Chemicals leaking from millions of computer screens in homes, offices and schools could damage human health, according to research by Chinese scientists.

Chemistry professor Su Guanyong and colleagues at Nanjing University of Science and Technology in eastern Jiangsu province studied more than 360 types of chemicals used in computer and mobile phone screens and found that 87 of them could be a danger if they got into the environment.

Some chemicals in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) could alter genes, they said. Animal cells mutated unexpectedly if exposed, and preliminary results of their ongoing study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday showed that one of the most polluted places was the home.

Researchers said about a quarter of the chemicals from screens they tested might be pollutants. Photo: Getty alt=Researchers said about a quarter of the chemicals from screens they tested might be pollutants. Photo: Getty

Studies found that excessive radiation from screens could speed up the ageing of skin and blue light from diodes could harm the retina of the eye. "But nobody has looked beyond the brightness to unveil the dark secrets behind," Su said.

Over the years, screen panel manufacturers have pushed LCD technology to higher resolutions and faster refreshing rates, but the chemical composition of the liquid crystal that fills their screens has hardly changed.

They exposed embryonic chicken cells to liquid crystal taken from the screens and compared them to cells grown in normal conditions. They found genetic changes that suggested the exposed cells had mutated.

The Nanjing team was baffled by the amount of liquid crystal in the air. They knew screens were made in dust-free factories and sealed, but their surveys of hotels, school buildings, canteens, dormitories, electronic product repair centres, homes and laboratories revealed surprising results.

Scientists say cracked screens and leaking chemicals are a worldwide problem. Photo: Shutterstock alt=Scientists say cracked screens and leaking chemicals are a worldwide problem. Photo: Shutterstock

The lowest levels were found in a canteen, a dormitory and classrooms. Su said they were not sure where the drifting liquid crystals came from. Some screens might have been cracked or broken, he said. If a screen was left on for a long time, heat and radiation might cause liquid crystal to evaporate.

There was no solution to the problem at this stage, the researchers said. To push the government for more strict regulations meant that the scientific community had to come up with more evidence and a better understanding of the problem.

"Electric device recycling plants could be a major source of emissions, with broken screens dumped everywhere and little protection. This practice must stop," he said.

Ever had your TV showing nothing but a black screen even if the audio was working? Unfortunately, that’s a common issue with low/middle-end LCD/LED TVs these days… Even more frustrating, this issue often comes from a rather tiny and cheap component that can be easily replaced. Most common issues are:

One of my relatives had this exact symptom happening all of a sudden. This problem on low-end TVs often occurs within the first couple years. As the repair costs for that kind of TV is pretty low, considering repairing it yourself might be a good idea!

The first step into repair is to find the root cause of the issue. As backlight failure is a very common issue, this is the first thing to test. To do so, the easiest way is to power on your screen, put a flashlight very close to it and check if you can see the image through. The image would be very dark, like turning the brightness of the screen very very low.

That implies disassembling the TV to access the backlight which is between the LCD screen in the front and the boards in the rear. In my case, with a Samsung F5000, I had to process as follows:

First we have to remove the back housing to reveal the boards (from left to right: main board, T-CON, power supply) and disconnect the LCD panel from the T-CON board.

Note: Older TVs have neon tubes for backlight, which is thicker and less exposed to this kind of failure. LED backlight is the most common thing these days, but do not mistake an LED TV with an OLED TV. The first one is a classic LCD panel with a LED backlight, whereas the second is an OLED panel that doesn’t need any backlight as it is integrated in each pixels (making the spare parts much more expensive by the way).

As we can see, the backlight system is made of 5 LED strips. First thing to do is look for burnt LEDs. Most LED backlight systems have strips set in series, meaning that if one of the them fails, all the system goes dark…

For starters I’ll go with the third one, just to make sure there is no other issues with the TV, but afterwards it’s better to replace the LED with a new one, otherwise you might notice a darker spot on the image.

There might be a lot of other root causes for similar symptoms, a black screen often looks like something very serious and therefore expensive to repair, but this case is the perfect example that taking some time to look for the root cause can sometime lead to a good surprise: here a 1$ fix!

We have a lot of different supplyers. The latest batch of iphone 4s LCD"s all have this problem. Iphone5/5s/6(+)/6s(+) are all fine. We are now testing all the LCD"s out of the batch. All have the dark lines. It looks fine at first. But when you get a pop-up or get the shutdown screen, that is when you see the dark lines.

We repair in an ESD space, having ESD wristbands and heelbands. We are testing the lcd"s using a disassembled iphone. So this issue (we have here) has nothing to do with the metal plate.

