First, I would like to mention that both an LED TV and a LCD TV are actually LCD TVs except that first one has LED stripes and the latter one has CCFL Backlights- (Florescent Tubes).

Symptom-The red “power” indicator turns on normally but when I try to switch the TV on I hear a click, the red power indicator turns blue as usual but the screen remains dark and no sound

Repair–Stuck “Tact Switch” on TV volume down– You can either press volume down switch 20 times with TV off–(Oxidization), or replace Button Key Board or if you can, disconnect Button Key Board from Main Board–

Repair- Suspect a stuck VOLUME down(-) button. A normal button will give you that tactile feel, compare it with the other buttons. If it feels similar to the other buttons then it could be the switch behind that button. The switch used in most front panel buttons are called ‘tact’ switch, obviously named because of that tactile feedback

Symptom-The TV would fire up with a request to Auto Scan Channels. If I selected this it would perform a scan and revert to the same screen. I could not get remote controller to work reliably, nor keypad functions on the set to function properly. Repair-unplugged the control button / control pad keypad from the main control board. TV works with remote

This means that the Audio Processing Circuit on the Mainboard of your TV has failed. The mainboard is the board that houses all of the Audio Video jacks on the back of the TV and is accessible/replaceable by removing the of the set. You would need to replace this board to fix the problem, and it is a fairly common failure in this TV.

Repair–Suspect T-Con Board–Sometimes, just resitting, unplugging and re-plugging the flexible ribbon wire from the T-Con board to the LCD panel, will fix it-If not replace T-Con Board-

Symptom-I turn on my LC320EMX 32 tv. and the screen with “digital television” on it appears, but then it shuts off after 3 seconds and goes directly to standby mode

Symptom- TV went out when we had a bad storm. We had lightning hit a near by power box we lost power. The TV didn’t work anymore and neither did our internet box we had to get a new router.

Symptom- the unit powers on with a steady red light on the front panel. However, I could not turn the unit on using either the remote or mechanical buttons. The red standby light never flashes and remains steady.

Emerson LF401EM5 TVSymptom- “Heard a small pop...then tv went off and will not come back on????” Repair- Fuse Popped, He decided to just replace Power Board

Symptom-The TV comes on for about 10 minutes and then I loose the picture . I have sound but no picture.. If I shut the TV down and wait about 10 minutes or so it will start up and then do the same thing

Emerson LF501EM4 TV Symptom- tried to turn it on and it wouldn’t do anything. It just does nothing no lights or any kind of sounds. Repair- Replace Power Board, TV works fine

Emerson LF501EM5F TV Symptom- Bought it less than 2 years ago and now won’t turn on. The Led light is solid red once I plug it back in. I took the rear panel off and can hear a small humming sound in the marked location. Repair- Replace Main Board

One day i turned off my tv and it wouldn’t start up. As soon as I tried to turn it on the red light turned off. From that point I had to unplug and replug the tv in until the red light came back on

Symptom- Red standby light is on. When pressing power button the red light goes off, the screen looks like it wants to turn on, but then TV goes back to red light after 1-2 seconds.

Hisense f42k20e LED TVSymptom- When plugged in red light at bottom right stays on but no picture or sound. Black screen. Tried flashlight in dark, no picture or movement seen

Replace- Replaced the power board with a new one and replaced the main board as well and also replaced the t- con board–No ChangeRepair–1 burnt Led on LED Strip inside panel–

Hisense 50K23DG LED-LCD HDTV - 50K23DG Symptom- red light comes on, flashes 6 times Replace- Replaced the power board with a new one and replaced the main board as well and also replaced the t- con boardNo Change Repair1 burnt Led on LED Strip inside panel

The 10 flash error code is because the power is disrupted do to a short to ground in one of the LEDs. I was able to get the TV to work by soldering a jumper wire across the burned out LED, but I believe the increased wattage on the rest of the LEDs causes them to burn out prematurely.

