As part of the largest refresh in Volvo history, the S60 receives significant changes for 2014 including dramatic new front styling that accelerates its sporty character, interior upgrades that make it even more rewarding and comfortable to drive, newly available leading-edge safety technologies and a wide spectrum of equipment enhancements that make it an even stronger value.

The front of the S60 has been redesigned sporting all-new exterior panels from the A-pillars forward including a new hood, front fenders and fascia. A wider grille with a larger Ironmark is flanked by new headlights while a larger, wider lower front intake gains bright accents and horizontally mounted LED daytime running lights. At the rear, new LED light guides on the taillights and new integrated exhaust pipes contribute to the more powerful road presence and self-confident stance.

Scandinavian design is exemplified by beautiful, simple shapes and surfaces with any unnecessary clutter removed. This is evident in the redesigned exterior and interior of the S60. Inside, the attention to detail, the authentic materials, such as wood and leather, and the easy to use controls contributes to the in-command driving experience.

In keeping with its character as the sportiest and most dynamic Volvo ever, the S60 is the first Volvo carline to receive paddle shifters. Standard on T6 AWD and R-Design models and available on T5, paddle shifters let the driver shift manually with both hands on the steering wheel. All models also receive a new shift knob for the floor shifter with piano black background and illuminated symbols for increased visibility in low light.

New Advanced Quick Shift is designed to increase the S60"s performance potential. When Sport Mode is selected or when using paddle shifters on T6 AWD and R-Design, new software mapping improves gear change speed by 20-30 percent on third to sixth gears and up to 50 percent faster from first to second gear. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph drops by 0.2 seconds to 5.5 seconds for T6 AWD and 5.3 seconds for T6 R-Design.

All-new instrument clusters help the driver stay informed of the S60"s dynamic capabilities. The base T5 receives a contemporary analog cluster. A new adaptive digital display is standard on T5 Premier, Premier Plus and Platinum trim levels plus all T6 AWD and R-Design models. The easy-to-read Thin Film Transistor (TFT) design allows drivers to select from three different themes:

Performance has red background illumination for a more dynamic look. A tachometer replaces the speedometer while vehicle speed is shown digitally. The right display includes a power meter gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much is being used at any given moment.

Volvo"s long-standing tradition for providing supportive and comfortable seats to help reduce fatigue on long drives continues for 2014 with new design sport seats, standard on T6 AWD and available on T5 with the optional Sport Package. As the perfect addition to the in-command feel of a true driver"s car, these seats provide added side support from the thighs to the shoulders to help keep the driver firmly in position in quick corners.

Detail changes that enhance the S60"s cabin ambience include new cloth-covered B-pillars, metal trim around air vents, a silver décor frame for the headlight module, a Quartz headliner, white illumination in buttons replacing green and new front door sill plates.

New standard features for the S60 T5 base model include 17-inch Pandora alloy wheels. The Premier trim level gains 17-inch Sadia alloys, bright side window trim and adaptive digital TFT display. Premier Plus receives a rear park assist camera, grocery bag holder in the trunk and a quick-fold front passenger seat. Power-retracting, auto-dimming outside mirrors and cabin accent lighting are now included on the Platinum trim. A new optional 18-inch Sport Package for T5 features sport seats, paddle shifters, 18-inch Titania alloy wheels and Dynamic Chassis.

The S60 T5"s standard 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine delivers an excellent balance of performance and economy with 250 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque. Volvo"s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction is optional. Providing the best possible grip in all situations - on wet, slippery or completely dry roads - All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction can be added to any S60 T5 as a stand-alone $2,000 option.

All S60s can be enhanced with high-tech features via the Platinum trim level. This includes the Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby® Pro Logic® II Surround Sound, 12 premium speakers and 650 watts. Also included is a Navigation System with Real Time Traffic and Map Care plus a rear park assist camera.

Customers have the flexibility to add option packages to any S60, as well as select individual items from a list of stand-alone options. New individual options include heated front seats, an accessory prep cable, active dual xenon headlights (standard on R-Design) and 19-inch Bor diamond-cut alloy wheels including a lowered Sport Chassis for the T6 AWD.

Newly available on all S60s is the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) Package. This package includes BLIS, front and rear park assist, and new Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) and Lane Change Merge Aid (LCMA). The system is based on radar technology installed behind the rear wheels and will detect traffic from a longer distance than the previous BLIS system. This advanced technology has a much larger detection area proving the capability of informing the driver of rapidly approaching vehicles. LCMA utilizes two levels of LED lights mounted in the A-pillar. While CTA uses radar sensors in the rear bumper to monitor traffic when backing out of a parking space, warning the driver of approaching traffic via a visual alert and audio signal.

