If you"re old enough to remember the Carter administration, the name may be familiar but that means you"re beyond the target demographics for the Dart revival. A fixture at the entry end of the Dodge lineup from 1960 through 1976, the Dart was discontinued in 1977 and its badge went into mothballs, forgotten, but obviously not gone. Now it"s been resuscitated, and affixed to this all-new line of compact sedans.

So the name is the same, and the new 2013 Dodge Dart occupies the same position in the Dodge passenger car hierarchy as the original. But the similarities end right there. The first car to incorporate engineering elements from corporate parent Fiat, the revival Dart is a contemporary front-drive compact facing a considerably stronger competitive environment than its 20th century namesake. Dodge has released teaser images of the 2013 Dodge Dart interior, showing the dashboard layout and centre fascia. The Dart will be the first vehicle built under the Fiat-Chrysler partnership, and shares its platform with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Behind the steering wheel sits two silver dials for the speedo and rev counter, with a seven-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display in the middle. The display is customisable and can project a number of driver information details.

Dodge says the new Dart will be all about customisation, giving owners the opportunity to create their own personalised vehicle. There will be 14 different interior colour combinations, and 12 exterior options.

Chrysler Australia told CarAdvice it will consider the Dodge Dart for our market if it is confirmed for right-hand drive markets. At this stage it Dodge has only confirmed the left-hand drive variant.

Sure, we"ve seen digital instrument panels before, but the one outfitted for the upcoming Dodge Dart re-birth caught our eye. You"ll be able to check gas mileage / fuel economy, odometer details, tire pressure, burned out lights, follow the navigation system and sort out your music choices. The color and image quality were both great, something that gets overlooked from time to time with on-board vehicle screens. While some simple animations take place on the screen for things like driving directions, the folks at Dodge affirm that the monitor won"t pose a distraction while you"re on the road.
