Check the specifications of your laptop for information regarding the number of displays it can support and the type of connections the laptop has available, such as HDMI, USB, Thunderbolt, etc.

Typically, there will be at least one connection available from the laptop for another display such as HDMI or VGA. You can connect your first external monitor to this connection to get a second display.

For a third display, you will typically need a docking station to add more ports to the laptop. There are universal docking stations that will work with most systems.

You may also need to install drivers onto the computer for the dock to fully function. The dock may include an installation CD, otherwise please refer to the manufacturer’s website for downloadable drivers.

You will now see three monitors available to select and arrange. Scroll down until you see the Multiple displayssection to ensure that you have it set to Extend these displays to extend the display across the monitors.

Return to the Select and rearrange displays area and select the Identify button. A large number will appear on each display to correspond to the display settings numbers to identify each monitor. This will help with arranging the monitors in the settings to ensure they are extending properly between laptop and external monitors.

Most computers have the built-in ability to power a second screen. First, find the HDMI or DisplayPort socket on your laptop or desktop. If you own an older computer, you might be looking for a white DVI or a blue VGA socket instead. All four types of ports let you connect your computer to a television, projector, or other secondary screen.

If your computer has one of these ports, all you’ll need is the proper cable. However, some thinner and lighter laptop models lack a compatible port. For those, you may have to add an adapter into the mix.

For example, slimmed-down laptops like Apple’s MacBook Air and Google’s Pixelbook rely on USB-C ports for data transfer, charging, and video output. A few monitors do accept USB-C, but not all do. In that case, you’ll need an adapter to covert USB-C to HDMI (like this $16.99 dongle) or to DisplayPort (such as this $9.85 adapter cable) before you can plug the laptop into your monitor.

Some computers will require other dongles. Take Microsoft’s Surface Pro 5: it includes a Mini DisplayPort that accepts a Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable (like this $10.99 one), which will, in turn, plug into any monitor with a DisplayPort. Alternatively, if you prefer an HDMI monitor, you could connect the Surface to a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI dongle (such as this $5.99 adapter), then a standard HDMI cable.

You won’t necessarily have to buy your second screen. If you’ve got an old monitor lying around the house, see if it will work with your laptop or desktop computer before getting rid of it. Even if it’s a bit dated by today’s standards, you should be able to find an adapter to help. This will help you avoid spending any money on your extra display.

Still, you may have to buy new gear to complete your second-screen setup. Now that you’ve checked your computer’s ports, you’ll need a monitor that matches them—or that can be made to do so with a suitable adapter. Ideally, look for monitors with USB-C, HDMI, or DisplayPort inputs, as these are the most common modern standards.

Once you’ve decided on the correct input, you can check other specs, such as screen size, resolution, and price. Bigger, higher-resolution screens will give you more room for your movies, spreadsheets, and video games, but they inevitably cost more, too. It’s up to you where you want to make the compromise, but you’ll generally want to go for the biggest, highest-resolution screen your budget can accommodate.

If you’re on a laptop, though, be aware that powering more pixels will take more graphics processing power and therefore use up more battery life. In other words, the bigger the second display, the bigger the drain on your battery.

Other specifications to look out for include contrast ratios (the difference between the white and black pixels), response time (how quickly the screen responds to your inputs), and viewing angles (from how acute of an angle you can see the screen). As usual, online reviews are the best way to measure the quality of a display. That said, Dell and LG have a particularly good reputation for their screens.

Setup is extremely easy: As soon as you plug in a second monitor, your computer will recognize it without requiring any extra software or a complicated setup process. You can, however, take a few optional steps to configure it exactly as you like it. The exact process will depend on your computer’s operating system.

On Windows, tap Windows+P to switch between four display modes: PC screen only (only the original computer screen is active), Duplicate (your two screens show the same thing), Extend (your two screens act as one large display), or Second screen only (the external monitor is the only active one). Most of the time, you’ll want the Extend option, which will allow you to open apps and windows independently on both screens. To further configure your second display, open the Start menu, click the Settings icon (the cog symbol), and choose System, followed by Display. From here, you can configure the brightness, resolution, and orientation of both screens. If you’re using two displays as one extended screen, you can also use this menu to set which monitor will be on the left and which on the right.

Over on macOS, open the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, and then click Displays. Under the Arrangement tab (which will only appear once you’ve connected to a second screen), you can change the relative positions of your displays—which one is on the left screen and which is on the right. Using the Mirror Displays checkbox, you can also switch between mirrored mode (the two screens act as duplicates) and extended mode (the two screens act as one display). In addition, you can set the screen resolution from this same menu.

