NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- LCD TV prices will fall to their lowest levels of all time this Black Friday, as television manufacturers try to use bargains to revive struggling sales.
"It"s a self-fulfilling prophecy," said Paul Gagnon, director of TV research at DisplaySearch. "But this year, softer demand is really taking a toll. Set makers" profitability is pretty terrible right now, so there"s lots of pressure to have a good holiday."
DisplaySearch predicts that 32-inch LCD TVs will be offered at or below $200. Both 40- and 42-inch sets will be priced in a range of $200-$400, and 55- and 60-inch LCD TVs will be offered below $1,000 for the first time, with the cheapest big-screen TV sets priced as low as $600 on Black Friday.
Bargains for plasma screens, which tend to be more expensive than LCD TVs, will be good, but the discounts won"t be nearly as extreme as those on LCD sets.
One caution for deal hunters: Manufacturers have become much more conservative in their inventories this year, reducing their orders for LCD panels as demand continued to slip. Factories that make TV sets were operating at just 70% this fall, IHS iSuppli said.
Just 11% of LCD TV sales are of sets with 3-D capabilities, though the expensive TVs did make up 27% of manufacturers" revenues this past quarter, according to DisplaySearch.

Since 1983, Planar display solutions have benefitted countless organizations in every application. Planar displays are usually front and center, dutifully delivering the visual experiences and critical information customers need, with proven technology that is built to withstand the rigors of constant use.
An on-screen display (OSD) is an image superimposed on a screen picture, commonly used by modern television sets, VCRs, and DVD players to display information such as volume, channel, and time.
In the past, most adjustments on TV sets were performed with analog controls such as potentiometers and switches. This was used more recently also in monochrome portable TVs. After remote controls were invented, digital adjustments became common. They needed an external display, which was LED, LCD, or VFD based. Including this display increased manufacturing costs.
When electronics became more advanced, it became clear that adding some extra devices for an OSD was cheaper than adding a second display device. TV screens had become much bigger and could display much more information than a small second display. OSDs display graphical information superimposed over the picture, which is done by synchronizing the reading from OSD video memory with the TV signal.
Some of the first OSD-equipped televisions were introduced by RCA in the late 1970s, simply displaying the channel number and the time of day at the bottom of the screen. An OSD chip was added to the General instruments (GI) varactor tuning chip set designed in conjunction with RCA and Telefunken. The original OSD was merely to placate users who were faced with a snowy screen during auto tuning. Something the original architecture had not seen as an issue until it was first demonstrated. Once a display had been injected, at least in 1981, a real-time clock (RTC) was added to display time and date on video terminals
In the 1980s, OSD-capable TVs started to be more common, such as Zenith"s "System 3" series. Akai have been credited with the introduction of OSD in VCRs in the 1980s, including the introduction of on screen programming.VFD or LCD in the VCR. Eventually, as VCRs declined in popularity and prices fell, many manufacturers dropped the internal display completely, relying completely on the on-screen display. All DVD players also use on-screen displays. Many PAL television sets use the internal Teletext decoder"s graphics rendering system to further reduce costs.
More recently (as of about 2005), the decline in CRT-based TV sets and rise in LCD/plasma televisions has seen the use and availability of dedicated OSD devices decline, as it is more cost effective to integrate OSD functions inside the main graphics processor. Modern LCD television monitors usually incorporate only two or three integrated circuits. Examples of integrated circuits to perform dedicated OSD are MAX7456 and STV5730. Both operate with NTSC or PAL, mixing with an existing signal or self-generating. Both have slightly different capabilities. This can be done by PIC video superimposer too.
Akai produced consumer video cassette recorders (VCR) during the 1980s. The Akai VS-2 was the first VCR with an on-screen display, originally named the Interactive Monitor System. By displaying the information directly on the television screen, this innovation eliminated the need for the user to be physically near the VCR to program recording, read the tape counter, or perform other common features. Within a few years, all competing manufacturers had adopted on-screen display technology in their own products.
Some computer software also uses OSDs, especially support programs for so-called "enhanced keyboards", which often had additional medias like skipping through music tracks and volume adjustment. Their use outside this field is still uncommon. On-screen displays are also used in camcorders, and can display various information both on the viewfinder and on the TV set the camcorder is connected to.
The complexity of graphics offered by such displays has greatly increased over the years, from simple monochrome images to intricate graphical user interfaces.
Several problems exist with regard to on-screen displays. One of them is diagnostics if a television"s display system is damaged. Without any external screens, it is almost impossible (without opening the TV) to determine the source of the error. TV accessories that depend heavily on OSDs, such as VCRs or DVD players, are also difficult to configure without the use of a TV. On older VCRs, it was possible to program recording timers without turning on the TV; a modern VCR requires the user to turn on the TV to do so. Usability is generally also decreased with OSDs, as it is necessary to control a multitude of parameters with a few buttons, where earlier, real analog controls with mechanical feedback were available.
Choosing which type of monitor panel type to buy will depend largely on your intended usage and personal preference. After all, gamers, graphic designers, and office workers all have different requirements. Specific types of displays are best suited for different usage scenarios.
IPS monitors continue to be the display technology of choice for users that want color accuracy and consistency. IPS monitors are really great when it comes to color performance and super-wide viewing angles. The expansive viewing angles provided by IPS monitors help to deliver outstanding color when being viewed from different angles. One major differentiator between IPS monitors and TN monitors is that colors on an IPS monitor won’t shift when being viewed at an angle as drastically as they do on a TN monitor.

