The LG G7 ThinQ, commonly referred to as just LG G7,Android smartphone developed by LG Electronics as part of the LG G series. It was officially announced on May 2, 2018, after about a week of official leaks by LG. It is the second product from LG that uses the ThinQ branding.LG G6.

The LG G7 ThinQ utilizes a metal chassis with a glass backing, and is IP68-rated for water and dust-resistance. It is available in black, blue, rose and silver-color finishes. The G7 features a 1440p FullVision IPS LCD display, with a diagonal size of 6.1 inches. The display uses a 19:9 aspect ratio that is taller than the 18:9 displays used by the majority of smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S9. The display is capable of

a maximum output of 1000 nits, with the help of an additional white sub-pixel in the matrix. The display is HDR10-capable, supporting high dynamic range playback of YouTube and Netflix content. The G7 was also designed with slim bezels and a notch, similar to the iPhone X, which LG calls a "second screen." Unlike Apple"s notch, the notch can be blacked out on the G7.

There is a button on the side of the phone similar to Samsung"s Bixby button; while it cannot be remapped, it launches Google Assistant when held, rather than a different A.I. Double tapping the button launches Google Lens.

MobileSyrup noted some regressions over the G7 ThinQ due to the differences in hardware, especially in regards to battery life (such as the SoC downgrade resulting in a lack of Quick Charge 4+ support, and the G7 line"s use of LCD over OLED as affecting its efficiency), but that the G7 One was "mostly fluid" and retained much of the ThinQ"s hardware features (such as its audio support) whilst excluding LG"s often-criticized user experience.OnePlus 6T, but it was argued that although the 6T had a Snapdragon 845, a larger battery and an OLED display, the G7 One did have a sharper display with HDR support, a headphone jack with a DAC, and official IP certification for waterproofing.

The screen of the LG G7 ThinQ has been among one of the most marketed features. The phone distinguishes itself from other devices as it’s one of the rare phones with an RGBW screen. The panel manufactured by LG promises great improvements in terms of power consumption, such as 35% better efficiency thanks to improved light transmissivity enabled by the new white sub-pixel.

In terms of display colour management, the G7 doesn’t feature Android 8.1’s wide display gamut framework functionality. Instead LG opts for the usual colour profiles within the display settings.

As always, we thank X-Rite and SpecraCal, as measurements are performed with an X-Rite i1Pro 2 spectrophotometer, with the exception of black levels which are measured with an i1Display Pro colorimeter. Data is collected and examined using SpectraCal"s CalMAN software.

On the default profile, the phone’s colour temperature is a horrendous 9000K. There’s very little point in using this as any kind of accurate baseline for measurements as it’s just way off the charts in terms off (in)accuracy.

Even in this “best case” setting the accuracy is abominable, as the colour temperature is still way off. While this can be “ok” for most users, what really handicaps the G7 even more is that it’s targeting a really high gamma of >2.5. The accepted industry standard is a gamma of 2.2, and any higher target is meant for speciality professional displays or cinemas. The result is that content on the G7 seems darker than on other phones, and adds to the inaccuracy of its colours.

Where the G7 literally shines though is in its auto-brightness mode. Here the screen boosts up to nearly 1000 nits in bright environmental conditions. In the past this boost was only momentary for LG phones, a particular problem which Matt had covered in the G5 review. The G7 fares a lot better here and this maximum boost brightness is seemingly maintained indefinitely. This makes the G7 the by far brightest smartphone released to date and its outdoors usage is outstanding.

Overall the G7 is a massive disappointment when it comes to colour accuracy as it very much singles itself out as the worst calibrated display in recent memory. This has been a pervasive issue for LG and its phones for a long time now, and it seems the company has no interest in changing it. In the past when we’ve brought this up with them, the rationale was that most users prefer the “punchier” colours.

