Ever since their debut in 2007, the GS models of the F series have stood for premium riding enjoyment with typical ‘Made by BMW Motorrad’ features, representing the middle-class Adventure segment. As before, the GS abbreviation again represents a perfect synthesis of touring and long-distance capability combined with sporty dynamics and supreme offroad performance. In short: A BMW GS is the perfect companion when it comes to discovering remote corners of the world by motorcycle. After around ten years of consistent model development, BMW Motorrad has now fully redesigned and reengineered its middle-class GS models in line with its objective of creating an ultimate riding machine that is even more uncomplicated and carefree, whether used for sport-oriented road riding, on tour complete with luggage and a passenger, or on an adventure trip into offroad terrain.

The new GS models address individual rider requirements by offering ‘Rain’ and ‘Road’ riding modes, while the combination of BMW Motorrad ABS and the ASC automatic stability control ensures a high level of safety.

The new GS models of the F series are being launched with a range of equipment options that is unique for the middle class. Be it the different seat heights and windshields, the new full LED headlight, the optional Connectivity equipment with TFT display or eCall, the list of fascinating features with which owners can maximise their riding enjoyment and safety as well as experience the thrill of the road is now virtually inexhaustible for middle class travel enduro motorcycles.

Providing fast and clear information for the rider with the least possible distraction from what is happening on the road – this is achieved with the unique operating concept of the new Connectivity option by BMW Motorrad featuring a high-quality 6.5 inch full-colour TFT display.

Munich. Providing fast and clear information for the rider with the least possible distraction from what is happening on the road – this is achieved with the unique operating concept of the new Connectivity option by BMW Motorrad featuring a high-quality 6.5 inch full-colour TFT display.

Fast and safe information with the least possible distraction from the traffic situation. The rider can access motorcycle and connectivity functions quickly with a great level of comfort thanks to the advanced BMW Motorrad multi-controller and the integrated approach. In addition the new TFT display combines the familiar “classic” display of data such as rpm and speed with new technology thereby providing an enormous range of features.

When developing the new TFT display, the BMW Motorrad engineers placed a major focus on designing all the rider interaction activities so as to keep rider distraction to an absolute minimum. BMW Motorrad is setting new standards in this respect as it was possible to find suitable display ideally suited to a large number of specific applications. The interaction activities can be regulated by the well-proven multi-controller.

Using the phone and listening to music in comfort while riding. If the rider for example connects a smartphone and a helmet equipped with BMW Motorrad communication system using the TFT display, he can easily access the media playback and phone functions. These phone and media functions can be used without having to install an app. If a Bluetooth connection has been established with any standard smartphone, the rider can enjoy listening to music while riding. Of course the rider can also jump back and forwards in his music collection. The rider can see all his smartphone contacts in the TFT display and can select and call contacts using the multi-controller. If there is an incoming call while on the road, the rider can quickly take or reject the call with a single tip of the controller.

BMW Motorrad Connected App with practice-oriented arrow navigation and numerous additional functions. The free BMW Motorrad Connected App is a world first for motorcycles offering everyday-suitable and practice-oriented arrow navigation directly via the TFT display. Both the navigation itself and the ability to access the app functions directly on the motorcycle represent a real stand-alone feature. The BMW Motorrad Connected App also offers further features such as recording your ridden routes or displaying ride statistics and information.

The arrow navigation in the form of turn-by-turn arrow directions directly in the TFT display and provides very precise turn indications including lane guiding. Last destinations or points of interest can also be called up directly using the TFT display. This basic navigation is especially interesting for motorcyclists who want to handle everyday riding or short trips comfortably without having to take any additional equipment along.

For touring riders with higher demands, the BMW Motorrad Navigator is still recommended since it provides specifically optimised navigation for motorcyclists and features the respective planning and routing functions. The Navigator is also operated using the multi-controller. The operating focus can be simply transferred from the TFT display to the Navigator.

Integrated On-Board Computer PRO with numerous display and setting options. Apart from these comprehensive Connectivity functions, the new TFT display also displays ride-relevant information in an attractive and very clear manner. Here too, the BMW Motorrad multi-controller turns operation into a very easy task. The new TFT display also features the On-board Computer PRO with numerous display and setting options.

