Screen burn, also called screen burn-in, ghost image, or display burns are images or icons that are displayed on a screen when they should not be there. Screen burn comes on gradually and gets worse over time and is most common on OLED screens. The navigation bar, the top status bar, or home screen apps are frequent images that get “burned” into the display.
1. You aren’t looking at your phone screen with a white display. Screen burn is easiest to notice on an all-white or blank screen with no icons on it. And it is rare that your phone will display an all-white screen. 2. You do not change your home screen layout or background image. You look at the same phone, with the same background every day, and can’t notice the screen burn because the icons and apps on the phone are always in the same position. It is much easier to notice screen burn when you shift the layout of icons and apps on your home screen.
Here’s an example we think relates to screen burn to help explain why it’s not as noticeable: when you see a person every day that is losing weight you don’t notice how much weight they lost, but if you saw a person you haven’t seen in over a year that lost 50 pounds you would notice right away. In the same way, your eyes and mind adjust to the screen burn as it gradually burns into the display over months or years.
Screen burn is caused by pixels displaying the same image or icon for an extended period of time. Static images such as apps, navigation bars, and keyboards can deteriorate pixels in the display from overuse. This causes these over-used pixels to look darker in color than others around them. Certain areas of the screen like status bars are more susceptible to screen burn as they are constantly displaying the same image.
As you can tell from the photos, screen burn can make the display look discolored with darker pink or gray hues. Because of its gradual onset, many users don’t even realize their display has screen burn. If you would like to check for screen burn on your phone, put your phone on a white screen. A white screen will provide contrast making the discolored pixels more noticeable.
You can avoid the deterioration of pixels by changing the image that your device displays. Try to change the positions of apps and backgrounds periodically.
Lowering the brightness will lengthen the life of the pixels in your display. Keeping the brightness as low as possible will ensure that screen burn won’t happen as quickly.
Avoid screen savers when your screen times out as they are generally static images that are displayed for a long period of time. Screen savers will cause the pixels of your display to be overworked when you are not even using your device. If you have a phone that uses always on display, make sure to turn this off to prolong the life of your screen’s pixels.
There are some apps and videos out there that claim they can fix screen burn, however, the results tend to be insignificant as it is a hardware issue of the display. The only way to truly fix screen burn is to replace the entire display of the phone. If you’re like us, you’ve probably fiddled with screens and monitors since you were young. From cathode-ray tubes (CRT) in the ’80s to liquid crystal displays (LCD) and plasma display panels (PDP) in the ’90s and 2000s, we’ve all been deathly scared of our devices developing a screen burn or worse, a dead pixel. As phone manufacturers are slowly switching from LCDs to active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays, the fear of burn-ins continues. In this article, we’ll explain the differences between OLEDs and LCDs, how screen burn-in affects them, and what you can do to prevent it.
The lucky majority have probably never had the experience of having a screen burn-in with any of their screens. For the unlucky few that have, screen burns are the worst thing you can have from an actual dead screen.
First off, what is a screen burn-in? Burn-in is a term that originally came from old CRT screens. Due to being made out of phosphor compounds, continued and prolonged display of images or similar-looking programs would cause it to slowly degrade. This degradation would cause the screen to display an uneven image quality or, at worst, have an imprint or “ghost image” burnt onto the screen.
The “screen burn-in” term was adopted for LCD, Plasma, and OLED screens. Although things don’t actually get “burnt” since the mechanics of the newer screens are different, similar effects rarely occur.
Burn-ins are quite different from other problems users experience, like black screens on iPhones and cracked screens on iPads. Both problems, though, may be a result of physical or water damage that could also result in burn-ins.
Before we go on with methods to prevent and “cure” burn-ins on modern screens, we have to explain the difference between image retention and burn-ins for modern LCD and OLED screens since some use them as similes. Simply put, the main difference is that image retention is temporary while screen burn-ins are permanent.
A good analogy for image retention would be when you look at a very bright light source for a second or two, and your vision is partly white but goes back to normal after a few seconds. Comparatively, burn-ins are like when you accidentally shine a strong laser into your eye, and you end up partially blind in that eye forever.
Now that you know the difference between image retention and screen burn-in, you should also know why either of them happens on LCDs and OLED devices. Mechanically and chemically, both of them work very differently. Here’s a simple explanation of their differences.
Color LCDs do not have phosphor and are less susceptible to screen burn-ins but are more likely to have image retention. These screens are made of several layers. The main outer layer is a polarizing film, while important inner layers include the liquid crystal, electrodes, and a reflector or a backlight. “Cells” of these layers are sometimes permanently or temporarily unable to “relax” due to displaying a static image. These “unrelaxed” cells then display as discoloration or ghost images on the screen.
OLED screens, meanwhile, are made with phosphor compounds and are more likely to develop burn-ins compared to LCDs. Similar to LCDs, the smallest part of these screens is the OLED cell which consists of blue, red, and green LEDs. These three colors mix together at different luminances to give you a sharper image. Because they are used in different combinations, the three colors degrade at different rates as well.
