LCD Firmware is the software code that allows the LCD’s controller to communicate with the customer’s processor. When a customer first designs their end product, they write the firmware for a specific controller.

The challenge comes when the controller on a LCD module is discontinued and replaced with an equivalent controller. The LCD firmware that was written for the original controller may or may not be 100% compatible with the new controller. The majority of the time a customer can swap out the old controller for the new without any issues.

If you do need to modify the LCD firmware for your Character, and Graphic displays, you might want to keep in mind that current product out in the field which contain LCD displays will still need the old controller. When you find out that a controller is being discontinued and the suggested replacement "equivalent" controller is not a drop-in equivalent, and the firmware needs to be modified; it might be wise to order extra displays with the old controller to have in stock to serve as replacements for the products you have out in the field.

Segment displays do not contain a controller and therefore do not require any firmware. This includes 7(seven) segment LCD display, 14(fourteen) segment LCD display, and 16(sixteen) segment LCD displays.

Character LCD Modules do contain controllers. This includes 8x1 LCD displays, 8x2 LCD displays, 16x1 LCD displays, 16x2 LCD displays, 16x4 LCD displays, 20x2 LCD displays, 20x4 LCD displays, 24x2 LCD displays, 40x1 LCD displays, 40x2 LCD displays, and 40x4 LCD displays.

Before you get involved with LCD display programming, its critical you first choose the correct LCD display for your product. All LCD modules can be classified into one of two categories: those requiring a controller/driver chip and those that don"t.

Displays requiring a controller/driver chip to interface with your product require a programmer to write software code, sometimes referred to as firmware, to connect the LCD to the end product. Those that have a controller/driver are much easier and faster to program. Specifically, this article will address programming the character or alphanumeric displays with a parallel bus (a parallel bus LCD sends and receives 4 bits, 8 bits or 16 bits of data at a time).

The second category, those that don"t require a controller/driver chip, are called static or segment displays. This means that there is one connection on the LCD for each segment. Although this eliminates the controller chip, it requires a great deal of connections between the display and the customers product.

So what exactly is this all important piece of technology—the controller/driver (C/D)—that will make your life easier through quick and simple programming? It is a small microprocessor whose function is to convert the designers’ firmware/software into characters, numbers, and punctuation marks. The C/D makes it easy for the product designer to quickly program the character display. Inside each C/D is a character table, sometimes referred to as a character map or font table, which contains pre-loaded letters, numbers, and punctuation. The table allows the designer to call out the requested character by addressing the number of that character. In other words, the letter ‘T’ may be the number 27 and the n-dash (i.e. “-”) could be number 122. This eliminates the need to create each character from scratch and reduces the amount of time necessary to program the LCD module. In the font table shown below, the letter ‘P’ would be displayed when the designer calls the number sequence below.

D0=0, D1=0, D2=0, D3=0, D4 =0, D5=0, D6=1, D7=1. The letter Do, D1 and so on above means data bit 0, data bit 1 etc. Most character displays use eight data bits.

There are several manufactures of C/D’s including Seiko, Epson, Toshiba, and Sunplus. There are distinct advantages of having multiple makers in multiple places in the world. Specifically, you won’t have to worry about a delay in the supply chain that is the result from the constraint of the C/D being made by only one or two manufacturers. You don’t want anything to delay the launch of your product.

Character LCD displays contain 14 pins if no backlight is attached and 16 pins when an EL or LED backlight is included with the module. Below is a breakdown of each pin and the function of that pin. The function of these pins directly relates to your success at programming character LCD displays, so pay attention!

The Ground is necessary for the voltage and the contrast adjust to reference. Ground, also referred to as zero volts, is required on all electronic devices. Electrical ground is similar to the ground floor of a tall building. All the floors above the ground floor are positive and all the floors below the ground floor, the basement, are negative. The ground pin on the LCD is connected to the ground on the customer’s product

This is the Logic voltage necessary to drive the LCD. There are two common voltages for a character LCD, 3.3V (this is equal to two "aa" batteries in series) and 5V.

It is possible to order a character LCD with both a positive and negative voltage. This option is not very common and is seen in replacing older discontinued displays.

We do not recommend using the same Ground and VDD connections to supply both your LCD logic and your LED backlight. It is better to use a separate power for your backlight which is what pins 15 and 16 or the A and K tab on the side of the LCD are designed for.

The RW line is the "Read/Write" control line. When RW is low (0), the information on the data bus is being written to the LCD. When RW is high (1), the program is effectively querying (or reading) the LCD. Only one instruction ‘check LCD status’ is a read command. All others are write commands--so RW will almost always be set to low.

