But what is really nice is the Nautilus app for your data phone. The app communicates with the bike and the program stores an incredible amount of very usable rider data that can be read a variety of ways. I really like this the best.

The magneto-resistance still works perfectly fine. The display board works perfectly fine. And the Nautilus app is just great. I have compared this to what Nordic Track uses and there is no comparison. This is far better.

The T616 is one of three current treadmills from Nautilus, with a few more features than its little sister, the T614, but not much else that makes it an appealing choice.

The T616 console features a dual, blue backlit LCD display showing you your workout metrics such as time, distance, calories and incline level.  It also features acoustic speakers and a 3 speed fan.

It is only one of three treadmills currently offered, along with the entry level T614 model and the new top of the line T618 treadmill, so we"re not entirely sure the company is focusing on their treadmills.  With other more popular brands under the Nautilus umbrella, including Bowflex, it"s not surprising that these machines would take a back seat.

At any rate, the T616 does give you some decent features. Unlike the T614 this one has a dual display, so you can still see your workout stats if you are using your tablet or reading a magazine.

You have speeds up to 12 mph and incline up to 15% which is nice for targeting different muscle groups.  You get 26 workouts including weight control, custom, manual, heart rate, training and goals, and you can sync your workouts to NautilusConnect for tracking and motivational purposes.  There are 4 user profiles.

What don"t we like?  There"s nothing inherently wrong with the Nautilus T616, it just seems to be a few years behind the times as far as what it offers.  At its list price of $1799, it would be nice if it had a touch screen rather than a basic LCD display.  But that is not really a deal breaker.

The real issue is with the sub-par warranties on both Nautilus treadmills. The T614 and T616 come with the same 10 year frame warranty (15 years on the T618), which just goes to show you that the company does not have that much faith in the durability of these machines.  You"ll find a lifetime frame warranty pretty much everywhere these days, especially on treadmills in this price range.

The simple fact is that there are better treadmills out there than the NordicTrack T616.  However, if you can pick one up at half off it really is not a bad deal at $1000.

You do get nice incline, up to 12mph speed, a heart rate monitor included, good cushioning, a generous sized deck and the ability to track and monitor your workouts through NautilusConnect and sync them to your favorite fitness apps.

Patek Philippe is one of the best watch manufacturers around the world - no doubts about it. And when you ask around a crowd of people interested in horology about Patek, the logical - and most common term associated with Patek is... “Nautilus”.

The Nautilus is all the current fad there is about Patek. Forget the Calatrava, the perpetual calendars, the repeaters - everything. We can make a parody of the old Sting’s album - so, people do not care about turtles: they dream about the blue Nautilus.

Enter Patek Philippe and the Nautilus. For reasons unknown to everybody, the Nautilus (and especially, its blue flavor) has become THE object of desire in horology. And this was, and still is happening, something so unexpected that even Patek Philippe’s owner has no idea why.

So, we introduce you to Mr. Thierry Stern, president of Patek Philippe, the latest heir of the Stern family, that is, the current owners of the watchmaker. He is the son of Philippe Stern, who was at the helm of the company in 1976 when Gerald Genta designed the Nautilus.

The shape of the original Nautilus, the Ref. 3700, comes from the creative inspirations of Monsieur Genta at that time - and the passion of Mr. Stern Sr. for sailing.

“Why is the Nautilus so popular?” Mr. Stern asked himself rhetorically in an interview during one of the family-owned house’s promotional events. “Of course I am happy about it, but honestly I don’t know the answer.”

It is estimated that the yearly supply of Nautilus covers around 10% of the requests in its different references, which range in price from the five to the six figures bordering to seven. Which puts the company in a steady position financially, with such a “cash cow” in its lineup.

Movement aside, the last difference between the two Nautilus releases is the bracelet - and precisely, the clasp, which in the 5711 version becomes more complete, with a double folding clasp and a flip lock. Such a system looks much nicer, of course, than the old simple folding mechanism with flip lock, and much more in line with the current requirements of a typical modern luxury watch.

If you ask a typical Nautilus fan, he would tell you that a 5711 does everything they need from a watch without going beyond, and being perfectly adequate every time without looking “too much”. As such, the Nautilus is the perfect fit for almost everything, from the most mundane daily activities to a day at the office to a gala dinner, without skipping a beat.

As far as this sounds a bit pretentious, it represents the truth. The genius of this Genta-designed timepiece was to make a luxury watch always wearable, making it a sort of more “democratic” timepiece. Remember that the Nautilus comes right after 1968, when the rules of etiquette and fashion were completely changed.

Gone were the days of the gold and crocodile leather and diamonds. The new luxury was based on a different take of stainless steel, as the same Mr. Genta had pioneered when he launched the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, another iconic watch stemming from the same period, which he designed right before the Nautilus.

But examining the situation from another perspective, Mr. Rosenbeck might not be all this crazy after all. As handsome the Royal Oak might be, currently the Nautilus has become a member of another, superior, category - the objects of desire.

“We should really divide Patek into two niches,” he says. “On the first, we find the most popular pieces, like the Calatrava and the Nautilus. On the other one, there is the true Patek Philippe: and I mean, the Haute Horlogerie. Not that there is this difference in quality or make: but the public is somewhat different, especially since the list prices are.

