Apple has reportedly sealed the deal with BOE for manufacturing screens for its upcoming line-up of flagship smartphones in the iPhone 14 series. It has been reported that the deal has been signed at a whopping USD 7.75 million. According to the contract, BOE will be manufacturing 25 per cent of the OLED displays for the iPhone 14 series.
BOE will only produce 6.1-inch panels under the contract. This means that the vanilla models in the iPhone 14 line-up will use displays by BOE, while the iPhone 14 Max and Pro Max models will likely stick to screens manufactured by LG and Samsung. This is the first time that the Chinese brand, known for its expertise in manufacturing displays, will be making displays for iPhones.
The company has been making waves in the tech market ever since it started making OLED panels in 2021. BOE has reported a 60 per cent hike in its production in 2021. Owing to its rapid growth, the brand has consolidated its position as the top display manufacturer in China.
Even as Apple fans are awaiting any official development on the upcoming iPhone models, several reports have hinted at the tech giant’s progress with the M3 Apple Silicon Chip. Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.
Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. Some manufacturers make transparent LCD panels and special sequential color segment LCDs that have higher than usual refresh rates and an RGB backlight. The backlight is synchronized with the display so that the colors will show up as needed. The list of LCD manufacturers:
Organic light emitting diode (or OLED displays) is a thin, flat panel made of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. OLED panels can also take the shape of a light panel, where red, green and blue light emitting materials are stacked to create a white light panel. OLED displays can also be made transparent and/or flexible and these transparent panels are available on the market and are widely used in smartphones with under-display optical fingerprint sensors. LCD and OLED displays are available in different shapes, the most prominent of which is a circular display, which is used in smartwatches. The list of OLED display manufacturers:
MicroLED displays is an emerging flat-panel display technology consisting of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming the individual pixel elements. Like OLED, microLED offers infinite contrast ratio, but unlike OLED, microLED is immune to screen burn-in, and consumes less power while having higher light output, as it uses LEDs instead of organic electroluminescent materials, The list of MicroLED display manufacturers:

Chinese TV panel manufacturers are investing heavily in large-size screens with high-definition and cutting-edge technologies, a move that China"s display panel industry hopes will help it to make headway against overseas competitors.
Shipments of liquid crystal display (LCD) TV panels worldwide totaled 284 million last year, up 8.4 percent year-on-year, according to a report released by Beijing-based market researcher Sigmaintell Consulting.
BOE Technology Group Co Ltd, a leading domestic display producer, topped the global list for LCD TV panel shipments, shipping 54.3 million TV panels last year, up 27 percent year-on-year. LG Display followed with 48.6 million panels and Innolux Display Group with 45.1 million.
After BOE"s Gen 10.5 TFT-LCD production line entered operation in Hefei, Anhui province, in December 2017, the company"s production capacity increased by over 40 percent in 2018 year-on-year, according to Sigmaintell. The plant produces high-definition LCD screens of 65 inches and above.
"China"s semiconductor display industry has taken large steps forward in the past decade, changing the display industry"s global competitive landscape. China has transformed into the world"s largest consumer market and manufacturing base for display terminals, with huge market potential," said BOE Vice-President Zhang Yu.
BOE announced in November it had developed China"s first 55-inch 4K organic LED display using inkjet printing technology, which will break South Korea"s monopoly in the field of large-sized OLED panels.
Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Chinese consumer electronics giant TCL Corp, said in November its Gen 11 TFT-LCD and active-matrix OLED production line had officially entered operation. The facility produces 43-inch, 65-inch and 75-inch LCD screens.
Li Dongsheng, chairman of TCL, said after the completion of the new production line the company will continue to innovate, enhance its competitiveness and ramp up efforts to build Shenzhen in Guangdong province into the world"s largest semiconductor display industry base.
In addition to large screens, the company started to build a sixth-generation low-temperature polysilicon active-matrix OLED display panel production line in Wuhan, Hubei province, in 2017.
With an investment of 35 billion yuan ($5.17 billion), the facility will produce small and medium-sized high-resolution display panels that are flexible and foldable for high-end smartphones.
China is expected to replace South Korea as the world"s largest flat-panel display producer this year, according to a report from the China Video Industry Association and the China Optics and Optoelectronics Manufacturers Association.