The data bits on a parallel LCD display can accept up to 8 bits of data at a time. It is possible to use just four of the eight data bits if your microcontroller lacks enough connections to drive all 8 bits; however, this is a slow transfer of information. The data bit lines are numbered DB and begin at number DB0, DB1 etc. up to DB7.

The anode is the positive voltage for the backlight, while the K is the ground for the backlight. You have options when it comes to ordering your backlights; you can order an LCD display with either a 3.3V LED backlight or a 4.2V LED backlight.

One key component in LCD display programming is to make sure the controller driver you have designed will continue in production. Over time C/D suppliers will discontinue various models. So, the issue you solved with maintaining a steady supply chain does crop up again when models become obsolete. To mitigate the inconvenience, when the IC is discontinued, the LCD supplier will recommend a replacement or compatible controller. This is where the word ‘compatible’ does not mean ‘exact drop in equivalent’; however, we find that a compatible controller is an exact match 95% of the time. If you find yourself in that unlucky 5%, then you will either need to make a last-time buy of the controller that is being discontinued or change the software on your product to match the new controller.

This product supports Windows 10/8.1/8/7 operation systems. For the Windows 10/8.1/8 OS, the touch screen supports multi-touch up to 10 points. For some Window 7 OS, the touch screen supports single touch only.

Before powering up the Banana Pi, you should connect it to a LCD displayer properly, since the Banana Pi may read the resolution parameters of the LCD displayer on startup. And the connection should be remained till the Banana Pi enters the desktop. This article explains how to update the GPU firmware for Resizable BAR compatibility on GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs from NVIDIA and our partners. Contact your GPU vendor if you have further support questions not covered by this article.

Resizable BAR is an optional PCI Express interface technology. NVIDIA has created a downloadable GPU firmware update tool for GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs to enable Resizable BAR. The tool will detect whether a firmware update is supported, and if supported, will give the user the option to update it.

Prior to running the tool, make sure the newest Game Ready Driver is installed. Ensure power is connected and stable during the update. Save open files and do not turn off your PC.

Once you have the tool downloaded, please run the tool and follow the on-screen instructions. When running the tool, a console window will be displayed with instructions. While performing the update, the screen may flicker or temporarily go blank.

On the bottom left of the NVIDIA Control Panel, simply click “System Information”, and in the new window look for “Resizable BAR” on the right. If it says “Yes”, you’re set.

If the BAR value is set to the size of my GPU’s framebuffer (ie: 10GB), does that mean a game will be using all that (10GB) for BAR? No. The BAR value is used as a cap or ceiling for the total amount of BAR that can be used by the game.

Why would I want to change the BAR values from whatever is default today? In general, BAR allocations can have a positive impact on performance in certain games.

IMPORTANT: This update is for the Focus Blue 5th generation braille displays. DO NOT install this firmware on older Focus 14 Blue, Focus 40 Blue, or Focus 80 Blue 4th Generation braille displays. The 5th generation Focus Blue braille displays have a Menu button between keys 1 and 4 on the Perkins-style keyboard. If your display has a Menu button, follow these instructions to upgrade the display.

When saving a file for the first time in Scratchpad, you are now asked if you want to save using TXT/BRF/BRL/BRA format. If you want to save using one of these formats, press Y, use the Rocker bars, NAV Rockers, or Cursor Routers to select a format (dots 7 and 8 are used to indicate the selected format), and press DOT 8. After choosing the file format, type a name for your file, and then press DOT 8. Files saved in one of these formats can be opened and modified on a PC.

If you do not want to save the file in a specific format, press N, type a name for your file, and press DOT 8. This saves the file with an FNZ extension. FNZ files can only be read and edited in Scratchpad. However, the contents of FNZ files can be exported to any open editing application over an active USB or Bluetooth connection.

Note: The BRA format is only available if the Focus language is set to Spanish. Additionally, as you work in your file, make sure to enter content in a way that matches the file type you want to save as. For instance, if you intend to save a file in TXT format, it is suggested that content be written using Computer Braille and not literary or contracted braille. This ensures the file displays correctly when opened on your computer.

Resolved an issue where the cursor was unexpectedly moved to the beginning of the document instead of remaining at your current location when saving (RIGHT SHIFT+S).

When selecting characters that include a dot 7 or 8 such as a capital letter, addressed an issue where the dot 7 or 8 portion of the character was not displayed as part of the selection If Scratchpad was configured to hide dots 7 and 8.

When opening or deleting a file, you can now use DOTS 1-2-3 CHORD or DOTS 4-5-6 CHORD to move to the top or bottom of the files list. You can also use first letter navigation to help you quickly locate a specific file.

