MSI GE62 GP62 PE60 motherboards have two or three slots available for the m.2 solid state drive upgrade. In my case I didn’t have any m.2 SSDs installed but more expensive models come with SSDs installed at factory.

In some cases the hinge problem might occur inside the display panel like shown on the following picture. The hinge gets detached from the display cover. You can try fixing it with standard machine screws but it will not look perfect.

More power. The GeForce GTX 970M is significantly more powerful than the previously tested GE62 model (GeForce GTX 965M). Sadly, even this 4K panel does not make the cut.

The MSI GE62 is a powerful 15.6-inch gaming laptop offering a quad-core Core i7 processor and a GeForce GTX 970M GPU, which is a powerful duo, capable of running all games fluidly. Avid readers will be aware that we previously released a review of a different configuration of this model which uses the GeForce GTX 965M.

The competition of the GE62 is numerous and includes, amongst others, the Acer Aspire VN7-591G, the Schenker XMG A505 and the Alienware 15. Of course, the entire Top 10 list of Gaming Notebooks can be considered serious competition for this test model.

As both the GE62 models have the same build, we will not discuss the case, the connectivity, the input devices or the speakers. Please take a look at our previous review for more information on these topics. The following pictures are from the review of the MSI GE62-2QEUi716H21BW.

MSI presents a 15.6-inch gaming laptop which offers more than enough performance for everyday use and gaming. Our test configuration is available for 1,679 Euros (~$1921). MSI offers other configurations as well.

MSI equips the GE62 with a Core i7-4720HQ quad-core CPU (Haswell). This processor is a ULV model and has a TDP value of 47 W. It operates at a base clock speed of 2.6 GHz. Turbo Boost allows the speed to rise to 3.4 GHz (all cores), 3.5 GHz (2 cores) and 3.6 GHz (1 core). The Turbo feature is also fully used: in the multithread tests the laptop runs at 3.2 to 3.4 GHz and in the single-thread tests the processor offers between 3.4 to 3.6 GHz. On battery, the Turbo is only available in the single-thread test (2.6 - 2.7 GHz; sometimes 3.1 GHz). However, it is used far more conservatively. Multithread applications are always run at the base clock speed.

The system performance of the MSI laptop leaves no room for complaint: the system operates fluidly. After all, this is a high-end gaming laptop as can be seen from the great PCMark benchmarks. However, similarly-equipped laptops, like the Alienware 15, outperform our test model. The reason: the latter is equipped with a FHD panel whereas we use a 4K display. Once the resolution is dropped to FHD, the laptop performs at a similar level. The system performance of the GE62 can be further increased thanks to two empty M.2 slots which can work in RAID mode.

MSI gives the GE62 a Solid State Drive as its main drive. The SSD is an M.2 model which offers a capacity of 128 GB, of which the user is left with 100 GB. The rest of the storage space is occupied by the Windows installation. The transfer speeds of the SSD are good and you can always install a second Solid State Drive (M.2 Type 2280). As 100 GB is too little storage for a gaming notebook, the laptop is equipped with a traditional hard drive. The hard drive offers a capacity of 1 TB and runs at 7,200 rpm. The Recovery Partition of Windows is placed on this drive.

The GE62 has switchable graphics (Optimus) which swaps between the Intel HD Graphics 4600 IGP and the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M. The Intel IGP requires little power and suffices for everyday and battery use. If you require more performance, the GeForce GPU can be utilized. The entire process is automatic and can be manually controlled if necessary. The GeForce GTX 970M is a top-class GPU which operates at a base clock speed of 924 MHz and Turbo boosts it to 1,038 MHz. The GPU has 3,072 MB GDDR5 VRAM (192-bit interface). The results of the 3DMark benchmark are high, as expected. In comparison to the previously tested GTX 965M configuration, the laptop offers up to 40% better scores in the 3DMark benchmarks.