Symptom- My Hisense TV will not turn on. Model number LTDN42v68us. When it turns on the red light is on indicating it is off. When I try to turn on it flashes between the blue light and the red light 3-4 times. Then stays blue. Blue will not go away. If I hit power button again it stays blue. I tried replacing the power supply board. This did not help.

Hisense F55T39EGWD Led TV Symptom- ” it doesn’t turn on. When i plug in, the screen is black and the red lights are solid (not blinking). Then when I press the power on, the light turns blue for 3 seconds, and after that keeps blinking/flashes blue and red light on and off continuously” Repair- Replaced Power Board, same issue. Hisense 65″ Smart TV Symptom- Hisense tv comes on and displays the android logo, but stays there. It looks like it freezed on that screen. Repair- Replace Main Board

Symptom-Insignia flat screen TV while on, about every 10minutes turns it self to a black screen for a few seconds then says ” please wait” then returns to picture

Insignia NS 50D550NA15 TV Symptom- While watching the tv I could hear a sizzling sound a flickering light in the top right corner and then the picture faded to black . I have changed the power supply board and with the new board installed there is power and audio. I can see a picture doing a flashlight test but I do not see any backlights. Repair- Replaced Power Board, have sound no picture. Can see movement, with flashlight-Apparently, shorted Mosfet on Power Board, burnt LED strip inside panel.

Repair–I used the buttons on the side of the TV rather than on the remote. Volume - and Menu whilst switching on at the wall, then power on and release all 3 buttons. Took about 20 seconds and then back to normal. You may have to do this more than once–

Unplug TV for 10 seconds at least. Then, press and hold down the “MENU and VOLUME DOWN (-)” buttons, at the same time for about 10 seconds. Then after 10 seconds of holding the 2 buttons down, continue to hold the 2 buttons and press and let go of the power button. In other words after 10 seconds of holding down the volume down (-) and menu buttons, add the third button (power) and immediately let go of all 3 buttons, at the same time–

JVC LT22DD52J LED TV/DVD Symptom-Turns on, then turns off, blue light on the front flashing. TV shows message “The TV has switched itself to standby mode because no operation was made for a long time” Repair-Re-setting NVRAM (EEPROM)

Symptom–While I was fixing a ribbon cable on LCD screen TCON board popped. Replaced with new one but now my screen has sound but image is extremely bright. With image but no colors.

Repair–Replaced T-Con Board–No change. Found shorted VA1-(Variable Resistor) Since it is on the Control Board, which is Micro Soldered to the Panel and cannot be replaced, it`s considered as panel failure-

Repair–The internal LED’s have burned out, causing the entire led strips not to operate. Either the led strips would have to be replaced if available or the bad LED’s would have to be bypassed.

Activate the TV’s menu — let’s see if that flickers too. We want to see if the menu flickers, because it might be only the TV’s picture that flickers. If the menu flickers, then we know we’re dealing with the panel or the TCON. If only the picture flickers and the menu is steady, then we know we’re dealing with the Main board.

LG LED TV-50LN5310 Symptom–Turns on quick white flash (Backlights) then sound, no picture- Repair-Burnt Line inside panel on negative side–Re-soldered negative line on connector

Symptom- When I turn on the TV, it dies a ‘gradual death’, at first there’s picture then slowly a part of the screen goes dark and then the entire screen’s black

Repair–Press the HOME button on the remote control. Choose the SETTINGS icon in the MY APPS section. Scroll down to the OPTION menu. Find the MODE SETTING which will allow the adjustment between STORE DEMO and HOME USE. Turn off the DEMO MODE and set the TV to HOME USE before pressing the CLOSE button. This should resolve the matter

Symptom–I have an LG TV and a Sony DVD player, and every time I try to watch a DVD, the display screen (for color mode... vivid, cinema, sport, etc.) keeps popping up. It pops up on one side, then goes away, then pops up on another side, then goes away

Symptom–We were watching TV, when cable system went out. Upon getting cable restored back, when I turned TV on, the screen is now red and will not play any channels–

Unplug TV from wall plug for 10 minutes, then press and hold power button on TV for 60 seconds–Plug in turn on– Also try leaving it unplugged overnight.