Display the current page and number of pages in the file (requires that files include page break characters which should be available in most formatted books from services like BARD): RIGHT SHIFT+P (DOTS 1-2-3-4)

In addition to using RIGHT SHIFT+DOT 4 to find the next occurrence of a word or phrase in a file, you can now press RIGHT SHIFT+DOT 8 CHORD to find the previous occurrence of text. Alternatively, use the new Find Previous option in the Edit menu.

Word Wrap – When enabled, Scratchpad does not split a word that is too large to be shown on the braille display and instead shows the entire word when you pan to the next increment. This option is off by default.

Hide Cursor – When enabled, the cursor, which is represented by dots 7 and 8, is not displayed. If a Cursor Router is pressed while the cursor is hidden, the cursor briefly flashes at that location. By default, the cursor is always displayed.

Hide Dots 7 and 8 – Dots 7 and 8 are used to indicate capitalization and other special symbols. Additionally, formatted braille (BRF) books produced by some agencies in the United States such as Bookshare.org and the National Library Service use characters that include dots 7 and 8. To help reduce distraction while reading, you can enable this option to suppress dots 7 and 8 so they are not displayed as part of the text. This option is off by default.

The new one-handed mode feature allows users who are unable to enter data using two hands to use the Focus display. To turn this feature on or off, use the One-Handed Mode item in the display configuration menu, or toggle it by pressing LEFT SHIFT+DOTS 1-2-3-7 or RIGHT SHIFT+DOTS 4-5-6-8. Once enabled, one-handed operation works with Focus-specific features such as Scratchpad, or when using the Focus to interact with applications on a computer or mobile device.

In one-handed mode, enter commands or Braille characters one key at a time; or enter as many keys together as you find comfortable; then press the SPACEBAR when finished. For example, individually pressing DOTS 1-2-3-5, followed by the SPACEBAR types a letter R. If you are entering data and need to enter the Space character, press the SPACEBAR twice.

If you need to enter a chord combination, press the SPACEBAR, then the keys that make up the chord, then press the SPACEBAR again. For example, to go to the beginning of a file, press the SPACEBAR, followed by DOTS 1-2-3, followed once more by the SPACEBAR.

The Focus now supports Flash Messages, which are short informational messages that appear on the display for only a few seconds. For instance, Scratchpad displays flash messages in a variety of situations including when confirming a file was saved or deleted. Flash messages disappear automatically after a short time, but you can dismiss one at any time by pressing a Cursor Router. If you need more time to finish reading a message, press one of the Panning buttons to keep the message on the display longer.

Using the link at the end of this procedure, download and save the firmware update file to a location on your computer where you can easily find it, for example, your Downloads folder.

Scratchpad is a Focus Blue utility. If a Micro SD card (up to 32 GB) is inserted into the display, Scratchpad enables you to enter notes using plain text or contracted braille. No USB or Bluetooth connection is required to use Scratchpad. For example, if you need to quickly write down a phone number, but you do not have immediate access to your PC or mobile device, you can launch Scratchpad on your Focus, write down the phone number using the Perkins-style keyboard, and then save it to a file on the Micro SD card.

Scratchpad offers basic file navigation and editing functions including cut, copy, and paste. You can also search for text in the currently open file. Additionally, if the Focus is currently connected to a computer or other device over USB or Bluetooth, you can export the contents of the current file to the edit window of the currently open application.

Before you can use Scratchpad, you must insert a Micro SD card into the Focus display as files you create are saved directly to the card. BRF books will also need to be copied to the card for reading in the Scratchpad. The Focus supports Micro SD cards up to 32 GB. To insert a Micro SD card, do the following:

Hold the card so that the fingernail grip (the raised edge used to grab and remove the card) is pointed toward you and facing down. You will also feel a slight protrusion on the left side as well as a square cutout in the upper left corner. In addition, the printed label on the card should be facing down.

Once the card is inserted, do the following to download and transfer the Scratchpad Help to the card so you can access the documentation right on your display from inside the utility:

Using the link at the end of this procedure, download and save the Focus5-SDCard file to a location on your computer where you can easily find it, for example, your Downloads folder.

Power the Focus off and back on and simultaneously press the Menu button and the letter N (DOTS 1-3-4-5). Scratchpad opens to a blank file where you can immediately begin entering text. To open the help file, simultaneously press the Right Shift button and the letter H (DOTS 1-2-5).

In this model of the HDMI LCD display, on the display board, we have a few additional connectors. You can connect an external keyboard and there is also a Backlight PMW & Power connector for the brightness setting. As many industrial computers have the PMW output, the system can control the brightness of the display, so you can setup one setting internally but also provide it from an external source.
