iBUYPOWER Snowblind - Tempered Glass LCD Side Panel Gaming PC!If there was ever a concern that PC gaming was stagnating, a recent spate of new system announcements and Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to Windows 10 gaming should put such concerns to rest. Not only are there the usual upgraded CPU and GPU cycles underway, but gaming system makers are tossing some real innovation into the mix.

One example is iBuyPower, which makes a complete line of gaming PCs spanning price points from low to high. They have apparently moved on from just offering the highest-end components, however, with new cases that incorporate a transparent LCD display in a side panel, PC Gamer reports.

According to iBuyPower, “Project Snowblind represents the next leap forward in gaming PC customization. Featuring a tailor-made clear LCD side panel, this PC will showcase your hardware like never before, while allowing you to have virtually any graphic display.”

You can customize a new Snowblind system by heading over to the iBuyPower site. The company hopes to ship systems by the end of February, meaning that you won’t have to wait too long for one of the more innovative case accessories we have seen in a while.

iBuypower"s Snowblind sports one of the most unique aesthetic features we"ve ever seen in a custom shop gaming PC with its translucent side-panel LCD display. The company sent us its second-generation version of the chassis called the Element bearing a modified “Extreme” configuration - the most-premium component setup for the Snowblind. For those with the cash, the $2,542 price tag is worth the performance and one-of-a-kind side-panel display.

The iBuypower Snowblind Extreme can come in two different cases – the original N450 or the Element chassis. Both are two toned white and black, with the majority of the exposed surface area colored white. Our review sample came in the company’s 2nd generation Element case, with smooth edges and a tempered glass front and side panel.

The front glass exposes two 120mm white LED intake fans that take air from the bottom of the chamber. The right side is a solid white aluminum panel, but the hinged glass on the left side (that exposes the interior components) is the primary feature of the Snowblind series – a transparent LCD display (more on that below).

The top panel sports a vent with a black magnetic dust filter. Even though there isn’t a fan attached under it (in this particular configuration), it still provides an outlet for the waste heat and matches the two-toned theme. The PSU is mounted at the bottom of the chassis and sports a sliding dust filter over the power supply intake vent on the underside of the case. The rear panel also sports a vent, which acts as an exhaust for the attached 120mm radiator and fan.

The GPU sports the usual Nvidia Founder’s Edition outputs – three DisplayPort 1.4 ports and an HDMI 2.0 port. The controller card for the side-panel display has a DVI-D and VGA D-sub input, and iBuypower includes a DVI-D to DisplayPort cable so that you can connect it to the graphics card, which is requirement to use the featured translucent LCD screen.

The LCD panel itself has a resolution of 1280 x 1024 with a refresh rate of 60Hz, and it can be used to customize your rig at a level not previously seen in the mainstream market. The joint venture with Intel is a one-of-a-kind aesthetic feature, but the company doesn’t offer any proprietary software for the device.

However, iBuyPower recommends overlays and wallpaper programs such as Rainmeter and Wallpaper Engine to make the panel display function (we’ll get into the specifics of these programs later). The display is most visible with a white background and lighting (hence the chassis and motherboard), and the white LED fans and light strip (both included at base price) help make the image on the screen clearer. We did find some animations that looked cool, which we show below.

The interior chassis of the Snowblind Element Extreme matches the exterior, with an array of white and black components attached to the white backdrop of the case, with a plastic panel bearing the iBuypower logo to hide away the neatly-run cabling. Regardless of the components (you can customize the parts for almost any budget and performance needs), the appearance is sleek and classy.

To open the hinged side panel, simply press the two locks at the top and bottom of the plastic edge of the panel and pull the glass away from the chassis. The previously mentioned white LED light strip is integrated into the interior edges (top, side, and bottom) of the LCD side panel display.

The transparent side-panel LCD display’s controller card is mounted in a single PCIe slot while the Nvidia GTX 1080 card lives in the PCIe x16 slot. The silver color of the Nvidia card makes it stand out from the black and white aesthetic of the case, though if you configure with a different GPU, the look will vary.