The new TFT display offers state-of-the-art and simple access to the motorcycle settings and information. Intuitive information graphics display valuable information. In this way the rider can for example read the tyre pressure settings at the front and rear very simply without being distracted from the traffic situation. Not only the actual tyre pressure settings are displayed but also what tyre pressures are recommended in the respective situation.

One of the most critical aspects of an off-road motorcycle is the tires. So Bob’s BMW did away with the stock Michelin Anakee 3 tires and their 90/10 street/dirt bias, and fitted the Rallye with the Anakee Wilds. These are a very aggressive 50/50 tire with a tread block pattern that allows for ample channeling of dirt, mud, sand, and other debris. However even with such an aggressive tread pattern the casing of the tire is reinforced to provide stable and predictable handling on twisty back roads.

The next addition to the Rallye was some crash protection. For those with an affinity for the boxer motor know that the compromise of the wonderfully low center of gravity is the vulnerability of horizontally opposed cylinders off road. We negated this by adding on the BMW crash bars to protect the cylinders from impact, and added a bash plate for the boxer’s undercarriage as well.

One of the key principles of riding off road is being able to get up onto the pegs. Doing so gives the rider much more control in situations of compromised traction and tight low-speed maneuvering. Doing so requires ample grip on the pegs, but if the trip to the trails covers a great distance the metal teeth of an enduro peg can grow uncomfortable. The pegs we installed from BMW created a brilliant solution to this problem. In the center of the pegs are rubber inserts to maintain comfort, but once the rider stands up and shifts their weight the inserts retract into the peg allowing for better grip.

The evolution of BMW Motorrad and the bikes that have rolled off the line in Berlin has been a story of incredible progress and change. From it’s inception, the Boxer engine and the creative minds behind it have represented a fine balance between mechanical simplicity and cutting edge technological innovation. The bullet proof carbureted and air cooled boxers of the past paved the way for incredible progress in terms of performance and an electronic hand in the riding experience. However this push towards modern technology has shifted away from some of the classic soul and character of the BMW Boxer. It’s with the R Nine T Scrambler that Motorrad was able to combine modern innovation and the ethos of the original boxer into one machine.

As much as the aesthetics of a motorcycle are held in high regard, they remain secondary to how the motorcycle rides. When you swing a leg over and turn the key on the scrambler, theres an immediate sensation not found on a more overtly technical motorcycle. The engine rumbles to life with a a droning pulse as the two oil-cooled pistons eagerly await the first crack of the throttle. With a set of high-mounted pipes that come stock from Akaprovic, the exhaust note comes in the form of an urgent bark that burbles back down to idle. The Air/Oil cooled engine of the R Nine T still maintains the rich low end torque of the original boxer, but with a throttle response that is immensely sharp and responsive. Even the slightest twist of the wrist sends the Scrambler surging forward with aplomb. Once in motion the bike is an absolute joy to ride thanks to the time-honored characteristics of the boxer. The low center of gravity makes easy work of low speed maneuvering and traffic. When the roads open up and yield flowing curves, the bike deftly dips into every corner and holds a solid line aided by it’s rear monoshock configuration. This bike truly nails the vintage aesthetic without compromising safety or performance. ABS and Traction control intervene in the most tasteful manner, softening those sudden stops and keeping the rear end from breaking free. BMW Motorrad truly has a winner with this platform, by incorporating their cutting edge innovation into a show stopping package that evokes a rich lineage of motorcycling without compromising progress.

Now try and imagine how you’d have felt if someone had told you that BMW (who back then only made tourers and even-bigger tourers) would one day make a trail bike that made more horsepower, accelerated harder, handled even better on the road, did almost twice the mpg and cost £500 less.

The standard F850GS costs £9875. It has manually-adjusted suspension, two riding modes (road and rain) and BMW’s standard-system ABS. Triumph’s base model Tiger 800 XR costs £9200 and KTM’s 790 Adventure is £10,999 but the base model KTM has a lot more standard kit than the BMW or Triumph.

