The Nautilus Rolling Shutter System undergoes extensive and rigorous testing including large missile impact tests, forced entry tests for security purposes and are fatigue tested for up to 15,000 cycles to ensure the integrity and durability of each and every component. The Nautilus Rolling Shutter System is manufactured with only the highest quality aluminum components. The slats, axles, housings, and end caps are all fabricated from 6063 T-6 aluminum alloy.

The Nautilus curtain is fabricated from ten different size slats that get progressively larger ranging in size from 1.765″ for slat number one to 3.272″ for slat number ten. Each slat is used in groups of five. Five number one slats are slid together and create one 360 degree circle around the axle. Five number two slats are added to create another 360 degree circle around slat number one. Five number three slats are then added. Slats are added in groups of five until the desired curtain height is achieved.

The Nautilus Rolling Shutter System has a variety of uses including hurricane shutter protection for typically mounted and built-in applications, storefront, security, countertops and is ideal for large porches and balconies.

The Nautilus slat uses an interlocking hinge which eliminates all “play” between slats. This allows the balance spring to operate to 100% of its capacity, neutralizing the weight of the entire curtain. This enables the end user to operate a very large 120 sq. ft. shutter manually with a crank or by pulling the shutter up and down by hand. The use of the starter slat which is affixed directly to the axle, the #12 retention screw and interlocking hinge create a shutter which is virtually impossible to breach by way of forced entry.

The end retention side rail measures 4″ in width and 1 ¼” deep. The rail is designed with two grooves on the inside of each side of the track to receive felt strips. A single felt strip on each side is utilized for standard household applications and a double felt strip is installed for shutters that are used on a daily basis such as storefront and countertop applications. A decorative snap cover is used to conceal fastening hardware and deter access for security purposes. Rails are pre punched.

The Nautilus is the only shutter in the industry that utilizes an extruded aluminum end cap. This adds substantial strength to the shutter and eliminates the problem of end cap failure; a common occurrence with cast end caps. The end cap goes through a five step pre-treatment process to prep the substrate prior to painting. The process includes a chemical bath, clean water rinse, acid etch, a second clean water rinse and a deionization treatment to eliminate any mineral residue. The end cap is then painted with marine grade super durable polyester powder coat paint. Using an extruded aluminum end cap eliminates the potential for out gassing; a common occurrence for cast end caps. Out gassing is the cause of paint failure resulting in cracking and peeling of the paint. Nothing gets through the bolted end cap; all components are attached from within the shutter. This allows for end to end and trapped installations to be serviced without removing the shutter.

The Nautilus bayonet is extruded aluminum and has been tested to 400lbs. eliminating the problem of the end cap leg snapping off during installation; unlike cast end cap legs. The extruded bayonet allows the installer to simply slide the side rails on each bayonet, lean the shutter forward and secure it, cutting down installation time.

The Nautilus utilizes 60mm and 70mm extruded aluminum axles. All axles are painted with an electro-statically applied baked on enamel paint. This helps eliminate the wear lines that typically appear on the upper slats.

Only 316 or 410 series marine grade stainless steel hardware is used in the construction of the Nautilus Rolling Shutter. The end retention screw is a 2 ¾” #12- 410 stainless steel truss head. The screw is spray coated with AC-Silver, a two part corrosive resistant coating. A zinc-rich base coat provides sacrificial protection of the stainless steel substrate while the aluminum rich organic top coat creates a durable barrier which provides exceptional galvanic corrosion resistance. AC-Silver is salt spray tested for 1000 hours. The retention bushing is made of high performance acetel polymer.

The Nautilus Rolling Shutter System uses only Somfy and Simu motors and control systems. Somfy is the world’s leading manufacturer of roll shutter motors and control systems including hand held remote controls, override systems, built-in receivers, keyed and keypad entry systems. Somfy and simu products are ISO 9001 certified and posses safety approvals from Underwriters Laboratories. Somfy and Simu motors and control systems carry a 5 year warranty.

Nautilus Rolling Shutters are available in four colors: white, ivory, bronze and beige. Trim packages consisting of end caps, rails, housings and base slats may differ in color than that of the curtain.

With the Nautilus U614 you’re getting DualTrack LCD screens for monitoring of workout data when using the media shelf, a 3-speed cooling fan, USB charging port, acoustic speakers, and full range of quick-select resistance options.

The only real differences between this model and the higher priced U616 are that the screens aren’t backlit, fewer resistance level options, and lack of Bluetooth connectivity for the data sync to NautilusConnect and MyFitnessPal.

That’s why Nautilus have programmed 22 preset training profiles into the console, which have been grouped into five main categories. This includes a fitness test for measuring your progress over time.

That’s why it’s so important that the Nautilus U614 has two user profiles, both of which allow you to store personal information for use in these calculations. This includes your age, weight, name, and preferred workout values.

Having multiple user profiles also means you can sync your own workout data to the NautilusConnect and MyFitnessPal services, even with more than one person using the bike.

For such a competitive price point, it can be useful to have a shortlist of some of the top rated bestsellers so you can see how each bike compares. For the Nautilus U614 this means taking a look at the upgraded U616 and the bestselling Schwinn 130.

The Nautilus U616 has seven additional workout programs, Bluetooth connectivity for improved data sync, a backlight to each display screen, and an oversized saddle for additional comfort.

If you read our recent review of the Nautilus R614 recumbent bike, you might remember we made some important comparisons between that bike and the Schwinn 270.

Whereas the Nautilus U614 will sync its data to NautilusConnect, the Schwinn 130 syncs data to SchwinnConnect, which again offers very similar features.

The DualTrack LCD display is available on both models, as is the pivoting handlebar design and console entertainment features, such as a media shelf and speakers.

This made us turn to the workout tracking systems – SchwinnConnect and NautilusConnect, to see if there were any benefits that one system offered over the other.

One of the main benefits of the Nautilus bike is that you can sync to MyFitnessPal as well as Nautilus’ own tracking site. But this is also something that’s advertised when you create your account on SchwinnConnect.

Although NautilusConnect lets you view your latest workout, totals, and a chart of your recent workout data, the Schwinn site appears to be much more goal and achievement orientated.

Aside from these minor differences, it really come down to aesthetics. If you like the look of the Schwinn 130 then that’s the better choice. Alternatively if you prefer the style of the Nautilus U614 then that will be your best option. In terms of specifications, they’re identical.

Although the Nautilus U614 weighs in slightly heavier than similarly priced upright bikes (3 lbs more than the Schwinn 130), it’s still considerably lighter than the equivalent model in a recumbent bike (R614 weighs in excess of 90 lbs).

Seat isn’t particularly comfortable compared to some upright bikes, but this is replaceable (Hobson Easyseat Dual Pad Bicycle Saddle was a popular choice for the replacement)

In our opinion the variety of workout programs and support for workout tracking, tablets, and smart phones really sets it apart from most of its competitors.

Well-equipped throughout, the Nautilus T618 is a decent treadmill under $1,500 for runners. For just $1,499 is a good folding treadmill option with a better combination of training guidance, workout tracking, performance components and buyer protections.