One of the people here said something about static getting in the screen when they get referbrished. But is there any way to get this charge out? Someone told us to put the connectors on the table so it could discharge. But this does exactly nothing. Does anyone have a solution?

And what i found is; White lines mean it"s not properly connected or the flex is damaged. This is a different problem then the dark lines i was talking about. Stripes (more then 3) are also a result of a bad connection.

Hi. It´s very good instruction. I could repair my multimeter YF-3503 Yufong. Thank U a lot of. My problem was exactly like in this video, Images of then.

Great fix - I was just about to bin my meter when I googled this. Followed the instructions, used UHU glue instead of a glue gun, now the display is perfect - many thanks! Pity I didn"t take a before pic but there was a big black oval covering most of the screen.

I used to have the same issue with noise from the power supply getting onto the screen and even sometimes resetting my printer mid-print. I found that if I had my USB programming cable plugged in I never experienced the issue. I found that the issue was the noise from the power supply wasn"t not being drained to earth ground, and it was actually tripping the reset on the micro-controller. Part of that comes from the micro-controller and screen having to share their power, which is regulated down to 5v from the incoming 12v. The trick is to supply the micro controller with its own 5v while printing and drain the incoming noise off to earth ground. I modified the typical USB A-B cable to resolve this. As long as you still use the SD card to load the gcode you can occupy the programming port with this cable to supply the 5v.

We must verify whether the problem is the display screen of the laptop, video card (GPU), or video settings on the computer. A straightforward way to identify this is to connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV.

If the issue persists on the external monitor, it may be an issue with the video card (GPU) or video settings and not the laptop LCD panel. Go to verify display or video issues in Windows Safe Mode. Otherwise, go to the next step.

Performance issues may occur if there is any damage to the LCD screen. The display may stop working, work intermittently, flicker, display horizontal or vertical lines, and so on, if there is damage to the display screen.

Dell laptops have integrated diagnostic tools that can determine if the screen abnormality is an inherent problem with the LCD screen of the Dell laptop or with the video card (GPU) and computer settings.

When you notice screen abnormalities like flickering, distortion, clarity issues, fuzzy or blurry images, horizontal or vertical lines, color fade, running a diagnostic test on the LCD helps identify if the issue is with the LCD panel.

Press and hold the D key and turn on the computer to enter the LCD built-in self-test (BIST) mode. Continue to hold the D key until you see the entire screen change colors.

If you do not detect any screen abnormalities in the integrated self-test mode, the LCD panel of the laptop is functioning properly. Go to the Update the video card (GPU) driver, monitor driver, and BIOS section.

If you notice any abnormalities in the LCD built-in self-test mode, contact Dell Technical Support to learn more about repair options that are available in your region.

Windows updates can support your Windows operating system in many ways. Windows updates can solve specific problems, provide security patches and protection from malicious attacks, or even add new features to the operating system.

Display settings like brightness, refresh rate, resolution, and power management may affect the performance of the LCD screen on your Dell laptop. Changing or adjusting the display settings can help resolve several types of video issues.

Stress Test can thoroughly diagnose the video card (GPU) on your computer and report any potential hardware problem. Running a stress test on your computer can verify if the hardware components are stable and thus reliable.

If the diagnostic tests on the LCD panel and the video card (GPU) passed, it is most definitely an issue that is related to software that is installed on the computer. If the above troubleshooting steps did not resolve the issue, you may try to restore the computer to factory default settings as a last resort.

Watching your mobile screen with those white or black vertical/horizontal lines is annoying. In short, it’s tough to use a phone with these lines appearing on the screen. Typically, this issue is associated with the LCD, caused by a faulty hardware component in your device due to some accidental fall or water damage. Phones with such damages can only be fixed at a phone repair center.

If there’re white lines on the screen, this solution may prove effective. A battery cycle is when you charge a mobile to 100% and let it drain to 0% again. Usually, the lines will disappear soon as you charge the battery fully.

If the horizontal or vertical lines still appear on your phone screen after trying all the above methods, you better take your device to a reliable mobile repair store near you. Most likely, it’s a faulty hardware component that needs to be repaired or replaced. Here, we would suggest you opt for only an authorized service center, as this will ensure flawless repair at a reasonable cost. Besides, if any of the components have to be replaced, they will be genuine and as per your specific requirements.