Out of these, blue LEDs have a weaker luminosity and need to be at a higher current to keep up with the other two. This leads to older OLED screens having a greenish-red tint and burn-ins for more heavily used areas.
You now know what they are and why they happen, so what can you do to avoid and prevent burns? Fortunately, there are a lot of ways you can prevent burn-ins and keep your smartphone screen healthy. Sadly though, there aren’t really any ways to undo smartphones that have already fallen victim to screen burn-ins. Don’t despair yet, because there are ways to reduce its impact on your screen depending on how severe it is.
The lower your brightness settings, the better it is for your phone. Keeping it low lets it use less current, which lessens the load on your screen and degrades components slower.
If you’re not using your screen but have it on, it displays a static screen which is bad for your screens’ lifespan. All modern smartphones come with automatic screen off-timers that you can usually find in your phone’s settings under the “Display” tab.

A good way to remove permanent buttons on your screen is to switch to gesture navigation. This saves the parts of the screen from permanently displaying the buttons at their static spots.
It’s good to turn your phone off once in a while to let the entire device rest. This is also a good idea when you’re charging the phone as ithelps your battery have a healthy lifespan.
Although there aren’t a lot of methods to really “fix” a severe screen burn-in, lighter problems could be solved by these few options. Be warned that the second and third options may wear down other parts of your screen to “correct” and “balance” it with the burn-in.
There’s a chance that if you let your phone rest for a few hours, it may lessen the impact of screen burn-in. This change may be due to your burn-ins being long-lasting image retention instead. Turning off your phone also works for LCD screens. This works because a powered-down phone may help in “relaxing” its cells.
If the first one doesn’t work for you, you should try one of the screen corrector apps available. As mentioned earlier, burn-in is generally an unfixable issue. However, there are some instances when you can still salvage the remaining capabilities of your TV. The following are methods on how to fix screen burn-in on your TV:
In most cases, burn-in can disappear after a few hours with the TV brightness set to “low.” However, this method may not be as effective for more severe cases.
This tech moves the images on your screen to occupy various pixels, making your pixel usage more even. Most TVs will have pixel shift enabled out-of-the-box. If that’s not the case with your TV, you should be able to manually activate pixel shift via your TV’s Settings menu.
For most displays, running a colorful video for a few minutes to an hour on-screen can help remove burn-in. You can find a dozen of these videos on YouTube or other media services. Choose one and let it play on your TV for a couple of minutes and see the results.
Plasma TVs don’t need as many colors to remove screen burn-in. A simple static white screen should be able to remove burn-in and image retention during less severe cases.
In cases where repair is no longer possible, you’re only really left with one more option: replacement. Check your TV warranty to see if it covers replacement for pre-mature burn-in. If not, you’ll have to take a trip to your local TV store and buy a new set.
Nobody should ever suffer the annoyance of screen burn-in. The following tips should be able to help you avoid screen burn-in and image retention on your TVs:

While most modern TVs are less likely to experience burn-in, there are still instances where it can happen. The only two technologies currently at lower risk of burn-ins: DLPs and QLEDs.

These unpleasant discolorations are known as screen burn-in. In this blog post, we will discuss how to prevent and recover from LCD monitor screen burn-in.
LCD display burn-in, also known as ghost image or image sticking, is the retention of the previous image on the screen even after you’ve swiped the screen. LCD burn-in happens on an LCD screen when pixels cannot return to their relaxed condition after a static image shows on the screen for an extended period.
Technically, these are two different things. Image retention occurs when your display swiftly shifts from one image to another. For example, image retention occurs when you briefly notice the “shadow” of the first image in the second.
LCD monitor screen burn-in is the permanent version of image retention. Screen burn-in occurs when an image is shown on a screen for so long that it may still be seen after the screen is off. LCD burn-in happens when some sub-pixels have remained so brilliant for a very long time that they are unable to go back to their initial state. They always produce a “ghost” image because they are inherently “stuck” in a non-neutral state.
When pixels stay in the same place for an excessively long time before switching to another position for a brief period, this can lead to LCD monitor burn-in. In addition, when an image is displayed on a screen excessively, the liquid crystal material in the LCD panel becomes polarized. As a result, it develops into a permanent discoloration known as LCD display burn-in.
Image persistence on LCD screens is avoidable and can be corrected. There are several ways to prevent or repair screen burn-in in LCD monitors, which include the following:

There are plenty of new and confusing terms facing TV shoppers today, but when it comes down to the screen technology itself, there are only two: Nearly every TV sold today is either LCD or OLED.
The biggest between the two is in how they work. With OLED, each pixel provides its own illumination so there"s no separate backlight. With an LCD TV, all of the pixels are illuminated by an LED backlight. That difference leads to all kinds of picture quality effects, some of which favor LCD, but most of which benefit OLED.