The Technology Package is available on the S60. Among its features, Cyclist Detection has been added to Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake. Active High Beam automatically switches the headlights to low beam when opposite traffic is detected. Road Sign Information (RSI) displays traffic speed signs for the driver on the instrument cluster based on the Forward Looking Camera (FLC). The package also includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Queue Assist, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake (CWAB), Distance Alert (DA), Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Enthusiasts recognize the T6 R-Design as the ultimate performance S60. With the most powerful six-cylinder currently offered by Volvo, the R-Design"s 3.0-liter turbocharged engine puts out a remarkable 325 horsepower and a stout 354 lb.-ft. of torque. Compared to the T6 AWD, the R-Design"s engine generates 25 more horsepower and 29 lb.-ft. additional torque. Like the S60 T6 AWD, the R-Design is fitted with standard All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction plus Corner Traction Control with torque vectoring. The S60 T6 AWD continues to be equipped with the same 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine employed in the R-Design. Performance-minded drivers will enjoy the T6 AWD"s 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque with maximum torque achieved from 2,100 rpm and available throughout the rev range. R-Design"s standard Sport Chassis continues to take it to the next level of performance. Volvo"s chassis team fitted a strut brace under the hood that links the suspension strut towers. This is a classic method of stiffening up the body structure and to improve steering response. At the rear, the R-Design features monotube dampers. Unlike the twin-tube dampers used in the S60 T6 AWD, the monotube system features compression and return damping via the same valve. This gives shorter, faster fluid flow, which in turn means the damper responds more quickly. The R-Design"s front springs are shortened by 15mm to give it more visual attitude. Spring stiffness is 15 percent higher compared to the Dynamic Chassis in the T6 AWD. Rear damper attachment bushings are 20 percent stiffer compared with the T6 AWD. The front tie-blade bushing, or the attachment to the rear of the car, is a massive 400 percent stiffer to counteract wheel bouncing and shaking. On the outside, the S60 R-Design"s sporty stance is enhanced with color-matched body components, details in matte finish and a hexagonal pattern that is repeated both front and rear. Incorporated within a sporty rear exhaust baffle are distinctive 3 1/2-inch twin exhaust pipes. Unique R-Design 18-inch Ixion alloy wheels emphasize the sporty appeal. Larger 19-inch Ixion II alloys with performance summer tires are optional. Inside the R-Design, the driver and front passenger sit in sport seats in which the highly supportive backrest is matched with a unique seat cushion with deeper side bolsters. The exclusive standard upholstery is Off-Black leather with contrasting stitching and sport-oriented texture accents with embossed R-Design logo across the front-seat backrests. The interior also features an R-Design sport steering wheel, gear selector, sport pedals, floor mats and adaptive digital display with R-Design graphics.

Driving dynamics have been fine-tuned for the S60 T5 and T6 AWD. The Dynamic Chassis, standard on the T6 AWD, places the focus on optimizing control and agility. The T5 comes with a Touring Chassis that delivers an exciting ride with a priority on comfort. The major difference between the two is in the dampers and the front and rear subframes. Both offer exceptional ride and handling qualities, yet the Touring Chassis has been tuned to provide a smoother ride on poor road surfaces. All S60s are equipped with Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) as part of a suite of electronic systems to help optimize handling and control. Advanced Stability Control uses a roll angle sensor to detect and react to oversteer and understeer at an earlier stage. These situations may occur if the driver suddenly releases the accelerator while steering, such as when leaving a highway slightly too late. It also improves handling in evasive maneuvers. DSTC includes a sport mode setting to allow controlled wheel slip for performance driving. Corner Traction Control by Torque Vectoring is another technology to help improve handling by redistributing torque to the outer wheel to help "steer" the car around a turn. This feature operates on the front wheels for the S60 T5 and both the front and rear wheels for the S60 T6 AWD and R-Design plus the T5 when equipped with optional AWD. Enthusiast drivers will immediately notice a significant reduction in understeer as the system seamlessly applies the appropriate amount of power to the outside tire(s).

The S60 represents the latest chapter in Volvo"s pioneering and industry leading safety systems. Among its accolades, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recognized S60 with its newest and highest rating for 2013, the Top Safety Pick+ award. IIHS created this award to recognize good or acceptable performance in the new small overlap collision test. The S60 received the top good rating for this test.

In addition, the S60 received the highest possible 5-Star Overall safety rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash testing. As part of NHTSA"s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the Overall rating combines individual 5-Star ratings for separate frontal, side impact and rollover tests.

