry. By having a joint back end and a front end that can be customized to a high degree, automotive display technology can be made available to motorcycles in a cost-efficient manner, even with small production runs.” The MultiViu Sports platform also shortens the time to market for manufacturers. Displays can go into production more quickly.
The developers at Continental have not only designed the platform to permit customization of image content. Suppliers can also integrate external services such as weather information or music streaming in cooperation with manufacturers. An app with an open design connects the rider’s smartphone with the motorcycle via Bluetooth Low Energy, taking customization another step further. Continental has also designed the platform to be ready for future technologies and types of user behavior. For example, forthcoming versions of the MultiViu Sports display will offer touchscreen functionality. A video of the display can be seen on the Continental Automotive YouTube channel.

Based in Austria, KTM is Europe"s largest manufacturer of motorsports vehicles. The company focuses on sport-oriented motorcycles, underscoring its “READY TO RACE” philosophy. In short, KTM’s mission is to produce motorcycles with exacting standards of excellence.
“We are driven by constant innovation, week after week, race after race,” says Philipp Habsburg, head of research and development at KTM. “Furthermore, if we see that an innovation works in our racing motorcycles, we quickly introduce it into our production bikes — from our high-performing naked bikes to our children’s motocross lines. Everything we make is based on product excellence and the engineering behind it.”
Unlike many other manufacturers, KTM engineers everything in-house. That includes the engine, chassis, suspension elements and lots of other parts. Habsburg says that kind of control helps the company optimize every part of the bike, maximizing performance.
The innovation machine at KTM stays revved all the time, says company designer Olaf Seger. “Every model that we release integrates the best of our engineering when we release it. But we never feel we’ve crossed the finish line. Our teams are continuing to dream up the next round of improvements all the time.”
Take the 2013 KTM 690 DUKE. It was the most cutting-edge series production single-cylinder bike of that time. It featured a precision chassis with a wealth of outstanding components that made every ride on the 690 DUKE unforgettable.
The new KTM 690 DUKE features an improved motor and a multitude of highly modern driver assistance systems as well as technical features like TFT display, ride by wire and supermoto mode – ensuring maximum fun during your ride.
That’s all good news for KTM, especially since the company uses Creo and is avoiding many of the growing pains other product developers encounter. “With Creo’s flexible modeling approach, everyone can take existing designs and make modifications to improve performance,” says Olaf Seger. “New designers can leverage existing parts, even when the original designer is unavailable.”
One of KTM’s secrets to engineering success is its approach to design technology. It is one of the only developers that has standardized on one CAD system for both engine and chassis design. Habsburg says that having the complete 3D model in one format means the teams can work together to optimize their results.
The KTM 690 DUKE is full of those solutions: top-notch performance, minimal internal friction, high fuel economy (61mpg, 26Km/l), 73hp, and 74 NM of torque. The bike is light too, with a weight of only 327.4 pounds (148.5kg). For the riders, that means sharp handling and punchy performance.
Beyond design and simulation, the KTM team uses several other PTC products across its whole product development process to encourage teamwork, concurrent engineering, and sharing of designs. Windchill manages the processes, concurrent engineering, and workflow across design and engineering. Non-CAD users like manufacturing, marketing, and QA can view models and drawings instantly with Creo visualization capabilities.
“Design and engineering at KTM are better because of PTC and their products,” says Habsburg. “The PTC technology has grown right with us to support our needs, helping us reduce time-to-market by 15% in this year’s model range alone.”