LCDs are made by a number of companies across Asia. All current OLED TVs are built by LG Display, though companies like Sony and Vizio buy OLED panels from LG and then use their own electronics and aesthetic design.
So which one is better? Read on for their strengths and weaknesses. In general we"ll be comparing OLED to the best (read: most expensive) LCD has to offer, mainly because there"s no such thing as a cheap OLED TV (yet).
Take this category with a grain of salt. Both TV types are very bright and can look good in even a sunny room, let alone more moderate indoor lighting situations or the dark rooms that make TV images look their best. When it comes down to it, no modern TV could ever be considered "dim."
At the other side of light output is black level, or how dark the TV can get. OLED wins here because of its ability to turn off individual pixels completely. It can produce truly perfect black.
The better LCDs have local dimming, where parts of the screen can dim independently of others. This isn"t quite as good as per-pixel control because the black areas still aren"t absolutely black, but it"s better than nothing. The best LCDs have full-array local dimming, which provides even finer control over the contrast of what"s onscreen -- but even they can suffer from "blooming," where a bright area spoils the black of an adjacent dark area.
Here"s where it comes together. Contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest and the darkest a TV can be. OLED is the winner here because it can get extremely bright, plus it can produce absolute black with no blooming. It has the best contrast ratio of any modern display.
Contrast ratio is the most important aspect of picture quality. A high contrast-ratio display will look more realistic than one with a lower contrast ratio.
One of the main downsides of LCD TVs is a change in picture quality if you sit away from dead center (as in, off to the sides). How much this matters to you certainly depends on your seating arrangement, but also on how much you love your loved ones.
A few LCDs use in-plane switching (IPS) panels, which have better off-axis picture quality than other kinds of LCDs, but don"t look as good as other LCDs straight on (primarily due to a lower contrast ratio).
OLED doesn"t have the off-axis issue LCDs have; its image looks basically the same, even from extreme angles. So if you have a wide seating area, OLED is the better option.
Nearly all current TVs are HDR compatible, but that"s not the entire story. Just because a TV claims HDR compatibility doesn"t mean it can accurately display HDR content. All OLED TVs have the dynamic range to take advantage of HDR, but lower-priced LCDs, especially those without local-dimming backlights, do not. So if you want to see HDR content it all its dynamic, vibrant beauty, go for OLED or an LCD with local dimming.
In our tests comparing the best new OLED and LCD TVs with HDR games and movies, OLED usually looks better. Its superior contrast and lack of blooming win the day despite LCD"s brightness advantage. In other words LCD TVs can get brighter, especially in full-screen bright scenes and HDR highlights, but none of them can control that illumination as precisely as an OLED TV.
The energy consumption of LCD varies depending on the backlight setting. The lower the backlight, the lower the power consumption. A basic LED LCD with its backlight set low will draw less power than OLED.
LG has said their OLED TVs have a lifespan of 100,000 hours to half brightness, a figure that"s similar to LED LCDs. Generally speaking, all modern TVs are quite reliable.
Does that mean your new LCD or OLED will last for several decades like your parent"s last CRT (like the one pictured). Probably not, but then, why would you want it to? A 42-inch flat panel cost $14,000 in the late 90"s, and now a 65-inch TV with more than 16x the resolution and a million times better contrast ratio costs $1,400. Which is to say, by the time you"ll want/need to replace it, there will be something even better than what"s available now, for less money.
OLED TVs are available in sizes from 48 to 88 inches, but LCD TVs come in smaller and larger sizes than that -- with many more choices in between -- so LCD wins. At the high end of the size scale, however, the biggest "TVs" don"t use either technology.

You can get 4K resolution, 50-inch LCDs for around $400 -- or half that on sale. It"s going to be a long time before OLEDs are that price, but they have come down considerably.

Have you ever left your TV or monitor on for days, stuck on the same image? You return to your screen, only to find an image burned into the display. No matter what you do, it won"t go away. It is a permanent image burn.
Why do monitors and TVs get image burn? Why can"t manufacturers prevent LCDs and plasma screens from a burnt image imprint? Moreover, what can you do to fix an image burn?
In some cases, you can minimize the image burn effect. In others, you can remove the image burn completely, so long as it hasn"t been burning too long.
Before flat-screens and crystal displays, most TVs and monitors featured CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) technology. In CRTs, individual pixels comprise a red, blue, and green phosphor component. Depending on the intensity of each phosphor component, the pixel appears to the human eye as a unique color.
When a particular still image remains for too long, the intensity of each phosphor component diminishes at an uneven rate. The result is a ghost image on the screen, which is known as image burning.
Plasma displays use plasma, a gaseous substance containing free-flowing ions. When the plasma is not in use, the particles in the plasma are uncharged and display nothing. With the introduction of an electric current, the ions become charged and begin colliding, releasing photons of light.
This is a very simplified version of how a plasma screen works. However, the main thing to understand is that plasma screens use phosphor material (like CRTs) to turn those photons into images.