Symptom- “when you turn it on the light turns white then fades away slowly, tv then turns off and a red light starts flashing 2 fast 1steady like, over and over”

Symptom–TV turned itself off after a couple of hours of watching, and won’t turn itself back on–The led standby light does not light up- Repair–Replace Power Board

Troubleshooting–I disconnected the IR Sensor the light stopped flashing–installed new IR Sensor and the TV turned on. When the TV came on, colors were flashing on the screen. Red, green, blue, white, black, etc.. repeat Repair–Replaced Main Board–

Now, You only have 2 boards- Power Board and Main Board. What I need you to do, is disconnect the LVDS Cable, the cable that runs from, Main Board to T-Con at top of Panel–See picture below- Disconnect at red box, plug in TV. Does it come on–

Magnavox 46ME313V/F7Symptom-Magnavox LED TV won’t turn on. The red light is on, but will not respond to the remote or the buttons on TV. Tried replacing IR Sensor, No change–

Symptom–TV is on, with solid blue power light-no picture and no sound, Repair–Replaced IR Sensor, Replaced Power Board, still no change. Replace Main Board, TV works fine–

Symptom-Push Power button to turn on, light green, screen warms up and you see the channel/mode in upper left hand corner, then a bright, clear picture for about 2 seconds. Then TV shuts itself off–light back to red.

Symptom- last week my remote stopped working but tv worked fine. I got home from work this week and all I have is a power light flashing slowly, about 2 secs on 1 sec off. The TV will not power up at all.

Panasonic 42 THAS610D LED TV Symptom- backlights are looking fine, no picture- Repair- Checked SMD Fuse is good. Replaced T-Con, no difference When removing 1 FPC Cable(Cable at top of T-Con, we get 1/2 picture. Was considered panel Failure’

Philips LCD TVSmoke like shadow on one side of the screen It is most likely a LCD panel problem. It is costly and impractical to have it replaced. You can only discern the smoke like shadow on low light scenes

Symptom-TV goes into a “power cycle” after a while (ca. 15-20 min).Screen goes off and on randomly but the red standby led doesn’t turn on like after shutoff–

Symptom- TV screen went dark. led light in front comes on, but screen remains dark. there is no movement after shining flash light on TV screen. There seems to be a backlight on however.

RCA 42″ Flat Screen TVSymptom–I have only half the screen is working . After it warms up the you can see the whole thing. Repair-This problem is either the T-Con Board or Panel Failure–

Symptom- i recently replaced the power board on the above model TV. Now when it is plugged in the it shows a solid red light. When the power button is pushed it seems to attempt to start up by showing a lighter black/grey screen. Then after a few seconds it turns back off and goes back to the solid red light

Symptom-My remote for the TV works as long as I do not have my satellite box on. When I turn my satellite on, the remote volume only works. It worked one minute and the next it didn’t. The side buttons on the TV still work

Repair- resolved it by plugging television directly into outlet and not power strip. I was told by DISH network their receivers were not compatible with this model TV so there was a signal interference. Only way to shut TV off or use remote is to unhook the satellite

RCA LED48G45RQ LED HDTV Symptom- ” red power button comes on but the power/picture won’t show on screen” Repair- Replaced Power Board. Still no picture. The red light does come on and after hitting power a blue screen will periodically flash on the screen but still no on screen. Short on LEDs.

Symptom-The TV screen comes on and goes off after a few minutes.. The HDMI ports are not registering the USB port registered I was able to test sound and video via USB.

Symptom- When I turn it on, the blue light in the front of the TV turns on, you hear it click as if it were turning on, but after a few seconds the blue light goes off and you hear the TV click off

Repair-3 shorted LEDs inside panel–In stead of replacing strips, put a jumper resistor and soldered in–Use 5K Resistors is best–Remember his LEDs where in Sequence and not Parallel–

Symptom- “After a few minutes the tv goes off”. The power sensor light sometimes blinks and goes dim. the plug is removed after a few minutes the TV will turn on again and repeat same process

RCA LED42C45RQ TV Symptom- Red power light is on. When I try to power on red light goes off but there is no picture or sound Repair Replace Power Board. Small% Main Board

Symptom- MY standby light is bright when it’s first plugged in, but fades out and TV does not power on. I have replaced power board and still have the same issue.

