While classic burn-ins usually happen on displays over long periods of time as the phosphors in the screen"s front panel break down, LCDs are immune from this because the image crystals and backlight are separate. However, they do suffer from "image persistence," where a constant voltage will cause the crystal voltage-response curve to change, resulting in them letting more or less backlight through for a given voltage than when compared with surrounding pixels.

For LCD image persistence, you can try resetting the pixel response curves by first turning off the display for a few minutes. The longer the display is off, the more probable it is the pixels have cooled and equilibrated to their baseline "off" state. After this, turning all pixel color components fully on for an extended period will equilibrate them to their full brightness again. The best procedure for doing this in OS X is to create a pure white image by opening up a blank document and using the screen-capture hot keys, "Cmd-Shift-4" (note we"re using "4" and not "3"), and then selecting an area of white on the screen. Then place the image from the desktop in its own folder and select that folder for use with the pictures screen saver, ensuring the screensaver options are set to not pan or otherwise display boarders or background colors. Then use the energy saver system preferences to disable both the display and system sleep, and finally start the screensaver (hot-corners are useful for this).
With the screensaver active, turn off the display and let it cool down as mentioned above. Then turn it on and let it warm up (you can adjust the brightness to any level that"s comfortable for you, since the backlights have nothing to do with the pixel response and image persistence problems). Run the display like this for at least as long as you displayed the original pattern that caused the image persistence, but it wont hurt to run it for longer. With this setup, the pixels should slowly re-equilibrate.
For stuck pixels, there are a variety of fixes that can help. The first and least intrusive is the use of a program that exercises the pixels. The popular "jscreenfix" program is a Java applet that will run a rapid pattern over a stuck pixel and exercise it to hopefully clear the problem. This can also be used for dead pixels as well, so download and try the program out (sometimes it can take a long time for pixels to unstick). Other programs you can use to test pixels are LCDtest, Pixel Fix, and Dead Pixel Tester.
If jscreenfix does not work, you can try various pressure remedies. We caution using this, since you can further damage your screen, but if you are aware of the risk, this has helped a few people clear stuck and dead pixels. The idea is that the liquid in the liquid-crystal may have shifted and is not getting full electrical contact, or another connection is slightly ajar from its settings, which can sometimes be fixed by massaging the components of the display. There are a variety of approaches to this, which include tapping, rubbing, and pressing on or around the dead/stuck pixels. A few of these methods are outlined in detail in this wikiHow article. Again, we caution the use of these methods, especially if your system is under warranty, in which case we recommend you first talk to Apple.
NOTE: Pressure methods will not work on any glossy LCD, since you have a layer of glass in front of the display and you risk cracking it if you put pressure on it. You may get away with gentle rubbing, but it will not hold up to firm pressure.

While general use of the system will usually ensure that the working area of the display is constantly changing intensity, items like the menu bar and dock may be presented enough to potentially cause image persistence. Dimming the display used to help prolong the life of CRT monitors because it cut down on the radiation output that caused the phosphor breakdown, but for LCDs the backlight intensity will not affect the pixels. As such, you can safely run your LCD monitor at any brightness without increasing the potential of image persistence.
Beyond pixel-related problems such as these, LCD monitors can experiences several severe hardware failures that are quite apparent. The first is if the backlights go out, which can be caused by broken backlight tubes or a broken inverter board for the display. When this happens, you will see uneven brightness or the inability to light your display. You can check for pixel functionality by holding a bright light up to the display and you should see a faint image of the pixels on the screen. This can sometimes be repaired by replacing the inverter board on the display.
The last problem is a leak of the liquid crystal. This will look like a dark oil blot on the display that may grow slowly or suddenly appear. If this happens, the display panel will need to be replaced.

Before jumping headlong into fixing dead pixels, it’s important first to understand how pixels work in a monitor. The primary technology that runs monitors is Liquid Crystal Display or LCD for short.
