The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a 13 megapixel smartphone that runs on the Android operating system. The Galaxy S4 has a 31mm fixed lens with an aperture of f/2.2, a 5-inch Full HD AMOLED touchscreen which boasts a resolution of 441ppi, a built-in LED flash, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G/4G connectivity, and Full 1080p HD movies at 30fps with slow- and fast-motion options. The Samsung Galaxy S4 costs around £499 / $599 without a contract and is available in a wide range of colours.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 measures 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm, which means that it can be easily stored inside a trouser pocket, and weighs a mere 130g without battery and card. It"s undoubtedly a large but very slim device that will definitely get you noticed, especially in the attractive white finish of our review sample. Build quality is fine, but not class-leading, and having to remove the plastic cover off the back to insert a microSD card is more than a little disconcerting!

The Galaxy S4 has a fixed lens with a focal length the 35mm equivalent of 31mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.2. There"s 13-megapixel effective resolution from the standard sized 1/2.33-inch CMOS sensor. On the back is a very impressive 5-inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel Full HD touchscreen AMOLED display, and the S4 zoom runs the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

The plastic back cover aside, with what feels like a higher proportion of metal in the build than plastic, the Galaxy S4"s sleek and stylish exterior certainly looks the part. Other than the lens, the only other features on the sparse front of the Galaxy S4 are two slots for the microphones and the LED flash unit, positioned directly below the lens.

Located on the top-plate is a thin power button. Hold this down for the first time and the Galaxy S4 stutters into life, taking quite a while to display a series of graphical screens, with the rear screen switches to camera mode a couple of seconds later. The startup time from Standby is thankfully much quicker at just under 2 seconds, roughly what we"d expect from a point-and-shoot camera, although no speed demon.

There"s no physical shutter-release button on the Galaxy S4, replaced instead by a soft key on the touchscreen. To focus, simply tap anywhere on the screen and the AF point appears in green along with the customary confirmation "bleep", then tap the shutter button to take the shot. A full-sized 13 megapixel image is committed to either the built-in memory (16/32/64Mb) or an optional micro-SD card in one to two seconds, which is impressive. You can even take a picture using the power of your own voice, with "capture", "shoot", "smile" and "cheese" commands all available. Voice control can also be used to zoom the lens, fire the flash, set the timer options, and change the shooting mode, amongst other settings.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has an array of beginner and more advanced shooting modes. The subject recognizing Auto setting is point and shoot all the way, the camera getting it mostly right, although - typically - busier scenes can confuse the auto-focus and the shutter will still fire even if the image is noticeably soft, so you can occasionally come away with blurred results. There"s also a range of 11 different clever scene modes, including the useful HDR and Panorama modes, and 13 creative filters which are accessed by pressing the arrow icon at the bottom of the touchscreen, useful for previewing and adding a not-too-cliched effect.

Pressing the Home button fires up the Galaxy S4"s default screen, which displays the time and date, allows you to perform a Google Search, includes icons for the Paper Artist, Instagram, Photo Wizard, Video Editor, Camera, and Gallery apps, plus Dropbox, Play Store and a further Apps icon which accesses all the default apps and the Widgets screen.

Having the ability to connect to a wi-fi network or cellular data if using a SIM card, then edit your images and video with either the Samsung apps, Instagram or any one of hundreds of other Android apps, and then upload them to your favourite online network quickly becomes compulsive and makes the traditional process of downloading to a computer seem laborious and old-fashioned.

With the 5-inch screen swallowing up the entire backplate of the Samsung Galaxy S4, apart from the Home button, there are very few other physical controls apart from a headphone port and a volume control button. Note that the battery can be removed, but charging is still done in-camera.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 produced images of good quality during the review period. Noise is the main issue, already becoming obvious at the relatively slow setting of ISO 200, and then getting progressively worse at the still modest settings of ISO 400 and 800.

The built-in flash worked well indoors, with no red-eye and good overall exposure. The anti-shake system works well when hand-holding the Galaxy S4 in low-light conditions, but the maximum shutter speed doesn"t allow the camera to capture enough light for most after-dark situations. The HDR and Panorama modes are the best of the so-called Smart scene modes.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 handled chromatic aberrations very well during the review, with limited purple fringing mainly present around the edges of objects in high-contrast situations, as shown in the example below.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 allows you to focus on a subject that is 10cms away from the camera. The first image shows how close you can get to the subject (in this case a compact flash card). The second image is a 100% crop.

