Looking to take your project to the next level in terms of functionality and appearance? A custom LCD display might be the thing that gets you there, at least compared to the dot-matrix or seven-segment displays that anyone and their uncle can buy from the usual sources for pennies. But how does one create such a thing, and what are the costs involved? As is so often the case these days, it’s simpler and cheaper than you think, and [Dave Jones] has a great primer on designing and specifying custom LCDs.

We’re amazed at how low the barrier to entry into custom electronics has become, and even if you don’t need a custom LCD, at these prices it’s tempting to order one just because you can. Of course, you can also build your own LCD display completely from scratch too.

Companies from both India and China have shown interest in buying Samsung Display’s liquid crystal display (LCD) equipment at its now-defunct L8-1 LCD production line, TheElec has learned.

L8-1 line was previously used by the South Korean display panel maker to manufacture panels for TV and IT products, but the line went offline during the first quarter of this year. Samsung Display has previously said it was exiting its LCD business.

However, companies from India are likely to be more aggressive in purchasing the equipment as the government there is planning to promote their LCD industry, they said.

Meanwhile, India is yet to make meaningful inroads in the LCD space due to a lack of infrastructure that can support the industry, such as readily available electricity and water.

However, according to India Cellular and Electronics Association, local LCD demand is expected to grow to US$18.9 billion in 2025 from its current US$5.4 billion.

The firm initially intended to wrap up its exit from the LCD business last year but had been extending production from the request of Samsung Electronics’ TV business.

L8-1, which is a Gen 8.5 line, halted production during the first quarter this year. Component company YMC had started dismantling the installed LCD equipment in July. The process will be wrapped up in May next year. L8-2 is currently manufacturing LCD panels.

Manufacturing is the process of making the components that go into the iPhone. While Apple designs and sells the iPhone, it doesn"t manufacture its components. Instead, Apple uses manufacturers from around the world to deliver individual parts. The manufacturers specialize in particular items—camera specialists manufacture the lens and camera assembly, screen specialists build the display, and so on.

The world"s biggest manufacturer of made-in-China consumer electronics agreed to a sprawling "Generation 10.5" manufacturing campus — industry-speak for a monumental industrial facility capable of producing outsized flat-screen monitors used in the biggest TVs and liquid-crystal displays.

With soft demand and falling prices, Asian flat-panel manufacturers are expected to idle existing flat-screen capacity or convert them to produce other products, Nakane said.

But whether the screens are large or small, Wisconsin placed its bet on a volatile consumer electronics sector in which products often have short life cycles.

Will Racine County get a facility that produces smaller screens for smartphones, tablets, smaller TVs and screens for the dashboards of cars — products already mass-produced in Asia? A TV factory that does final assembly with parts shipped from Asia? New research-and-development teams to explore technologies but not necessarily manufacture them?

But Gen-6 is less precisely defined than Gen-10.5, which adds to the uncertainty. Gen-6 screens can mean smartphones, mobile devices, small TVs or dashboard screens in cars. Gen-6 plants are smaller and require less investment. They can use smaller cuts of glass that are shipped from Asia or elsewhere in the U.S.

All the while,  the industry in Asia remains in flux. It"s been less than two years since Wisconsin"s 2017 announcement, and flat-screen suppliers already are moving onto next-new-thing panels that don"t even involve glass. They include flexible screens for "foldable phones" and "rollable televisions."

TOKYO, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Japan"s Sharp Corpsaid on Monday it will set up a venture with China Electronics Corp (CEC) to make LCD TV panels from 8th-generation glass substrates in Nanjing to meet growing demand in China.

Consumers are making a quick shift to LCD TVs in China, where unit TV shipments are hitting record highs thanks to government stimulus packages, but where price competition has intensified against Chinese makers.

Sharp, which trails Samsung Electronicsand Sony Corpin sales of LCD TVs, said that it was still in talks with CEC and Nanjing City about how much it will invest in the venture and the timing of production.

Sharp also said on Monday it will sell older equipment to make LCD panels using smaller 6th-generation substrates to a joint venture set up between CEC unit Nanjing China Electronics Panda Group Corp (CEC Panda) and Nanjing City.

Nanjing CEC-Panda LCD Technology Co is expected to come online in March 2011, with an initial monthly production capacity of 60,000 glass substrates, to be lifted to 80,000 substrates a month.

Sharp also said it will set up an LCD research and development centre in Nanjing in April 2010, as it seeks to make LCD products geared for the China market.

Foxconn"s plant will produce liquid-crystal display panels, or LCDs, that are used in televisions and computer screens. The factory will be located in the congressional district of House Speaker Paul Ryan. It would mark a substantial gain for a state that currently has 472,000 manufacturing jobs and is still recovering from factory layoffs — including the closure of a General Motors plant in Ryan"s hometown — that hit after the 2008 financial crisis.