The publication notes that it won’t be an easy path for CSOT, as China’s largest display panel maker BOE had failed “multiple times in Cupertino’s evaluation processes before finally being able to supply OLED panels to the iPhone maker.”
As 9to5Mac reported earlier this week, BOE, which currently manufactures OLED panels for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 – and will do the same for this year’s iPhone 14 – will try to supply displays for iPhone 15 Pro as well.
Although Apple has a very high standard on its supply chains, having more options is good. As The Elec notes, “Cupertino can also already use BOE to pressure Samsung Display and LG Display into lowering their unit prices. BOE’s OLED production capacity will also expand to 144,000 substrates per month by the end of this year or early next year, triple that of the maximum capacity at CSOT’s T4 factory.”

Since its founding in 1993, SANSI has been dedicated to technological innovation in a wide range of Chinese LED manufacturers, from commercial displays to home lighting. Sansi fully integrated product design, production, sales, installation, and customer support in effort to be an affordable, state-of-the-art LED technology supplier. Having successfully launched dozens of cutting-edge projects, SANSI’s mission is to raise the bar for LED applications.
First, as a special economic zone, Shenzhen had first released domestic “LED Industry Development Special Planning” in China. With the support of the national policy, Shenzhen intended to be another “Chinese Silicon Valley” and vital LED industry R&D manufacturing base around the world, which would focus on developing high-tech industries. As a result, it had attracted hundreds of international and domestic manufacturers and companies to set up in Shenzhen, especially including some LED suppliers and LED video wall manufacturers, such as Unilumin, Absen and LianTronics.
Second, due to the rapid development and the open market, LED display market of Shenzhen, even the whole China dramatically has expanded as well as raising demand. Besides, thousands of migrant population and technical personnel had entered Shenzhen, these population had provided companies and plants with large labour. Further, the rent price of factories in
Shenzhen was favourable, since LED is the abbreviation of Light-Emitting Diode, and Diode is an electronic device, LED displays product is a standardized electronic product, there is no doubt that all the top-notch LED suppliers and LED display manufacturers are concentrate mainly on Shenzhen. Moreover, Unilumin was founded in 2004, as a National Hi-Tech Enterprise of LED display manufacturer in Shenzhen, China.