If you’re on a Chrome OS computer, click the information panel in the lower right-hand corner (where the clock is). Then select the cog icon, go to the Settings panel, and choose Displays. From this menu, you can configure whether the second display acts as an extension or a duplicate of the first one, set the resolution and orientation of your displays, and position them in virtual space.

When you’re done, sit back and enjoy using your second screen. If you’re operating in extended mode, you can drag program windows between displays and maximize them on either screen. And whenever you disconnect or switch off the second monitor, your operating system will automatically revert back to its default configuration.

Under System , select Display . Your PC should automatically detect your monitors and show your desktop. If you don"t see the monitors, select Multiple displays , then Detect.

There are various ways you can get a repeater or dual-screen capability with a Raymarine Multifunction Display (MFD), with different advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the options:

complete flexibility: show chart on one screen, fishfinder or radar on another, or whatever you want. Each display will share all of the same data (excepting analogue video inputs on older MFD ranges)

marinised, water-resistant, sunlight viewable display: you"re not relying on a non-sunlight-viewable tablet screen and a protective case, a non-marine TV or other home/office grade device

Several recent generations of Raymarine MFDs have the capability to connect multiple MFDs and share all data between them, including chart card, radar and fishfinder. Generally speaking only displays from the same range are compatible, though there are limited exceptions. Displays MUST be running the same software version except in the specific cases listed below.

The following MFD ranges were designed as standalone products and have no remote display / repeater capability at all. They cannot use any of the connection methods described above:

Switch to other apps or your desktop with Mission Control, or use a Multi-Touch gesture such as swiping left or right with four fingers on your trackpad.

The other window switches to full-screen view. You can switch to the full-screen window with Mission Control, or use a Multi-Touch gesture such as swiping left or right with four fingers on your trackpad.

With extended desktop mode, you can get a larger Windows* desktop area spanning multiple displays. You can move applications from one display to the other.

After completing the previous steps:If desired, re-arrange the displays according to your configuration. Click and hold on a display to move the displays in a different arrangement.

Tip:If you"re using a wireless display adapter, connect to an HDMI port on newer TVs, then wirelessly connect your PC to it. After connecting your wireless display adapter to your TV, go to your Windows 11 PC, press Windows logo key + K to open Cast, then select your wireless display adapter.

To see which number corresponds to a display, select Start, then search for settings. Select Settings > System > Display> Identify. A number appears on the screen of the display it"s assigned to.

If you have multiple displays, you can change how they"re arranged. This is helpful if you want your displays to match how they"re set up in your home or office. In Display settings, select and drag the display to where you want. Do this with all the displays you want to move. When you"re happy with the layout, select Apply. Test your new layout by moving your mouse pointer across the different displays to make sure it works like you expect.

After you"re connected to your external displays, you can change settings like your resolution, screen layout, and more. To see available options, in Settings, select System > Display.

Windows will recommend an orientation for your screen. To change it in Display settings, under Scale & layout, choose your preferred Display orientation. If you change the orientation of a monitor, you"ll also need to physically rotate the screen. For example, you"d rotate your external display to use it in portrait instead of landscape.

A poor connection between the monitor and the computer might cause display-related issues. Reconnecting the devices can often help solve the problem.Turn off the computer and the monitor.

Check the video port on the computer and the monitor, and the video cable if they are damaged or the pins are bent. If there is no damage, reconnect the monitor to the computer. Or, if you have another video cable, try connecting the two devices using the new cable. Bypass the docking station to verify that the docking station is not causing the display issue.

Splitters are supported in DisplayPort connections, for example, which will allow you to use one port on the laptop to connect a number of monitors, although this isn’t a very economical way to do it since it might be a bit expensive.

You might find that occasionally monitors will have an additional port to allow you to connect the signal from your device to each monitor by “daisy chaining” from one monitor to the next, although it’s worth pointing out this isn’t very common.

Alternatively, if you have a hub or a laptop with a DVI, USB-C, Displayport, and HDMI, feel free to mix and match the monitors. Do bear in mind that you’ll need to select the best input for each monitor’s specification so that you get the best refresh rate and resolution out of each one. This is known as the “all-hands-on-deck” strategy.

As technology continues to progress and new standards are created, it’s becoming more frequent to find difficulties in achieving the result you want. This also applies to monitors. The everyday, casual, user might not be familiar with USB-C, Displayport, or HDMI, and it’s not always clear for them. Usually, a task which should essentially be “plug this into this” becomes complex and time consuming. However, don’t let this dissuade you from accomplishing your monitor goal, just make sure you do plenty of research before buying a cable, and make sure it’s the one you need. Once you’ve overcome this, the rest is more or less quite straightforward.

