Before calibrating any panel, we measure zero and 100 percent signals at both ends of the brightness control range. This shows us how contrast is affected at the extremes of a monitor"s luminance capability. We do not increase the contrast control past the clipping point. While doing this would increase a monitor’s light output, the brightest signal levels would not be visible. It"d result in crushed highlight detail. Our numbers show the maximum light level possible with no signal clipping.

At over 412 cd/m2, Asus" VG248QE is one of the brightest monitors we’ve tested. In fact, only the HP ZR2740w edges it out among screens reviewed this year. While you might not want to maximize brightness in many tasks, this kind of light output can significantly reduce off-axis falloff.

This is still an excellent result for such a light powerhouse. At .2949 cd/m2, the VG248QE runs with the majority. Even at maximum settings, you get a decent black level. TN screens have always had a small advantage in this area, and this measurement demonstrates that.

The VG248QE takes second place in our comparison group, and third place overall for the year. The only other monitor we’ve tested that maintains such a high contrast ratio at maximum brightness is Samsung"s S27B970D, which would take second place here.

This minimum on/off contrast ratio number is simply astounding. Remember that the HP is below our minimum white standard of 50 cd/m2, while Asus is not. With the tremendous dynamic range of this monitor and its wide control range, you can easily make it work in any imaginable viewing environment. We expect this to be a very useful feature for gamers using their rigs at LAN parties and other off-site venues. All you have to do is set your Brightness control to taste.

Once again, the VG248QE leads this group, but remains in second place overall behind ViewSonic"s VX2770Smh for the year. There aren’t many monitors that can maintain such high contrast after calibration. Again, the engineering here is top-notch.

We see many screens falter in this measurement. ANSI contrast is an extremely demanding test. For the VG248QE to do so well speaks to the quality of the grid polarizer used in its construction. This part is responsible for preventing light bleed between the darkest and lightest pixels in an LCD display. We’ve come to expect great ANSI performance from LG-based panels. Now we can add AU Optronics to the list. Asus made an excellent choice there.

This is expected behavior with select LCD monitors from the LCD maker Asus. Most LCD monitor manufactured for PCs use LCD panels which are manufactured by a company other than the maker of the monitor itself. Asus uses LCD panels manufactured by a company named Ancor Communications Inc. in some of their PC line of LCD monitors. Asus stores this information in the internal EDID of their LCD monitors. NVIDIA"s policy is to generate names based on the following template: "Manufacturer Name" + "Display Name"

In the case of certain Asus LCD monitors, the name is generated as: "Ancor Communications Inc." + "ASUS "model number". Since this string is too long to be displayed fully in the NVIDIA Control Panel, it is truncated which is why you will only see the name "Ancor Communications" or smaller depending on the size of the window. This is not considered an NVIDIA driver bug.

The ASUS VG248QE monitor is very similar to the BenQ XL2411T in that it uses the same LC panel, supports NVIDIA"s 3D LightBoost, and allows for refresh rates up to 144Hz. It differs from the BenQ XL2411T in that it has a somewhat less stable casing (-), a shiny bezel (-), internal speakers (+), pulse-width-modulated backlight (at a high PWM frequency though) (-), and a much better overdrive control (++). Moreover, the ASUS VG248QE is upgradable with NVIDIA"s GSYNC DIY upgrade kit. This feature is of little use though, as the upgrade kit is not easy to come by – not in Europe anyway. Note that earlier releases of the XL2411T also used PWM backlight (at a low PWM frequency of 180Hz).

When compared to the BenQ XL2411Z, the successor of the XL2411T, the ASUS lacks the flicker-free backlight and, obviously, BenQ"s motion blur reduction feature. However, the ASUS has the advantage of 2D LightBoost being unlockable with ToastyX"s Strobelight tool, which does not work anymore for the Z-versions of BenQ"s XL monitors.

The ASUS VG248QE has a pulse-width-modulated LED backlight, which is usually not seen as a plus, as it can interfere with the monitor"s refresh rate and also causes strobe effects in the presence of eye movements or when motion is being presented. Rather often, manufacturers choose a PWM frequency as low as 180Hz, but ASUS does not only apply a much higher PWM frequency of up to 864Hz (at a 144Hz refresh rate) but also synchronizes the PWM signal to the refresh cycle. The PWM frequency scales with the refresh rate (fPWM=6·frefresh). It should be mentioned that this has been measured with a monitor manufactured in June 2013. Older monitors apparently used a lower PWM frequency of just 360Hz (review on PRAD.de) which might or might not have been scaled with the refresh rate and synchronized to the refresh cycle. CORRECTION: Ahem, 360Hz=6·60Hz, so PRAD.de probably just measured the PWM frequency for a refresh rate of 60Hz, at which it is 360Hz also for monitors manufactured as late as August 2016 (at least).