The S60"s standard safety systems include City Safety, a world-first technology that made its debut on the Volvo XC60. City Safety is a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions with a vehicle ahead occurring at speeds of 31 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the S60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact.

All S60s are fitted with the Volvo Sensus system. Sensus manages information from the audio unit, navigation system (if equipped) and other functions, displaying them onto a seven-inch high-definition color monitor in the upper part of the center console. It allows the driver to explore the high-tech features of the car and personalize them to suit his or her needs.

The S60 is one of few cars in the world to use Audyssey Laboratories" MultiEQ technology, the standard for room equalization in the home and professional theater markets, like IMAX. Included with the Premium Sound System, MultiEQ removes distortion caused by the cabin"s acoustics enabling crisp, clear sound with improved soundstage effects for everyone in the car.

The first generation (2000–2009)S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a sports version called S60 R.ECC concept car and the S80.

The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year.Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America"s first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina.

The Volvo S60 was released in 2000 (2001 model year) being the company"s new generation sports sedan. The S60 is aimed to mainly compete in Europe with the BMW 3 Series (E46), the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W203) and the Alfa Romeo 156. Unlike its rivals, the Volvo S60 continued production for 9 years with multiple facelifts. When it was introduced the appearance was unlike the squared vehicles offered in previous years, and continued the new design tradition introduced by the larger S80, utilizing a cab forward approach and was more organic appearing with a pronounced shelf along the beltline that ran the length of the vehicle, achieving a Cd=0.28 drag coefficient.crumple zones, driver and front passenger dual threshold airbags with a collapsible three-stage steering column, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) supplemented with air bags for driver and front passenger, along with a side curtain airbag for front and rear passengers, anti-submarine seats, five padded head restraints with Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), and automatic seat belt pretensioners while front belts also have height adjustment.

In 2004 PremAir was applied to the exterior radiator surface which converts up to 75 percent of ground level ozone in the radiator cooling air into oxygen, while the Interior Air Quality System cleans the air inside, detects for pollutants and automatically recirculates in comparison to the air outside.taupe, light sand or graphite with indigo inserts and the leathers were tanned using natural plant materials. The S60 sheet metal content can be recycled, along with other metals that achieved an 85 overall percentage.

The S60 came standard with Volvo"s own radio unit, the HU-613, the HU-803 and was later upgraded to the HU-650 and an optional extra HU-850 unit. The HU-850 unit features a 225 or 335-watt power output (depending on optional external amplifier) with three presets: 2CH, 3CH and Dolby Digital Pro Logic II Surround Sound. The Four-C chassis from the S60 R became an option on some S60s.

The S60 was refreshed in 2005. The exterior was updated with body-colored side moldings and bumpers with chrome linings, as well as new headlamps replacing the original with black housing, with optional HID headlights. The interior received some updates as well, with new seats, trim, and an updated center console. The S60 went through a final facelift in 2008 with full body-colored bumper and door inserts and larger emblem in the front and larger spaced out "V-O-L-V-O" letters in the rear. The interior featured a new pattern upholstery which differs from its original pattern.

Police specification models came about through Volvo"s extensive work alongside the users of the vehicles and Police Fleet Management departments. As a result, the Police specification vehicles have a striking difference from original showroom model that sometimes the Volvo S60 is used as police cars.

First introduced in 2004, Volvo"s S60 R used a Haldex computer controlled all-wheel-drive system mated to a 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) / 400 N⋅m (300 lbf⋅ft) inline-5 which sends 95 percent of the torque to the front wheels under normal driving conditions and can send up to 70 percent to the rear wheels as necessary.manual transmission, or an available 5-speed automatic which allowed only 258 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m) torque in 1st and 2nd gears. The 2006–2007 models came with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission (which was no longer torque-restricted).

Other aspects which set the R apart from standard S60s were the large Brembo front and rear four-piston brakes, 18-inch 5-spoke "Pegasus" wheels (available as an upgrade to the standard 17-inch wheels of the same design), blue faced "R" gauges, standard HID headlights, as well as the Four-C suspension system.

Semi-active suspension with Four-C (a short name for "Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept") allows the user to select from three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. "Comfort" attempts to soften the car over bumps, while "Advanced" firms the suspension considerably and gives more aggressive throttle response - a setting Volvo implies is for use on the race track. This is accomplished through a drive by wire throttle, allowing the same pedal travel to result in different performance when the appropriate mode is selected,Ohlins Racing AB and shock absorber manufacturer Monroe for the self-adjusting shock absorbers.