The Samsung Galaxy S4"s doesn"t have a very long maximum shutter speed and you can"t set it manually anyway, which is not great news if you"re seriously interested in night photography.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a digital anti-shake mechanism, which allows you to take sharp photos at slower shutter speeds than other digital cameras. To test this, we took 2 handheld shots of the same subject with the same settings. The first shot was taken with anti shake turned off, the second with it turned on. With anti-shake turned on, the images are noticeably sharper than with anti-shake turned off.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 allows you to take panoramic images very easily, by "sweeping" with the camera while keeping the shutter release depressed. The camera automatically does all the processing and stitching. The main catch is that the resulting image is of fairly low resolution.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the most popular Android smartphones on the market, and its camera is a solid, if unspectacular, performer that"s good enough for most uses that its owners will put it to.

By compact camera standards, the Samsung Galaxy S4"s image quality isn"t that great, suffering from obvious noise at relatively slow ISO speeds, but it is a marked improvement on most smartphones. It is perfectly fine for cropping and resizing for posting on Facebook or Instagram, or for making regular-sized prints. The digital image stabilisation system kind of works by forcing the shutter speed to 1/30th second, but it does so by choosing a higher ISO with an accompanying increase in noise artifacts, so the Samsung Galaxy S4 is best suited to taking photos in good lighting conditions.

So while the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S4 isn"t good enough to choose this smartphone over another rival device, it is more than adequate for daily use, especially in good light where the quality begins to rival a compact camera.

It"s crazy to think that in just a few months the Galaxy S4 has started to look a little long in the tooth, but with so much competition it"s true. While it hasn"t quite been the runaway success Samsung hoped it would be it is still one of the best-selling flagship phones on the market and a worth successor to the mighty Galaxy S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the most hotly anticipated smartphone ever from the Korean brand, and with a glut of top end features, it"s the most powerful and desirable device Samsung has created yet.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the successor to the hugely successful Galaxy S3 and as such the latest model in the Korean manufacturer"s Galaxy S line of flagship smartphones. The Galaxy S3 did well in our review from October 2012 and was one of the first Android-powered smartphones that could establish itself as a valid rival to Apple"s iPhone both in terms of sales figures and consumer appeal.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the most powerful phone we"ve ever tested and its bold, Full HD screen is the best in the business. Its plastic construction is a drawback and some of you might find it complicated to use, but there"s no question that it"s a seriously good phone.

Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone to much pomp and spectacle last night at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Often, such over-the-top theatrics could mask a lack of substance underneath. But that"s not the case with the Galaxy S4. We went hands-on with the S4 at the New York event, and came away impressed with the innovative and well-integrated software and hardware enhancements that will keep Samsung well-ahead of its competition.

The first thing to note about the S4 is that it"s practically identical in footprint and weight to its predecessor, and yet it"s thinner and crams a slightly larger display into that space than on the S3. The S4 measures 13.5 by 7cm (5.38 by 2.74 in), just 1mm (0.04 in) narrower than the S3 - and a notable 11mm (0.43 in) narrower than the Galaxy Note II. The S4 is also very marginally lighter than the S3.

Overall, the phone felt comfortable to handle. Where the Samsung Galaxy Note II is nigh impossible to balance in one hand for typing, not so with the S4. It"s weight and dimensions make it light enough to hold in one hand without any noticeable impact, yet large enough to get a satisfying display of text and photos.

One very noticeable dfference is the larger screen size on the S4. The phone"s Super AMOLED screen measures a comfortable 5.0 inches, a satisfying 0.2-inch bump over the S3. The resolution is better, too: 1920-by-1080 pixels, and 441 pixels per inch, a notable step up over the Galaxy S3"s Super AMOLED 1280-by-720 pixels and 306 ppi. We could see a distinct difference in the image quality between the two: The S4 looked sharper and crisper to our eyes, on text as well as images. But the distinctions were less clear when compared with the larger Galaxy Note II.

Indeed, we saw this when viewing a photo on the new S4 compared with the Note II. We noticed some minor differences in color and sharpness on our own photo. The Note II"s image appeared slightly sharper, but the S4 had more balanced skin tones.

The new Adapt Display function automatically adapts screen contrast and brightness to the content you are viewing. You can also set some options manually.

With the new Adapt display mode enabled, the differences were even more pronounced. This adaptive display setting automatically adjusts the contrast and brightness of the display depending upon the content you"re viewing, optimizing based on whether you"re watching a video, looking at an image, or reading a Web page or book, for example. On the S4, the Adapt display feature is more universally applied than on the Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet. In the Note 8.0"s reading mode that mode is strictly optimized for reading apps and also adjusts for color temperature.