LCD and LED do not work in the same way as CRTs, either. LCD and LED screens use backlit liquid crystals to display colors. Although manufacturers market screens using LED and LCD, an LED screen is still a type of LCD. The white backlight filters through the liquid crystals, which extract particular colors per pixel.
LCD and LED displays don"t suffer from the same type of image burn as CRTs and plasma screens. They"re not completely clear, though. LCD and LED screens suffer from image persistence. Read on to find out more about image persistence.
Before you can fix screen burn-in, take a second to understand why these images burn in the first place. LCDs and LEDs don"t suffer from burn-in as seriously as plasma screens. But static images can leave an imprint on both display types if left alone for too long. So, why does image burn happen?
First, let"s tackle plasma screen burn-in. Remember why CRTs experience image burn? When a still image remains on the screen for too long, the phosphor components in each pixel wear out at different rates. The uneven burn rates leave behind a ghost image, forever etched into the screen.
Plasma screens also suffer from phosphor deterioration. Plasma burning occurs when pixels on the screen are damaged through long exposure. The phosphor loses its intensity and only shows the light it was fed repeatedly. In this case, the still image, which causes the burn.
LCD and LED screens can also experience image burn, though the image burn process can take longer to develop into a permanent issue. In addition, LCD and LED screens suffer from another issue, known as image retention (also known as image persistence or an LCD shadow).
Image retention is a temporary issue that you are more likely to notice before it becomes a permanent issue. However, proper image burn can still affect LCD, LED, and OLED screens.
Image retention is a different issue from image burn (although it is a precursor to image burn). For example, you"re using an image of a steam train as a reference point for a drawing. You have the steam train image on your screen for a few hours before you decide to play a video game instead.
When you load up the video game on the screen, you can still see the faint outline of the steam train on the screen. The steam train image will remain for a short while, but the movement and color changes of the video game (or film, TV show, or other media type) should erase the retained image.
The other thing to consider is that LED and OLED image burn-in, when it happens, is irreversible. That"s because of how LED and OLED screens work. Individual pixels within an LED display decay when they emit light.
Under normal use, an LED, OLED, or QLED screen won"t suffer image burn. However, if you leave your screen on a single channel for hours every day, then burn-in can become an issue, as it would with almost any screen.
Issues arise when a screen shows a single news channel 24 hours a day, every day, causing channel logos to burn-in, along with the outline of the scrolling news ticker and so on. News channels are a well-known source of television burn-in, no matter the screen type.
Image burn-in fixes exist for LCD and plasma screens. How effective an image burn-in fix is depends on the screen damage. Depending on the length and severity of the image burn, some displays may have permanent damage.
The best fix for screen burn is to prevent it in the first place. Okay, that isn"t super useful if your screen is already experiencing image burn. However, you should always try not to leave your screen on a still image for too long. The time it takes for an image to burn-in varies from screen to screen, between manufacturers, sizes, and panel type.
My personal rule of thumb is to turn off the display if I plan on being away for more than 15 minutes. That way, it is difficult to get caught out, plus you save yourself money on electricity costs and monitor or TV wear and tear.
Another prevention method is to reduce screen contrast as much as you can. Unfortunately, most screens aren"t calibrated correctly, often pushing the contrast and brightness settings too high.
Lower contrast means the lighting across your screen is more even. This means less strain on specific areas of the screen, which helps protect against image burning.
If your plasma or LCD screen already has image burn-in, you can try turning on white static for 12 to 24 hours. The constant moving of white-and-black across your screen in random patterns can help remove the ghost image from your screen.
Unfortunately, this won"t work for extreme cases. Some TVs will have a built-in pattern swiping option that basically accomplishes the same thing (filling your screen with random patterns).
Pixel-shift constantly slightly adjusts the image on your screen, which varies the pixel usage to counteract image burn. You might have to enable a pixel or screen shift option in your screen settings. Pixel-shift is a handy feature for LED and OLED screens that cannot recover from image burn and should help counteract an LCD shadow.
Other modern screens feature built-in screen refresh functions that the manufacturer will advise using to remove image retention and image burn issues.
The best tool for fixing ghost images is JScreenFix. The original program helps fix monitors with dead pixels, but the same company also released an "advanced" version of the tool, known as JScreenFix Deluxe.
While the Deluxe version uses advanced algorithms to repair burned screens and prolong plasma and LCD longevity, the official site is no longer up and running, and there is no way to download the full version officially.
You can find the free version of the Deluxe app online, but it is limited to 20 minutes running at a time. Furthermore, we"re not going to link out to the versions you can find online as we cannot verify the security of these installations. If you do use the Deluxe version, you do so at your own risk.
Another option is to set a completely white desktop background and leaving to run for a few hours. The solid color might reset the image burn. A solid color background is more likely to help with image persistence than image burn, but it is still worth trying.