Symptom- Stopped turning on (no red light)when plugged in. It would come on after several power cycles and TV worked, but turning power on and off soon stopped working red light only, blinks briefly, and wont stay on

Samsung-LCD TV Multiple Color Vertical Lines- This type of TV problem, we must call out the OSD Menu to confirm–If the OSD Menu is showing normally on the screen, but the-background is full of color vertical lines then this symptom is caused by the Main Board or LVDS Cable–

Samsung PS51E6500 Plasma TV Symptom- The screen turned black, the Smart TV logo came up for about half a second. The screen stays completely black and it doesn’t react to anything, including changing channels, opening the menu, etc. The sound, however, does work. When the TV is turned on, there is a slight glow for about 2 seconds, after which the screen turns completely black. Repair- Replace Main Board

The only thing you have to do is disconnect the cable between the power board and main board. Then, power on your TV. If you see the back light in the back of panel the problem is the main board if not, the power supply is the problem.

Symptom- The picture will flash on momentarily when the TV is powered on but disappears. Audio is fine and you can see the faint outline of movement on the screen beneath the black.

Sanyo DP50719Sanyo TV that’s clicking and flashing as if it wants to come on. Oh yeah the green light comes on for a second or so ,screen flashes and clicks off! No standby light at all!

This is a common issue with Sanyo TV’s resetting your tv will not work. Resetting a cable box or anything else will not work. The only way to get sound is to do exactly as the message says. I have been looking for 3 years to find a fix so I can just use my HDMI but, no one on the internet or others I have contacted know how to fix it. In short, you will have to use an audio cord and put your HDMI cord in the port it says to when you get the message. Sorry that I was not much help.

It wasn’t coming on at all so I replaced the power board. That wasn’t the problem so I replaced the main board. TV back light lights up now but no picture

SharpLC-52D62U TV. The screen has an intermittent problem. Sometimes when I power on, it is a fabulous display. Other times I get a sort of checkered blue line pattern

Sony LCD TVHas dim picture–1 of the CCFL(cold cathode fluorescent lamp/light) could have burnt or the circuit(inverter) that powers it might have failed. A technician will usually swap the connectors between the suspected dead lamp with the other good ones. The backlight consist of more than 2 CCFLs. When swapped and the dark area is at the same location then you have a bad lamp, otherwise suspect the inverter.

Symptom-TV screen goes blank (the backlight stays lit) and the speakers emit a horrible loud pitch screech. Usually lasts for about 2-5 seconds, then TV restarts itself, then it goes back to normal as if nothing happened

Sony 52″ LCD TVSymptom-Turns off by its self after a few minutes- Try to check first TIMER Settings on the TV set. Disable features such as auto-off and sleep timer. If everything seems to be ok, check air vent holes for possible obstruction and clean, maybe a sign of overheating.

If the menu flickers, then we know we’re dealing with the panel or the T-CON Board. If only the picture flickers and the menu is steady, then we know we’re dealing with the Main board.

Symptom–Every time I turn it off with the remote or with the TV buttons the tv will go off then the power lights starts flashing green and then the TV comes back on–

Sylvania LC320SL1 TVSymptom–Powers on then continuously cycles through channels rapidly–Repair–Take your button board apart and clean it– You can soak it in Isopropyl Alcohol and pull it out press the channel up and down buttons, swish it around and do it a few times–What you have is oxidization, age, not hard to clean–

Symptom– Turns on, then says “Digital Television” then turns off.( Short flash of Light...and a short Display ) This type of failure is almost always caused by Inverter circuit failure, in the majority of LCD TV’s. Check the pico fuses or smd fuses and HV Transformers in the main inverter circuit, but with these models, I know that one of the HV Transformers, often develops a open a secondary winding. It is usually the HV Transformer, at location T1100