Ultimately, further testing will be necessary under controlled conditions and with the final, shipping S4 to determine how the different settings impact how images look on the display. Among the other display options now available are Dynamic, Standard, Professional Photo (Adobe RGB), and Movie.

Gesture navigation first gained mainstream traction with Microsoft"s Xbox Kinect. Then gestures moved into televisions and then to PCs, for example Sony"s Vaio E-series. Through it all, we"ve heard talk about integrating gestures into smartphones and tablets - and now that becomes a reality in the Galaxy S4.

We tested the gesture navigation in the Gallery app, where we navigated images simply with the forward or backwards swipe of a hand. In practice, we found the sensors a bit too sensitive, requiring precision and proximity to work smoothly. More often than not it felt like there was lag, or our swipe wasn"t registered. Perhaps that will still be tweaked in time for the U.S. launch coming later in April. Ultimately, as nifty as this feature may seem, Samsung"s going to have to offer up some training to walk folks through which apps support gestures, and what those gestures are (for example, you can also swipe in the browser to change among open Web pages, and swipe to answer an incoming call, neither of which we tested).

The Smart Scrollfeature lets you scroll through content such as webpages by tilting the phone slightly into the corresponding direction. We did not get a chance to test feature yet but it seemed to work well in the Samsung demo. Smart Pause, meanwhile, detects if you"ve taken your face away from the screen during playback, and if so, it pauses the action for you. Nifty in its implementation, and its function.

Also new is Air View, a feature that first was announced on this spring"s Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet. There, Air View lets you use the tablet"s S Pen to hover over information in a supported app, gaining a shortcut to paying or getting further information. For example, in Flipboard, you could hold the pen over a category and get a preview of the headlines. On the S4, which also comes with Flipboard, you can now use your finger to do these actions. You can also use your finger to draw directly on the screen using an included app like S Memo, just as you"d use the S Pen on the Note II. For both actions, we found our fingers less precise than using the S Pen on the Galaxy Note 8.0; but, our fingers got the job done without the albatross of a pen.

The S4 phone actually borrows heavily from software elements found in the Note 8.0 tablet, which was only just introduced in February, and will be available in Q2 2013. Multi-window provides a scrollable list of supported apps (apps like email, gallery, Gmail, Internet browser, maps, messaging, S Memo, Talk, and YouTube). Long hold the back button to see the fly-out menu, then tap and drag one app, then the second app. You could technically choose to have three things going at the same time, if you were to overlay the popup player as well.

Entirely unique to the S4 phone are the array of features around health and fitness. We liked how the apps for these features were integrated, taking advantage of the new ensors built-into the phone - including ones for temperature and humidity.

Besides obvious features like a touchscreen and biometric sensors, the modern smartphone comes with an array of state-of-the-art hardware in the form of various sensors that help your device sense the environment around it. And if you have a Samsung handset, chances are, you have a handy feature built in that enables you to check if these sensors are functioning 100 percent.

Unbeknownst to a lot of Samsung fans, most Galaxy phones have a secret diagnostic mode built in which can be accessed simply by inputting a little-known code. Best of all, this feature is extremely easy to access and is a handy way of testing out a new or used phone to ensure it"s in perfect running order before you commit to buying it.

Before we begin, it"s important to note that this feature may not be available on your device. Certain carriers, most notably Verizon and Sprint, have been known to block the code-based diagnostic mode on their Samsung smartphones and tablets, though newer phones from Sprint like the Galaxy S6 seem to have this functionality restored.

Below are the following tests you can perform on your Samsung handset once you"ve input the code and entered HwModuleTest mode. Please note that some may be missing screenshots due to security reasons or the nature of the tests.

To check if your phone"s receiver is working properly, tap on the "Receiver" button to commence testing. Doing so should take you to a white screen, accompanied by a clearly audible dial tone. Once you"re satisfied, simply tap on the back button twice to go back to the main test page.

"Vibration" tests out your phone"s vibration motor. Your screen will go black once you tap on the "Vibration" button, accompanied by a constant vibration. Tap on the screen once to exit this test and go back to the main test screen.

The LED test checks for the functionality of your device"s LED notification light. Running the test is straightforward — simply tap on the "LED" button, then tap on the screen to change the LED"s color from red, to green, and finally to blue. Tap on the screen one last time to end the test and go back to the main diagnostics page.

The Hall IC sensor detects magnetic fields and is primarily used to detect magnetic flip covers to automatically put the phone to sleep when a magnet within the flip cover touches the phone. The test itself doesn"t do much and simply gives a confirmation that the Hall IC functions properly.
