We"re somewhat skeptical about how well the 3,211-pound Dart will handle with a 1.4-liter engine, since the Fiat 500 weighs nearly 1,000 fewer pounds and still feels underpowered, but the R/T might be interesting.
As far as options are concerned, there"s no indication that Chrysler"s bringing back the "Swinger" nomenclature, but it sounds like the Dart will be well equipped. Buyers can order a Uconnect infotainment system or a heated steering wheel if they"re so inclined.
Our favorite feature is a user-customizable gauge cluster. Where other manufacturers have squandered their digital dashboards, forcing them to permanently mimic analog clusters, Dodge is offering a TFT panel that can display one of either two digital or two analog gauge designs, plus other functions depending on what the driver wants to see.

It"s a very different car on the outside though, looking more like a scaled-down Charger than an Italian hatchback, and much more of a successor to the popular Neon than Dodge could deliver under Daimler ownership. The Dart has an aggressive snout with the familiar Dodge crosshairs, and the rear lights echo those you"ll see on the Charger. The cab-forward profile has strong links to the Neon.
The Dart"s mid-range engine is the same 1.4-liter, four-cylinder, "MultiAir" engine you"ll find in Alfa"s finest. The small capacity suggests small performance, but with a turbocharger and clever induction technology, the MultiAir puts out 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Not only will this provide sprightly performance, but a 40mpg highway rating is also on the cards, matching Dodge"s rivals.
Also powering the Dart will be an entry-level 160-horsepower, 145 lb-ft 2.0-liter and a 2.4-liter, 184-horsepower four-cylinder. Both get a new name - Tiger Shark - but they"re essentially re-worked versions of the engines found in the Caliber. Both are now more fuel-efficient, and the 2.4-liter also gets Fiat"s clever MultiAir technology.
This is one well-specified compact. Ten airbags are standard in the Dart, as are a backup camera, parking assist, hill-start assist, rainy brake support and brake assist. Blind-spot monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection are optional.
The Dart also gets keyless entry, LED tail-lamps, a reconfigurable TFT display and a heated steering wheel for those chilly mornings. A vast range of trim levels and option packages will also be available.

We were informed that some minor animations do occur when directions appear on the display, but a Dodge representative reassured us that the company has tested the system to ensure that drivers won"t be distracted (changing display presets is disabled altogether while the car is in motion). The 2013 Dart will be released later this year at a starting price of $15,995; there"s no word yet on when the new dashboard will be making its way to other Dodge vehicles.

It was announced by Dodge on July 11, 2013 that multiple 2013 Dodge Darts have been recalled due to errors in the engine that could cause majot problems to other parts of the car. The engine fix is free.

On January 27, 2016, Fiat Chrysler announced that it will end production of the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 due to the company"s decision to redirect its energies towards building Crossover vehicles. It’s your choice, of course, but somewhere between $18,000 and $25,000 you’re at the base price of a small front-drive car that will make you want to get up in the morning and go—and perhaps even grin. The source of that grin could be a Honda Fit Sport, a Fiat 500 Abarth, a Ford Focus ST, or the iconic Volkswagen GTI. If Dodge has its way, it could be the Dart GT.
New for 2013, the GT joins the Dart SE, SXT, Rallye, Aero, and Limited models, sitting atop the price structure at $21,790. And for that money, what does GT get you?
To start, there’s the 2.4-liter version of the Tigershark MultiAir four-cylinder producing 184 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. This mill is matched to a six-speed manual, with the (Hyundai-sourced) PowerTech 6F24 six-speed automatic available as an option. Twin exhaust outlets reside out back. Almost as a teaser, Dodge mentions that it “continues to investigate a high-performance R/T model.” There’s speculation that such a car could be powered by the turbocharged Tigershark 2.4. As far as a real ST/GTI fighter we’re still waiting.
But back to the GT. Dodge seems to have put a bit more Alfa Romeo back in the Dart’s Giulietta-inspired suspension with its front struts and independent rear layout, adding frequency-sensing shocks. The GT rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels, which aren’t available to the rest of the Dart lineup.
As is the case with seemingly all of Chrysler Group’s sportier packages and trim levels, the Dart GT is set off with dark accents: Hyper Black dims the grille, while black headlamp bezels and trim are added. Further details include body-color door handles, LED taillights and, of course, GT badging.
The GT’s insides get unique Nappa leather seats done in two variations of black and—red alert, Wizard of Oz fans—Ruby Red. Both the front seats and the steering wheel are heated and red detailing features across the dash and on the door handles. Chrysler’s ubiquitous 8.4-inch touch screen resides in the center of that red-trimmed dash, and the centerpiece of the car’s gauge cluster is a seven-inch TFT display. The options sheet for the GT is limited to a sunroof, HID headlamps, navigation, pushbutton start, rain-sensing windshield wipers, blind-spot monitoring, and a 506-watt, 10-speaker Alpine audio system.