MTC (MOTORCYCLE TRACTION CONTROL): The MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control) lean-angle sensitive traction control system reacts immediately if the rotational speed of the rear wheel is disproportionate to the riding situation. In a matter of milliseconds, MTC reduces the engine output with an extremely smooth, barely perceptible intervention at the throttle valves, until the system has reduced slippage to optimum proportions for the selected ride mode and current angle of lean. Depending on the selected riding mode, MTC traction control allows different levels of traction slip at the rear wheel. In "Street mode" somewhat more than in "Rain mode", while slight power slides are allowed when exiting curves in "Sport mode". All this means that the rider can concentrate on the run of the road and other road users - the guarantee for maximum performance and ultimate riding pleasure, but also a decisive contribution to active safety. For particularly ambitious riders, who feel like enjoying the breathtaking propulsion of the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT without any electronic assistance, the traction control can also be switched off.
PERFORMANCE MODE: The optional PERFORMANCE MODE transforms the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT from a beastly tourer to an all-out apex slaying missile by allowing riders to tailor the level of intervention from the traction control and throttle response, turn off anti-wheelie and dial in launch control.
MOTOR SLIP REGULATION (MSR): The optionally available MSR (Motor Slip Regulation) works in the opposite direction of the MTC. If, due to quick downshifts or abrupt throttle chopping, the engine drag torque is too high, the ride by wire opens the throttle exactly as much as is needed to prevent the rear wheel from drifting. Safety first, but pleasure that comes with it is always a very close second at KTM.
LED CORNERING LIGHTS: The KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT has LED cornering lights integrated into its fuel tank. On the left and right side of the fuel tank, the cornering lights consist of three LED segments, using the lean angle sensor of the MSC system. Depending on the lean angle, the KTM cornering light can use up to all three segments, always giving the rider the perfect view of where he is going. Integrated in the cornering lights are the LED indicators, for a unique and exclusive look. Well deserved in a bike like this.
TPMS (TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM): As its name implies, the TPMS monitors tire pressure, and gives you a view of current pressures in the TFT display. In the event of sudden loss of pressure, for example due to tire damage, a warning will alert the rider on the dash.
CRUISE CONTROL: Long motorway journeys are made even easier with the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT’s standard cruise control. Switches on the left side of the handlebar and a display in the TFT dashboard allow the rider to intuitively set and change the requested speed, so you’ll arrive at the fun bits with energy to spare.
TURN-BY-TURN PLUS: You asked for it - here it is. For the first time in KTM history, the 1290 SUPER DUKE GT will offer improved interaction with navigation directly via the TFT dash. TBT+ will allow riders GPS access while on the fly, allowing up to 10 favorited destinations, keep track of the last 10 set destinations, and even skip a waypoint on your planned route.

ENGINE: The KTM 390 DUKE engine not only delivers arm-wrenching torque and hair-raising acceleration, but also good manners in everyday use, all with outstanding fuel economy. Thanks to the ingenious intake design and the meticulous fuel injection system, the KTM 390 DUKE is ready and waiting to tear-up the streets and the circuits alike.
RIDE-BY-WIRE: It"s the guarantee of a smooth throttle response, more than simply the absence of a throttle cable. The KTM 390 DUKE"s ride-by-wire ensures perfect delivery of the readily available and gut-wrenching torque. It also electronically translates the throttle commands of the rider into throttle valve positions, perfectly suited to the riding conditions, making this the perfect crossover bike for both road and circuit riding.
CYLINDER HEAD: Just like the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R, the four valves in the cylinder head of the KTM 390 DUKE are actuated by two overhead camshafts and ultra-hard, carbon coated cam followers. The result is an ultra-reliable, long-lasting engine that produces next-level power.
INJECTION: The intricate engine design, state-of-the-art injection electronics and close-ratio, 6-speed transmission not only help the KTM 390 DUKE to achieve white-knuckle performance, but also extremely low fuel consumption. At the same time, thanks to the regulated catalytic converter, it produces minimal emissions, even when riding at full throttle.
A2 LICENSE: The KTM 390 DUKE matches all the A2 driver´s license requirements and thanks to its high power-to-weight ratio, it’s one of the most dynamic options out there for new riders.
EXHAUST: The KTM 390 DUKE’s lightweight and precision-crafted exhaust system comprises of a side exhaust, link pipe and silencer. The three-chamber silencer has been positioned close to the bike’s overall center of gravity, improving balance and handling, whilst also delivering smooth, instant and beast-like power. This new library is a standalone library that contains the TFT driver as well as the graphics functions and fonts that were in the GFX library. This library has significant performance improvements when used with an UNO (or ATmega328 based Arduino) and MEGA.
Examples are included with the library, including graphics test programs. The example sketch TFT_Rainbow_one shows different ways of using the font support functions. This library now supports the "print" library so the formatting features of the "print" library can be used, for example to print to the TFT in Hexadecimal, for example:
To use the F_AS_T performance option the ILI9341 based display must be connected to an MEGA as follows:MEGA +5V to display pin 1 (VCC) and pin 8 (LED) UNO 0V (GND) to display pin 2 (GND)

