The Verna now comes with an all-new lineup of engines borrowed from other Hyundais. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol with the DCT automatic is borrowed from the Venue. The 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines with manual and automatic transmission have been borrowed from the Creta. The 1.5-litre petrol we are driving can either be had with a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic.
Time then to talk about the engine. And boy oh boy, there is stuff to talk about. Starting with the refinement, this 4-pot motor really puts all the other 3-pot turbos in the market, in their place. There is barely any vibration from the motor throughout the sensible rev band and below 2000rpm, where it mostly operates in the city, you will also barely hear it work. And when you decide to step on it, it revs flawlessly to 6500rpm with a sweet note.
Complementing it beautifully is the CVT. It"s smooth, refined and super quiet. And the best part, it doesn"t behave like typical CVTs. There is hardly any lag between you pressing the paddle and the speeds increasing. This CVT manages to cut out both the lag, as well as the stretched acceleration effect seen in most other CVTs. This is because of two of its characteristics. One, it is an 8-step CVT and while accelerating, changes through the steps in quick succession to keep the momentum going strong. Second, it doesn"t hold high revs and wait for the speeds to match. Rather it builds revs like a torque converter which gives you stronger acceleration.
In fact, compared to the older 1.6-litre Verna petrol with a torque converter automatic, this powertrain is just 1 second slower to 100kmph and does the sprint in 13.04 seconds. That is impressive considering the new motor is down on power by 8PS and uses a CVT to deliver the same. It makes 115PS of power and 144Nm of torque.
On the highway, the acceleration feels a tad lazy which is why we advise planning overtakes in advance. That said, you can overcome this delay by manually downshifting a couple of cogs by sliding the shifter into manual mode. Also, the Verna effortlessly cruises at 1700 rpm at 100kmph, keeping it quiet, pleasant and efficient on the highways.
Having driven the turbo-petrol DCT powertrain in the Venue, I can’t see it offers a smoother drive experience in the city. And in fact, if you are looking for a city-oriented sedan, the 1.5-litre CVT is the less expensive automatic costing Rs 15,000 less than the turbo-petrol.
Verna has always offered a very balanced suspension setup. In this facelift, however, it looks like things have shifted further towards the comfort side. It feels at ease going over daily hurdles like broken roads or speed breakers. The Verna provides ample cushioning and manages to settle down quickly post those hurdles as well. What it really manages to do well is filter out the harshness of the surface. Even if you go over a level change a bit faster than usual, it still manages to keep the occupants well-cushioned and away from a backache. In these situations, a thud can be heard inside the cabin, but the bitterness of the bump is not felt. On the highways, the Verna stays composed and will remain comfortable for long journeys as well.
With this setup, it"s natural that there will be a bit of body roll. But luckily, it’s predictable and doesn"t get bothersome in daily drives. Under an enthusiast’s command, it will roll a bit more but that too settles quickly and doesn"t get scary at any point. The steering feedback is exactly as neutral as the suspension. It has been tuned for the city and highways and gives just enough feedback and weight to stay in confidence. But if you are in a mood to play, the feedback will feel a bit lacking.

The Kratos R offers the same seating ergonomics as a 160cc motorcycle – the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, for example. The saddle height is easy to access. Once on it, the wide handlebar is easy to reach. The foot-pegs are slightly rear-seat and that means, you get a sporty but comfortable riding position. But there’s one weird feeling on this bike – the lack of a rear brake pedal. It takes a while to get used to the braking experience.
Now coming to the most important bit. How is the Kratos R to ride? Well, there are two modes – eco and sport. The Kratos R behaves like a 125cc commuter motorcycle in the eco mode. The power is there, but not so much to overtake vehicles quickly. It takes a while to reach high speeds, and the effort is much more with a pillion. And in case there’s an uphill, the eco mode will definitely make you reach your destination a little later than expected. But on the upside, the eco mode will give you the maximum riding range. Our bike showed 102km at the time of picking it up. The sport mode, however, is interesting, fun, and engaging. The torque delivery can be felt instantly, and the power delivery continues to surge aggressively till it hits the limiter. But in this model, the range began dropping excessively, which clearly indicated that the sport mode should not be used too often. The reverse mode works fairly well too. Not too quick to engage and nor does it reach high speed.
The Kratos R is one agile motorcycle, and we believe this is a result of the great frame geometry and weight distribution. Be it at the commuting time or going aggressively on corners, the Kratos R behaves extremely well and stays planted. However, the ride on the Kratos R should have been slightly better at the back. It is comfortable, but should have been a bit plusher. Now coming to the brakes, the low-speed performance is apt but at high speeds, the brakes tend to show their weaknesses. That said, the CBS system works better only in city riding conditions.

The two buzzwords the tech world has been chatting about for a number of years now is IPS, (In-Plane Switching) screen technology used for liquid crystal displays or LCD’s for short, and TFT (Thin-Film-Transistor) an active matrix screen technology, which is more expensive, but a sharper image.