Considering the buzz Dodge has generated in recent years by mining its past with models like the Challenger and Charger, the return of the Dart name is no shock. (We’re hoping Polara is next.) It will serve duty on the automaker’s newest compact model. Ensuring that the modern Dart’s Dodge-ness remains fully intact are recent key exterior-design elements—full-width taillamps, a chunky mini “flying buttress” C-pillar, and a split-crosshair grille.
But the Dart will need more than an old name and a familial resemblance to make its mark: While Chrysler was biding its time in killing off this car’s predecessor, the awful Dodge Caliber, a bevy of refined competitors like the Chevrolet Cruze and the multiple-comparo-winning Ford Focus have launched and raised expectations for the compact-car class.
The first Chrysler vehicle to be based on Fiat Group architecture, the front-wheel-drive Dart utilizes lengthened and widened Alfa Romeo Giulietta underpinnings; they’re referred to internally as the “Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-Wide)” platform. The proper ’Merican-sized architecture features MacPherson struts up front (specifically tuned, Dodge says, to minimize camber loss for more responsive steering) and an independent suspension in the rear. Both front and rear suspension cradles are of a high-pressure, die-cast aluminum construction. The Dart, which is to be offered only as a sedan, rides on a 106.4-inch wheelbase and is 183.9 inches long and 72.0 inches wide.
Both the 1.4- and the 2.4-liter powerplants employ MultiAir technology, although the latter features the slightly revised MultiAir 2 system. MultiAir 2 is said to offer more efficient exhaust-gas recirculation by more precisely controlling the start and end of the valve events and extending the opening on the intake cycle. Darts equipped with the 1.4-liter turbo will have just one intercooler, as opposed to the two tinier units found in the Fiat 500 Abarth.
The all-aluminum 2.0-liter is standard and the iron-block/aluminum-head 1.4-liter turbo is optional on the Dart SE, SXT, Rallye, and Limited models. The late-arriving, all-aluminum 2.4-liter will be exclusive to the R/T. All are to be built at the GEMA engine plant in Dundee, Michigan. Fuel-economy ratings have not been released.
Dodge claims to have spent more than 600 hours in the wind tunnel pursuing aerodynamic brilliance; one available technology that will help is a wind-cheating grille shutter-system that opens and closes automatically based upon vehicle speed and engine-coolant temperature. Underneath, composite panels pull double duty on the underbody, smoothing out airflow and reducing road noise. Up top, the Dart benefits from a laser-brazed roof seam, an assembly process that eliminates the need for traditional roof-ditch moldings. This allows for a cleaner profile, reduced interior resonance, and is claimed to further help aero.
Twelve exterior colors will be available, including a few of the wackier Dodge finishes, including “Header Orange” and “Citrus Peel,” ensuring that Mopar buffs on a budget—the car will start at $15,995, excluding a few hundred dollars for destination and delivery—will have no trouble finding an appropriate hue for their sensible transport.
Inside, drivers will be able to focus their eyeballs on no less than 14 interior and trim color options. Soft-touch materials and ambient interior lighting are said to offer an upscale feel. A variety of technology and luxury gizmos include an 8.4-inch UConnect Touch Media Center with voice recognition, an Alpine audio system, a full-color seven-inch TFT instrument cluster (the tach and speedo are analog), keyless entry and start, and a heated steering wheel.
With roughly 15 percent of the new-car market consisting of compact sedans, it’s vital that the Dart captures at least a small portion of these shoppers and turns them into devoted return customers. Brand loyalty often begins in the compact segment, a fact not lost on Dodge parent Chrysler, which hasn’t offered a sedan in this class for nearly seven years. Seven years is a long time—whether it’s long enough for consumers to forget the Neon remains to be seen.