On September 1, 2017, with a total investment of 2 billion yuan of silicon-based OLED display project in hefei new station, this is hefei new stations in the layout of the next generation display technology of important achievements, also promoted the hefei become China"s largest most complete types of display technology, the industrial agglomeration development base!
Silicon-based OLED display located in hefei in the bonded area, the program starting in September of 2018 moved to equipment, and put into production in 2019, is expected to realize annual output of 20 million pieces to 2020 micro display device, to become the world"s largest production base of micro silicon OLED display device!
It"s called the next-generation display technology. Micro silicon OLED display, the use of the difference between the conventional amorphous silicon, microcrystalline silicon or low temperature polycrystalline silicon thin film transistor AMOLED device for the back, it was based on the single crystal silicon as active drive back, making active organic light emitting diode display device, 1/10 of the pixel size of traditional display device, precision is much higher than that of traditional device, has high resolution, high integration, low power consumption, small volume, light weight, and many other advantages.
Comparison from the above table, we can find that instead of liquid crystal display technology HTPS (High Temperature Poly real - Silicon, High Temperature polysilicon) change of Si - OLED, which makes it not only from qHD resolution (960 x 540) up to the HD (1280 x 1280), a contrast from the original 230:1 soared to 100000:1, display NTSC soared from 52% to 90% NTSC color, brightness is from the previous generation 1050 nit to 1200 nit.
The nikkei BP journalists in truth over HMD vision products sales department business development of the product department minister jin Tian Dui also, jin tian minister said it was a smart glasses BT BT - 300 series "should be the beginning of the" form. The development of the silicon substrate organic EL screen (Si - OLED), adopted the through hole (Cavity) reflection direction and filter method to control the direction of the light, this is consider a plan at the beginning of the BT series. By 2016, we are finally at the starting point.
2017 will be the year of opportunity for AR & VR wearables market, and the OLED micro display with better optical design will definitely surpass 2016 in terms of applicability and cost efficiency.
There is growing evidence that apple will use OLED displays on its iPhone 8, but it is unclear how apple will choose to enter and occupy the "iGlass" market.
Apple has been conservative about OLED display technology, and its biggest rival, samsung, has already used the technology on its flagship Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7Ege. Google"s new phone, PixelPhone, also USES OLED display panels. This means that both GearVR and Google"s Daydream (and Oculus) will use OLED. According to Google, the mobile phone lineup that supports DayDream currently has Pixel/Pixel XL, Moto Z, huawei Mate 9 porsche design, Mate 9 Pro, zte Axon 7 and asus Zenfone AR.
Of the four largest OLED panel makers, including samsung, LG, sharp (foxconn) and JDI all actively invested to expand capacity, change a good rate, reduce the cost to reach an OLED display into large size TV and smart apparel market.
In 2017, is a new generation of AR and VR devices will hit the market, they use a higher pixel density of OLED display, also called the micro OLED displays, combined with lens combination to create a more smooth, more fashionable appearance of glasses. These tiny OLED glasses will provide the amount of cost competitive products instead of more expensive (industrial and professional use) AR systems using LCOS AR systems (such as Himax, Kopin, Syndiant), such as application Microsoft Hololens and other Waveguide (such as Lumus - now support HTC, Vuzix) for solution.
Thanks to a large investment in OLED TVS, mobile phones and OLED display panels, the brightness of the panels and the output efficiency of the blue light are rapidly improved. For VR applications, the brightness level is not as critical as the AR requirement, because in the AR scenario, the application needs to be rendered based on the light from the surrounding scene.KOPIN - OLED MICRODISPLAY
Kopin, a leading supplier of near-eye-displays, announced that it would build a new product line that would carry a tiny OLED display. This time they are connected to the next three cities in OLED, LCD and LCOS (four-dimensional display) display.
Since they produced the first LCDCyberDisplay product in 1997, Kopin has shipped more than 30 million devices to a wide range of customers, including Nikon, Olympus, Recon, Samsung and Vuzix (which also provides waveguide headphones). Their Kopin CyberDisplays have become the top choice for the us army"s advanced night vision and thermal weapons sights.
Kopin"s new oled-on-silicon display is based on two key components: the silicon-based backboard that drives the OLED pixels and the OLED luminescent layer. Unlike the traditional factory manufacturing model, Kopin has outsourced the production of the two components to create a business model for the production of OLED micro-displays with no manufacturing plants. This model is similar to the OmniVision CMOS sensor business and qualcomm processor business. The core of the design is held internally, and the capital inputs and factory construction for large-scale production are outsourced to external suppliers. There are several major advantages, including without large capital spending mass production product, on the two components layer can rapidly improve the manufacturing technology level, and has the potential to quickly reduce cost on other consumer OLED devices, manufacturing in the factory and the business is more competitive.
Epson was the first pioneer to produce the bt-300 (720P) of AR OLED headgear. The bt-300 not only makes epson"s wearable display products lighter, but also significantly improves the quality and availability of images. Epson USES silicon-based OLED (SiOLED) display technology. The screen is brighter at both ends of the screen, with a wide range of colors, and a high contrast to the Moverio, the previous generation of LCD products.
EMagin has been developing and manufacturing OLED microdisplay products since 1993. For the first time in 2005, they launched the consumer headset Z800 3dvisor, with a small display helmet with SVGA resolution display (40 degree view Angle).
In 2007, the author recommended three products for the viewfinder display using eMagin OLED SVGA, namely si-2k and SI-3D stereo and 360-degree VR camera system.
EMagin"s display has the right brightness and low power consumption, and as a small and light viewfinder can run under a 5V dc power supply (such as a USB power supply). These early OLED displays had some minor flaws in life and aging. It is also considered the most expensive. However, for the best performance requirements, such as military use and functional membrane production, cost is not an important issue. It was just that there were fewer high resolution screens to choose from. Currently, eMagin has several micro display products, ranging from VGA to WUXGA (1920x1200), from 0.5 to 0.77.
In January 2016, eMagin announced that it had signed a non-exclusive patent (IP) licensing agreement with an undisclosed company in its unique 4 MP display. The deal includes upfront royalties of $1 million and promises that the company can use the full color display technology of eMagin"s 2K x 2K pixel on its headset. 2K display technology has not been shown on eMagin"s website.ODG R9 OLED double 1080P.
In the past few weeks, some conceptual video has been circulating, suggesting that the ODG consumer glasses will be equipped with a 4K display (in fact, the dual 2K display will be mistaken for 4K).
EMagin 1080 p display has been put into production, it may also indicate the next generation of 2 k x 2 k display will appear, or, ODG in cost, user interfaces, size, market timing and so on above ODG didn"t find enough mature conditions, to develop suitable products to quickly open the mass consumer market, such as China mobile is one of the goals of the ODG, as the news say they hope to cooperate with China mobile.
The SONY PlayStation VR device is 5.7-inch, 1920 x 1080 OLED display, and the single eye is 960 x 1080 resolution, while Oculus USES a dual 1080 x 1200 resolution.
SONY USES a larger 5.7 "OLED screen on VR glasses Morpheus, which is designed to cost and time to open up the market response. But SONY is still a giant in OLED microdisplay technology, which still produces a large number of tiny OLED panels to supply all their flagship Alpha and NEX digital cameras.
Although it is not yet commercially available, expect SONY to play the CARDS and create a new product line with a higher resolution OLED microdisplay to be used in a new generation of VR or AR devices.
And Snap announced during Christmas 2016, at $3-40000 acquisition of Israel AR (augmented reality) startup Cimagine Media, and with the company team team to set up r&d center in the Middle East, so the only logical conjecture is that they will be taking the doubtful product upgrades for the AR device. If they do, they will need to consider OLED microdisplay technology.