The iBuypower Snowblind starts at $1,679 for its most-basic setup, which consists of a Core i5-8600K, 8GB DDR4-3000, a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB graphics card, and a 1TB HDD. The Extreme model we tested had an Intel Core i7-7800X processor, a MSI X299 Tomahawk Arctic motherboard and a Deepcool Captain EX120 120mm all-in-one (AIO) CPU liquid cooler. It had 16GB (4 x 4GB) of Adata DDR4-3000 RAM, with a strong CAS latency of 16-16-16-36,

The iBuypower Snowblind Element Extreme may have a unique side-panel display, but the company didn’t ship the PC with any software to control it preinstalled (the Windows 10 Home 64-bit installation was also devoid of bloatware). Instead, it provides all Snowblind buyers with a Steam key for Wallpaper Engine, a custom background utility with a vast collection of desktop themes and animations that can be displayed on the 1280 x 1024 60Hz transparent display, but the user still has to setup the display for themselves.

We already mentioned that users needed to connect the PCIe x1 controller card to the GPU with the provided cable, but you’ll also have to adjust the screen’s orientation through the Nvidia Control Panel, turning the image 90-degrees to the right in order to frame the desktop correctly (although the resolution is 1280 x 1024, it reads as a 1024 x 1280 when properly oriented).

After you get the side-panel display oriented correctly, you should redeem the Steam key and install Wallpaper Engine. Using the software, you can download user-created themes and animations and run them on the secondary panel screen. The company also recommended Rainmeter (free) for those that wanted to place custom meters on the display, but we didn’t have much time to play around with that.

That"s the selling point of the iBuyPower Snowblind (from $1,679; $2,399 as tested), which features a unique translucent side panel that you can customize with cool wallpapers, useful PC monitoring tools or anything else you can think of slapping on the side of the desktop.

The iBuyPower Snowblind"s white-and-black case looks pretty unassuming — until you realize that the entire left side of the PC is its own display. That"s right: This desktop"s translucent side panel is a fully functioning 1280 x 1024 LCD screen, which you can use to show off cool animated wallpapers, keep tabs on your PC"s temperature and performance, or do whatever the heck else you feel like doing on a giant, see-through display.

I first tested out the Snowblind"s LCD screen by activating a few animated wallpapers using the system"s included Wallpaper Engine software, and was completely mesmerized. Sure, there"s nothing really practical about having a big, animated sports car, solar system or spaceship on the side of your PC, but I"ll be damned if it doesn"t look cool.

This desktop"s translucent side panel is a fully functioning LCD screen, which you can use to show off animated wallpapers, keep tabs on performance or do whatever the heck else you feel like.

You could, theoretically, play games on the Snowblind"s LCD display, but it"s probably not the best idea. Although I could technically run and shoot my way through Rise of the Tomb Raider on the side panel, it was hard to focus on enemies when I had a huge, glowing GeForce GTX logo obstructing the action from within the PC.

The same goes for watching YouTube videos or Twitch streams — but if you want to use the LCD screen as a separate monitor for Twitch chat, you could make it work as long as you have the window set against the white parts of the PC. Ultimately, the Snowblind"s LCD panel is best suited for smaller applications such as temperature and CPU monitoring, or just for making the PC look cool with colorful wallpapers.

The iBuyPower Snowblind edged out the Alienware Aurora on the Rise of the Tomb Raider Benchmark, rendering Lara Croft at a swift 93.6 frames per second.

iBuyPower"s PC scored an impressive 6,709 on the 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra benchmark (which gauges 4K performance), just about tying the Aurora (6,763) and beating both the Legion Y920 (4,997) and our 5,997 average by a solid margin.

All configurations offer a variety of customization options, including two case options (the boxy Element and the curvy N450), LED fans (starting at $29), and a ton of additional CPU, RAM, storage and GPU choices.

The iBuyPower Snowblind is a one-of-a-kind gaming PC whose unique LCD side panel absolutely dazzles — and offers some practical uses, too. It"s an excellent centerpiece for any showy gaming den, especially because its arresting looks are backed up by some very good Core i7, GTX 1080 gaming performance at a reasonable price.