Neon, and Team Pentastar appears to be going all out. We were especially interested in getting a first-hand look at the automaker"s new infotainment system, and its interesting take on a next-generation instrument panel. The gauge cluster is powered by a seven-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display that enables the driver to customize the interface to his or her desire, and appears to be simple and intuitive to operate.

The Dart is a compact car, but let that not mar your enthusiasm. It is engineered without compromise and never boring, while helping to reach your destination smartly. Though compact, this little gem has the same DNA that birthed Challenger and Charger.
The new 184-bhp, 2.4L Tigershark engine with a 6-speed Powertech automatic transmission hauls butt with no apologies. Dart averages 27 mpg, 35 on the highway.
Up front, the split-crosshair grille and fierce looking fenders highlight its “full-width mask treatment” and low slung stance. All those come together to make a premium appearance. Dodge engineers developed a sleek, laser-brazed hood that eliminated upper ditch molding. My favorite outside feature was the class-exclusive full-width racetrack tail lamps. Their beams announce a powerful statement with 152 LED lights, while the integrated dual exhaust (class exclusive) backs it up.
Dart has a Utopian flavoring inside for a compact car. There is an abundance of interior volume and adequate utility space. You and your passengers and all their stuff will have plenty of room. The oversized glove box is deep enough to secure a laptop while door storage pockets are deep and easily accessible. There is a small trough near the gear shift for holding keys or a phone. Plus there are two cup holders. The saddle cubbies on the side are perfect for hand held devices.
There is a 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) reconfigurable digital gauge cluster with tachometer. This compliments the 8.4-inch touch screen display that commands the Uconnect infotainment system with AM/FM/navigation. There is one year of free Sirius XM satellite radio subscription.
Dart has five trims with the Limited being the most comfortable and technologically laden. The SE ($15,995) is an entry level vehicle. Even though the SE doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, it does have all the Dodge Dart’s easy handling characteristics, and a spinster’s habits when it comes to the gas pump. Keep in mind that Dodge is the fastest growing auto manufacturer in the U.S.
All trims will be fun to drive and come with an attitude. You will never feel “trapped” as the driver because of limited space. In fact, Dart has some of the size and personality of a mid-size sedan.

The 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) begins in Detroit today with local and global automakers lining up their latest offerings. After a fantastic double-digit growth rate in 2012, the US market is back on the radar of global automakers, as reflected by the luxury and more powerful products on display. As expected, the American automakers – General Motors (GM), Ford and Chrysler – are at the forefront of the show with their latest offerings but global OEMs too are not far behind.
Prominent among other automakers displaying their latest offerings are Volkswagen (VW), Nissan, Toyota and Hyundai. VW will use the show to mark North American debut of the Audi RS5 Cabriolet and R8 facelift which are scheduled to go on sale in the US this spring. In addition, a high performance version of the Q5 SUV will also be showcased, reflecting the growing popularity of such vehicles in the market. The model features a more powerful version of Audi"s 3.0-litre supercharged V-6 engine that is already used in the S4 and S5 models. For the mass market, VW plans to display a seven-seat SUV, based on the versatile MBQ platform. The three-row vehicle remains unnamed yet but will be positioned below the Touareg. Just ahead of the show, Nissan teased some images of its Resonance concept vehicle which will be officially unveiled on the second press day at the show. The vehicle is likely to replace the Murano and will be produced in the US. Along with the Resonance, the Versa Note mini-MPV will also find a place on Nissan stand.
To be displayed at the show is also Toyota"s next-generation Lexus IS (Intelligent Sport) which will make its world premiere at the Cobo Centre. The entry level luxury
Automakers" confidence regarding the prospects in the US market is visible in the large number of performance vehicles and pickups on display. Full-size trucks, which were not seen last year, seem to have made a comeback, with the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Ram 3500. With Ford announcing its intention to reveal a surprise product in the category, the competition is all American. Large vehicles, such as the one VW is planning to display, will also make a splash at the show. VW"s move appears to be a calculated step, considering that platform sharing and local production of the SUV are likely to drive significant cost savings, allowing the company to price the model aggressively and well-below the Touareg.
