The Anycubic Photon resin 3D printer is popular among users for not only its performance but also affordable price. This solid 3D printer is easy to assembly, produces good print quality and is easy to use.

The Photon S is available in 2 colors: black and white. On the other hand, the Photon is only available in black. The white 3D printer looks very stylish. However, here we are going to look at the black option so that the visual differences are obvious.

However, the S-version has a plastic case, unlike the metal one for a simple Photon. The use of a plastic case rather than a metal one was probably meant to keep its costs low. Due to other improvements, the cost of the printer also increased. At this time, the difference in pricing is about $50.

Moving on to the body, the old version outperforms the new one. The Anycubic Photon looks more solid and reliable. However, the Anycubic Photon S is much lighter.

Coming to the viewing window, the Photon S window is larger on all sides (NB: in the photo, we have brand new printers with protective packaging on glass).

The Z-axis of the Photon was wobbly. In the Photon S, it has been strengthened with a stronger structure, eliminating the vibrations of the printing platform and ensuring more accurate printing, especially of small parts. There is also an optical limit switch along the Z axis.

In the Anycubic Phonton, the touchscreen sensor periodically did not work or refused to work without a flash drive. This issue has now been eliminated in the Photon S.

Also, in the previous version, the screen was installed at an angle. In the Photon S, the screen is right under the lid with almost no tilt. Is this better? Well, it all depends on someone’s preferences.

Another significant change is the UV module. In Photon S, a UV-matrix with lenses for each diode is installed as a light source. In the Photon, the UV-matrix with lenses is installed for 4 diodes on Photon. The illumination power in the Photon S is increased by 10W.

The positioning accuracy in all axes is the same. However, the new matrix leads to a more uniform distribution of the illumination and reduces the risk of stray illumination. In fact, the quality of the printed models has really improved.

The Photon S build area has increased by 10 mm in the Z-axis and is now 115 x 65 x 165 mm. Of course, nothing significant, but on the whole, a pleasant and not an extra bonus.

The Photon S has two charcoal air filters while the original Photon has only one. The twin filters should more effectively purify the air from not the most useful vapors. In your workshop,  there will now be less smell of resins, a plus for Photon S.

The Photon S is a worthy upgrade of its predecessor. Anycubic has tried to take into account all the requests and complaints of ordinary Photon users and incorporated them into the Photon S.

We love that the budget resin 3D printer has improved in terms of quality, printing speed, and features (e.g. a new touch screen, a double air filter., increasing the height of the print area, etc.). The only area where the new Photon S loses to its older brother is that it has a plastic case instead of a metal one. However, this does not affect the print.

In every industry, there"s a product that arrives that disrupts everything that has come before. Many do it with innovation, features or in the case of the AnyCubic Photon S(opens in new tab) price.

The Photon S is a DLP (Digital Light Projector) 3D printer, a technology similar to SLA (Stereolithography) but a whole lot cheaper. By cheap, it"s far less than half the price of the leading consumer-based SLA brands and is available at the same price as many FDM (fused deposition modelling) printers.

Unlike FDM 3D printers that use a solid filament which is heated and extruded to create the final model, DLP uses a resin that is first exposed to UV light, then washed and cured before you get the result.

Simple by design, the Photon S outwardly has few moving parts. The small 200x220m footprint and height of 400mm ensure the printer takes up little room in the workshop.

Files are transferred to the machine by either direct USB or an 8GB USB Stick supplied by AnyCubic in the box. A sample model is included on the USB key; an intricate cube that shows off the quality of a 50-micron print.

As seen with other DLP printers, the resin bath is held in place by two thumb bolts that can be quickly released, enabling the tank to be removed and cleaned.

A nice touch is that the base of the resin bath is a single sheet of PEI which is held in place by a series of bolts that clamp it tight. These sheets degrade over time, so it"s good to see that AnyCubic give you an easy option for replacing them when needed.

Below the bath is the 2560 x 1440 resolution LCD screen, this needs to be kept clean and particle-free at all times, a lens cloth, not included, is a good idea for ensuring it"s upkeep.

Above where the bath resides is the build platform, this is suspended upsidedown as is the case with DLP and SLA printers. This enables it to be dipped into the resin when each layer is exposed and raised between exposures.

Initial set-up is quick, all that"s required is for the packaging to be removed then it can then be plugged in and powered on. The whole process at a leisurely pace takes around five minutes.

Once the printer"s LCD lights up the next stage is to remove the build platform and resin bath ready for calibration. Both components are held in place by thumbscrews and require the build platform to be raised.

Here the interface proves to be intuitive, and it takes a few seconds to find the option. What stands out is that the instructions are crystal clear. They show the exact process that needs to be followed, this should be a given, but is so often not the case.

On the Build Platform, there"s a small grub screw that needs to be loosened ready for the calibration process; this allows the platform a little free side-to-side movement.

Now, with the resin bath still removed and the build platform back in place, "Move Z" is selected through the "Tools" menu then "Home" and the platform lowers.

Like calibrating an FDM printer, a sheet of paper is placed over the LCD, and through the "TOOLS" menu the Z-axis is lowered until there"s some resistance when trying to extract the piece of paper.

With calibration out of the way, there"s just one more test before getting started with the resin. First, the platform is raised to 120mm, then "Tools > Detection > Next".