The F850GS Sport we tested starts at £10,990 and has traction control, two additional riding modes (Dynamic and Enduro), plus a quickshifter, heated grips, LED headlight and ABS-Pro.

The engine is the star of this particular show. BMW’s parallel twin motor had a major redesign for 2018. Aside from the capacity increase, the biggest change was to drop the counterbalancing ‘dummy piston’ used in the old 800 motor, replacing it with dual balancer shafts. At the same time, BMW updated the fuelling and ignition systems and the result is an engine, like most BMWs that revs so quickly and freely it feels like the pistons are made from race-grade carbon fibre.

Clutch action is very light; almost too light, as if there’s some mechanical assistance that removes a bit of ‘feel’ to the action. The gearshift is easy, slick and consistent too. Our bike had BMW’s quickshifter fitted, which works well when you’re riding aggressively, but less so at lower revs and smaller throttle openings.

BMW claim the new 850 motor is more economical than the old F800. That bike was one of the first modern bike engines to be genuinely frugal, easily achieving 60mpg, so we were expecting the F850 to be better-still.

The F850 feels less of a road bike and more of a traditional trailie than KTM’s 790 Adventure. Closer to Honda’s Africa Twin too. What this means is that the seat is tall, the suspension feels very softly sprung and almost under-damped at low speeds. Tight corners taken aggressively show this up dramatically with the bike feeling loose at the back end, like it wants to slip and slide. On our test bike, fitted with BMW’s ESA electronically controlled suspension, things get much better as the speeds increase. ESA alters the preload, spring rate and rebound damping electronically via a simple selection of preset modes. In ‘Dynamic’ mode on fast, bumpy backroads the GS is sharp-steering, very controlled and all-too easy to ride off the edge of the skinny front as well as the rear tyre without the rider even being aware of it. Set the suspension to ‘Road’ mode and, while fine on bumpy backroads, there was a weird almost see-sawing motion at 70mph on motorways. It disappeared in ‘Dynamic’ so that was where I left it most of the time.

First impressions are that the brakes could be better. Grabbing a handful of front lever sends the suspension diving without the expected amount of stopping. In time you get used to it and brake a little earlier and harder. I guess that an off-road bike needs more feel than power and the F850GS always stops safely. KTM’s 790 has a similar set-up, needing a stronger tug on the road that you’re expecting. Riding with a pillion really brings home the shortcomings on a twisty road. As a road tester you notice it, but if it were your bike you’d be used to it in a month.

BMW’s ABS-pro (standard on this ‘Sport model, optional on the base bike) is lean-angle sensitive. It’s a hard system to deliberately test safely on the road, but I have been on a couple of other BMWs where it’s been deployed and the system is impressive. Hitting some gravel on one occasion, while leant over, it allowed me to keep on braking. Instead of the front wheel tucking under and crashing it simply started to come gently upright.

TFT display is lovely and (mostly) easy to use. BMW’s keyless ignition and fuel filler works reliably too. Left-hand switchgear is cluttered, but manageable.

BMW’s current TFT dash is a lesson to every other manufacturer in clarity and stylish design. Easy to read, mostly simple to use (I could find everything I needed intuitively apart from how to reset the trip milometer) and packed with information. This F850 Sport model is packed with rider aids, traction control and sophisticated ABS, but the weird thing is that, on road, at least, the throttle control, engine response and massive reserves of chassis ability mean you’d have to be a very clumsy rider to ever need any of them. It’s one of those bikes that just makes things easy. I tried riding in an ever-more-dim manner to get the aids to light up and save me, but I never even got close. The damn thing is just too capable on its own.

BMW make the best factory-fit heated grips. Simple to use, warm enough to be worth the money and dependable. In a world where many aftermarket items are lucky to survive a year, I’ve ridden ancient BMWs that look like something Mad Max rejected and the grips still work.

The F850GS is a good bike – it’s that simple. The engine is lovely; fast and frantic when you want it, easy and economical when you want that instead. The chassis is capable on road and those in the know tell me it works off-road too. It has all the essential modern gizmos, as many options as you could ever need and, by modern measures it’s reasonable value too.