If you have television burn-in, you can attach a laptop to your TV using an HDMI cable, extend your desktop to the television, and share the white screensaver. Hopefully, that will shift your television burn-in.

Even though some say the picture quality of an LED TV is better, there is no straight answer for which has better picture quality since both TVs use the same kind of screen. If you"ve been researching the best TVs on the market with a focus on the best OLED TVs, you may have noticed a trend regarding the risk of OLED burn-in. Historically regarded as a major problem for such screens, OLED burn-in – also known as image retention – sounds incredibly off-putting if you"re looking to buy a high-end TV.
Burn-in is when an image or sequence is played so often and continuously on your TV that it leaves a permanent mark on the panel, ruining the look of anything else you may end up watching.
But is it actually a problem? Many manufacturers including LG explain that "it is rare for an average TV consumer to create an environment that could result in burn-in"(opens in new tab) but the worry is still there when a quick Google can still bring up plenty of not so positive anecdotes regarding the issue.
We"ve taken a deeper look at the history behind burn-in and image retention and looked at whether it"s still an issue for the average user, and whether it"s a risk worth taking at all.
Screen burn-in isn"t a new phenomenon. It"s been around for as long as screens have existed with even the old-fashioned CRT-type computer monitors potentially suffering from permanent ghost-like images after spending too long displaying the same image. Such issues are what led to the rise of the screensaver – a mainstay of computer screens to this day.
Following that came plasma displays, which were highly susceptible to burn-ins at a time when LCD-based displays were less likely to suffer from the issue. However, LCD screens were more liable to have pixels fail or become "stuck" causing a different type of issue for regular TV watchers.
TV manufacturers have been keen to ensure that people still want to buy OLED TVs and don"t worry about burn-in. LG has a whole section on its website explaining its approach to OLED TV reliability(opens in new tab) reassuring customers that it really isn"t an issue.
LG explains that it has a screen saver feature on all its TVs that turns on automatically if the TV detects that a static image is displayed for approximately two minutes. There"s also the Clear Panel Noise feature that preserves the quality of the image on he display panel by resetting the TV so that it clears pixels, and there"s Logo Luminance Adjustment which can detect static logos on screen and reduce brightness to help decrease the risk of image retention.
Other types of screens are also embracing OLED with Nintendo launching the Nintendo Switch OLED later this year. We talked to an expert in the field – OTI Lumionics CEO Michael Helander – about what that would mean in terms of image burn-in and he was unphased by any potential issues. "Modern OLED display panels have active compensation that will prevent the effect of burn-in. This records how much time each pixel has been turned on individually and will then in the back-end hardware adjust the output signal [...] to ensure that screen output remains uniform and effect of burn-in is eliminated," he explained.
He also referenced that the PS Vita also offered an OLED panel in the past and there were few complaints regarding any burn-in back then – and that continues to be the case. The PS Vita is an ageing console that used an older form of OLED than we’re seeing now, so the latest OLED panels should be even more reliable.
And what if you do run into an issue? Warranty policies are a little vague as to whether you"re covered. While LG OLED TVs have a 5 year warranty for panel faults(opens in new tab), a spokesperson for LG pointed out recently that image retention "is not a product defect" but doesn"t quite allude to whether that includes permanent screen burn-in, referring instead to it being a rare issue. You may have a fight on your hands if you"re one of the unlucky ones as it"s often considered to be general wear and tear.
Not really. Screen burn-in is most likely to happen on display units in showrooms of retail stores, or if you watch the same static image all the time.
Granted, that could be a minor issue if you watch a lot of rolling news or sport and there"s a ticker always on display, but technology like Screen Shift should circumvent that issue quite easily. Crucially, it should take so long for it to be a noticeable issue that you"ll end up upgrading your TV long before it becomes a problem. One study by LG believes that the expected life of an OLED display is about 100,000 hours of use, in comparison to LCD panels with LED backlights that have a life expectancy of six to 10 years.
However, you should be aware of temporary image retention issues. This isn"t a permanent problem but you may notice it once in a while. It"s likely that it"ll go away on its own rather than turn into permanent burn-in. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to fix this and to avoid image retention or the risk of burn-in in future too.
The best way to avoid burn-in is to keep watching varied content. Don"t leave your TV on the same image all the time and definitely don"t leave anything paused for hours on end. It should take a huge number of hours to become a problem but you may end up with some temporary image retention issues and a bit of paranoia that you"ve messed up.
Alternatively, turn the brightness down or choose a dimmer picture mode from your TV"s options such as Cinema instead of Vivid. You don"t need to do this all the time, though – only if you"re playing the same game for hours on end or watching rolling news for most of the day.

One of the biggest things that can affect the value of your phone, besides its cosmetic condition is the battery. Nobody wants to buy a phone that does not last more than a few hours between charges and find themselves frequently tied to a wall socket. As a result, companies that buy phones to refurbish and resell will always test the health of your battery and will likely offer you less if your battery is found to be in poor condition.