Symptom- Remote and buttons on TV don’t work. Turns on automatically when plugged in, green light in lower right blinks for at least a minute and then TV Freezes–

Reset-I did what you asked with the volume while holding channel button at the same time while turning on the power , and it’s been about 2 hours now just wanted to let you know it’s been three days TV still on and working

Symptom-Once the TV has been off awhile when I turn the TV on there’s no sound-When the sound isn’t working the gray box is empty just a box. I try to turn the sound up and the box at the bottom is just a white line

Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are the most widely used display technology. Their applications cover TV, mobile phone, appliances, automotive, smart home, industrial meters, consumer electronics, POS, marine, aerospace, military etc. LCD screen display problem can occur for several reasons.

Effect of environmental conditions on the LCD assembly. Environmental conditions include both the effects of temperature and humidity, and cyclic loading.

Effect of manufacturing process. With the development of LCD for more than 40 years and the modern manufacturing equipment, this kind if defects are getting rear.

Common failures seen in LCDs are a decrease in screen contrast, non-functioning pixels or the whole display, and broken glass. Different kinds of LCD display problem need to have different kinds of fix methods or make the decision not worthwhile to repair.

Broken glassIf you accidently drop the LCD and you find it broken on the surface but the display still works. You might just break the touch panel; you can find a repair house or find a youtube video to replace the touch panel. If you find the display not showing, especially you find the fluid leaking out. You need to reply the whole display modules.

Dim LCD displayLCD can’t emit light itself. It uses backlight. Normally, the backlight is not fully driven, you can increase the LED backlight to make a dim LCD display brighter. But if you LCD display has been used for a long time, it is possible that the LED backlight has to be the end of life (not brightness enough) if you turn on 100% backlight brightness. In that case to fix LCD screen, you have to find a way to change the backlight. For some display, it is an easy job but it can be difficult for other displays depending on the manufacturing process.

LCD has white screen – If a LCD has a white screen which means the backlight is good. Simply check your signal input sources which are the most causes. It can also be caused by the display totally damaged by ESD or excess heat, shock which make the LCD controller broken or the connection failure which has to be repaired by professionals.

Blur ImagesAs the LCD images are made of RGB pixels, the screen shouldn’t be blur like old CRT displays. If you do see blur images, they might be caused by two reasons. 1) LCD has certain response time, if you are playing games or watch fast action movies, some old LCD displays can have image delays. 2) The surface of the LCD is made of a layer of plastic film with maximum hardness of 3H. If you clean the surface often or use the wrong detergent or solvent which cause the surface damage. To fix damage on LED screen it’s need to be changed with professionals.

Ever had your TV showing nothing but a black screen even if the audio was working? Unfortunately, that’s a common issue with low/middle-end LCD/LED TVs these days… Even more frustrating, this issue often comes from a rather tiny and cheap component that can be easily replaced. Most common issues are:

One of my relatives had this exact symptom happening all of a sudden. This problem on low-end TVs often occurs within the first couple years. As the repair costs for that kind of TV is pretty low, considering repairing it yourself might be a good idea!

That implies disassembling the TV to access the backlight which is between the LCD screen in the front and the boards in the rear. In my case, with a Samsung F5000, I had to process as follows:

First we have to remove the back housing to reveal the boards (from left to right: main board, T-CON, power supply) and disconnect the LCD panel from the T-CON board.

Note: Older TVs have neon tubes for backlight, which is thicker and less exposed to this kind of failure. LED backlight is the most common thing these days, but do not mistake an LED TV with an OLED TV. The first one is a classic LCD panel with a LED backlight, whereas the second is an OLED panel that doesn’t need any backlight as it is integrated in each pixels (making the spare parts much more expensive by the way).

For starters I’ll go with the third one, just to make sure there is no other issues with the TV, but afterwards it’s better to replace the LED with a new one, otherwise you might notice a darker spot on the image.