TN monitors, or “Twisted Nematic” monitors, are the oldest LCD panel types around. TN panels cost less than their IPS and VA counterparts and are a popular mainstream display technology for desktop and laptop displays.
Despite their lower perceived value, TN-based displays are the panel type preferred by competitive gamers. The reason for this is because TN panels can achieve a rapid response time and the fastest refresh rates on the market (like this 240Hz eSports monitor). To this effect, TN monitors are able to reduce blurring and screen tearing in fast-paced games when compared to an IPS or VA panel.
For general-purpose use, these shifts in color and contrast are often irrelevant and fade from conscious perception. However, this color variability makes TN monitors a poor choice for color-critical work like graphic design and photo editing. Graphic designers and other color-conscious users should also avoid TN displays due to their more limited range of color display compared to the other technologies.
TN monitors are the least expensive panel technology, making them ideal for cost-conscious businesses and consumers. In addition, TN monitors enjoy unmatched popularity with competitive gamers and other users who seek rapid graphics display.
These high-end VA-type monitors rival IPS monitors as the best panel technology for professional-level color-critical applications. One of the standout features of VA technology is that it is particularly good at blocking light from the backlight when it’s not needed. This enables VA panels to display deeper blacks and static contrast ratios of up to several times higher than the other LCD technologies. The benefit of this is that VA monitors with high contrast ratios can deliver intense blacks and richer colors.
These monitors also provide more visible details in shadows and highlights, making them ideal for enjoying videos and movies. They’re also a good fit for games focused on rich imagery (RPG games for example) rather than rapid speed (such as FPS games).
MVA and other recent VA technologies offer the highest static contrast ratios of any panel technology. This allows for an outstanding visual experience for movie enthusiasts and other users seeking depth of detail. Higher-end, feature-rich MVA displays offer the consistent, authentic color representation needed by graphic designers and other pro users.
There is another type of panel technology that differs from the monitor types discussed above and that is OLED or “Organic Light Emitting Diode” technology. OLEDs differ from LCDs because they use positively/negatively charged ions to light up every pixel individually, while LCDs use a backlight, which can create an unwanted glow. OLEDs avoid screen glow (and create darker blacks) by not using a backlight. One of the drawbacks of OLED technology is that it is usually pricier than any of the other types of technology explained.
When it comes to choosing the right LCD panel technology, there is no single right answer. Each of the three primary technologies offers distinct strengths and weaknesses. Looking at different features and specs helps you identify which monitor best fits your needs.
LCD or “Liquid Crystal Display” is a type of monitor panel that embraces thin layers of liquid crystals sandwiched between two layers of filters and electrodes.
While CRT monitors used to fire electrons against glass surfaces, LCD monitors operate using backlights and liquid crystals. The LCD panel is a flat sheet of material that contains layers of filters, glass, electrodes, liquid crystals, and a backlight. Early LCD panels used passive-matrix technology and were criticized for blurry imagery. The reason for this is because quick image changes require liquid crystals to change phase quickly and passive matrix technology was limited in terms of how quickly liquid crystals could change phase.
Thanks to active-matrix technology, LCD monitor panels were able to change images very quickly and the technology began being used by newer LCD panels.
Ultimately, budget and feature preferences will determine the best fit for each user. Among the available monitors of each panel type there will also be a range of price points and feature sets. Additionally, overall quality may vary among manufacturers due to factors related to a display’s components, manufacturing, and design.

As people emerge from their Covid-19 hideouts, demand for screens is likely to drop, and this is happening as Chinese makers dominate the business and threaten to dump screens and wreck the market.
For LCD panels for 65-inch UHD TVs, the average price has increased 4 percent from $274 to $285 month-on-month. When compared to a year ago, that price surged 72 percent from $165.
According to market research company DSCC, the first quarter revenue of 13 LCD companies globally is estimated at $34.8 billion. That’s a 52 percent increase over the same period in 2020.
The possibility of a drop coming with the end of the pandemic brings back memories of the nightmare of two years ago, when the average price of LCD panels dropped from $143 to $100 in nine months as Chinese makers dumped product into the market.
“Because of Covid-19, LCD panels unexpectedly became a hot item,” said an industry official, who requested anonymity. “But as more people are inoculated and spending time outdoors, TV demand is dropping, and this could result in supply exceeding demand.”
Samsung Display CEO Choi Joo-sun said the company is currently reviewing whether to continued LCD production in an e-mail recently sent to employees in the LCD department.
LG Display, which initially planned to fold its LCD TV panel business by end of 2020, is currently running the production plant but without any additional investment or new equipment being installed.
“Already LCD prices when compared to a year ago have more than doubled,” said an industry insider, who wished to remain anonymous. “With China already completely dominating the market, it is unlikely they would repeat low-cost mass production similar to 2019.”
“It is possible that the LCD panel price could fall between the second half of this year and through the first half of next year as demand falls,” said Kim Hyun-soo, Hana Financial Investment analyst. “But as the likelihood of Chinese companies playing a game of chicken is reduced, the prices will likely stabilize in the second half of next year.”