Whether you want to stop toggling apps on your notebook or just want to edit your photos on a bigger display, duplicating your screen may be the solution. You can extend your Mac’s screen to an external monitor, making it possible to multitask more easily and have room to fully display images and documents. Today we will explain how to duplicate the screen on a Mac and use it in several ways.

It is possible to extend the screen on a Mac by hooking up a second or a third monitor to your Apple computer. Then, depending on your needs, you can operate several Mac screens in different ways:

Check your Apple computer’s display specifications. For this, click on the Apple logo in the menu bar → About This Mac → Support → in the Mac Resources section, select Specifications. In the next moment, the Apple Specifications page appears in your browser. On this page, under the Graphics and Video section you can find the display capabilities, including the number of external monitors supported and adapters needed.

Use a serviceable external monitor. You can choose any monitor you’d like, as long as the monitor specs and connector type fit with your display Specifications.

As soon as you have everything you need, you can set up and use a dual screen on your Mac. To use a second monitor to extend your Mac’s screen and operate two displays with different content, follow the next steps:

On your Mac, click on the Apple logo in the menu bar → System Preferences → Displays. Do not tick the box Mirror Displays unless you want the Mac’s second monitor to duplicate the desktop monitor.

Select the Arrangement tab. You will see two displays, which you can move within this tab to arrange their position. Depending on the physical location of your external monitor, you can drag its image from the top, bottom, right, or left within the Arrangement tab. The white bar on one of the displays means that it is your primary display. In this way, the apps appear on the primary display first. You can change the primary display by dragging the white bar to another display within the Arrangement tab.

If you want to see on your external monitor the same content as on your Mac, you need to enable Mirror Displays. For this, go to System Preferences → Displays → Arrangement → select Mirror Displays. You can also use a keyboard shortcut Command+Fn+1 to toggle display mirroring on and off.

If you want to operate your Mac notebook while using an external monitor instead of the built-in display, you can use the closed-display mode. This mode allows you to use the Mac notebook with its lid closed. Even while it appears to be in sleep mode, it isn’t.

In addition to the previously-mentioned steps, you will need to connect an external keyboard and mouse, either USB or wireless. To use your Mac notebook with an external monitor as the primary and only display, take the following steps:

Hook up a USB keyboard and mouse. If you prefer to use a wireless keyboard and mouse, you should make some changes to the preferences. Go to System Preferences → Bluetooth → click on the Turn Bluetooth On button. Connect the wireless keyboard and mouse to your Mac notebook. Then, within the Bluetooth pane, click on the Advanced button → select Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer and click OK.

Check to see if the mirroring option is enabled in the Arrangement tab of the Displays pane. If so, in a brief moment you will see that the external monitor duplicates your Mac notebook’s desktop.

Then you can close the notebook lid. If you are using OS X 10.7 and later, the external monitor first becomes blue, then shows you the notebook’s display. If you are using OS X 10.6.8 and earlier, click the mouse button or hit any key on the keyboard to wake your Mac notebook and use an external monitor.

You can connect one or more external displays, depending on your Mac.For Mac computers with the Apple M1 Chip: You can connect a single external display to your Mac. Docks don’t increase the number of displays you can connect. On a Mac mini with M1 chip, you can connect a second display to the HDMI port. For Mac computers with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C): You can connect a single display to each port. If you connect multiple Thunderbolt devices to each other, the Thunderbolt 3 display must be the last device in the chain. If your Thunderbolt 3 display has USB ports, those can be used for data and power.

For Mac computers with Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or Thunderbolt 2: You can connect up to two displays. If the displays themselves have Thunderbolt ports, you can connect one display to another, and then connect one of the displays to a Thunderbolt port on your Mac. If your Mac has two Thunderbolt ports, you can connect each display to separate Thunderbolt ports on your Mac. A DisplayPort device must be the last device in a chain of connected Thunderbolt devices. See Connect a display, TV, or projector to Mac.

For Mac computers with Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) and HDMI ports: You can connect up to four external displays to your Mac, depending on your Mac model. See the Apple Support article Connect a display to your Mac.

Note:Only the device directly connected to your Mac receives power from the computer’s Thunderbolt port. The other devices in the chain must be powered by separate power adapters.

You can arrange your displays in any configuration to create an extended desktop. For example, you can set your external display side by side with your Mac to create one large continuous desktop.

If more than two displays are connected to your Mac, you can specify that some displays use mirroring (showing the entire desktop) and other displays show the extended desktop (displaying the desktop across two or more displays). For example, if you have three displays, you can have two displays showing the same information and the third display showing the extended desktop.Press and hold the Option key and drag one display icon onto another display icon to mirror those two displays.