Designed in the 1980’s, but not introduced until nearly a decade later, in 1996, by Hitachi, IPS technology is nothing new, and a type of LCD design that affords greater viewing angles and higher-quality color reproduction than the traditional TN or Twisted Nematic LCDs.
When Apple brought it to the public’s attention, it took off, and as they say, the rest is history; but, it really didn’t become widespread or worldwide until just the late 1990’s. Since then, IPS screens have been implemented in homes all over the world, with variations to suit one’s electronic needs.
TFT (Thin-Film-Transistor) Liquid Crystal Display is a thin display type, where a transistor embedded into each crystal gate; these transistors are then printed on thin-transparent film. The technology was designed to improve image qualities, such as contrast and addressability.
Also designed in the late 1980’s, TFT display technologies is just another variation of LCD displays that offer greater color, contrast, and response times as opposed to available passive matrix LCD’s. One of the primary differences between IPS and TFT display technologies is the cost. IPS is more expensive than TN technology. However, there are some key differences between the two that should be noted.
Before we go into the differences, let’s talk about features of each technology. Note that we’re not talking TVs, computer, or tablets, but screens on a much smaller scale, (think 7” or smaller) which uses different rules to fit that scale. First, it’s interesting to discover that the TFT display technologies is the most common type of color display technology; more monochrome displays still out-sell color, due to lower cost and lower power consumption, however, the narrow poor visibility of TFTs in direct sunlight is their downside; but I’m getting ahead of myself here.
IPS technology has come a long way in regards to cell phones and other LCD screens that are even much smaller. (Picture digital clocks on a radio, microwave, and hand-held games) Some of the features of an IPS screen include:Wider viewing angles – crystals are aligned horizontally rather than vertically, so it allows for better angled viewing, perfect for smaller screens, where you need to rotate the screen for better viewing
Lower power consumption, resulting in longer battery life – again for smaller screens, this works great, because even though this technology requires more power, a smaller screen has less power drain.
Brilliant color image – this is a huge advance in technology, from a Twisted Nematic (TN) display that only produced 6-bit color, to an 8-bit color display with the IPS technology
Variations to help with user’s viewing requirements or desires – there are several different forms of IPS technology: Super-IPS, (S-IPS) Advanced Super IPS, Advanced S-IPS, where the liquid crystal molecules stay parallel to the front and back panels, instead of perpendicular when a voltage is applied
TFT display technologies have developed over the years and have become quite popular in tech circles. The features offered with this advancing technology are:Superior color display – for technology that requires it or for consumers that desire color screens
Features a longer half-life, (half-life is the amount of time in hours before the display is 50% as bright as when it was first turned on), than OLEDs and comes in varying sizes, from under an inch up to over 15 inches
Capacitive Touchscreen or touch panel, which is in the majority of Smartphones and allows for additional functionality, specifically for zooming and scrolling
Aspect ratio control, which refers to a screen’s ability to maintain an aspect ratio of a source image at the hardware level, and 1:1 pixel mapping, used to literally “map” the exact number of pixels specifically in the source resolution to pixels on the screen
Variety of displays, which can be interfaced through a variety of bus types, including 18 and 24 bit for red/green/blue, LVDS, and 8 bit and 16 bit for a CPU – many controllers allow for two or more different types of interfaces on the same TFT screen
Okay, now that we’ve covered the features of both technologies, let’s look at the differences between the two. Before we get into the spec differences, let’s first address the main difference: the arrangement of transistors and liquid crystal. Seems vague, doesn’t it?
Let me explain. As you can see, both have excellent color display and clarity; however, IPS screens offer greater color reproduction and viewing angles because of the way crystal orientation and polarizers are arranged. In a TFT screen, the structure of the crystals results in angular retardation in the light. The IPS screens thus offer less distortion properties. Other differences include power consumption and cost. With IPS screens, it takes more power (up to 15% more) than with a TFT screen. If you’re on a monitor, such as a computer screen that’s bigger than 7 inches, it will drain your battery faster than if you’re on a 3.5” screen. Regarding cost, IPS panels are more expensive to produce than TFT panels.
Here’s why:IPS screens are popular and in high demand with professionals including surgeons and photographers or pretty much any profession that requires color reproduction, therefore, because the demand is high, the price goes up. (way to love economics) Also, less manufactures are building IPS at this time.
The color channels increase from 6 bits (TN displays) to 8 bits (IPS displays) to ensure the precision of shades per color channel, thus increasing manufacturing costs
If you want the benefits of having a Smartphone without a huge price tag, then TFT devices are your best bet. Another difference is that IPS screens have longer response times than TFT screens, so the lag output is greater. A few other key differences to be aware of are that with IPS panels, you get a bigger variety of panels, as was discussed above, with their super, advanced, and so forth developments, giving the consumer options, and IPS screens that can display 24-bit TrueColor; they also stay color-accurate and remain stable.
So, are you ready to delve into the pros and cons of these two technologies? Granted, we’ve touched on their features and differences, but now it’s time to ask yourself, which one is better for me or my business?