UPDATE: What I thought was a pre-installed screen protector, is actually just the actual glass, it"s just such a low quality replacement, the glass sticks up over the edge of the phone. It has already cracked. Even before it cracked, it"s such bad quality there was lots of light bleeding through the edge of the screen. As if that wasn"t bad enough, my original review mentioned the brightness being poor. The brightness is so bad, it literally cuts the battery life of your phone by 25-30%, bc this screen has to suck so much power to barely be visible. After installing this, say goodbye to enabling auto brightness... with it turned on, it always sets the brightness so low the phone is impossible to use. Direct sunlight, forget about it. I"ve used a lot of screen replacements, and this is the worst.

This screen is good enough to give my phone another lease on life, but it is far inferior to the original phone screen. I could tell as soon as I turned it on that it was less bright and the colors were less vivid. Where the difference is really evident is under direct sunlight. The original screen at max brightness was still very visible in direct sunlight. This screen is incredibly dim even at max brightness in these conditions.

For positives, it comes w a nice screen protector already perfectly installed. It came w all necessary tools. It DID NOT come with electronics repair double sided tape, or electronics adhesive, which you will need to order separately.

AMOLED burn-in on screens and displays is permanent. Fortunately, you can slow it down and reduce its visibility by using a few simple tricks, which can also increase battery life.

Everyone with an OLED display has some burn-in. But often, it"s not fully visible unless you display a solid color at maximum brightness. The Android operating system has access to many apps that detect burn-in damage. The best of these is Screen Test.

Screen Test is ultra-simple: install and run the app. Touching the screen shifts between colors and patterns. If you see a persistent image impression or blotchy coloration, you have burn-in.

For my AMOLED phone, I"ve taken every precaution against screen burn-in. Even so, the display is still a little blotchy after over a year of use. Fortunately, there are no indications of burn-in where the navigation buttons are.

Android 10"s dark mode finally allows for Android system menus and apps to appear dark in color. It will turn Chrome"s user interface black, as well as the Settings menu, navigation bar, and notifications shade.

Android made it possible to get rid of the navigation bar in Android 10. Once enabled, gestures allow navigation by swiping your finger on the screen. You can enable Gesture mode by doing the following:

Some might notice that the stock wallpapers in Android aren"t usually suited for OLED screens. OLED screens consume very little energy when displaying the color black, and they do not burn-in when displaying black. Unfortunately, older Android versions don"t include a solid black wallpaper option.

If you don"t have Android 10 or newer, the default Android Launcher isn"t OLED friendly. In Android 5.0, it forces the App Drawer wallpaper to white (the worst color for OLED screens). One of the best launchers for darker colors is Nova Launcher. Not only is it more responsive, it offers better customization options.

Minma Icon Pack changes your bright, screen-damaging icons into a darker, OLED-friendly palette. Over 300 icons are available, which cover the default icons as well as many others.

Firefox Mobile is infinitely customizable. While they, unfortunately, removed many of their browser"s mobile add-ons, you can still turn entire webpages black. And, on top of that, Firefox includes a dark theme.

I recommend installing an add-on. The easiest-to-use add-on is Dark Reader. Dark Reader does more than just change the color of Firefox"s user interface; Dark Reader can change webpages" to black backgrounds with red text, reducing eye strain and burn-in while also improving battery life.

Android"s dark-themed virtual keyboard options can reduce burn-in (and improve battery life). The best of these is SwiftKey, which allows users to change the color of their keyboards. The best SwiftKey theme I"ve seen so far is the Pumpkin theme. If you turn on Android"s dark theme, it automatically turns the keyboard black. In this case, you can simply use the default keyboard.

There are a few other burn-in repair tools, but I don"t recommend them since they either require root access and/or can increase screen damage. However, for reference, you can read about them below and why using them is a bad idea. They fall into two categories:

I do not recommend using this option unless your screen is already trashed. It will cause additional damage but may reduce the appearance of already existing on-screen burn. Inverting colors simply reverses the colors displayed on your screen. Whites become blacks and vice-versa.

Several tools claim to reduce the appearance of burn-in by attempting to age the entirety of your OLED panel. These screen burn-in tools flash red, green, and blue (or other) colors on your screen.

None of these methods will stop the inevitable and slow destruction of your device"s screen. However, using all the recommended options in this article will dramatically decrease the rate at which it decays. That said, some of the oldest AMOLED phones have very little burn-in. The decay of organic LEDs is almost entirely aesthetic, particularly on newer phones.

There are situation when a mobile cell phone of any brand including Samsung, Nokia, LG, iPhone, Micromax, China Mobile Phones etc may give problems such as No LCD Indication or Blank LCD.

If the problem is not solved then you may have to replace the LCD. The LCD may be damaged. Remember, the LCD screen of modern phones, especially cheaper phones get damaged too quickly and very easily.
