Out-of-warranty and DIY repair options cost more than the phone is worth, so your phone would lose value if you chose those options. Keep in mind that might not be true for all models.

Of course, your decision depends not only on the value, but also how long you plan to keep your phone. If you intend to keep it for a few more years, it’s cheaper to repair it than to buy a new phone.

If you plan to upgrade soon and trade in your old phone, however, it’s a good idea to compare your options to see whether you’ll get more value after repair or selling it as-is.

As mobile phone displays are much tougher than they used to be, it seems like they"re indestructible. Sadly, they"re not. Dropping your phone can often break the display. Your phone can no longer be considered useful.

You should also consider the non-monetary costs: time spent without a phone, data that needs archiving from the device. Hopefully your mobile platform"s cloud service can help here, or perhaps a desktop utility can check the phone"s contents.

Fitting a new display that costs the same as a replacement phone is pointless. However, if replacing the mobile phone screen is closer to $15, it makes sense to have a go yourself.

The most obvious location for a replacement display is eBay. Simply searching for the mobile phone model and the word display will turn up the required parts. Just remember to shop safely when using eBay.

These tools are included to remove the case and unscrew any components that obstruct replacing the display. For example, a mobile phone will have Torx screws under the battery cover that will need removing before you gently prize the case apart.

There are so many different mobile phone models on the market (either new or used) that providing a standardized guide is next to impossible. Additionally, some models cannot be repaired without sending them back to the manufacturer.

These are often threaded through the different layers of hardware within the phone. Ribbon cables are delicate; easily broken, take care as damage to these could change the dynamic of the repair considerably.

Reconnect the relevant cables, locking them down where necessary. Place the components back in the case with care, checking that there are no cables or screws left over. Test the phone to check that it works.

The moment of truth: does the new screen work? Remember, a touchscreen display has two purposes: touch interaction, and displaying the phone"s operating system.

However, it isn"t always plain sailing. I"ve fitted a replacement display that caused the phone to overheat. Therefore, it is important to buy components from reputable sellers, and ensure you"re buying the right parts for your phone.

Here"s another tech problem you can solve yourself with a bit of time and effort: phone display flickering. And if you drop your phone into the water, don"t panic, follow these tips to help save it.

Now though, after rearranging some fees and optional insurance plans, Samsung offers a more affordable solution for accidental screen damage to the Fold 4 and Flip 4. To access this shockingly low screen replacement price of $29, you"ll have to enroll in Samsung Care+, an extended warranty program.

Samsung Care+ is an optional warranty that extends well beyond the included one-year limited warranty and covers Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH). Most limited warranties don"t cover ADH. In other words, if you drop your phone and crack the screen without additional coverage from Samsung, the replacement cost is entirely on you. Up to the third-gen Fold and Flip, these out-of-warranty costs were sky-high, easily leading to total repair bills of $400 or more.

Samsung hasn"t yet released how much out-of-warranty screen replacement will cost for the new foldables. When it does, check back, and we"ll make sure to lay out the fees. For now, though, Samsung wasted no time offering its newly laid out Care+ package. For $11 per month, Samsung guarantees even its newest and most expensive 5G smartphones against a wide range of accidental damage. Previous generations of Samsung foldables commanded $249 for screen replacements — even with a subscription to Care+.

With the release of the fourth generation of folding phones, it makes sense that Samsung is making this kind of owner-friendly change. After all, display damage is a big deterrent to many people spending $1,000+ on a smartphone. Knowing that this relatively affordable insurance plan now covers cracked screens for next to nothing could be a big step toward pushing folding phones deeper into the mainstream.

For folding phones, you"ll need the Tier 4 plan, which costs $11 per month. You can pay $239 upfront for 24 months of coverage, which is about a 9% discount vs. paying per month. Samsung currently charges $17.99 per month for accidental damage plus loss and theft coverage; it"s not a bad deal for heavy users of Samsung"s newest foldables, and it"s especially worthwhile if you plan on upgrading to the Z Fold 4.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 isn"t your conventional small phone, with a 6.7-inch 1080p display. It"s classed as a small phone because it can fold in half and fit in any pocket, including those found in women"s jeans. The battery life might not match phones like the S22+ or S22 Ultra, but the convenience more than makes up for it.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is one of the best smartphones ever made, offering a phone when you need it and a tablet when you want it, this is the most flexible and productive device we"ve ever used.

You seem to be in luck as far as cost goes too. Most of the replacement screens I came across were under $100 USD, which seems good for an OLED display, especially when ones like yours are part of the phone"s frame that everything else mounts on. Here"s just one example that seems to carry a wide variety of colors so you can hopefully get one that matches your current phone. Or I suppose if you wanted to change things up, you could just pick one you like instead!

Since you"ll have it out anyway, it might be worth considering whether you want to pop a new battery in. They"re usually not too expensive and you"ll extend the useful life of your phone even if your existing one is still working okay. Of course, if you should end up deforming the battery in the process of removing it, you would definitely want to replace it.

Adhesives; you"ll need double-sided adhesives to glue the battery when you"re putting it all back together. Generally the adhesive goes on the battery first rather than the phone. If you buy a battery, check to see if it comes with adhesive; that"ll save you an order if it does.

The video guide recommends removing the battery, SIM tray, and motherboard. This is not necessary, but it does make heating the phone safer. This procedure is only recommended if you"re replacing the battery and the screen at the same time.

