I purchased a Sondor Step in January 2020. I received it in February 2020. The LCD screen would not register the battery, mph, etc. I called. They sent me a new LCD. It did not fix the problem. They then asked that I run the battery down. Said battery appeared fine and they would need to speak with colleagues and get back to me. They never did. The battery is not fine btw. Email after email, call after call they just sent out a new controller for me to install. It didn’t fix the problem. I emailed them. I called them. No response. I called sales they tried to send email on my behalf. After multiple emails asking that they pick up the bike, because it’s a lemon they finally sent new email for 15 minute tech appointment. Tech said he didn’t know what to do. We could drive bike to shop in Venice. We are South Orange County. We asked to speak to manager. Was told she was busy and would call us back. Waited a week no call. Set up another service call and asked what our options are he said “I’m not her boss, she is mine I don’t know when or if she will call you” He said “see if she calls” we said unacceptable. He said he’d see if she was available for phone call. She got on and said she could have someone service bike. I said when? Because it is now April 20th. I said it needs to be done this week. She said it could and she’d call me back. No call and called Grant this morning and no service appointment set up. I am extremely disappointed in SONDOR. I have been more than accommodating. I would not recommend to anyone. Still waiting and would like to ride my bike with my kids during this quarantine.

The bike LCD screen is able to display basic information such as MPH, an overall odometer and some other metrics that might be useful. There"s supposedly some buried, unused, functionality that I"ve yet to explore.

Unfotunately this bike has no lights in any configuration. It DOES have an optional rear-mounted rack but that"s about it. Not a lot to choose from and that"s a shame. I"ve added my own lights for night riding but they are the furthest thing from what I would conside "integrated." The LCD has some sort of light support too but nothing officially from Sondors as of this post.

I did have to recruit support since I actually bought two of these bikes. One bike has a squeaky hub and/or cassette. The issue as of this posting is yet unresolved. Sondors touts a 90-day warranty. This is pretty shitty. Other companies will do better. The support can be best described as generic. You send an e-mail, some ticket in some shit system is created and some random person answers your ticket with scripted, generic responses. It"s the absolute epitome of what happens when companies scrape for every dollar. Since my issue is yet to be resolved, I"d say support for the bike is "average" at best. As a side note, I did have a friend who had his Fold X have not one, but TWO badly bent forks during shipping. His bike was made whole eventually so reaching to support CAN work it appears. Your mileage may vary here!

Sondors is taking orders for bikes with no intention of providing bikes within the next year, if ever. I placed an order for the Rockstar E-Bike at the start of September and was told through the website, customer service, and the call center that it would ship to me in late September. It is now going on the third week of October. After I confirmed with 11 emails and twelve phone calls, ******, I got disturbing information from Customer Service. It started with your E-Bike is currently being made, then it is delayed, then still delayed, then it will be shipping in two weeks, then it arrived from China and will ship in two weeks from our Commerce City warehouse in CA-September 26th, then, then, then. I requested a call back from a manager. No deal managers don"t call; by the way, they are really busy-These are quotes from ******. Then after many calls, I was promised calls five times that supervision would call me. Never happened. So I asked again about my bike again. It has now arrived from China and is being processed in California. It will ship in two weeks. 2 months and counting, the e-bike is nowhere to be found, no manager has called me back, no information to provide to me other than we are getting information from the company, but honestly don"t know anything about where your bike is. Sondors is not a legitimate company that advises people to stay clear of their false advertising online, through their call centers, they are intentionally leading people with false claims about this company. More than likely, it is a scam company. If not, they have serious supply chain issues and, more important, won"t guarantee or stand behind the product. I insist that that state on their website that they have a backlog and will ship when they should be saying it may take many months. I want them to stop taking money to be in line to get a bike. It"s a false promise. I have called at least 10 times as well to speak to mgr!

SONDORS Inc. management has been in contact with said customer. Our goal is to fulfill said customer"s order and we empathize with him in the frustration of having to wait for item delivery. However, we have assured said customer that his SONDORS has cleared manufacturing and will be on the way shortly. We will remain in contact with said customer until the item is fulfilled.

E-bike entrepreneur: An article in the Feb. 28 Business section about entrepreneur Storm Sondors’ electric bicycle project and his living with Asperger’s misspelled his last name as Sonders. —

Sondors, with his surfer tan and beach boy blond ponytail, was 38 when a therapist first identified his condition three years ago. Growing up in Latvia, he said, his parents recognized something strange and special about him before he turned 3.

The eccentricity expressed itself in isolation and creativity. Sondors had difficulty going to school and playing with other children. Withdrawing, he became obsessed with woodworking, finished high school at 14 and went to art school as a sculptor.

“He was always very driven — like a freight train,” said Todd Hannon, who has known and worked with Sondors for more than 20 years. “There was some odd behavior. He’d just suddenly walk out of a room. He’d blurt things out. People would say, ‘That guy is way too intense.’ ”

Therapy followed. Sondors practiced making eye contact and listening to questions, gradually learning how to be comfortable around other people. That made the electric bike campaign possible, he said.

According to Jonathan Chaupin of Agency 2.0, Sonders’ fundraising campaign partner, the company has already sold 6,000 units of the Sondors E-Bike — all through the Internet, on the strength of a prototype and a series of public test rides — to become the third-most-successful campaign in Indiegogo’s five-year history.

Most chose the latter, Sondors said. The first investors committed $499 for one of the brightly colored, fat-tire beach cruisers. Later investors were asked to pay $599 for a bike.

Either way, that’s far less than the cost of most electric bikes, which often sell for $2,500 or more, and less than half of the post-campaign price for the Sondors E-Bike, which will cost $1,299, plus a fee of about $200 for shipping.

The bike project began organically. Sondors, who had sold his toy company and was spending his days surfing and paddle-boarding, got interested in electric bikes after being sidelined with a knee injury. Last summer, he saw a friend’s fat-tire electric bike and loved it.

The bicycles are assembled in the Chinese manufacturing city of Shenzhen. The first units will be shipped in May, Sondors said, with deliveries to the people who contributed to the Indiegogo campaign continuing through the summer.

As part of the process, not long after the diagnosis, Sondors told his parents what the therapist had determined. His father was stunned. His mother wept.

The diagnosis and the therapy didn’t eliminate Sondors’ autism. (“It’s a daily work,” he said. “You have to try. You have to stay present.”) He still prefers to surf alone and, though he owns a Dodge Durango, finds driving in traffic extremely stressful.

But freed from a lifetime of struggling to explain his quirkiness — to himself, and to friends and girlfriends — Sondors now wonders whether sharing his experience might help others in his situation.

That knowledge allowed Sondors, for the first time, to interact comfortably with strangers. He now regularly engages with customers who want test drives of his e-bike.

The updated 500c Bafang display (aka the Luna Mighty Mini display) available here for $69 is a display that is worth buying on its own and upgrading whatever display you are running. Lunacycle had this display developed to fit bikes like the Luna Banana which didn’t have a display that worked very well for it, and Bafang is now reselling it to their other dealers. I have about 12 Bafang displays right now, many of them are pretty beat up with broken brackets and screens and so I bit the bullet and just ordered one to test with. I really liked it, both because of the color display, the wattage graph on the left side that fills up with bars showing you at a glance how much juice you’re chugging (in watts) as well as native support for 52v nominal battery packs.
