The death knell of your television has to be a cracked or broken screen. Outside of a TV catching on fire, it signals the end of your television experience. Or does it? Can a broken tv screen be salvaged from an errant drop or a momentary rage from a video game?

The short answer is no. TV manufacturers such as Sony, Vizo, Samsung, LG, etc., do not sell screen replacements. Add in the fact there isn’t a secondary market for tv screens due to the cost. Replacing a broken or cracked screen would be more expensive than buying a new TV off the showroom floor at your local big box retailer or online.

Local electronic repair shops would turn you away as it’s not worth their time, and they should be looking out for you, the customer. If they say it can be done, I’d run away because the business model of replacing or fixing broken/cracked tv screens doesn’t exist.

And before you hit YouTube up for a DIY, take a note from the pros. If they aren’t willing to take your money, that should be a sign it isn’t salvageable.

If the past few years have taught us anything, it is the fact a lot of the goods we buy, like televisions, come from a set number of factories. In the case of TV screens, that factory is most likely the BOE Technology factory located in Hefei, the capital city of China’s Anhui province.

To give you an idea of the scale of this factory, the assembly line is over a mile long, and the company counts Samsung, LG, Vizio, and Sony among its customer base. The cost of the factory? $7 billion USD for a line that produces one screen that passes QA out of every three off the line. And that’s for LCD panels. The process is even more complex if you include panels such as OLED and Mini LED.

Let’s say a company decides to offer replacement tv screens for breaks or cracks. If the screen costs $800 out of the total cost of $1000 for the tv, the labor alone would easily eclipse the purchase price of a new tv. Financially, it’s not a winner for the company or the consumer.

Maybe. It depends on what happened. If you tossed the remote at the screen, the answer is no. Most televisions have a one-year manufacturer warranty covering display issues, defects, etc. The warranty will spell out what will not be covered, including cosmetic damage (cracks and breaks), improper operation, user modifications, customer misuse, acts of god (weather), and repairs attempted by unauthorized repair centers.

Outside of manufacturing defects, if the screen has a break or a crack, you’re looking at buying a new tv. Probably not what you want to hear, but thankfully the price of TVs has come down quite a bit over the last few years.

Now that you’re stuck with a broken television, you’ll want to dispose of it. Before you start to eye the nearest dumpster, there are proper ways to dispose of electronics like a tv. First, you could sell it. While the screen isn’t salvageable, the rest of the components are, and repair shops will happily take it off your hands to break it down for parts.

You can list it on various marketplaces such as Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Depending on your location, you can google electronic recycling for businesses that will purchase or pick up the item for free.

If that’s not an option, contact your local Public Works for the dates and drop off points for electronics. Each city offers days for the public to drop off used and broken electronics such as TVs for recycling. Best Buy also has a national recycling program for a small fee.

Buy a screen protector. With fixing the issue a non-starter, prevention is your best option. Like your phone, you can purchase screen protectors for TVs. Granted, these are designed for regular use. Don’t haul off and sling a fastball to test the durability. It will offer protection against everyday use. Retailers like Best Buy or Amazon will point you in the right direction for the brand of TV you own.

Mount your tv.Most breaks occur with the TV falling off its stand. With a wall-mounted tv, you remove that risk, and it has a sturdy anchor point. It won’t prevent everything, but you should be ok if you are golfing in your living room.

No video games. The horror. I’d go with the first two options, and maybe some anger management from those rage quits. Why else are you getting the 4K television if not to kick back and game a bit?

The above is probably not what you wanted to hear unless you have your eye on that new OLED and accidentally threw an elbow at your ancient TV on purpose. Screen repair options are nonexistent, and if you get lucky, the cost will outstrip the price of a new television.

Make sure you dispose of the broken tv correctly and opt for some prevention like a screen protector and a solid wall mount. Those two items should prevent most potential issues leading to a cracked screen unless you are practicing your WWE moves, so go forth and enjoy yourself.

How do you fix that which is broken? Specifically, how do you access your smartphone—to wipe all of your important data off of it, presumably before shipping it off for repair—when you’ve destroyed the screen?

I apologize for giving away the topic of this week’s Frank is in the spotlight this week:“I have my [Samsung] J7 Pro. How can I wipe or delete all the data on it? The screen and LCD are totally cracked, but it powers on and lights up.”

This must-have bundle nets you either of Gladly’s award-winning Anthem2 or Anthem4 All-Terrain Stroller Wagons as well as must-have accessories like a parent cupholder, a removable storage basket, extra-large canopies, a nap system, quilted comfort seats, a cooler bag with a padded shoulder strap, and a travel bag.

I’m not quite sure what your broken smartphone actually does, based on your phrasing. If it’s cracked, but it powers up and you can get a reasonable sense of what you’re tapping—if the device even registers your finger-pressing—you can just factory reset it the normal way. Tap on the Settings app; then either “General Management,” “Backup and reset,” or “Privacy,” depending on what it’s called on your Galaxy J7 Pro; and then “Factory Data Reset” to get the process going.

