This display has a controller built into it with RAM buffering so that almost no work is done by the microcontroller. The display can be used in two modes: 8-bit or SPI. For 8-bit mode, you"ll need 8 digital data lines and 4 or 5 digital control lines to read and write to the display (12 lines total). SPI mode requires only 5 pins total (SPI data in, data out, clock, select, and d/c) but is slower than 8-bit mode.

I bought a couple of these after reading an article in Nuts & Volts issue 2, 2019. I was hoping to upgrade some of my existing projects from 16x and 20x4 LCD displays. Loaded up the proper libraries into my Arduino IDE, plugged one of the LCD panels in a MEGA and loaded one of the demo pieces of code. It appeared the LCD was damaged in shipment, and it did not work. I replaced it with the second LCD and was very happy to see a rather nice demo working, showing quiet a few capabilities of the LCD panel.
