Series information: We performed a hands-on evaluation of the 47-inch LG 47LD520, but this review also applies to the other screen sizes in the series. All sizes have identical specs and according to the manufacturer should provide very similar picture quality. The company also sells a 55-inch 55LD520C, a "commercial" model that LG says has different presets and options, among other differences, and so isn"t included in this review.

The LD520 series is currently LG"s least-expensive LCD to feature 120Hz processing, and though it lacks the streaming media of the step-up LD550 models and the LED backlights of even higher-end sets, it"s pretty well-featured for its price point.

It doesn"t have the DLNA streaming of the Samsung LNC630, and it can"t do video streaming via USB like the Sony EX500, but the LG does offer photo and music access via its USB port. We"d also be remiss if we didn"t mention the matte screen, which cuts down on reflections better than the glossy screens some step-up LCDs.

The picture quality of the LD520 series fell short of competing LCDs like the Samsung LNC630 and, although it wasn"t directly compared in our lineup, the Sony KDL-EX500. Weaknesses included subpar uniformity and black levels, along with artifact-prone dejudder processing. We did appreciate the calibration controls" ability to dial in accurate color, as well as the matte screen and proper handling of 1080p/24.

As with the other LCDs in our comparison, the LG failed to produce a realistic color in very dark areas and black, which tended toward extreme blue. Again we noted similar performance to the Vizio; the blue tinge was worse than on the Samsung C630.

Video processing: The LD520 gets the same system as step-up 2010 LG LCDs, which allows further customization of dejudder or "smoothing," as well as the antiblur effect of the TV"s TruMotion processing. Labeled User and consisting of sliders labeled Judder and Blur, it"s similar to the system we liked so much on the Samsung C630, but doesn"t work as well.

In our motion resolution tests, the LD520 scored between 500 and 700 lines--good for a 120Hz LCD--with TruMotion engaged (the result fluctuated more than normal, which explains the wider range). Turning it off dropped the result down to between 300 and 400 lines, and reducing the Custom Judder Reduction setting to less than 10 reduced these numbers accordingly. As usual with such tests, we had a difficult time detecting any real-world differences in blurring between any of the settings.

LG Display reported on Thursday a record operating profit in the usually slow January-March quarter, helped by tight panel supplies and surging demand for flat-screen televisions ahead of the Olympics in Beijing in August.

However, chief financial officer James Jeong warned that Sony"s price-driven marketing could affect LCD screen prices and sales in the second quarter.

The LCD TV market is seeing stronger-than-expected demand for small-size sets as consumers switch to sleeker TVs from bulky tubes at ever-faster rates, Kwon said.

Kwon said the mass production could start one or two months earlier than the original schedule of March or April. "Lots of panels from the 8G line should go to China," Kwon said.

In the fourth quarter of 2007, Sony jumped four spots to become No. 1 in LCD TV shipments in North America with 12.8 percent market share. Samsung ranked second with 12.3 percent, followed by Vizio with 10.8 percent, according to DisplaySearch.

For many years, TVs with LED backlights have dominated the market. Manufacturers release many LED models every year that have different features. You won"t get the same excellent dark room picture quality as an OLED but LED TVs have a few more advantages than OLEDs (check out our article about OLED vs. LED). The Samsung QN90B QLED is the best TV with an LED panel we"ve tested. It"s an impressive TV with amazing picture quality and a great selection of gaming features. It uses a Mini LED backlight, with way more dimming zones than most LED TVs, which allows for greater control over the local dimming feature for better dark room performance, with less distracting blooming around bright objects. It also gets exceptionally bright, meaning it can handle lots of glare in a bright room.

The best LCD TV for a home theater is the Hisense U9DG. It"s a unique LED TV because it uses dual-panel technology. It means it has two LCD panels stacked on top of each other, delivering the equivalent of a local dimming feature with two million dimming zones; most other TVs only have a few hundred at most. This technology helps provide the TV with the best contrast ratio we"ve tested on any LED TV. The black level is nearly perfect, even in bright scenes, and there"s almost no blooming around bright objects.

The best mid-range TV we"ve tested with an LED panel is the Hisense U8H. It"s an excellent TV overall, with fantastic contrast and an impressive Mini LED local dimming feature, delivering deep blacks in a dark room with very little distracting blooming around bright objects. It has exceptional peak brightness and reflection handling, ensuring it can easily overcome glare in a bright room. It has worse processing overall than the Samsung QN90B QLED, though, so it"s a bit of a step down. There"s more noticeable banding in areas of similar color, and it has slightly worse motion processing as well.