Curved monitors like the Samsung CHG90, Acer Predator Z35p and AOC AG352UCG are all well and good for making you feel more immersed in a game, what with those ultrawide edges supposedly wrapping themselves closer round your eyeballs like some kind of pixelated caress on your peripheral vision, but let"s face it. Curved monitors are hideously expensive and any bend they do possess is often so tiny that you"d be forgiven for thinking you"ve actually bought a flat screen by mistake.

No, the only way to get truly suckered into a game is to go multi-monitor. I"m not talking two monitors, either. I"m talking about creating a THREE-sided boxed-in bezel palace that shuts off all notion of the outside world. Here, there are only games stretching, quite literally, as far as the eye can see. And I"m going to tell you how to set it all up in five easy steps.

Okay, the real Step One:The first thing you need to do is make sure you"ve got a graphics card with enough outputs on the back to support three monitors. Doesn"t matter what combination of ports you"ve got. As long as you"ve got three or more and your graphics card supports more than two displays, then you"re good to go. My Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070Ti, for example, has three DisplayPorts, one HDMI and one DVI-D, and for the purposes of this experiment I used two DP and one HDMI.

Step Two: Buy/scrounge/cobble together three monitors and connect them up to your PC. It doesn"t matter if they"re all the same screen or a different make - you just need three of them. Step Three: Once you"ve acquired and arranged your displays, preferably not hanging off the edge of your desk, then it"s time for the fun bit - setting them up. If you"re running Windows 7 or Windows 8, just right click anywhere on your desktop and select Screen Resolution. Windows 10 users, on the other hand, will need to right click and choose Display Settings. Once there, you"ll need to arrange each monitor correctly. Click Identify and a big number will pop up on each screen.

Make sure they match the order that"s shown in the Display Settings menu and drag and drop them into place if not. Windows 10 will save any changes automatically, but Windows 7 and 8 peeps will need to click Apply for anything to take effect.

Next, you"ll want to select "Extend these displays" in the Multiple Displays option. I"d also recommend making your central screen your main display, as this is where your shortcuts will be placed. You can, of course, make a different one your main display if you prefer.

For Nvidia graphics cards, you need to enable Surround. To do this, find the 3D Settings option on the left hand menu and select "Configure Surround, PhysX". Tick the box that says "Span displays with Surround" and hit Configure. You"ll probably need to close some programs before you do so, but once that"s done you"ll be taken to the Surround Setup screen.

A bit like the Windows display settings, you"ll need to make sure the monitors are all in the correct order. Select 1x3 in the Topology box, and then tick the boxes in the Display menu underneath to match the numbers being displayed onscreen. Check the resolution"s as high as it can go in the Resolution box, and make sure your refresh rate is set to 60Hz (or higher if all three of your monitors support higher refresh rates). Then click Apply.

Now, Quick Setup is fine if your monitors all have the same resolution, but you"ll need to use the Advanced Setup if your monitors are different. In my case, I had two 2560x1440 monitors and one 3840x2160 one and Quick Setup doesn"t take into account 4K scaling, so I had a giant black bar across my 4K screen from 2560 pixels down. For what it"s worth, Nvidia"s Surround software just gets on with it and handles it all automatically, negating the need for the faff that"s about to ensue.

Now you"ve got to align them, which is the fiddly part. The Align All tool is quite handy, as this repositions everything automatically, but you can faff around with it manually if you really want to. Those with different monitor resolutions will have to ignore the numbers, as they simply don"t match up. For sake of argument, I used the tool to have my two smaller outer monitors aligned in the middle of the 4K one. Once that"s done, you"ll need to decide how your desktop"s going to be shown onscreen.

I picked the Fill option here, as it was the only one that brought my 4K monitor in line with my two 1440p ones without cutting anything off. Yes, you lose some of the top and bottom resolution of the 4K monitor (essentially making it a third 1440p monitor), but that"s the price you pay for ultrawide gaming on different monitor resolutions.

Step Five: Once that"s all done, congratulations! You"re ready for some incredi-widescreen gaming, like playing Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age in an aspect ratio no one ever asked for or really needs.

You"ll need to configure the resolution for each game you play (not all games support three-monitor setups, but the WSGF has a pretty extensive list of those that do), but otherwise you"re pretty much good to go. You may also want to fiddle with the field of view setting if you can, as low fields of view can make everything feel a bit too close while higher ones might look too distorted.

You may also want to turn off Nvidia Surround or AMD Eyefinity for everyday multi-monitor use as well, as maximizing any given window will see it hogging your entire three-screen setup rather than just a single monitor. Wallpapers and such will also stretch across the entire display area with Surround and Eyefinity turned on, whereas you"ll get three separate desktop backgrounds when they"re disabled.