We’ve been talking largely about Smartphone screens, but since both technologies work on smaller screens, such as clocks and timers or digital thermometers, let’s focus on those.
Because of their superior color and clarity of images, devices using an IPS screens are easy to install on walls, due to their compact form and low-depth. The Super IPS screens offer a higher angle of 170˚ for better clarity and wider viewing, particularly at night. Images remain stable and clear and not sparkly, shiny, like other screens; they also have a longer battery life and screen life, (on smaller screens of course) because of the lower electrical output. The release of heat is lower, again because of the reduced electrical consumption. The colors are also more vibrant and clear, not pixelated like other lower quality-type devices. As mentioned earlier, there are also many variations of IPS technology to suit your needs and desires.
Now we will go over the downside of IPS screens, which we briefly touched on above, which includes a major disadvantage: cost. If you’re just looking for an average Smartphone or don’t need all the fancy coloring and clarity for LCD displays, then cost may not be a big factor; however, this is the main reason why IPS technology is beginning to come down. As with every new invention, discovery or technology, demand is everything. Another disadvantage is that colors may not always transcribe correctly or accurately, which may or may not be a deterrent. Also, high resolutions are not always readily available for personal applications. In certain circumstances, the brightness may not be enough, especially in darkness.
Steve Jobs said it best: “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” I tend to agree with him. With TFT display technologies, less energy consumption is a big deal, especially when dealing with bigger screens, and of course less electricity means lower cost, overall. The visibility is sharper, meaning no geometric distortion, which is great for these tired, old eyes. The response time and physical design of the screens are also appealing. TFT displays can also save space and be placed virtually anywhere in an office or home, because of the brightly lit feature and crisp clear images.
Some cons of TFT screens deal with the viewing angle, which create distortion, resulting in a less-than-perfect image. Static resolution, meaning the resolution can’t be changed, may also cause a problem, but newer models seem to have tackled that issue. The accuracy of the display of colors is not perfect, specifically strong blacks and bright whites, so when printing an image, it may not display the spectrum of colors.
And there you have it. In the future, even this superb technology will change and new, more exciting technology will take its place. But until then, IPS & TFT screens are forging ahead with their own advances and improvements, so stayed tune. You don’t want to miss it.

The most important change in the new Swift is the engine. All the traits of the 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine are the same. But this is a K12 Dual Jet Dual VVT motor – one that also does duties in the Dzire. As a result, power is up by 7bhp to 89bhp while the max torque of 113Nm remains the same. The Dual VVT in the engine nomenclature stands for ‘variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valve’. With an improved EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system and idle-start-stop function, the new motor is not only more powerful but also more efficient, claims Maruti. The manual version we have here has a claimed ARAI fuel efficiency of 23.20kmpl, while the AMT version is good for 23.76kmpl.
With the bump in power, the new Swift posted a slightly quicker 0-100kmph time of 11.75 seconds compared to 12.26 seconds of the old car. In terms of roll-on acceleration, it did 20-80kmph in third in 14.35 seconds and 40-100kmph in fourth in 16.90 seconds. At idle, the four-cylinder engine is refined and completely vibe-free to a point that you’ll have to double-check whether the engine is on. Get on the move and the refinement continues with good grunt both in the low and mid-range. Since there’s no turbo, there’s no lag of any sort and the power delivery is linear. The motor revs freely to redline, it might get noisy past 4,000rpm, but the corresponding noise isn’t accompanied by any unpleasant vibration. The motor feels the best between 1,500-2,500rpm and you can potter around in a gear too high at city speeds without the motor stuttering and urging you to downshift. This K12 unit is peppy and responsive even from low engine speeds. Even highway speeds come up quickly and easily if you hold a gear a bit longer and overtaking at triple-digit is no hassle either.
It’s a refined engine through and through, and you can experience it while downshifting or engine braking where it neatly dials down without making any fuss. Moreover, the new idle-start-stop function works brilliantly. Pull up to a traffic signal, slot in neutral and get on the brakes, and it kills the engine immediately. To pull away, just depress the clutch and the engine is back to life in no time. It works flawlessly every single time. Like before, the clutch is light and complements the five-speed manual gearbox we have here. The short and precise throw of the gear lever makes it extremely fun to drive. We love how smooth and crisp it is when rowing through the gears and it’s enjoyable rather than a task to drive this manual.
Going almost three and a half turns lock-to-lock, the new Swift’s steering is light and slightly vague off-centre. It’s not slow to respond though and has a direct feel once you start pushing it. Show it some corners and the well-balanced chassis and controlled body roll are good enough to induce a wide grin each time. In terms of ride, the new Swift has a good composure at slow speeds going over bad surface. Only the sharpest potholes are felt on the inside. Otherwise, everything else is taken astride with good poise. And it only gets better as speed increases. Another good thing about it is that the ride remains consistent so you can predict the speed you’d like to take on a bad patch or speed breaker beforehand. It’s a light car – thanks to the new Heartect platform – and it is felt as the high-speed stability isn’t something to write home about.