How it works is that two polarizing filters sandwich a layer of liquid crystal, a name for a type of liquid that can also exhibit properties of crystals. Behind that sandwich is a backlight that provides the light source that you see from your monitor. As that light passes through the sandwich, each layer is altered using electrons to produce either light, no light, or some gradient between the two. At an individual level, these are called electrodes and are the building block of LCD monitors.
If you want to get color out of your LCD, you add another three layers of filters—usually red, green, and blue. Again, by adjusting the number of electrons that go into each color of the filter, you can increase or decrease the hue and intensity, thereby giving you a specific RGB value that your eyes interpret as color. Therefore, each pixel is made of three different electrodes, one for each color.

There are thousands—if not millions—of pixels in every LCD panel. A panel with 1080x1920 contains 2,073,600 pixels. Business applications that require zero-fail pixel standards can range vastly from medical equipment, to airline entertainment systems and cockpit applications, to indoor and outdoor digital signage.
With so many pixels packed into the incredibly bright and colorful LCD technologies, there are bound to be a few dud pixels. Even turning on a brand-new screen, a user may see a dead spot here or there. When an LCD is manufactured, it may not come off the production line with 100% pixel defect free.
Dead pixelsalways appear black; these are caused by transistors in the electrodes that are stuck “off.” No light passes through the layer, causing the black appearance. Dead pixels are found by displaying solid colors on the screen and meticulously inspecting the screen for holes or missing spots. These are usually caused by a manufacturing defect and are not able to be fixed.
Hot pixelsappear as if they are “on,” they always look white; they are caused by transistors in the electrodes that are stuck to appear as if they are always on, shining bright on your display. A hot pixel might be referred to as a stuck pixel since the underlying factor is that the pixel(s) are stuck on.
Stuck pixelsare a generated when one or two of the sub pixels (red, blue, green) remain on or off. The look of a stuck pixel may vary since it depends on which color sub pixel is stuck. It appears as a bright dot of color and they are most noticeable when the screen is dark, or black. The good news is stuck pixels are often able to be corrected. If stuck pixels aren’t corrected, eventually they turn into dead pixels.
Dead pixel policies vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Many have created a grading system to categorize the variations in pixel quality from LCD to LCD. Even ISO 13406-2 guidelines specify an acceptable amount of pixels by display category; and each industry has different standards in which pixel defects are acceptable. Many expect LCDs to have absolutely zero dead pixels.
Brand New A grade (all other manufacturers) (P Grade for AUO): (1,3,3)- 1 sub pixel can be out in 1 sector up to 3 pixels can be out (these are never noticeable to the naked eye)
Pixel pitch refers to the density of pixels on an LED screen. It is sometimes called dot pitch or pitch. Pixel pitch is measured in millimeter by the distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the pixel adjacent to it. The smaller the distance means there are more pixels in an LED cluster, thus, the higher the resolution of the display
Pixel pitch values influence the optimal viewing distance for a display. If you have a higher pixel pitch, and your viewer is too close, the picture will be grainy and individual pixels are (undesirably) viewable to the user.
With lower pixel pitch values, your display reaches a higher quality of picture display, allowing for smoother, crisper lines and finer details. Increased pixel density is not ideal for all applications; it is generally best for close viewing distance. The longer the viewing distance, the high pixel density does not have many visual benefits and might simply just increase the cost of the display.
By determining the best viewing distance for your display and application, you will be able to select the best value for your LED screen. The LED industry uses three methods to figure out a good viewing distance:
10x Rule—this is a shorthand method for calculating an approximate estimate of the Visual Acuity Distance. The calculation is: Pixel Pitch x 10 = Approximate Viewing Distance in Feet
Visual Acuity Distance –also known as retina distance, this is a formulated calculation of the distance a person with 20/20 vision must move away from an LED screen to see a coherent image that is not pixelated. The calculation is: Pixel Pitch x 3438 = Visual Acuity in Feet.