You’ve likely heard the old saying, “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.” Well, the 2020 KTM 1290 Super Duke R is somewhat akin to bringing a howitzer to a playground skirmish. It’s big, it’s brash and it is completely over the top. But in a good way. KTM transports demo bikes to dealerships across the country throughout the summer so riders can sample their products. There was a gap in the schedule, so they invited some media to check out their current lineup, including what has been dubbed “The Beast 3.0.” For a penny under $20,000, you can get into an Austrian hyper-naked that’s even more menacing than before. In a rare bit of good news for a change in 2020, every aspect of the third-generation Super Duke R has been updated for this year. Last revised in 2017, KTM’s flagship naked bike gets an updated engine, chassis, electronics and standard equipment which add value and make it easier to ride.
The 2020 model sees the single-sided swingarm extended and repositioned closer to the sprocket. Lighter 48 mm front forks also get adjustable rebound and compression, in addition to adjustable pre-load for the first time. The newly developed rear shocks also get separate oil and gas reservoirs in a package that’s lighter and more compact. The manual pre-load dial doesn’t require tools to adjust so can quickly be done mid-ride or in between lapping sessions at the track. Despite its imposing stature and capability, the SDR felt stable and planted in turns. The Bridgestone S22 tires were developed specifically for the KTM. I didn’t get to a point where I was testing their grip, but a host of technology is included to keep things from going sideways.
Behind the new LED headlight and daytime running lights is a multifunctional glare and scratch resistant 5-inch TFT display with paddles on the side for quickly switching modes. In addition to a speedometer and tach, the screen features a low fuel level warning and gear selection display, as well as information on the level of techno-nanny intrusion. KTM MY RIDE comes as standard equipment, which offers smartphone and audio player integration.

KTM MY RIDE: Taking Motorcycle Connectivity Places | KTM’s rider-friendly smartphone integration now adds on-screen navigation feature powered by dedicated KTM MY RIDE app.
KTM’s smartphone connectivity platform, KTM MY RIDE, is available on a large number of KTM street bikes, with the Phone and Music functions and turn-by-turn navigation and route planning, powered by a dedicated app.
Living in a connected world, KTM began introducing the possibility for users to connect their smartphones with the motorcycle in 2017. These features have been carefully designed to be intuitive to use and add to riding enjoyment, rather than distract from the road.
KTM MY RIDE with Music and Phone comes equipped for activation on the KTM 390 Duke, KTM 1290 Super Duke R, KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and KTM 1290 Super Adventure R models.
With a paired Bluetooth helmet headset, this connected function allows a KTM MY RIDE-equipped bike to take control of the smartphone’s music player to listen to while riding. Using the left handlebar-mounted menu switch, the rider can toggle between tracks on a playlist or music archive and control the volume, with the information of the track displayed on the bike’s TFT screen.
Sometimes on a long ride it is important not to miss a call. With the ease of pairing a smartphone to the bike with KTM MY RIDE, this function allows the rider to see the identification of incoming calls on the TFT display and, using the menu switch, accept or decline the call. As a safety measure, accessing the phone’s address book and making outgoing calls is not possible.
New for 2018, turn-by-turn navigation has been introduced for the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S & R, which comes as a standard feature on the bikes. Paired with the new KTM MY RIDE app (available for Android $8.99 and iOS, $7.99), visual guidance is transmitted via Bluetooth to the TFT display to show the pre-planned destination.
To save on mobile data use, maps can be downloaded for offline use; this also helps to create and save pre-planned routes. As KTM knows its Adventure riders like to stray from the beaten path, up to 128 waypoints can be added to a route when planning in order to create truly unique rides.
KTM MY RIDE Navigation is not only exclusive to those with 2018 machines as owners of 2017 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S & R can also benefit by having the cost-free software upgrade installed and activated at an official KTM dealer.
