From a small off-roading outfit to a global superstar, KTM has grown exponentially in the 21st century, and is still the king of off-roading motorcycles. However, for Indians, it is the brand that blew our minds away with power-packed machines like the 200 Duke, 390 Duke and RC 390.

Thanks to its partnership with Bajaj, the brand came into operation in the country in 2012 with the 200 Duke. It was unlike any other naked motorcycle of the time. And a year later, we got the 390 Duke, which continues to be the quickest sub-400cc naked available in the country. It wasn’t just mind-blowing performance that KTM brought along with it, we also got sportbike-level hardware at really affordable prices. Items like a USD fork, radial front disc caliper, radial tyres and switchable ABS, we sort of got our first taste on the Dukes.

In recent times, KTMs have gotten rather expensive. Even the 125 Duke, which is the most affordable KTM on sale, is frighteningly expensive. Only a few models justify their steep asking price well.

Nakeds - The Dukes have been the go-to sport machines for enthusiasts for over half a decade in India. Right from the smallest 125 Duke to the manic 390 Duke, each one of these nakeds adheres to KTM’s ‘Ready To Race’ mantra well. The 200 Duke has been a darling of Indian riders and if you are looking for a little sensibility from your Duke, the 250 Duke has you covered.

Sport Bikes - From being one-trick ponies to accommodating everyday sport bikes, the KTM RCs have grown up a lot. Sure, the new look isn’t everyone’s cuppa, but what the bikes promise now is a more welcoming stance and easier riding dynamics.

ADVs - These weren’t quite the adventure bikes that we had expected. Nevertheless, the 250 Adventure and 390 Adventure are KTM’s sole off-road-centric bikes on sale in India. They give you a small taste of what the Austrian bike maker is capable of and hopefully, will be the start of something better in the future.

We expect KTM’s big bike portfolio to grow in the coming years. From the 490s to the 890s and larger, KTM is likely going to offer Dukes, RCs and Adventure models for most of its engine formats. KTM is also working closely with Bajaj for electric mobility, although that project is likely to bear fruit only a few years later.

The new fuel tank, which KTM refers to as a ‘three-cell design’ has two side-mounted sections like the 890 Adventure, freeing up space for the lowered seat and the new airbox above the engine. At 23 litres there’s just as much capacity as before, but most of the fuel in carried in the fairing sides rather than between your legs. The filler is still in the conventional spot, though, and the two side tanks are interconnected so they fill and drain in unison. The redesigned bodywork also means improved ergonomics, with a hand-adjustable screen that can be raised 55mm higher than before.

Overall, KTM says the bike weighs ‘approximately’ 220kg dry, which is 5kg more than the old version. However, dry weight is a poor indicator of real-world mass and once loaded with fluids and a full tank of fuel the Super Adventure will be significantly heftier than either of those figures.

The KTM 1290 Super Duke R is an aggressive hyper naked bike that’s made even better. Priced at P1,250,000, this motorcycle ensures endless power, razor-sharp handling, and gorgeous looks.

This sharp-looking bike comes with a handlebar that can be adjusted four-ways for that perfect riding position. A command center also takes center stage here, where suspension settings and ride modes can be fettled at a push of a button. Behind the handlebar sits a 6.5 inch TFT instrument cluster. The Super Duke’s tank is designed to contain as much fuel as possible for those long-distance trips.

Taking charge at the helm is an all-new scratch-resistant 7-inch TFT display. Unmatched in terms of graphics and readability, adventurers can access information on the fly, quickly and easily without navigating complex menus. This comes thanks to a 6-way switch cube on the handlebar and the new quick select and favorites buttons. Connectivity is also taken care of by way of KTM MY RIDE, which connects via Bluetooth for turn-by-turn navigation, playing music, and even answering calls. Still catching glare? The TFT screen is tilt-angle adjustable.