The Average Comfortable Viewing Distance – this is an estimate of what would be a comfortable viewing distance for most people. This is a subjective estimate and will take into account variables like a person’s eye sight, resolution of content and type of content.
It is also important to note pixels per inch (PPI), which is simply how many pixels you would find in a single square inch on a display. All pixels are not created equally, however; pixels are different sizes on different sized displays. PPI depends a lot on the resolution of your screen.
To find your display’s PPI, you will need your display’s diagonal size in inches and the resolution of the screen. Use the chart below to find your PPI already calculated for you; if it’s not on the chart, the equation is as follows:
In an LCD screen, resolution is the number of pixels contained in a display monitor. Resolution is represented as a pair of numbers indicating the number of pixels vertically and horizontally, such as 800x600. Image sharpness is determined by the resolution as well as the size of the display. A smaller monitor with a resolution of 800x600 will have a better resolution than a larger monitor with the same 800x600 resolution.
If you’ve noticed unusual spots on your display, you might be dealing with stuck or dead pixels. Fortunately, these pixels are usually harmless and can be detected using special pixel tests.
How many dead pixels are acceptable on an OLED TV? According to many manufacturers, it’s normal to have between one and five dead pixels. Manufacturers will generally only replace the panel under warranty if there are more than approximately five dead pixels.
A dead pixel is a malfunction that is more or less permanent and does not go away over time. Dead pixels are rare on digital camera LCDs and sensors – manufacturers typically take care of dead pixels during their extensive Quality Assurance (QA) process.
One dead pixel on a new machine or display is one too many. Get it replaced with one that isn’t defective. If they give you any crap ask someone at an Apple store to show you a desktop, display, or notebook on display with a dead pixel.
Dead pixels are much less likely to correct themselves over time, and typically cannot be repaired through any of several popular methods. The most popular method for repairing a stuck pixel is to try running pixel fixing software. Stuck pixels can often be re-energized by rapidly turning them on and off.
To avoid dead pixles, take very good care of your monitor. You can get dead pixles if you are moving it and put it down to hard, or bringing it on a rough car ride. Just be super carful in order to stay dead pixle free.
All current display types (LCD, LED, OLED, etc.) can produce dead pixels. There are other differences between various display types, such as OLED being more susceptible to screen burn-in, but the risks of dead pixels are relatively even across all TV types.
It’s up-to you. You’re paying for it, if you’re unhappy with it just exchange. I personally can’t stand dead pixel and if it’s noticeable I’d definitely exchange. Also, some manufacturers don’t consider dead pixels a manufacturing defect unless there are 4-5+ dead pixels.
Head over to a web-based program such as Dead Pixels Test, dead-pixels.com, Dead-pixel Check, or LCD Dead-pixel Test. Any of these programs will be easy to use and display solid colors, enabling you to spot dead pixels with ease.
A dead pixel won’t turn on, whereas a stuck pixel is permanently on. Since it’s permanently on, it typically appears as a bright, persistent dot on the screen, and is either red, green, blue, or white. If a problematic pixel is dead, it should look like a small black rectangle.
What causes dead pixels exactly? Most instances of dead pixels are the result of a failed power connection. Pixels require power to change color. If the power connection to a pixel is cut off, it will become a black and dead pixel.
A “dead pixel” in a digital image is the result of a set of non-functioning photodiodes. They’re not returning too-high values (such as all blue) they’re turning no values at all (which results in a pitch black spot).
Some people have said it has fixed a dead pixel for them, many say it didn’t work. It is free to try though, asides from that, a dead pixel is a dead pixel. Ignore it or buy a new display. Check the store you purchased it from for their policy, most won’t replace it over one dead pixel though.
Dead pixels are either black or white all the time, regardless of what’s on the screen. White pixels are actually called “hot” pixels, but they’re principally identical to dead pixels. If you determine that your monitor has a dead pixel, you’ll need to either take it into a repair department or replace the screen.