If neither of these solutions work because your screen is too damaged—I dropped my iPhone 4 in a pool once, so I feel your pain—you have two other options.

Once you toggle the factory reset, you’ll need to power on your smartphone in order for it to trigger. And once the factory reset finishes, you shouldn’t be able to locate your smartphone on either Find My Device or Find My Mobile, since it will no longer be associated with your account. (It’s back to its default settings, after all.) That’s a great way to check and make sure the reset worked, in case you can’t see anything on your shattered screen.

Well I have the Samsung Galaxy S4 and recently I took it out of it"s case to clean the case and the screen but upon taking it out of the case I dropped it on the floor and the screen completely cracked right down the middle. Everything still worked just with a cracked screen. I ordered a replacement which came in today and I tried replacing it myself using some video tutorial I found from someone on YouTube but I completely messed up the phone to the point where the LCD stopped working.

Now the phone turns on and you can hear the intro samsung music playing but there is nothing on the screen itself. I took it to a repair shop earlier today and they told me I damaged the LCD so it has to be replaced completely. I was just thinking now that they have my phone and are fixing it for Monday I forgot to back everything up. I have all my pictures on there and my music and text messages too. Will I lose all my things when they replace the LCD? Or how does that work? I wasn"t using a memory card everything is directly on the phone.

Under your Pixel 5 phone’s screen, at the top center, you can see a white dot. This white dot is your proximity sensor. When your proximity sensor is on, the dot shows through the display. The dot can blink or stay solid.

Your proximity sensor keeps your phone’s screen off while you hold your phone near your face during a call, when your screen is locked, and when used by certain apps. Keeping the screen off helps save battery and avoid accidental taps on the screen.

All Pixel phones have proximity sensors. Because the Pixel 5’s display goes almost to the edge, you can see the Pixel 5’s sensor under the screen. Check our Pixel 5 phone diagram.

So, is it possible to repair your broken screen or need to replace it with a new one? Here"s everything you need to know about fixing broken smartphone screens.

We’ve all thought of all those crazy ideas of repairing a broken phone screen when we mistakenly smash our phone screens. Had it been one could repair a phone screen only with some chemical components (say Superglue) purchased from a local store, no one would have time to visit the repair center.

However, based on how modern smartphone screens are manufactured, it’s impossible to repair but replace them. After all, it’s not quite easy to restore broken pieces of glasses without passing through industrial chemical processes.

Getting straight to the point, a broken phone screen cannot be repaired but replaced. That’s because the phone screen is made of glass materials that cannot be joined together again once shattered, without undergoing industrial processes.

And, talking about melting a broken screen together by an industrial process, it cannot the applied to a broken phone screen unless you want to damage it totally. That"s why your broken phone screen is recycled to make another spare part once replaced.

There’s also a notion that the touchscreen is different from the visual display. Yes, that’s true as the screen is made up of two layers – the Touch and the LCD.

On many older phones, a technician could replace the touchpad easily without affecting the actual screen (LCD). That"s because older phones screens are split into two layers as mentioned above. However, it"s another story on modern phones.

Modern phone screens have gotten better and better over the years, and now, these two layers cannot be separated. That means: if your phone screen cracks (even slightly), you cannot change the touch panel alone. You would have to change the whole screen.

Was that a stupid and expensive move? Probably not. By fusing the digitizer (touchpad) with the LCD, manufacturers have been able to make thinner and robust screens to use on smartphones. Had it been you can separate your phone screen, it probably would have lacked special features like Gorilla Glass, high touch-sampling rate, and others.

Another advantage is, by fusing the screen with the touch panel, your phone screen would still respond to touches accurately, even when it"s broken. With that, you could choose to continue using your phone for a while after breaking its screen. That"s what you don"t get on older phones with separable displays. Even a slight crack could render the touch screen useless.

To sum up, it’s impossible to repair your broken screen, and you can’t replace only the touchpad if that’s what’s broken. Once you break your phone screen accidentally, you’ll need to replace the whole screen from an authorized repair centre. That"s how to keep enjoying your phone after breaking its screen.

To replace your broken phone screen, all you need is to visit the cell phone repair centre where the technician would access your phone and fix the broken screen.

To replace your cracked phone screen without recurring problems, we recommend you visit the official service provider for your brand. They’re the best place to get genuine screen replacement parts. Otherwise, you may end up with various display problems after fixing your phone screen from an unauthorized repair shop.

Meanwhile, the cost of screen replacement service from the official service provider may be reasonably higher than the local shops in most cases. That"s to be expected, given the quality of spare parts, professionalism, reliability, and warranty you’d get afterward.