The full resolution of the panel (3840x2160 pixels) is possible in most games and we tried out a few games at this resolution. We used the same quality settings we use in regular game tests, Of course, the lower the game requirements, the better it runs at 4K.Gamemin.medhighmax.Tomb Raider76.449.637.125.1

Ideally, the MSI laptop should be quiet. This can occur now and then when the two fans turn off (laptop is idle) and the traditional hard drive is still. However, the fans are often running, and they get quite loud at load. During our stress test, we measured an emission of 51.8 dB. In a normal gaming session, the laptop is a little quieter. We recorded emissions between 43 to 50 dB (average 46 dB). The fan is known to quickly turn up and down but overall we feel the GE62 models are okay in terms of noise emission.

We could only run our stress test (Prime95 and Furmark run for at least an hour) while the laptop is plugged in, as on battery, the test crashes the laptop within a few seconds. The CPU runs the stress test at 2.0 to 2.3 GHz and the GPU operates at 680 to 700 MHz. The surfaces heat up a little more than on the GTX 965M model. We noticed that the device crossed the 50 °C mark in quite a few spots. Both GE62 models heat up more on the top than the bottom.

While idle, the GE62 runs for 3:54 h. One of the main competitors, the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro VN7-591G-727P, gives up a little earlier (3:36 h). The Battery Eater Reader"s test checks battery life while the laptop is idle: the panel is set to the lowest brightness, the "Power Saver" profile is on and all wireless modules are turned off. At load, the GE62 gives up after 1:03 hours. Once again, the Aspire (0:58 h) is a few minutes behind. The runtime at load is tested using the Battery Eater Classic test. In this test, the display has max brightness and all wireless modules are on.

The practical WLAN test gives us a realistic estimation of the runtime of our test model: 2:42 h. The Aspire (2:46 h) is the same. In this test, our script loads random websites every 40 seconds. The "Power Saver" profile is on and brightness is set to around 150 cd/m². We test the battery life during video playback by running Big Buck Bunny (H.264, 1920x1080 pixels) in a loop. The wireless module is off and brightness is set to around 150 cd/m². The GE62 lasts 2:45 h and is on the same level as the Aspire at 2:56 h.

The MSI GE62 is a powerful 15.6-inch gaming notebook. Most games run at high resolutions (Full HD) and high settings fluidly. The notebook is equipped with an SSD and an HDD, which offers users the advantages of both devices. The 4K IPS panel did not blow our minds, as it is neither very bright nor does it offer even illumination. We expect more given the price.

Enter the MSI GE62 2QD Apache Gaming notebook from, you guessed it, MSI!  This sub £1100 portable gaming powerhouse features the new NVIDIA GTX 960M graphics card which comes with 2GB of VRAM; perfect for the 15.6″ 1080p screen which is also included.  This is powered by the 4th generation Intel Core i7 4720HQ processor which turbos at 3.6GHz; the stock speeds are 2.6GHz but can be controlled via the intuitive MSI Gaming app which comes featured with the GE62 Apache series.  Add 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3, 1 x 128GB SSD and 1 x 1TB HDD into the mix and you have a pretty potent little gaming notebook.  Of course MSI know this and have impecabbly designed their entire range of Gaming series notebooks from the entry level range all the way to the GT80 Titan SLI; this one will set you back £3000+!

If I had to sum up the MSI GE62 2QD Apache in a short sentence, it would include such words as manificent, blingy, premium and quality.  Ok so that was a sentence too which featured all those words but I guess you get the idea right?  The GE62 2QD combines top of the range components with more budget/mid-range orientated components to give it a price achieveable for most consumers looking to either move into the gaming notebook world, or for those wanting to completely replace their desktop to save space, maybe go travelling with or any other reason imaginable.

So what are my main highlights?  Well first of all, the included SteelSeries keyboard is a nice nifty innovation and you will only find these currently on MSI gaming notebooks which is great for MSI; the SteelSeries Engine 3 software is one of the easiest and most intuitive pieces of peripheral software I have ever used, even Engine 2 was brilliant so a testament to SteelSeries here; sorry MSI!  Although another striking MSI feature aside from the MSI Gaming APP, is the 15.6″ LCD screen which has a maximum resolution of 1080p and looks absolutely fantastic; very rich colours, great viewing angle and very Anti-Glare for those who hate sheen and screen glare from sunlight!  Also included is a free subscription to XSplit Gamecaster which allows gamers to stream their gaming experience to the world; use the webcam to fully immerse yourself, or if you are like me, humiliate yourself even further!

