When our customers are in the preliminary stages of launching a new SMART HMI project, they typically reach out seeking advice on the best way to start. With what can amount to a near infinite number of HMI design options and system feature combinations, brainstorming an embedded firmware project can quickly become overwhelming. Where does one begin? How does the firmware work? What level of detail is required now?

The most important lesson when dealing with firmware and software development is summed up by the saying “garbage in – garbage out”. What this means is that we, Epec, are not experts in our customers product or application. We are experts at interpreting clients" requirements and creating an executable project plan while educating on the pros, cons, risks, opportunities, and many other design options that can help solve our customers" design goals. This creates a critical need for our customers to formulate a requirements matrix of the system that includes the multitude of “must have” and “nice to have” design features in order to begin to manage costs. It is vital to gather as much detail as possible to be able to deliver the custom SMART HMI that our customer needs.

Going hand in hand with the requirements matrix creation is the goal to completely capture what the SMART HMI should do. Some products may purely function as a switch, where they interpret 9 switch actuations and send those “ON/CLOSE” switch statuses elsewhere. A robust firmware solution can do much more by creating locally interpreted and executed commands such as turning on the backlighting of a display when a switch is held down for 5 seconds or more. More complex examples include functions like triggering an alarm and flashing a warning message if a sensed temperature exceeds 100 degrees, or even diagnosing failures in a pump and prompting error messages. Firmware can truly execute a near infinite number of actions as long as there is sufficient power, hardware, and the robust code to drive it.

HMI displays range in complexity from simple discrete illuminated LEDs, to segmented alphanumeric LEDs, all the way to monochrome LCD screens and colorized touchscreens. The type of display can drive component selection, board layout, power, and I/O connections. Firmware can be impacted just as much so it is important to specify early on the type of display as this will go hand in hand with how the source code is prepared.

Spend ample time to identify the requirements to a fine detail. All interfaces need to be identified and documented. The project should not proceed until all parties agree to these requirements. This cannot be overemphasized.

Safety critical interfaces must be identified and addressed. Machine damage and, more importantly, human life may need to be considered. This includes accounting for SELV (safety extra-low voltage) requirements as well as firmware code to execute a command that would shut off power during a hazardous event.

The addition of a design verification step should be considered to ensure all the requirements are met. Typically, this should be an ongoing practice performed during firmware development by the code author. At the completion of the projection a design verification document should be completed that describes, in detail, how the firmware complies with the requirements matrix, item by item and requirement by requirement.

A careful assessment of the product service life should be considered to safeguard against lost tribal knowledge pertaining to the code. Quite often the original author is no longer available when it matters most. The developer should provide ample design documentation during firmware development to ensure efficient firmware maintenance for the future. As field released and BETA versions are stressed, maintaining proper revision control and notations within the documentation in a simple readme.txt file can save significant financial resources in the future.

When writing firmware, the tools (aka compilers) used should be documented and archived. These tool vendors can also go “obsolete” in the future just like components. Archiving said tool set is important because if future firmware modifications are necessary, one should use the EXACT tool set that was used on the original, regardless of tool set version updates. There are instances where these new updated tool sets will break the firmware functionality (sometimes this occurs in a subtle manner). This can create the need for expensive regression testing.

This list can change daily, and one would likely receive different lists of “must have” and “nice to have” functionality depending on the disciplines of the parties asked. For example, the marketing department’s primary concern could be color matching, logo placement, or the ability to run off battery power for 12 hours. Conversely, engineers primary concerns could be the ability to survive a drop from 6 feet or pass a 15kV ESD discharge.

The instructions for this firmware update was that it fixed the issue where the position of the cursor does not display correctly on the screen while using touchpad. Hopefully you installed it for that reason.

Have you tried an external monitor? Are you able to see your information with the external monitor? If so, you may wish to uninstall the update and revert back to the original configuration. Then run systems diagnostics to troubleshoot that touchpad issue prior to downloading the update again.

This document applies to some older HP LaserJet business printers. For instructions on how to update the firmware for a newer HP LaserJet Enterprise or HP LaserJet Pro model, go to one of the following links:

If you have a third-party solution, HP recommends contacting the vendor to make sure that the latest firmware version is compatible with the third-party solution.

If the firmware update involves a change in the format of the nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM), make sure to back up any menu settings that have been changed from the default setting. These settings might return to the new default settings and must be reconfigured after the update. For a list of settings that might be impacted by the firmware update, see the Readme file.

The HP LaserJet firmware download available from www.hp.com contains firmware for the printer, embedded JetDirect (if applicable), and HP paper handling accessories used with the printer in one convenient file.

Use the links in the HP FutureSmart - Latest Firmware Versions document to go directly to the printer download page, download the firmware, and then extract all files.

The HP Printer Utility is a software program that gives you access to the printer in mac OS X. The HP Printer Utility is available in mac OS X 10.11 by downloading the latest installer from the following Web sites: www.hp.com/support/cljcm6030mfp or www.hp.com/support/cljcm6040mfp

The HP Printer Utility does not work when it is installed by using the AppleTalk protocol. Use IP, Bonjour, Rendezvous, or a USB connection to enable the HP Printer Utility.