It is much more difficult to swap the battery in your phone than it is to handle it properly in the first place. To use an old adage, prevention is better than cure. Most modern devices do not allow users to easily access their batteries as they are sealed units. This also means if you want to replace a battery you would need to use a professional service.
Before we go into details about how to keep your battery at its best, we will look at a few common myths and misconceptions about batteries. Some of these you may have heard or believe yourself, and it is important to separate fact from fiction.
This belief stems from a time when the most common type of rechargeable batteries in mobile devices were Nickel Metal Hydride (NiHM) batteries. Early versions of these batteries had a ?memory effect?. What this meant was that if you did not fully drain the battery before recharging it, and did not then charge it fully, the battery would ?remember? this smaller capacity and not charge properly beyond it. A trick people used to use was to put the battery in the fridge to reset its memory.
These days the battery technology found in mobile phones is Lithium Ion or Li-Ion, and more recently Lithium Polymer. These technologies do not suffer from the memory effect and in fact the opposite advice is best for these batteries. Li-Ion batteries experience the most strain when they are either at 0% or 100%, meaning that it is best to keep the charge as far away from these extremes as possible. While it is not practical to keep your phone at 50% all the time, trying to keep the charge between 20% and 80% is a good way to help maintain your battery?s health.
Modern devices have smart battery management software as standard. When your battery gets to 100% the device will simply stop charging at full power and only trickle charge as and when the phone requires it, keeping the device at 100%. This does not mean however it is a good idea to leave your phone charging overnight as this is indeed bad for your phone, but not for the reasons just stated. We will explain more later.
The reason behind this is a simple case of money. Manufacturers want you to buy their official products as the additional sales lead to additional revenue. You should beware of cheap, poorly made chargers on Amazon or Ebay, however any charger made by a reputable company is perfectly fine to use with your device. You may find that it may not charge as fast for devices that use fast charge technologies, but as we will explain that is not necessarily a bad thing.
One important measurement you can use to determine your battery health is to check the cycle count. A ?cycle? is a discharge and charge of the battery from 0-100%. What do we mean by this? It means that any individual or combination of charges that amounts to 100% of your battery capacity counts as a cycle. Fully charged the device from 0 to 100%? That?s one cycle. Charged it from 20% to 70% (a charge increase of 50%) twice? That?s a cycle too.
Every cycle your battery goes through slightly degrades its health due to chemical and physical breakdown. Apple state for example that after 500 cycles on an iPhone that its battery is rated to have lost approximately 20% of its original capacity. This means 20% less lifespan and more frequent trips to the charger, adding more cycles more often and degrading the battery even quicker.
It is very easy to check your cycle count on an Apple device. Simply go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and you will see the number of cycles as well as the current capacity as a percentage of its original capacity.
It goes without saying then that reducing the number of cycles your battery goes through should be your aim when trying to extend the life of your battery.
One method to keep your battery in top condition is to limit the stresses on the battery as much as possible. There are many ways to do this, but we will list what are the most practical and easy to achieve. Incorporating these tips in your daily routine will give your battery the best chance at living a long, healthy life.
This might seem like a silly one but turning off your device when it is not being used is a great way to maintain the health of your battery. These days there seems to be few times when we are not glued to our phones, but one time you can guarantee several hours where your phone is not being used is when you are asleep. Turning your phone off at night will significantly reduce the drain on your battery during these hours and reduce how often you must charge it.
If turning off your phone overnight isn?t your cup of tea, consider putting it in to airplane mode instead. Turning off your data connection, Wi-Fi or other connectivity options will save on battery life while your phone is not in use. If you must put your phone away at work this is another good time to put it in airplane mode too. Your phone will simply download any sent messages when you turn airplane mode off and restore your connection, so you don?t have to worry about missing anything.
Just like people, your battery doesn?t like it if the temperatures get too low or high. Whilst they have more tolerance for cold temperatures, the heat can be a real killer. Trying to keep your phone as close to room temperature as possible will help keep your battery in peak condition. That means keeping it out of the blazing sun during summer as much as possible.
This piece of advice relates to the last. Your phone case, depending on material, can act like a jacket keeping your phone warmer that it otherwise would be. Removing the phone case whilst charging (when your phone tends to get hottest), is a good way to keep your device cool and healthy.
Manufacturers regularly release software updates for their devices. Sometimes these can be to resolve bugs that have been discovered that could shorten the lifespan of your battery or help manage your apps better so that they draw less power. Keeping your phone up to date ensures you have the latest software and in turn that your device is doing its best to keep battery usage in check.
Whilst it may be very convenient, fast charging is not good for your battery. The extra current means extra stress and higher temperatures, which as we have discussed is not good for keeping your battery working at its best. While it may be quite slow, charging your phone over USB connected to a computer is a great way to ensure a nice slow charge rate which as far as health is concerned, is the best way to charge your battery.