For other classes, most manufacturers will consider one dead pixel as acceptable. This means that they probably won’t replace your new monitor because of it.
A dead pixel test involves running your monitor in full-screen mode through a palette of basic colors or black and white to identify the stuck pixel. To do this, clean your screen with a soft cloth, and then open the Dead Pixels Test site on your browser.
Cause. During the LCD manufacturing process, it is not uncommon for one or more subpixels to get into an unchanging state causing a bright or dead pixel. A display with 1 to 5 fixed subpixel is considered normal and within industry standards.

There are three methods of repairing the pixels: pressure, rubbing and tapping. To use pressure, find a ballpoint pen or a dull pencil and a washcloth, and fold the washcloth over. Then turn off your television, put the cloth over the affected pixel and apply light pressure only to that area using the pen.
JScreenFix claims it can repair most stuck pixels in under 10 minutes, but giving it plenty of time to work never hurts. Try using it several times if the first run wasn’t successful.
The pixel may just need a kick-start. To restart your phone or tablet, press and hold the power button, then tap Restart when it appears. If the pixel is still black, continue Using a Pixel Fixing App.
Dead pixels often occur in the LCD screens of computers, televisions and other devices. This happens when a component fails and causes a pixel to go black. Sometimes this can spread to other pixels, which can appear as a “hole” in the screen.
I am going to show you how to fix a stuck pixel on your LCD monitor. Stuck pixels are really annoying and just plain look bad. Over the past few years I have had to fix SO many stuck pixels. It"s not that hard to do and usually only takes a couple of minutes. Enjoy!
This will only work on LCD monitors, but this includes computer LCD monitors, laptop screens, cameras (the screen might have a hard protective shield over it that you will have to take off), and hand-held systems (will most likely have a hard protective shield). Does anybody know if this will work with an OLED screen? I think that it will, but I"m not positive.
Note: This will only fix stuck pixels. Not dead pixels or hot pixels. A dead pixel is when the pixel is always off. It is easiest to spot a dead pixel against a white background. The pixel will appear to be non existent. It will look darker than the stuck pixel in the image below. A hot pixel is when the pixel is always on. It is easiest to see against a dark background. The pixel will be bright white. A stuck pixel will usually the red, green, blue or yellow, but can also be a light black color (pictured below). A stuck pixel is caused by a manufacturing defect in which it leaves one or more sub-pixels permanently turned on or off.
By the way, the picture that I took is a bad example of a stuck pixel. Because it is black, one might think that it is actually a dead pixel but it is not. It just so happened that all of the sub-pixels in that pixel were permanently turned off. The next time I see a dead pixel on a computer that isn"t black, I will update the picture because the current one is a bad example.
This is the most traditional method. It fixes the stuck pixel by rapidly flashing different colors to try to get it to change. This method works very well, but if you do it for to long, it can actually create more stuck pixels. Get it here or download it below. The site claims that it can also reduce burn in on plasma displays but I have not tested it yet.
Open the java applet and resize it so that the window is very small. Now move the window over to where your stuck pixel is. Leave it be for five minutes than close the window and see if it"s fixed. If its not than repeat again for another five minutes. The site says that it may take up to 20 minutes but I have found that it usually works within the first 10.
I have not tested his batch file method yet (I have a mac) so please tell me your results. And obviously the batch file method will not work for macs.
This method is done by placing a damp (not wet!) paper towel over you monitor. Place your stylus or blunt pencil tip on the paper towel over where the stuck pixel is. You have to place it exactly on the stuck pixel. Now turn of your monitor and apply a small amount of pressure to the stylus / pencil. Wait two seconds and then turn your monitor back on. Your stuck pixel should be fixed! If it is not, try repeating but this time, apply a little more pressure.