It is the first time that China took over the No. 1 spot in the display market, which Korea has always been a leader in. The title of “the strongest country in display market” is lost after 17 years. It would not be possible to reclaim the No. 1 spot if Korea cannot find a way to expand investment in next-generation displays such as organic light emitting diodes (OLED).
According to market research firm Omdia, China recorded $64.8 billion in sales including LCD and OLED in the global display market last year. China took over Korea’s No. 1 spot with a market share of 41.5%. Korea"s market share fell 8.3 points (p) to 33.2%. This is the first time since 2004, in 17 years, that Korea had to hand over the No. 1 spot. Korea had a 9.4 p advantage in market share over China up until 2019.
After taken over in the LCD market, Korea is focusing on the highly-valued OLED market. Samsung Display and LG Display are transforming their LCD production lines to OLED. Korea is the No. 1 with 82.3% of the global OLED market shares according to Omdia, and China’s market share only accounts for16.6%.
China"s dominance is expected to continue for some time because the large display market such as TVs and laptops still depends on LCD. Only when Korea starts to reduce OLED panel prices by mass producing OLED, then Korea can replace the LCD market led by China.
Samsung Display and LG Display were not able to make a decision on investment plans for large OLED plants due to problems with yield and investment funds. Samsung and LG are expected to invest more than KRW 7 trillion in OLED facilities this year according to the industry. Mass production from these companies is expected to begin in the second half of next year even when new and expanding existing investments are made this year.
China has also started to narrow the gap with Korea in OLED industry. BOE and other companies have commercialized OLED for small and medium-sized displays such as mobile, laptop, and tablet. Following LCD market, China is threatening Korea in OLED market as well as China expands OLED market share mainly in the Chinese smartphone market.
Some criticizes that R&D support and interest are required even if Korean government does not provide subsidies like the Chinese. It is daunting that the government seems to have lost interest in the display industry by giving support for the government’s national talent developing project, and cutting the support for the next-generation display field.
An official from the display industry said, “With the government-led industrial promotion policy and copious domestic market, China is making an effort to solidify its leading position in the display industry. There is a neglect on display industry in Korea since the display promotion policy is almost non-existent compared to semiconductors and batteries.”

The most common semiconducting layer is made of amorphous silicon (a-Si). a-Si thin film transistor - liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) has been the dominant technology for the manufacturing of active matrix TFT-LCD for over 20 years. a-Si is a low cost material in abundant supply.
a-Si is a low cost material in abundant supply. However, the electron mobility of a-Si is very low (around 1cm2/Vs) and can’t physically support high refresh rates such as the 240Hz needed for HDTV. Due to their high electron mobility, new materials such as metal oxide (MO) and low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) are now replacing a-Si to manufacture the industry’s two main types of screens: LCD and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

While Beijing has ploughed vast sums of money into cultivating a domestic chip industry, its fabrication plants, known as fabs, still heavily rely on foreign-made equipment that they use to turn slabs of silicon into chips that power hardware.