It might be the most convenient time for most of us but leaving your phone charging overnight can do more harm than good. As previously mentioned, this does not cause your battery to ?overcharge?, but it does maintain your battery charge at 100%. We?ve mentioned before that your battery experiences the most strain when it is at either 0% charge or 100% charge, so holding it at full charge for an extended period of time will cause unnecessary strain that in the long run will affect your battery?s health. We recommend that you charge your phone during the day in smaller and more regular sessions. Consider plugging your phone in when you?re at work, or when you?re at home watching TV. Then when it comes to bedtime, leave your phone unplugged, and if you want to save on drain put it in low power mode.
Besides maintaining the health of your phone battery, the next thing you can do to reduce how often your charge your device and so add to the cycle count, is to get as much out of your battery as possible. There are numerous ways you can extend the life of your battery between charges.
If you have ever delved into your battery usage statistics, you will have seen that the biggest source of power drain is often your screen. Modern touchscreens draw a lot of power while in use, and the brighter they are set, the greater the drain. The auto brightness function on your phone uses the light sensor to detect the ambient light levels around the phone and adjust the screen brightness accordingly, brighter in full light and dimmer when you?re somewhere dark.
Mobile phones have a multitude of connectivity options, such as Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi etc. Outside of use for Bluetooth headsets however there is probably little reason for you to have your Bluetooth on all the time. While it can be a little tedious to remember to turn your connectivity options on and off, doing so can net you additional lifetime on your battery.
Recent phones all come with either Low Power Mode (iOS) or battery saver (Android) to reduce battery usage. These modes change settings to conserve battery power and will either turn on automatically on Android devices, or prompt you to enable them in iOS. While these modes are intended to keep your low charge device running as long as possible until you can charge it, there?s no reason you can use them at other times when your battery is at optimal levels to extend your battery life.
Wi-Fi uses less power than your data connection, especially for any network speeds above 2G. Using Wi-Fi for your data is a simple way to reduce your power consumption when browsing the internet. Make sure you have it turned on for when you are at home or work if possible.
Obviously if your network connection is turned off you will be unable to receive normal telephone calls. Applications such as WhatsApp however that makes calls using data will work fine through your Wi-Fi.
Another thing that you can do to help extend your battery life between charges is to use a dark mode or dark theme on your phone. As mentioned before, your screen is one of the greatest sources of power drain when your phone is in use. With older screens, the whole screen is illuminated with a backlight to allow the screen to be visible. However, with modern OLED screens, only the parts of the screen that are active draw power, and the brightest areas draw the most power. By having a dark theme and a dark wallpaper, you can greatly reduce the power drain as the screen has to light up to full brightness less often.
Many apps also have their own themes to control their appearance, often including a dark theme you can enable specifically for the app. This includes popular apps like Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and Reddit which all have their own dark themes. Last week, a report came flying in stating that the new ‘Made by Google’ Pixel 2 XL is showing signs of screen burn-in. Although the issue isn’t something unheard of when it comes to OLED panels yet it has created a rift ever since it was spotted.
The pertinent questions we are facing are: What exactly is Screen burn-in? Why is it creating so much hype if it is not new? Should they be wary before buying a new OLED smartphone? Are there ways to prevent it?
Sometimes, frequently displayed text and images get imprinted on your display and can be continually seen no matter what content you push on the display, or in other words, they get permanently burned in on the screen. Screen Burn in is a defect that manifests as screen discoloration across any part of the panel. This can be in the form of image or text outline or fading outlines.
As for the technical definition, the Screen burn-in is an issue that occurs when the blue LEDs have lower luminous efficiency than there sibling, red and green pixels. Or in simpler words, organic LEDs (Red, green, and blue) that constitute a single pixel decay with time or with overuse and one of them doesn’t glow as brightly or accurately anymore.
In a set sized pixel, a blue pixel will require more electricity to achieve the same level of brightness as the red or green one, shortening the lifespan of blue pixel. Therefore the OLED display’s color tilts towards red and green colors, causing screen burn-in.
The term originates from the old CRT monitors. These monitors used phosphor compound which emits light to produce images that lost its luminance with time (and that’s why we had screen savers on old CRT monitors, to avoid burn in). LCD panels are also not 100% secure, but screen burn-in on LCDs are rare, partly, due to the way they are constructed.
Not as serious as the CRT panels, today’s OLED panel also suffer from a similar issue. However, the intensity or burn in is barely noticeable and usually takes a lot of time before any such error occurs. The prominent areas for screen burn-in patterns are the navigational buttons or the notification bar – places where static data is persistently pushed on the screen.
Of course, manufacturers are aware of it and they are taking viable steps to overcome it. Like Samsung, who has been the leading manufacturer of the AMOLED panels, uses pentile subpixel arrangement on the display to bring down the burn-in effect. They use larger blue subpixels in order to provide required light with less current. Driving less current means increase in lifespan of the pixel and avoiding color disorders in the long run.