While this could be somewhat excused in the past, the fact that LG promoted the display settings openly as they did just seems overall misleading to potential consumers as it gives the expectation that there would be an “accurate” setting among all those options, as after all, that’s what has been the status quo on Samsung phones for well over 8 generations now, and more recently that’s now also the behaviour of most other flagships from other vendors.

Display viewing angles, contrast, and brightness are otherwise very solid for the G7 – and were it not for the abysmal colour calibration, this might have been one of the best LCD displays released to date.

The G7 posts some outstanding figures here as we’re seeing the single best luminance efficiency of any recently or previously measured devices Overall we see the G7 measuring 36% more efficient than the G6, which is very much almost spot on with the 35% that LG advertised for the phone. This is also a much better figure that what we’ve measured on the Huawei P20, which also promised an efficiency boost through its RGBW panel, but which never materialised.

There’s however a big caveat in terms of power efficiency of the phone / display. While the luminance power is extremely good, the overall total device power isn’t where it"s expected to be at. The G7 showcased a very large total device minimum brightness power of 563mW which is significantly higher than the G6’s 347mW. Other phones also vary between 300-400mW so this really eats into the device’s efficiency. This regression in minimum power will still skew the overall efficiency for the G7 well into commonly used brightness levels – for example at 200nits, the G7 is actually less power efficient than the G6, measuring at 830mW vs 717mW.

As to what to attribute this power regression to, I don’t know for sure without doing detailed teardown and rail power measurement on the phone. It’s possible the screen has a much less efficient DDIC as it has to drive the more complex algorithms for the RGBW panel, or it could also be some other non-display related component.

It’s only when pushing the brightness a lot higher when the G7 really pulls ahead of any other device. At 500 nits the luminance power is only 1.34W, and at the maximum 1000nits it’s still only using 2W which is way ahead of any other display panel at similar luminosity levels.

Overall what this means for the phone’s battery life is that the lower the daily brightness level you use, the worse off the G7 battery life will seem, and conversely, the brighter you drive your display in usage, the better will the G7 perform when compared to other devices.

Instead of waiting until you happen upon a new feature or setting, read through our list of 10 tips and tricks below. We can"t promise they will change your life, but they will help you get the most out of your new phone.

It"s 2018, and notches are all the rage. After Apple announced the iPhone Xphones. With the G7, LG is giving users the option to hide the display notch altogether, or fully embrace it by highlighting it with colors.

Android users typically love their app drawer, so when a phone-maker does away with it in favor of a more iOS-like home screen, it can be jarring and frustrating.

LG"s Smart Bulletin is sort of useful. It lives to the left of your home screen and displays various shortcuts to music controls and updates based on the time of day.

Go to Settings > Extensions > Floating Bar and enable the feature. The bar includes options to include app shortcuts, screenshot tools, music controls and contact shortcuts.

The LG G7 ThinQ is an interesting phone that offers great sound quality, speedy software, and solid battery life. It’s a solid, if unremarkable, flagship, but it doesn’t always work as expected. We’ve been digging around to find the most commonly reported LG G7 ThinQ problems and we’ve identified possible workarounds or fixes to help you overcome them.

In December 2018, some LG G7 ThinQ owners began reporting a major issue with their handsets. After installing a software update, some European G7 ThinQ owners were no longer able to start their phones. That’s right, the G7 ThinQ is LG’s latest phone to suffer from bootlooping problems.

Start by going to Settings > Battery and make sure that Battery percentage on status bar is toggled on. Go to Settings > Display > New Second Screen and make sure it’s set to Standard. You should also go to Settings > Display > Display size and turn it all the way down to the smallest.

If none of that worked, then back up your files and try a factory reset. This will wipe your phone. Go to Settings > General > Backup & Reset > Factory Data Reset and tap Reset phone.

Update: The LG G7 is no longer the newest phone from the company now that theLG G8is out, but it still has decent specs and retailers have likely dropped its price accordingly. Here"s our updated review.