If you"re looking for more configuration options within a still-striking design, you might want to consider the Alienware Aurora, which starts at a cheaper $949 and offers all kinds of custom lighting options. And if you need something bigger and even bolder, take a look at the MSI Infinite (starting at $1,599; $1,799 as tested), which offers a gigantic, LED-laden chassis. But if you"re seeking a desktop whose aesthetic bells and whistles are limited only by your imagination, there"s nothing quite like the iBuyPower Snowblind.

When I first received the BTS11 in for review, it was a little while ago; normally I don’t take this long to post things, but there were a number of extenuating circumstances behind this delay.  However I’ve gotten all of my notes in order, and I’m more than ready to give my thoughts, opinions, and findings on this true beast of a system.  Designed for gamers in school without an unlimited budget at their disposal, iBUYPOWER has come through to show that you don’t need to sacrifice power and performance by getting a system that only runs a grand.

Now to be honest, I have not used a pre-built PC since I was a kid.  I’ve always felt that I could build a PC that was just as good as one from a big box store, for half the price because I wasn’t paying for a brand name – and while I still do feel that way about major brand name towers from companies like Dell or HP, the iBUYPOWER rig has made me think twice about other manufacturers.  When it first came in its giant box, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I mean I had seen the pictures – seen the specs; but I wasn’t really ready for the joy that awaited in the box.

The first thing that my wife said was that the case reminded her of a Stormtrooper (a thought then echoed by all three kids), and I have to agree to that as well.  Just the sleek arctic white appearance with the finely defined black highlights make the appearance what it is.  When powered on, there is a cool blue glow that comes from the LEDs showing the fan controls on the top of the case – I really think the case would benefit from a piece of lexan on one side and some cold cathodes – but I digress.  I’ve always liked to throw in cold cathodes for the light factor, but the NZXT Phantom case that they use has solid outer walls.

Another thing with the case, is that it’s freakin’ HUGE!  There’s plenty of space for adding drives and such while still maintaining proper airflow.  Ecerything on the inside looks clean (not like the Frankenstein monster jobs I normally do) because all of the cables are mounted perfectly.  On the top of the case are two USB 2.0 ports, and an eSATA plus your standard headphone and mic jacks.  On the rear, there’s a boatload more, showing a whopping four more USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, analog audio AND S/PDIF digital audio jacks, plus a handy HDMI connector (for people like me who hook rigs up to TVs).  There’s also a standard Ethernet port (which is important because for some reason there’s no built in WiFi), a serial port, and a parallel port.  Quite enough to make sure everything you have can be plugged in somewhere.

Inside the case are two PCI Express x1 slots, two standard PCI slots, and another PCI Express x16 (wired as x4) slot.  There’s four RAM slots, but only two are free – the other two hold 4GB of RAM each.  There’s a 700-watt power supply running the whole thing too – which is more than ample for the stock components (though you may need to upgrade later on if you add a lot).  One thing that really confused me, is that they stick an NVIDIA GTX 550 TI 1GB card in it for graphics, but the Gigabyte motherboard (GA – P6 – 7A – D3 – B3) that is in it supports CrossFireX – not SLI.  It’s not that big of a deal because the video card runs quite well, but if you ever want to run a dual card system, you’ll have to get two new cards and not just one.

You can no longer get this system direct from their website, but you can still from TigerDirect, which is great.  On a side note though, I had multiple friends come and play with this computer while I had it, and I know at least three of them who either are ordering, or have now ordered from iBUYPOWER because of how impressed they were with this system.  I too plan on spending part of my tax return on a rig from these guys – the first “bought” PC I’ll have owned in close to 18 years.  If that doesn’t show my faith in these guys, nothing will.

The Bottom Line:If you’re a kid somewhat strapped for cash, and doesn’t mind a few things missing in order to get the most gaming performance for your buck, then iBUYPOWER definitely has you covered – not just with this system, but with many others as well.