The small trunk lid spoiler that was standard on the S60 R created a 20% increased downforce at the rear wheels at high speeds compared to the standard S60s. The S60 Rs have a 0.29 Drag coefficient, compared to the standard S60"s 0.28, due to the larger lower front bumper spoiler to support the secondary intercooler.

Another Volvo factory option for only the S60 R was a body kit which included front bumper splitters, side skirts and a rear valance, color matched to the body. The body kit was only available with certain body colors and in certain markets.

The second generation S60 began production in Ghent, Belgium on May 17, 2010, with an expected annual production of 90,000 vehicles.Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.Haldex AWD system. More differences in the second generation S60 include the new large Volvo iron symbol, parallel to the grille LED day running lamps and larger spaced letters in the brand name on rear.

The engine range of the S60 and V60 comprises four petrol engines and three diesels. The engines available are the T3, T4, T5 and T6 petrol engines and D3, D5 and 1.6D DRIVe diesel engines, the latter of which has Stop Start Technology to increase the efficiency of the engine. The 2.4-litre D5 plug-in hybrid version, fitted with a five-cylinder diesel engine and a 50 kW electric motor, was scheduled for sale in Europe by November 2012.

The Volvo S60 and V60 come with Volvo"s City Safety system as standard, which is the same system fitted to its sister the XC60. This system stops the car in the event of impending collision in "City Traffic" below 19 mph (31 km/h). Also, a new safety feature named "Pedestrian Detection" (available on both the V60 and S60) detects people in front of the car and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not react in time. The new sedan shows off Volvo"s completely new design language already seen in the Volvo XC60 concept. It rides on the same platform as the XC60. The goal of this new design was to target younger demographics.

In 2013, the T5 engine was revamped before the launch of the Drive-E arrival. Among the tweaks to the T5 power plant is a boost in engine compression to 9.5:1 from 9.0, engine torque peaks at 4200 rpm and engine management changes provide faster gear changes and upshifts when the 6-speed automatic gearbox is in the sport mode. Output remains the same over 2012 at 250 bhp (186 kW; 253 PS) and 266 lb⋅ft (361 N⋅m) of torque, although there is a provision for overboost from the turbo which bumps the torque number to 295 lb⋅ft (400 N⋅m). The changes in compression ratio helps the S60 T5 deliver 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) extra in the city and combined cycle. Front-drive versions are rated at 21 mpg‑US (8.9 km/L) city/30 mpg‑US (13 km/L) highway for a combined of 24 mpg‑US (10 km/L), while the AWD model is 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) less across the board. Volvo also says the T5 AWD is good for a 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) sprint of 6.6 seconds, while the front-drive version is 0.2 seconds quicker.

Changes include all-new exterior panels from the A-pillars forward including a new hood, front fenders and fascia; a wider grille with a larger Ironmark is flanked by new headlights while a larger, wider lower front intake gains bright accents and horizontally mounted LED daytime running lights; new integrated exhaust pipes at rear, a new Adaptive Digital TFT Display instrument cluster for select models (R-Design versions include unique blue instrument dials), new paddle shifters on T6 AWD and R-Design models (optional on T5), Advanced Quick Shift (AQS) option on all T6 engines and activated when the transmission is set to sport mode or when using paddle shifters, IntelliSafe with Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake and Cross Traffic Alert became part of the Technology Package, a new radar-based Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) to monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles behind the car while still informing the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides of the car, Cross Traffic Alert with radar sensors at the rear end of the car to alert the driver to crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space.

Thed Björk won three consecutive titles from 2013 to 2015, and Rikard Göransson won the championship in 2016, driving an S60 prepared by Polestar Racing.

From 2002 to 2007 there was an S60 one-make racing series as a support series to the Swedish Touring Car Championship known as the S60 Challenge Cup, using 26 factory-modified S60s.

The first generation S60 made its competitive debut in 2006, racing in the Speed World Challenge GT class. The second-generation model was introduced for the 2009 season. In 2010, its programme was expanded to include the SCAA Pro Racing World Challenge, where it won both the drivers" championship, for factory driver Randy Pobst, his fourth, and manufacturers" championships in the GT class. The programme was expanded again in 2011 to include the Pirelli World Challenge.

Volvo competed in the V8 Supercars Championship with two rear wheel drive V8 B8444S powered S60s between 2014 and 2016 with Garry Rogers Motorsport highlighted by a debut 2nd place at the Adelaide 500, a last second overtake to steal a race win at the Phillip Island Circuit, and third for Scott McLaughlin in the 2016 series driver standings.