MSI laptops are PC computers known for gaming and their red, black and silver design. They are made by Micro-Star International, a Taiwanese multinational information technology company based out of New Taipei City, Taiwan. The company has a presence in over 120 countries including the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) and Asia Pacific.

Originally MSI started manufacturing motherboards and graphics cards in 1986 and that is what they were known for. They added a variety of products through the years and in 2008, they added their gaming series of products including laptops. In 2015, they created an eye-tracking gaming laptop along with the company Tobii. And in 2018, they expanded their line of laptops into content creation.

PC Gamer named their best gaming laptops for 2020. The best according to PC Gamer are MSI GS65 Stealth Thin,  MSI GT75 Titan and MSI GE63 Raider RGB. They note that the Stealth Thin uses Nvidia’s Max-Q technology, has a slim chassis and weighs less than five pounds. While the larger Titan is great at multitasking and can record, stream and edit and uses the GTX and RTX graphics.

Whether it"s lack of space or just no need for a hulking PC, gaming laptops do offer a compact and easy way to play PC games. Yes, in performance terms they offer far less bang per buck than a gaming PC but that"s the downside of miniaturisation. The plus side is that you get a 1080p-capable portable gaming system that"s smaller than a shoebox. 2015 looks set to be an interesting year for gaming laptops too and one of the first off the mark is MSI with its new mid-range gaming laptop, the GE62 2QE Apache.

Intel"s Broadwell CPUs are gradually starting to trickle into the latest laptops but plenty of manufacturers are launching their new models with Haswell-based chips and MSI is no exception. Under the hood of the Apache is a Core i7-4720HQ; unlike some of its lower power Core i7 siblings, it offers four physical cores and, with hyper-threading thrown in too, there are an additional four logical cores. The 47 watt TDP here is considerably higher than, say, a Core i7-4500U, which sits at just 15W, so battery life will unlikely be a strong point but on the plus side, this is going to offer considerably more performance and not just for games.

Coupled with the CPU is a single 8GB module of DDR3 1,600MHz memory (upgradable to 16GB) and for storage the Apache uses a single Toshiba THNSNJ128G8NU M.2 SSD alongside a 7,200rpm 1TB hard disk, although with three M.2 ports in total, there are options for what MSI calls Super RAID 2 with arrays up to 768GB available. Given the price, we"d argue a 500GB SSD might be a better option although the 1TB of storage will likely appeal to those looking for a desktop replacement rather than just a casual, portable gaming system.

As this is first and foremost a gaming laptop, you"d expect to see a half-decent GPU and MSI has opted for an Nvidia GeForce GTX965M, which uses the second generation Maxwell architecture, specifically the GM204 core, which is used in various configurations in the GTX 980, and GTX 970, as well as their mobile counterparts. Its specs are actually most similar to the dekstop GTX 960, which uses the GM206 core, because for the GTX 965M the GM204 GPU has been cut down to a 128-bit interface and 1,024 stream processors. This doesn"t seem like a lot, especially compared to some previous Kepler-based GPUs, but if you"ve been following the desktop graphics scene, you"ll know that the Maxwell architecture is also very efficient, even if it means there hasn"t always been a huge leap forwards in performance. The GTX 965M also offers the same 2GB of GDDR5 as the GTX 960, has a default GPU clock speed of 924MHz and a memory speed of 1.25GHz (5GHz effective), giving it a total memory bandwidth of 80GB/sec.

Despite its relatively light weight of 2.4kg and short height of 27mm for a 15.6in gaming laptop, MSI has managed to squeeze in an optical drive in the form of a Hitachi GU90N DVD Writer. Networking is catered for using a Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet port in much the same manner to MSI"s desktop motherboards, although rather than opting for a similar effort for the WiFi, it"s chosen Intel"s Wireless-AC 3160 WiFi module.

The screen is your standard 15.6in affair, using a Samsung PLS offering, with the technology claiming to offer advantages over IPS technology such as enhanced viewing angles and brightness as well as better image quality. We can certainly agree on the viewing angles, not that IPS screens are poor here but what the Apache offers is impressive. The colours were particularly balanced and punchy out of the box with little need for fine tuning and the anti-glare coating means that the laptop is usable outside or near windows too, with reflections kept to a minimum.
