The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 (discontinued) is an excellent laptop: compact, without feeling cramped; plenty of power; great battery life. Unfortunately, it was equipped by the manufacturer with a disappointingly poor TN LCD panel in its display. It featured an awful blue color cast, low contrast (blacks were never very dark), and a limited range of viewing angles.

Thankfully, Lenovo offered an IPS LCD panel as an optional upgrade. In recent years, replacement IPS panels have been available from third-party outlets for approximately US$60. Just search eBay for “X220 IPS panel” and you’ll find no shortage of vendors.