This method works because a stuck pixel is a pixel in which the liquid in the liquid crystal has not or not completely spread to this pixel. The backlight uses this liquid and lets different amounts of light through. This affects the color of the pixel. The pressure helps the liquid in the liquid crystal move around.
This final method works but can easily create more stuck pixels or even do some real damage so be careful. First you need to display a dark color / image over your stuck pixel. (Make sure it"s really showing a dark color / image and not just a blank signal) Take the back of your stylus, or another small, blunt object, and lightly tap on the stuck pixel. You should briefly see a white spot where you tapped. If not, then tap a little harder. Keep tapping, each time tapping a little harder. This should only take about 5-10 taps. This should correct the stuck pixel. Be careful thought, because doing it too many times may cause damage to your monitor.
I have a new ASUS XG49VQ monitor, and I have had to return the first one due to over 20 stuck pixels. This one (monitor #2) had only one. So, I decided to live with it; that is untill this morning. I started to tap, then smack the side bezel of my screen. This seemed to move my stuck pixel. Then I smacked around more. This created more. I then started to flick my screen at each point. They started to subside. I then came across this instructible, and now I just have to press lightly on one that pops up and it fades back into submission. I suppose I found out why this ultrawide, entry level HDR monitor was only 799.99 brand new. LOL. Thank you for the advice, saved me from returning and getting a 3rd unit, or breaking down and just buy another monitor.
Hi, i have a question: can stuck pixels be fixed if they are all in a straight line that comes down across the screen? I m trying all these methods on my IMAC but its not working. Can you help me out?
Can you describe it more? Is it a vertical or horizontal line, or is it a diagonal line? Is it a solid line, or is it a bunch of stuck pixels that just happen to be in a line-like shape? If it is a solid vertical, or horizontal line, then it is a faulty lcd, and there is nothing you can do. Also, is your iMac the newer one that is aluminum and black? If it is, than the display has a glass/plastic plate over the lcd making method 2 & 3 useless.0
They can get some image retention in very odd situations... but it takes months and months of a static image for it to happen... while a plasma screen will have image retention in a matter of minutes.
99.99% of regular pc users would never notice image retention unless they never turned their monitors off and always left the exact image on the screens all day long 24/7 for years.
Plasma and even the newer OLED screens have it bad. Its why OLED"s high cost, and its poor pixel lifespan make it a fairly useless tech since for much less money you can get a mainstream LCD/LED display and with new tech like HDR, the contrast ratio is on footing with OLED but has the pixel life and almost zero chance of image retention, makes OLED very unwelcome unless it became cheaper than LCD screens.0
As others have mentioned this is either a video card issue or bad/dying LCD column driver. The latter are not fixable (to the best of my knowledge.) while according to the poster above the former are a silent recall issue for the iMac.0
This actually worked. I just noticed 4 dark/dead pixels on my screen (noticeable on a while image). I used that UDPixel program for around 30 minutes and it didn"t work by just using it by itself.
But i kept it running while also using a damp paper towl and used my finger and just rotated it around a bit on the pixel for a few seconds and it fixed all 4 dead pixels.
If it doesn"t work for you, keep trying and let your screen warm up a lot and run that pixel program to really work it up and use some massage action on the area with a bit of gentle pressure with your soft finger and see how it goes. I wouldn"t use a solid object. Your finger and paper towel is better because its nice and soft.
As some mentioned in other comments, if it happens again just keep doing it and it should go away again and is this is a very nice trick... My current monitor is a 2560x1080p LG ultrawide (34UM67). But i"ve got a really old 15 year old lcd monitor with a dead pixel i want to try this out and see if it works on it.0
My display has been running great for 4 whole years, and then yesterday it suddenly developed a very bright red spot in an edge. It was annoying, my eyes would always go to that spot, the more i tried to avoid the more i found myself looking at it.
Tried the third method using a smooth metal pen button (the click-click one!), and it worked after a few taps! Thanks! Finally my 4-year black pixel went away! Bye bye!0
