It’s the end of an era for LCD panels, or at least for those manufactured by Samsung. The Korean firm has been teasing the end of its LCD manufacturing for years, but now, the deadline is about to be reached. From June 2022, Samsung Display will no longer produce liquid-crystal displays (LCD). This does not mean that the end of LCD panels in smartphones, computers, and other electronics. It’s just Samsung leaving the segment due to tough competition from its Chinese and Taiwanese counterparts.

Instead of keeping a tepid LCD business, the company will shift efforts to OLED (organic light-emitting diode) and QD displays. The OLED panels have become the “best” for the smartphone market. There is still a predominance of LCD screens, but most of the flagship, premium mid-range, and even conventional smartphones are getting OLED displays nowadays. LCDsare still very popular in the segment of PCs and laptops, however.

According to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), the average price index of LCD panels, measured against 100 in January 2014, will fall to 36.6 in September of this year. The figure has dropped farther from the record low of 41.5 in April of this year. It’s also 58 percent lower than the record high of 87 in June 2021.

Unfortunately, no investment plan details have since been announced. However, the employees of the LCD business should retain their jobs. The company will likely move them to the Quantum Dot Display business. Worth noting, that Samsung has been trying to leave the LCD segment since 2020. The initial plan was to close the business at the end of 2020. However, these plays have been delayed by Samsung Electronics. The sudden increase in the prices of the LCD panels during the COVID-19 pandemic urged Samsung Display to keep the manufacturing for a while. This resulted in an entire 2021 of continuous manufacturing. Now, however, the business seems to have reached the deadline.

The display affiliate was first formed in 1991, as an LCD business arm under Samsung Electronics. It formally launched in 2021, as Samsung Display. It has merged with three local and Japanese makers of active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLED), for the production of advanced types of displays. The company will no longer produce the panels for Samsung TVs which will likely push forward the portfolio of QD and OLED smart TVs.

The mid-range segment of smartphones may not suffer a big impact. After all, there are countless LCD makers still operating in the industry. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens are a staple in the digital display marketplace and are used in display applications across every industry. With every display application presenting a unique set of requirements, the selection of specialized LCDs has grown to meet these demands.

LCD screens can be grouped into three categories: TN (twisted nematic), IPS (in-plane switching), and VA (Vertical Alignment). Each of these screen types has its own unique qualities, almost all of them having to do with how images appear across the various screen types.

This technology consists of nematic liquid crystal sandwiched between two plates of glass. When power is applied to the electrodes, the liquid crystals twist 90°. TN (Twisted Nematic) LCDs are the most common LCD screen type. They offer full-color images, and moderate viewing angles.

TN LCDs maintain a dedicated user base despite other screen types growing in popularity due to some unique key features that TN display offer. For one,

VA, also known as Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment (MVA) dislays offer features found in both TN and IPS screens. The Pixels in VA displays align vertically to the glass substrate when voltage is applied, allowing light to pass through.

Displays with VA screens deliver wide viewing angles, high contrast, and good color reproduction. They maintain high response rates similar to TN TFTs but may not reach the same sunlight readable brightness levels as comparable TN or IPS LCDs. VA displays are generally best for applications that need to be viewed from multiple angles, like digital signage in a commercial setting.

IPS displays offer a slightly lower refresh rate than TN displays. Remember that the time for pixels to go from inactive to active is measured in milliseconds. So for most users, the difference in refresh rates will go unnoticed.

Based on current trends, IPS and TN screen types will be expected to remain the dominant formats for some time. As human interface display technology advances and new product designs are developed, customers will likely choose IPS LCDs to replace the similarly priced TN LCDs for their new projects.

Faced with a reduced workforce caused by travel bans and quarantine conditions, LCD and OLED fabrication plants (fabs) across China struggled to resume normal operations in early‐ to mid‐February. Chinese LCD fabs were only expected to have a capacity utilization of 70 to 75 percent for the month compared to a normal rate of 90 to 95 percent, according to research from Omdia Display.

The biggest impact is in LCD displays for TVs and notebook computers. By late 2019, the prolonged issue of LCD panel over‐supply driven by Chinese fabs had begun to reverse course as Korean manufacturers restructured their capacity, shutting down some fabs and converting others to OLED production. According to Hsieh, concerns about an LCD panel supply going forward already had spurred some TV manufacturers to increase orders, and now that LCD production in China is slowing as a result of the COVID‐19 outbreak, LCD panel makers are seeking sharp price increases from their original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers, with a month‐to‐month jump of as much as 10 percent in some cases.

Omdia had originally forecast that the price for an open‐cell LCD TV panel was going to rise by $1 or $2 per month in February, but the actual increase may wind up being $3 to $5 for the month. “The problem is the coronavirus is coming so fast [that] the panel maker has been given a very good reason to increase the price radically,” Hsieh says. He also expects prices to increase for notebook displays, for which he predicts a 30–40 percent decrease in production for 2020"s first financial quarter (Q1), because of shortages in LCD modules.

While concerns over COVID‐19 caused the cancellation of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tradeshow in Barcelona, Spain, the near‐term impact of the epidemic on smartphone display production appears to be minimal. Q1 production of smartphone displays is generally slow, notes Hsieh, with OEMs traditionally announcing new smartphone models at MWC, but not placing orders for displays until Q2 or Q3. And the bulk of OLED displays, which dominate the market for new high‐end phones, also are made by Korean manufacturers such as Samsung Display. Last year, Korean fabs shipped 433 million smartphone displays, while China was at 54 million. Hsieh said initial targets for 2020 were 476 million smartphone OLEDs shipped from Korea and 128 million from China, which would more than double China"s total from last year. Although the coronavirus will cause a “short‐term setback” for Chinese smartphone OLED makers, he still has a target of more than 100 million Chinese OLEDs.

In Wuhan itself, there are five major fabs, with four making smartphone displays. China Star and Tianma each operate a low‐temperature polycrystalline silicon LCD fab and a flexible OLED fab in the city, while BOE has a new Gen 10.5 LCD plant aimed at TV panels. Hsieh says that the China Star and Tianma OLED fabs are both in the ramping‐up stages, and the new BOE fab also is moving slowly. The biggest impact of COVID‐19 in Wuhan may be on the China Star Gen 6 OLED plant. Along with BOE, it"s slated to be a key supplier of flexible OLED panels for Lenovo"s new Motorola Razr foldable phone. “It"s unfortunate timing,” Hsieh says. —Glen Dickson

Chinese presence in the LCD panel industry continues its expansion. Samsung used to dominate in the high-end panel market but is now no longer obsessed with the business as before. Samsung has sold its panel production line to China"s CSOT. China-made panels are expected to dominate the market before OLED panel is mature enough to erode the market share of LCD panels. It is predicted China-made panels will account for over 70% of the global panel market share.

In terms of applications, cockpit dashboards and central control systems both maintain double-digit growth. Interactive digital signage displays also perform well with good sales. The market preference is tilting towards the large-sized models. After taking over Samsung"s production line, CSOT is to be a significant player and poses threats to Taiwanese firms.