Once we have by-passed the LED, we can power the TV on. Careful! High voltage (200-300v) runs through the TV when plug, so be very careful how you handle it so you don’t electrify yourself!

Now we just need to unplug the TV, replace the LED with a new one and put everything back together. Just to be sure, we should power the TV back on and check that everything is fine.

There might be a lot of other root causes for similar symptoms, a black screen often looks like something very serious and therefore expensive to repair, but this case is the perfect example that taking some time to look for the root cause can sometime lead to a good surprise: here a 1$ fix!

Some LCD blur or ghosting issues result from electrical interference or faulty surge protectors. To eliminate this as a cause, try plugging your TV directly into the outlet without any power strips or surge suppressors in the chain. If that solves the problem, you can try using a different power strip.

You should also try switching off devices on the same circuit as the TV. Any device with an AC motor, such as a fridge, air conditioner, or fan can cause electrical interference. It’s unlikely that these devices would be on the same circuit as the outlet for your TV, but it’s worth checking.

One of the most common causes of a blurry picture on a flat-screen LCD TV (or monitor) is a mismatch between the content’s resolution and the native resolution capability of the screen.

LCD, Mini-LED, microLED, Plasma, OLED, or QD-OLED all use different types of technology to make moving pictures. However, one thing they all have in common is a “native” resolution. This refers to the TV’s grid of physical pixels (picture elements). A 4K UHD TV has a pixel grid of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is four times as many pixels as a Full HD TV at 1920×1080. So, for every pixel of information in a Full HD image source, the TV must fill four physical pixels’ worth of data.

Various TVs and set-top box devices offer different options regarding how they should scale lower-resolution sources to a higher-resolution screen. We can’t be very specific here because different devices and TVs have other names and menu systems. So you’re better off looking in your manual or online for anything to do with “upscaling” and your devices.

One important tip we can give you is to avoid having the TV itself do the upscaling. High-end televisions may have superior upscaling technology, but mid-range and low-end sets generally don’t have the processing power to upscale with good results.

Instead, if you’re using a connected device like a cable box, gaming console, Android TV, Apple TV, or another similar source, set its output resolution to match your TV’s native resolution. Any upscaling will happen on that device before it reaches the TV.

If you are watching a streaming video source (such as the Netflix or Hulu app on a smart TV), then the fuzzy image may have nothing to do with your TV and everything to do with your bandwidth or quality settings.

Go to the picture settings of your streaming app of choice and set your quality and bandwidth usage preference. With some streaming apps (e.g., Disney Plus), you can select the preferred quality while watching your content. Change the quality setting from automatic to a setting that matches what your TV was designed to display.

Bear in mind that your internet connection may simply be too slow to stream at your TV’s sharpest quality. It may also take a few seconds for the stream to switch to the higher-quality mode. There are also different quality “bitrates” within each resolution tier. So although you may be streaming at (for example) 4K, if it’s at the lower end of the bitrate for that resolution, there can still be blurring, fuzziness, or other artifacts in the picture.

If at all possible, switch to HDMI instead. Returning to our DVD player example, some models provide HDMI output and have internal upscalers designed to make DVD footage look sharper on modern HDTVs.

HDMI is digital, and usually, it works correctly or not at all. We have seen situations, though, where bad ports or cables can cause snow or other image artifacts. HDMI is built to have a certain level of digital error correction. However, if the amount of electrical interference or damage to a cable or port passes a threshold, it may degrade the image.

One fix for a blurry or fuzzy video is to switch out the HDMI cable or move it to another input on the TV to check if there might be something wrong with the cable or the port.

Virtually all modern HDTVs offer a form of digital sharpening. This is usually listed under TV settings alongside contrast, brightness, etc. Use your TV remote control to access those menus, usually by first pressing the menu button.

Unlike CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs, all modern flat-screen TVs exhibit a type of motion blur known as sample-and-hold motion blur. In addition, lower-end TVs may have inherent blur as the individual pixels change their state too slowly.