We have to note that despite all this Nautilus fever, the rest of Patek’s production does not enjoy the same treatment. You actually can walk in a Patek store and get out of it with a new Calatrava, which is possibly the most beautiful dress watch of the world. No problems at all - if you have a valid credit card, that is.

So, as we are watch lovers and experts, our last word of advice is that, while you might be tempted to aim for a Nautilus to demonstrate something to yourself, it would be much wiser for your bank accounts to heed for Mr. Sterns call: “We make about 140 different models at Patek Philippe, and the basic Ref. 5711 in steel is just one of them. We have many other models that are more complicated, and arguably, more beautiful.”

For example, you could get a beautiful Golden Ellipse 3748, which was also designed by Gerald Genta a few years before the Nautilus. It is a brilliant, minimalistic take - despite its 18k gold case and bracelet - of the dress watch. A dark blue dial displays the baton-like hour marks, and you can see in the oblong shape of the case the creative essence that you find in the lines of the Nautilus.

Dr. Pierre-Nicolas Schwab is the founder of IntoTheMinds, a market research website with excellent analytical information on many market segments, including luxury watches. Schwab has kindly allowed us to republish this article tracking the price evolution of Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, including a breakdown of which precise models, case materials, and even bracelet options have appreciated the most.

How much does a Patek Philippe Nautilus cost? How will Nautilus prices evolve? Answering these questions, as relevant as they are, has become extremely difficult following the bubble formed in the luxury men’s watch market. Some models have seen their prices explode. The Nautilus from Patek Philippe is one of them. This article analyzes the price history of 31 Patek Philippe Nautilus models. We reveal the models that have gained an absolute value, the most dramatic relative increases, and the influence of case and bracelet material. These analyses are indispensable if you want to invest or simply treat yourself.

To realize this research, we based ourselves on this guide dedicated to the Patek Philippe Nautilus to cover the most significant models. We have selected 37 Nautilus models, which you will find listed at the end of this article.

You will note that for some of the models we pre-selected, we could not find enough data. We have therefore excluded them from the calculations. These are the Patek Philippe Nautilus references 5968A-001, 5968A-001, 5719/10G-010, 5724R-001, 5168G-010, and 4700/51.

The model that has gained the most value is the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5976/1G-001: its value has increased by almost €550,000 since 2018. This white gold model was released in 2016 for the 40th anniversary of the Nautilus. This anniversary model was a limited edition (1,300 pieces) and was, logically, reserved for the brand’s best customers. One example sold in May 2022 at Christie’s for €915,000, well above its high estimate. This was undoubtedly due to its mint condition, which made this example particularly desirable to buyers and made it an exciting investment piece.

On the second step of the podium is the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1R-001. This is an all rose gold model that would have been produced in approximately 1,200 pieces. This model had rapidly increased, and at the peak of its form in February 2022 it had an average gain of nearly €330,000. The market has since turned around, and the 5711/1R-001 has fallen significantly. Recent auction results show a value of approximately $200,000.

On the third step of the podium is the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980/1R-001. This is a pink gold Nautilus (case and bracelet) with the same complication (chronograph) as the anniversary model 5976/1G-001 on the podium’s top step. This model has been very fashionable and in February 2022 had an average selling price €290,000 higher than in January 2018. Since then, the speculative bubble has been deflating, and examples have been sold at auctions for below $300,000. This is far from a good deal, but it is clear that some models were benefiting from a craze driven by speculation.

Having looked at the appreciation of the various Patek Philippe Nautilus models, let’s now look at the relative increase (in percentage) over the last four years. The list prices of the Nautilus models vary greatly: from less than €30,000 for the Nautilus 5711 in steel to more than €100,000 for the Nautilus 5740 white gold perpetual calendar. To multiply your stake, not all Nautilus models are equal.

No less than seven Patek Philippe Nautilus models increased in value by at least 400% between January 2018 and February 2022, when the luxury men’s watch market peaked.

The Nautilus 5711/1R-001 mentioned in the previous paragraph has seen its value increase by 744%! It is far ahead of the other models, most of which are made of steel.

Logic would dictate that precious metals are the most sought after and outperform watches made of less noble materials. This is not the case. Our analysis shows that steel Nautilus models have experienced the most dramatic growth in the last four years.

The steel Nautilus grew 361% from 2018 to the February 2022 peak. That’s slightly better than rose gold’s 332% and the gold/steel combination’s 316%. In terms of valuation, the takeoff was from November 2020.

Nautilus in steel, rose gold, and gold/steel are the ones that have progressed the most. White gold increased by “only” 172%. Yellow gold seems to be the “unloved” material since Nautilus models made of this material have increased by only 33% in four years. So, there is clearly a disaffection of buyers toward yellow gold.

The last analysis concerns the influence of the strap material. Sporty models such as the Nautilus are very well suited to a bracelet in the same metal as the case. Since the speculative bubble in the luxury watch market is mainly centered around sporty models (Nautilus, Aquanaut, Royal Oak, Rolex), the influence of the type of bracelet/strap was worth asking about. Spoiler alert ☢ the result is not what you think.