This guide instructs you to replace only the display while leaving the original frame, logic board, and battery in place. Note: some replacement screens for this phone come pre-installed in a new frame (a.k.a. chassis), which requires you to transplant all of your phone"s internals and install a new battery. Make sure you have the correct part before starting this guide.

If the frame is damaged or bent, it"s important to replace it, or else the new screen may not mount correctly and can suffer damage from uneven pressure.

The process of separating the display from the frame usually destroys the display, so don"t follow this guide unless you intend to replace the display.

However, if the digitizer or LCD is also damaged during a fall, that screen no longer carries value because it cannot be refurbished. Repair shops cannot sell broken LCDs to refurbishing companies; therefore, they cannot offset the cost of an LCD repair. That is why repair stores often charge a little extra if there is damage to the LCD or digitizer, to make up for that loss. Repair stores that don’t have an additional charge for an LCD repair typically inflate their glass repair price to make up for the loss from damaged LCDs. If they have one price, that means everyone is paying more to cover the cost of customers who have damaged LCDs and customers who only have cracked glass. This is why TCR separates the price of glass and LCD repairs for you! If you only have cracked glass, you only have to worry about paying to replace the cracked glass.

If your phone or tablet’s glass is shattered there will be cracks or chips on the screen itself. If it is just the glass that is damaged, the device may still function and you may be able to use it normally. If this is the case, it is likely that only the glass needs to be replaced. To prevent further damage to your device it is best to get it repaired quickly. For example, if liquids seep through the cracks it could cause permanent damage to the LCD.

Many people may continue to use their touchscreen with shattered glass and delay fixing the glass on their devices; however, if the touchscreen isn’t responsive, it could be a sign of more significant damage to the device’s digitizer which is integrated with the LCD screen.

A pixelated screen can indicate LCD damage. This would look like a patch of multicolored dots, a line or lines of discoloration, or a screen with rainbow colors. For many people, these colors are an easy way to know that their LCD is broken and that they should get it repaired.

Even though the foldables technically have a price drop and promotions galore, $1,000 or more is still a hefty chunk of change to invest in this relatively new style of phone. And Samsung"s past foldables were viewed by many as too fragile for normal daily use. The South Korean giant

Care Plus is an extra coverage package for Samsung smartphones, PCs, laptops, tablets, home appliances, TVs and monitors that goes beyond the manufacturer"s warranty. Care Plus was originally called Samsung Premium Care, but was rebranded as Care Plus in 2020. The plan aims to provide quick and easy repairs and replacements of Samsung devices.

Starting from your enrollment date, Care Plus covers power-surge protection and breakdowns caused by accidental damage, as well as shipments to the manufacturer for replacement or repair and tech support through Asurion. Care Plus is inclusive of the manufacturer"s warranty, and except for the previously listed items, all other plan coverage becomes effective immediately following the manufacturer"s warranty expiration, according to the Care Plus Service Contract Coverage document.

Care Plus can cover replacements and repairs for breakdowns and failures due to normal wear and tear problems, as well as accidents such as dropping your phone, spillages and cracks. Accidental damage repairs and replacements have a cap of three times per year, according to Care Plus" FAQ. Mechanical breakdowns -- like battery failure -- have no repair limits and come with no service fees.

If you crack your screen or damage it in some other way, it will cost you $249 to repair, and you can replace it three times a year (for $249 each time). The fee is a discount from what you"ll pay to replace the inner screens if you don"t have coverage, but for the Flip, at least, it may not make sense unless you"re particularly accident-prone. You"ll be charged the $249 regardless of which screen is damaged, but if somehow you damage both screens in the same accident, you"ll only pay the $249 once.

If your initial year-long warranty has expired and you don"t have Samsung Care Plus, the inner Z Fold 3 display repair will set you back $479, if arranged through Samsung, while the outer will cost $149. The Z Flip 3 inner screen will cost you $349, while the cover display will cost $99 to replace. With Care Plus, the repair cost remains the same regardless of screen -- inner, outer or Z Flip cover screen. For the outer screens, it"s actually cheaper not to tap into Care Plus.

If Samsung approves your claim, it"ll send a replacement device. Once you receive it, you"ll need to return the faulty device within 10 days. If you miss the deadline, you"ll be charged an unrecovered equipment fee, according to the FAQ. Samsung does supply shipment packaging.

If you run into problems with your device, you can find help with repairs and replacements through uBreakiFix, which are Samsung-authorized service centers. Just visit the uBreakiFix website and enter your ZIP code. The company offers carry-in and curbside service, house calls and mail-in repairs.

Care Plus is administered by Asurion, a private company that provides insurance for smartphones, tablets, consumer electronics and more. Asurion makes the decision regarding whether your phone will need repair or replacing. After Asurion assesses your claim, it"ll let you know if you need to mail your device in or schedule an appointment with uBreakiFix. (Again, these will be handled by different companies in different countries.)

If you"re not covered under Care Plus and your phone malfunctions somehow, you can still take it to uBreakiFix. If your device has a problem covered by the manufacturer"s warranty, you won"t be charged.

Though it has only two camera lenses, Google"s amazing photo processing is borderline magical. It uses True Tone technology to accurately render darker skin tones, which can be a problem on other phones, and the Pixel camera app offers options to tweak exposure and color temperature live in the viewfinder. The Pixel 7 also has Google’s Magic Eraser feature, which can remove distractions and unwanted background objects in photos.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: We can’t find many flaws in the Google Pixel 7, especially given its price—we wouldn’t expect to see most of its “missing” features in a $600 phone anyway. We do wish it could charge faster; at best, it gets a little less than half a charge in 30 minutes.
