My mid 2011 27" iMac 10.13.3 Radeon 6970 blanks out (flashlight trick does not work) while second monitor remains active. I can be in mirror mode or not. It may or may not flicker intermittently before blacking, or after recovery. Usually, the only way I can recover is to use the Sleep command from the second monitor (forces me to use mirror or insure the second is setup to have the menu bar).

Starting in 2018, Apple integrated the SMC chip to a larger multifunctional chip called Apple T2 security chip in the new Macs. The T2 chip takes over the duty of SMC. If the T2 chip is not functional, it won’t respond to the power button and your iMac won’t power on.
If you updated your iMac’s macOS to one that contains a device firmware update (DFU) but failed to complete the whole process for some reason, you could end up with T2 chip firmware corruption. In other words, you may have bricked your iMac.
To fix a bricked iMac, you need a working host MacBook and download the firmware from Apple’s website. Then you force the bricked iMac into DFU mode so you can transfer the firmware to the bricked iMac via a USB-C cable.
Press and hold the power button. While holding the power button, plug in the power cord of your iMac. Continue to hold the power button for about 3-5 seconds until you see the DFU logo on the Host MacBook.
Now the host MacBook will download the correct firmware version from Apple’s server and install it to your bricked iMac. This may take up to 5 minutes.
After finishing the installation, your iMac will automatically power on. If you can see the Apple logo, congratulations! You have successfully saved the bricked iMac.
iMac power supply failures account for the majority of dead iMacs. If you have gone through all the checks discussed above and your iMac still doesn’t turn on, you most likely have a failed power supply, especially if your iMac won’t turn on after power outage.
To get access to the power supply, you need to remove the iMac screen. In the pre-2011 iMacs, Apple uses eight screws to attach the screen to the iMac frame. In the post-2011 iMacs, Apple used double-sided sticky tapes to attach the screen to the iMac frame. Take extreme care when you remove the iMac screen as it is very easy to break the screen.

There are four diagnostic LED lights on every model of iMacs. The location of the LEDs varies in different models. The behaviour of the LED lights can tell you a lot of information.
S5 Led. It indicates the logic board has received power from the power supply and currently in standby mode (technical term S5 state). In other words, the iMac is ready for you to push the button to turn it on.
VIDEO ON led. When the GPU has detected an iMac screen connecting to the logic board, the GPU will turn on the backlight of the screen and the VIDEO ON led. Then the GPU will output video signals to the screen.
Remove the iMac screen as described above and plug in the power cord to the main powerpoint. If the first LED light (standby light) is on, push the iMac power button and follow the instructions below to diagnose the logic board.
Once you push the iMac power button, the standby light goes off. This symptom indicates that the logic board has a shorted circuit. The shorted circuit draws an unusual amount of current from the power supply, therefore the power supply cut off output to protect itself.
When you push the power button, the standby light remains on, the other three lights are off. This symptom indicates that the logic board is not responding to the power button. Double-check the iMac power button and make sure it is functional. If the power button is ok, then the logic board is faulty.
When you press the button, only two lights are on. This symptom indicates the graphics section of the logic board is faulty. Graphics card failures are very common for iMacs manufactured between 2007 to 2011.

The LCD panel is the part of the screen that displays the image, it is the part of the screen that you can touch when the computer is open. This is the most commonly broken part on a MacBook Air screen. If you have a cracked screen, there is a very big chance that what you need is an LCD replacement.
The display assembly is the entire top half of the computer. It includes the LCD panel, the back housing where the Apple logo is, the clutch cover along the bottom of the screen where it says “MacBook Air”, the iSight camera, and the hinges. If there are any bends or dents on the corners of your display, you will likely need to replace the entire display assembly.
The clutch cover runs along the bottom of the MacBook screen. It is the part that says “MacBook Air” on it. Sometimes I see clutch covers that are cracked or broken while the LCD panel itself is working fine! This means the computer works perfectly and the entire screen is visible and working, but there is a crack along the bottom of the screen in the part that says “MacBook Air” on it. If this is the issue you have, you just need a clutch cover replacement rather than an LCD replacement.
The MacBook Air camera almost never has an issue. If the camera does stop responding, the issue is almost always with the logic board inside your computer rather than the camera itself. Sometimes though, the cameras will fail and require replacement. Unfortunately with the way these MacBook Airs are assembled, you usually have to replace the LCD panel when you replace the camera.
The back housing is sometimes referred to as the “lid”. It is the part that has the Apple logo on it. Usually, the housing does not need to be replaced, but if there is a dent on the corner of the housing, a dent on the housing itself, or if liquid damage is present in the housing, then you will need the housing replaced as well as the LCD. Again, because of the way these are assembled you normally can’t replace just the housing by itself.
The MacBook Air LCD replacement process is one that I don’t recommend for a beginner to an intermediate-level technician to attempt. It is best to start practicing with bad screens before moving on to these repairs. They are delicate and you can cause all kinds of problems during the repair by scratching backlight sheets or ripping cables under the LCD panel.
I will say I have seen a lot of damaged screens when people attempt to repair the LCD panel on a MacBook Air themselves. Normally the damage is not fixable and you have to then replace the entire display assembly. If you are experienced enough to complete the repair, you can find the panels on public sites like iFixit, eBay, Amazon, etc. As a shop, you will probably want to work with your vendor to get panels that have a guarantee so you can hold them in stock. Generally, the panels decrease in price with time, but sometimes if an LCD panel is not used frequently by apple, they will become rare and cost more over time for new ones.

When you turn on your Mac, it should display a gray or dark, almost black screen as it searches for your startup drive. Which color is shown depends on the model and age of your Mac. Once the drive is detected, you will see a blue screen as your Mac loads the boot information from your startup drive and then displays the desktop.
Some Mac users won"t actually see a blue or gray screen. With the advent of Retina displays and extended color spaces that the Mac now supports, the old blue and gray screens can appear much darker, almost black on Macs that have built-in displays, making it harder to discern which color the screen is. I bought a used 27 inch late 2009 iMac about a month ago. At first I was delighted with it. I went on holiday shortly after taking delivery of it and only when I returned and it was too late to return it a big problem showed up. The screen would go black after a short time, yet everything else worked, just the screen would switch itself off. Turning it on again with ctrl-shift-eject would have the screen display for a couple of seconds then switch off. Naturally I hit the Internet and researched what I could. I did the usual - PRAM reset, the S something, can"t remember, installed an App called TG Pro to crank the 3 fans up, turned the brightness down much lower than I would like and all of this helped, but did not solve the problem. Turning the brightness up to maximum would cause the screen to go dark after a few seconds.