The reason why it is getting so much attention now is that every smartphone maker is making a shift towards the high-tech OLED panels. This is making consumers go warry about whether or not to buy the OLED display smartphones.
To clear the dust, the issue is not as major as you think. The burn-in effect is quite rare or hard to notice unless you know what you are looking for. Also, modern OLED panels have a longer lifespan than the previous gen of OLEDs, even then the burn-ins are rare. The bottom line is, one shouldn’t hesitate to buy OLED display smartphone.
Use the phone in Immersive Mode. In this, the notification bar is hidden; thus, eliminating static icons. Or pick a launcher that offers a similar feature.
Screen burn-in and image retention are two concerns that many people have when buying a new TV. We hear lots of stories from people about which TVs we should or should not buy by armchair AV experts based on information they got from their uncle. One of the most common warnings is about which TVs can “burn-in” and which do not. There is a lot of misinformation out there and we are here to clear it up.
These are technically two different things. Screen burn-in is when an image is displayed so long on a screen that is can be seen on the screen even when the screen is off (in extreme cases) or can be seen occasionally through other images. This occurs when certain sub-pixels have been so bright for so long that they literally cannot return to their default state anymore. They are permanently “stuck” in a non-neutral state, so they will always produce a “ghost” image forever.
Image retention is when your display switches from displaying one image, to a different one quickly. If you can see the “shadow” of the first image in the second for a short while, this is image retention. Are you a news junkie or a hardcore gamer? You may have already experienced image retention. If you can see the logo of the news channel or the life bar of your character when you change channels for a little while, that was image retention.
Retention can be experienced by all screens. If you are displaying a very bright, static image for a long time and then switch to a dark image, you may see the shadow of the first image. In realistic tests, image retention is not a problem for any type of TV. In general use, image retention should be almost imperceptible to your eye.
But if you are someone that turns a TV on in the morning and leaves it on all day, you should be worried about burn-in. We know too many people that use their news channels as white noise. They never switch the channel and they almost never turn their TVs off. If that is actually the case, burn-in really shouldn’t be a problem. Everything that you are burning-in is what you are watching anyhow. In these extreme cases, the burn-in only becomes visible during the commercials.
Do you have a projector? You don’t have to worry about burn-in. Do you have an LCD television? Burn-in is practically impossible. The TV will break before you experience burn-in. So, what TVs do you need to worry about? Plasma’s and OLED’s.
One of the big knocks about Plasma displays back in the day was the claim that they were very susceptible to burn-in. With early models, this was true. The later models were much more robust. We know of many users of plasma’s that still have never experienced burn-in. As plasma TVs are no longer sold, this is a non-issue for new buyers. For people still rocking a plasma, if you haven’t experienced burn-in by now, keep doing what you are doing. You are unlikely to see burn-in on your display.
Early OLED models were susceptible to burn-in. Newer models are much more robust. Does this sound familiar? Much of the screen burn-in rhetoric comes from the LCD camp. They are looking for reasons for you to buy an LCD when OLEDs look better and are becoming more and more competitive in prices. But, it is true that OLEDs can burn-in. If you abuse your OLED, you can experience screen burn-in and longer-term image retention. So, how can you stop it?
The basic cause of burn-in and image retention is NOT watching the same channel too much. The real reason is improper settings. If your backlight and contrast are set too high, your TV will be much more in danger of burning-in. Manufacturers are building in protections for their displays. For example, LG has a “Logo Detection” setting. If it senses that part of the image – like a channel logo – hasn’t changed at all for a few minutes, it will dim that portion of the screen, and eventually the entire screen to reduce the chances of burn-in. Let’s discuss what you can do to protect your display.
There are a lot of steps you can take to ensure that your display will not experience burn-in. The first, and easiest, is to NOT abuse your display. Don’t have it on the same channel for 13 hours a day, every day. That alone will ensure you never experience burn-in. But there are a few additional steps you can take:
The first thing you’ll want to do after plugging in your display is to change the settings. This isn’t just for OLEDs, this is for EVERY display. While you can find specific settings for your specific display online, in general, you’ll want to switch it off the default video mode. Often called “vivid” or something similar, this mode is to make the display look good on the showroom floor. You’ll want to look for something that looks like “cinema” or “theater” or “dark” mode. These will lower the backlight and contrast to more reasonable levels. With most displays, this is all you’ll have to do. You should do a quick search for your specific display to see if there are other recommendations. In particular, you’ll want to search for “backlight setting” for your display (LG calls this OLED Light). Many manufacturers set this too high even in the cinema picture mode. On LG OLEDs for example, we recommend no higher than 40. Again, models differ from year to year so double-check.
OLEDs now have “Pixel Shift” options. Some have more than one. You’ll have to consult your manual to see exactly how they are implemented on your display but the general idea is to slightly move the image around the screen to avoid burn-in. With smaller images, this can help. Larger logos or health bars in games are less likely to be affected. There is no evidence that using these options harms your TV in any way. You should