It"s a reasonable, but not significant upgrade over last year"s LG G6 with a larger 6.1-inch all-screen display, AI-enhanced cameras, a loud "Boombox Speaker", a faster chipset, and at long last, an update(opens in new tab) to Android 9 Pie.

But even though it"s been surpassed by the LG G8, It"s also likely cheaper - which is better value so long as you"re fine forgoing the newer phone"s more powerful chipset and fancy new gesture-recognition tech.

You may not immediately be wowed by any of the LG G7 specs in comparison. It doesn"t have a curved OLED screen like the Samsung Galaxy S10 line, the quad-lens rear camera of the Huawei P30 Pro, or the undeniable value of the OnePlus 6T. And despite its controversial notch cutout at the top, it doesn"t have Apple"s fancy 3D TrueDepth camera, as seen on the iPhone XS or iPhone X.

LG is emphasizing that this is a smart, not flashy, phone. As the "ThinQ" part of the name suggests, the company is determined to push AI onto all of its smart devices no matter how awkward the moniker sounds.

There"s a dedicated AI button on the left side of the phone, and LG isn"t forcing its own virtual assistant homebrew into your daily life like Samsung does with Bixby.

We tested LG G7 for several weeks, and noticed an uptick in photo quality next to the G6, just like we saw on the LG V30S ThinQ, the first LG phone with its AI camera and Bright Mode.

It"s not better than the Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel 2 XL, or Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus – most due to LG"s smaller camera sensor size – but it"s still a step up for LG, and this is one of the only phones with a wide-angle camera.

Depending on where you live, it"s either a good deal for a phone without much pizzazz (like in the UK), or overpriced and will have you counting down the days to the inevitable LG V40 (like in the US). LG G7 is this year"s smartphone sleeper hit no matter where you live.

The Super Bright Display mode lasts for three minutes, a cap meant to save your battery and not overheat the device. That was just enough time to read messages our phone screen while walking outdoors in direct sunlight in our preliminary testing.

The problem is that the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus we were carrying also showed a peak brightness of more than 1,000 nits. It’s one of the few phones that can do this besides the G7, but it’s also LG’s chief smartphone rival. It some cases, the G7 looked brighter without distorting the images on-screen, but not always.

One thing to note though, the glass rear of the LG G7 is a real fingerprint magnet, so if you"re not planning on putting a case on the phone be prepared to give it regular wipes.

I have been using it since September 2018. I had some problems along the way, but due to the updates everything is ok. I use the Canadian version in France and to be honest I have problems with the network because I travel a lot. the specifics of my work. Clean Android is a great idea for non-Google phones. they are as good as they are for speed. the difference is that productivity decreases with each android update which is not the case with the Google phone. then the battery wears out over time, if you remember and the iPhone had problems with the battery and has it, and intentionally decreased productivity. I have a hard time saying that I have a great phone but I am satisfied and it goes on through its sound. by the quality of the assembly. Android clean and last but not least drop resistance. my co-worker changed 4 phones of different brands (huawei, samsung, mi, oppo) and each of them at least twice the screen. to me no crack on the screen for 3 years. it"s like being out of the factory with only signs of wear. I"m sorry that LG doesn"t put new phones on the market anymore. but that"s it . they were too expensive but really worth every penny. I"m not talking about those who have had a bad experience. you happen to buy the same version twice and fall. take care of yourself and don"t forget that it"s an object and it"s not worth getting annoyed with. how you use it is the first problem

The LG G7 ThinQ is a flagship Android phone with a super bright display at its centerpiece. A tall, 6.1-inch LCD panel fills almost all of its front, save for a little cutout at the top where the earpiece and front camera reside. It is powered by the Snapdragon 845, has a cleverly designed loudspeaker, and packs a dual camera at the back. The latter allows for ultra-wide photos to be taken in tight spots, while also enabling portrait mode. AI capabilities enable scene recognition for more impressive photographs.