This can take about five minutes. Do not interact with the printer or the computer during the update process. When the update has finished, the printer will reboot.

If the file name or path includes a space, you must enclose the file name or path in quotation marks. For example, type put "/user name/desktop/". Type put and type a space, and then drag and drop the .RFU file onto the terminal window to ensure that the entire proper path to the .RFU file is placed in the put command. The complete path to the file is automatically placed after the put command.

HP Web Jetadmin can be configured to get firmware details from hp.com directly. Use Tools, Options, Shared, Network, HTTP to add HTTP proxy details (if needed) and to enable Allow download. Allow download is required for HP Web Jetadmin to communicate with the Internet. After these settings are enabled, HP Web Jetadmin may be able to get firmware listing and firmware image files directly from HP.com if this is allowed on the network where HP Web Jetadmin is running.

If the client PC does not have internet access, the firmware files can also be downloaded from HP.com to a local PC and then transferred to the client machine. After transferring the files to the client machine, see section Manually import firmware files into WJA.

Do NOT interrupt or turn the printer off during the update process. When the update is complete, the printer will automatically reboot. If the firmware update process fails or is interrupted for reasons such as a power outage, it can be completely recovered by running the firmware download again and reinitiating the download. Web JetAdmin will display a notification with information about the failure and a link to retry the process.

If you do not want to use the latest version of firmware and only want to use a known version that has been tested with the fleet, select the Qualify image check box and click OK.

RECEIVING UPGRADEThis message displays from the time the printer recognizes the beginning of an .RFU update until the time the printer has verified the validity and integrity of the .RFU update.

If the remote firmware update process is interrupted before the firmware is downloaded (before or during the RECEIVING UPGRADE message displays on the control panel), then the firmware file must be sent again.

Hardware manufacturers regularly release firmware updates so their devices remain secure and compatible with new media. For example, Android and iOS devices periodically get firmware updates that enhance their performance, add new features, and protect them against security threats and vulnerabilities. Updates for firmware for devices like game consoles and televisions are typically done by accepting prompts to download and install the latest patch.

Subsystems: These are semi-independent devices that are part of a more extensive system. Firmware at this level is embedded within central processing units (CPUs), flash chips, and liquid crystal display (LCD) units.

When a computer is turned on, the BIOS launches instructions that check the machine’s startup process for potential errors. It starts by checking the random access memory (RAM) and processor for faults, then checks connected devices, such as a keyboard and mouse, for any problems. It then checks for a boot sequence, such as Boot from Compact Disc Read-Only Memory (CD-ROM) and Boot from Hard Drive. Finally, the BIOS connects to the bootloader program, which wakes up the computer’s operating system and loads it in the RAM.

The original EFI firmware is used in Macs and can only support Intel processors. Unified EFI (UEFI) is a piece of firmware designed to replace the BIOS in new Windows computers and supports AMD and Intel processors. UEFI is used to load and start up operating systems in devices that run Windows 8 and beyond.

Understanding what firmware a device has is crucial to keeping the machine updated. The firmware version of a Windows device can be accessed through the command prompt using an upgrade assistant.

The Firmware Upgrade Wizard is the most universal and preferred method of updating. If a previous version of the Firmware Upgrade Wizard or Firmware Images are installed, delete the old version and download the latest revision.

Note: UPS models with only USB communication port will have to wait for the next release of the FIRMWARE UPGRADE WIZARDwhich is expected to launch very shortly.

Every Smart-UPS has a unique UPS ID. This can be found in the "About" menu on the UPS LCD screen, or in the NMC web interface. The same models of UPS may have different UPS IDs depending on when they were produced.

The Firmware Upgrade Wizard will select the correct version for the unit you are updating. Note: it is not recommended to perform a firmware downgrade to a lower firmware version than the current UPS firmware.

If updating a UPS unit due to a "Needs Firmware Update" or "Battery Sys Error 0800" alarm, the external battery packs MUST be connected when performing the update. If more external battery packs are connected at a later date and the issue returns, the firmware update must be performed again with all battery packs connected. Updating an SRT UPS unit may take up to 20 minutes to complete. The more external battery packs are connected, the longer the update may take. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE UPS COMMUNICATION CABLE, REBOOT THE COMPUTER, OR ATTEMPT TO TURN OFF THE UPS DURING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE.

Note: Verify the hash key of the Firmware Upgrade Wizard after downloading. The current hash value is 6d70c461f03a35a975daf5e606f794b6. Open Command Prompt.

Change the directory to the folder where the downloaded Smart-UPS_Firmware_Upgrade_Wizard_v4.3.2.exe was saved: This is typically done using he "cd" command

For example, if the Smart-UPS_Firmware_Upgrade_Wizard_v4.3.2.exe file was saved to the Downloads folder, the command may look like: "cd C:\Users\Username\Downloads", or "cd Downloads"