The ASUS VG248QE allows controlling overdrive through the Trace free parameter which can be set to one of 6 different values (0,20,40,60,80,100). This is obviously better than having only two or three overdrive levels available with BenQ"s XL monitors. Unfortunately, the Trace free parameter is not accessible via DDC/CI (Display Data Channel/Command Interface).

Side note: One might come up with the idea of combining the better overdrive with a hardware-tweaked strobed backlight in order to create something similar to BenQ"s motion blur reduction feature. Such a mode would benefit from an accelerated LC panel update speed which could be achieved to some extent by tweaking the video signal timing (see Monitor timing (tweaking it) in the BenQ XL2411Z review). Unfortunately, the ASUS VG248QE is much more picky when it comes to signal timing and does not allow for stretching the VSync phase much further than normal.

Notice how the integrals (i.e., the pulse energies) of the first high pulse (right panel) and the last high pulse (left panel) are somewhat cut off because the backlight strobe comes too early or too late with respect to the respective pixel settling curves.

I bought the Asus VG248QE 24-inch 3D Monitor four months ago, and it is probably one of the best pieces of gaming equipment I"ve ever bought. Before this monitor, I never realised the significance of specs such as refresh rates and response times, but now I know the difference between gaming on a 60Hz 1080p TV and gaming on a 144Hz 1ms gaming monitor.

My games appear on the screen more smoothly now than they did on my 60Hz TV. I used to sit at my desk and use my 42-inch TV as if it were a monitor, which although I got used to it after a while, it did make my eyes hurt a little bit sometimes since I had to stare at such a large screen for hours at a time. Now with this Asus monitor, that problem is solved as my eyes feel more relaxed when looking at the smaller screen, and I initially had doubts about switching to a screen that was almost half the size of my HDTV.

In January 2022, Asus announced the ROG Flow Z13 during the ROG"s CES 2022 launch event. Asus motherboards sometimes include a Q-Connector which sits in between the motherboard front panel connectors and the front panel cables. The Q-Connector is marked with bigger text than the front panel connectors on the motherboard, as well as protruding from the motherboard, limiting obstruction from heatsinks and other connectors.

The Q-connector allows the many front-panel connections to be removed as a single unit for maintenance. This greatly reduces the risk of incorrect connections when reassembling.

In 2006, Asus obtained IECQ (IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components) HSPM (Hazardous Substance Process Management) certification for its headquarters and for all of its manufacturing sites.

In September 2008, Microsoft and other organizations, internal Asus documents, and sensitive personal information including CVs. At the time, an Asus spokesperson promised an investigation at "quite a high level", but declined to comment on how the files got on the machines and recovery media.

In February 2014, a security vulnerability in the AiCloud functions on a number of Asus routers was compromised to distribute a text file warning of a vulnerability, disclosed in June 2013, allowing the ability to "traverse to any external storage plugged in through the USB ports on the back of the router" via the open internet. Before making the vulnerability public, the researcher was told by Asus that the behavior was "not an issue", but the vulnerability was reportedly patched shortly prior to the breach.Federal Trade Commission issued a complaint about the breach for the company"s "failure to employ reasonable security practices has subjected consumers to substantial injury", alleging that Asus had also failed to perform basic penetration tests, allowed users to maintain a default admin password for the AiDisk feature and failed to notify users of security updates in a timely fashion. As a result, it was also deemed that Asus had misled consumers over the security and protection that its routers provided. In February 2016, Asus settled the complaint, agreeing to implement a "comprehensive security program", including independent audits every two years for the next 20 years.

In March 2019, Kaspersky Lab researchers disclosed a supply chain attack that affected the Asus Live Update software bundled on its laptops, dubbed ShadowHammer. Kaspersky stated that between June and November 2018, Asus servers had been compromised to distribute a modified version of Live Update, signed with an Asus signature, that contained a backdoor. It deployed a further payload if the device"s network adapter matched an entry on an internal target list of around 600 MAC addresses. In response to ShadowHammer, Asus released a patched version of Live Update with improved security measures. Kaspersky and Symantec estimated that between 500,000 and 1 million devices were infected with the backdoor, although Asus attempted to downplay the severity of the breach by noting the extremely targeted nature of the attack. The breach did not affect the similar, identically named software associated with its motherboards.

In April 2019, ESET disclosed that a group known as BlackTech had performed targeted attacks with malware known as Plead, distributed via the updater for the Asus WebStorage service. ESET stated that the group was likely using a man-in-the-middle attack via a vulnerability in routers, in combination with the updater using an unencrypted HTTP connection.

In January 2022, Asus recalled some of its Z690 Maximus Hero motherboards due to a manufacturing flaw, where a RAM capacitor was installed backwards—causing them to burn out associated MOSFETs and prevent the motherboard from detecting memory.

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, ASUS initially refused to join the international community and withdraw from the Russian market. In mid-March the company did announce its halting its operations in Russia, following a social media boycott and government pressure.