No bar-mounted cellphone cradle? No problem. A convenient compartment keeps your smartphone safe on the road. It keeps it charged too, thanks to its integrated USB socket. The optional incoming call and audio functions using KTM MY RIDE link the phone to the TFT via Bluetooth, so less time is spent staring at the screen, and more time is spent looking ahead.

A crucial part of your adventure ride is, arguably, your tyre pressure. Thankfully, the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE R is fitted with a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) which monitors front and rear tyre pressure and displays it on the TFT for easy viewing. Should there be any pressure loss, a warning will display on the dash.

Failure to indicate is one thing. Forgetting to cancel your turn indicator is another. Thankfully, the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE R is fitted with an Automatic Turn Indicator Reset or ATIR. After 10 seconds of movement and 150 metres of riding distance, the turn indicator will reset automatically. A big improvement in terms of safety, as it is now impossible to forget to reset the indicators.

There won"t be any Wi-Fi where you"re going, but with the KTM MY RIDE system, you"ll still have a connection to your smartphone. A test mule of the upcoming KTM 390 Adventure popped up last month in India (Pune). However, unlike the test mules spotted in Europe, the Indian motorcycle was equipped with alloy wheels instead of wire-spokes. Thus, similar to its bigger adventure tourer models, KTM is expected to introduce the 390 Adventure in two varieties – on- and off-road spec.

Thus, we used the expertise of Shoeb to create the production-spec model digitally. You can check out the road-biased 390 Adventure in one of our previous posts. Similar to its bigger adventure motorcycles, KTM is expected to call the off-road model 390 Adventure R.

Apart from what is mentioned above, both motorcycles would feature an identical styling, features and hardware. A full LED headlight with a split style design, previously seen on the 390 Duke, would illuminate the trail. LED blinkers and LED tail light complete the lighting department. The motorcycle will come with a compact windscreen as standard while KTM may offer a larger unit as part of optional accessories. The fairing would be accompanied by comfort-enhancing extensions on the sides of the headlight.

The European test mule did not feature a tall-set front fender – a typical off-road motorcycle trait. Thus, the production-spec 390 Adventure R is expected to carry a conventionally placed unit. The cockpit would include a TFT display derived from the 390 Duke"s unit. KTM is expected to add turn-by-turn navigation on display. Optional accessories may also include a mount for an aftermarket navigation system. The TFT screen would also feature smartphone integration via Bluetooth. The 390 Duke style switchgear can be used to toggle between music tracks or control the incoming calls without letting go of the handlebar.

The 390 Adventure R will carry a marginal premium over the standard. KTM India should target the sub-INR 3 lakh (on-road) price zone with the 390 Adventure and 390 Adventure R that would cause severe pressure to its direct rival, the BMW G310 GS and other sub-500cc adventure tourers such as the Kawasaki Versys-X 300. The aggressive pricing would also bother the Royal Enfield 650 Twins although they belong in a different segment.

KTM 390 Duke is a street bike available at a starting price of Rs. 2,95,182 in India. It is available in only 1 variant and 2 colours. The KTM 390 Duke is powered by 373.27cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 42.9 bhp and a torque of 37 Nm. With both front and rear disc brakes, KTM 390 Duke comes up with anti-locking braking system. This 390 Duke bike weighs 171 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 13.4 liters.

KTM India has launched the 2022 390 Duke in the Indian market with new colour options. The sub-500cc roadster from the Austrian brand is available in two new paint schemes – Dark Galvano and Liquid Metal. The Dark Galvano theme features a stealthy look while Liquid Metal packs a bolder colour combination with a bright orange paint for the fuel tank, rear panel, and chassis.

The changes to the 2022 model are limited to the addition of paint revisions. Meanwhile, the motorcycle retains styling elements such as the 1290 SuperDuke-inspired headlight, a muscular fuel tank, split-style seat, side-slung exhaust, and 17-inch alloy wheels on both ends. The feature list, too, remains unaltered and the 2022 390 Duke retains full-LED lighting, Bluetooth-enabled colour-TFT display, quickshifter, and dual-channel ABS.