Business models include an upgrade to Sensus connect with a 7-inch colour display, internet browser and access to web apps, plus sat-nav and HDD music storage – but you can buy the package as an option on other models. There’s an optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon version too, with DVD player, surround sound and 650 Watts.

While the cabin of the Volvo S60 is a pleasant place to be thanks to its comfortable seats and airy driving environment, some of the switchgear on the dash is confusingly laid out.

Some drivers will find it tricky to find a natural driving position in the S60 too as, bizarrely, the seat tilts when it raises and lowers. The centre armrest also obstructs gearchanges, which is annoying and seems ill-considered.

Sadly, despite its pleasant atmosphere, the Volvo S60 isn"t the most practical car in the compact executive class - passengers in the back get slightly less space than in an Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series, and headroom could be a problem for taller passengers.

For the 2015 model year the S60 has been refreshed with a new front fascia and grille, new hood and fenders, new headlights, and new integrated exhaust pipes at the back. Interior changes include a new adaptive TFT instrument display in some models, new paddle shifters in the T6 AWD and R-Design models (also available optionally on the T5), upgraded transmission programming with Advanced Quick Shift in Sport mode, and a bevy of new available technology features including pedestrian and cyclist detection with full auto braking.

Photo: Simon Hill, Canadian Auto Pressbefore but perhaps a little staid, with a wide expanse of grille dominated by a large Volvo "Ironmark" logo. The underlying structure remains as rock solid as ever, and in combination with all the available safety technology this earns the S60 a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

On the road the T6 AWD offers a real Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde difference when you slip the transmission from Drive to Sport mode. It goes from being a relaxed (if perhaps very slightly firmly sprung) family car into a speed demon performance machine. If you think Swedes are all sensible and dull, try popping the S60 T6 AWD into Sport mode and mashing the throttle (either that or check out some YouTube video of amateur Swedish rally racing!). At full trot, the T6 AWD will charge to 100 km/h in about 5.8 seconds, which is plenty fast.

Inside, the S60 has a chic, minimalist Scandinavian style and some of the most sublimely comfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. They really are incredibly comfortable and supportive, certainly for my 5-foot-11 frame, and frankly I could buy this car for the seats alone. The back seats are also comfortable and spacious enough to keep my tall teenagers happy, and are 60/40 split folding for cargo carrying versatility. With the seats up, trunk space is a reasonable 339 litres.

Photo: Simon Hill, Canadian Auto Pressinterior materials are all up to par, with soft touch door uppers (and lowers too!), cloth-wrapped A-pillars, and a soft-surface dash (although I found this a little rubbery looking). Nice woodgrain trim and metallic accents round things out, and the new alloy shift paddles are a particularly nice touch with their elegantly punched-out + and – symbols. As an aside – and this is an often-underrated attribute – I found that the S60 smells great inside, all leather and cloth with no harsh plastic odors.

All in all, the Volvo S60 T6 AWD adds up to a very appealing machine: a brisk performer with good handling, comfortable Scandinavian style, excellent safety ratings, and abundant available technology. And while it may not convey the some instant status as similarly priced models from BMW, Audi or Mercedes, for some drivers that itself is a large part of the appeal.

Most car makers have a distinct design style for their interiors. Jaguar and BMW, for instance, make their cabins incredibly driver-focused to complement their more sporty characteristics, whereas Mercedes-Benz models nowadays are amongst the most elegant you"ll find in this class. It"s no surprise, then, that the Volvo S60 also has its own bespoke cabin layout that focuses on stereotypical Swedish minimalism. Some may argue that it"s a little bit plain (especially in the more monochrome colour options), but it is a refreshing change from some of the piano black gloss materials and polished wood veneer you find on other cars in this class. Plus, the S60"s cabin has some neat little quirks – the center console panel, for instance, "floats" in front of the lower dashboard. It"s also nicely built and feels solidly put together, which should alleviate any concerns that it"ll start squeaking and rattling once the car"s racked up several tens of thousands of miles on the clock. The only bit that really puts the Volvo S60 on the back foot in comparison with its more modern rivals is the ergonomics of the main controls, which isn"t quite to the standards you"d expect in this class. Yes, the ventilation controls are simple enough to operate, but the cluster of small buttons on the center console aren"t that easy to use intuitively on the move (though, in its defence, a lot of those features can also be toggled through the multi-function steering wheel). Likewise, the multimedia interface is also an okay system, but it"s incredibly clunky in comparison with, say, BMW"s iDrive or even Cadillac"s CUE touchscreen system.