Companies like Samsung and Sony have worked tirelessly to create new panel technologies to combat these issues. If you have an old TV, it may not benefit from the fast pixel response times more recent models can achieve.

As for motion blur caused by the sample-and-hold nature of flat panel technology, there are two main features you can activate to combat it. The first is motion smoothing, also known as frame interpolation. Different TV brands have other names, so you’ll have to look for something that refers to motion, smoothness, or do a web search for your TV model with the term “motion smoothing.”

The second feature is something known as Black Frame Insertion (BFI). This inserts a black frame between every frame displayed on the screen. This makes the TV offer motion closer to a pulsed CRT display, thus defeating sample-and-hold blur. However, this comes at the cost of brightness and vibrancy. Newer TVs don’t suffer as much as older models, but either way, you can switch the feature on and decide which image you prefer.

Post-processing features are all of the things that the TV does to the image before displaying it. TV manufacturers have a “secret sauce” of algorithms that help make images look better, but too much post-processing can leave a soft and blurry image.

Turn off as many post-processing effects as possible, using your TV manual as a guide, and then experiment with the ones that offer the best picture without causing too much blur. Noise reduction may be one of the most important settings to adjust if you’re experiencing a snowy or speckled image.

If nothing you’ve tried above seems to resolve your fuzzy, blurry TV, it’s probably time to have a professional tech support person look at your TV. In some cases, it may be as simple as replacing a relatively inexpensive component. But if there’s something wrong with the core components of the TV, it’s often not worth the expense to replace those major parts. If your TV is still under warranty, you should refrain from letting anyone work on it, even if it is a minor problem. Instead, have it repaired and replaced under warranty.

However, if the digitizer or LCD is also damaged during a fall, that screen no longer carries value because it cannot be refurbished. Repair shops cannot sell broken LCDs to refurbishing companies; therefore, they cannot offset the cost of an LCD repair. That is why repair stores often charge a little extra if there is damage to the LCD or digitizer, to make up for that loss. Repair stores that don’t have an additional charge for an LCD repair typically inflate their glass repair price to make up for the loss from damaged LCDs. If they have one price, that means everyone is paying more to cover the cost of customers who have damaged LCDs and customers who only have cracked glass. If your phone or tablet’s glass is shattered there will be cracks or chips on the screen itself. If it is just the glass that is damaged, the device may still function and you may be able to use it normally. If this is the case, it is likely that only the glass needs to be replaced. To prevent further damage to your device it is best to get it repaired quickly. For example, if liquids seep through the cracks it could cause permanent damage to the LCD.

Many people may continue to use their touchscreen with shattered glass and delay fixing the glass on their devices; however, if the touchscreen isn’t responsive, it could be a sign of more significant damage to the device’s digitizer which is integrated with the LCD screen.

A pixelated screen can indicate LCD damage. This would look like a patch of multicolored dots, a line or lines of discoloration, or a screen with rainbow colors. For many people, these colors are an easy way to know that their LCD is broken and that they should get it repaired.

Dropping your phone isn’t the only reason you’ll end up with a pixelated screen. Over time, your screen’s LCD may break down through regular use. This happens to other devices aside from your smartphone or tablet. Pixelation can happen to TVs and computers, too. People typically decide to buy a new device when this happens. A black screen or black spots on your smartphone or tablet is an indication of a damaged LCD. Often with a bad LCD, a phone may still turn on and make noises, but there is no clear picture. The Hisense U8H matches the excellent brightness and color performance of much pricier LCD TVs, and its Google TV smart platform is a welcome addition. But it’s available in only three screen sizes.

The Hisense U8H is the best LCD/LED TV for most people because it delivers the performance of a much pricier TV yet starts at under $1,000, for the smallest (55-inch) screen size. This TV utilizes quantum dots, a full-array backlight with mini-LEDs, and a 120 Hz refresh rate to deliver a great-looking 4K HDR image. It’s compatible with every major HDR format. And it’s equipped with two full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs to support 4K 120 Hz gaming from the newest Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Add in the intuitive, fully featured Google TV smart-TV platform, and the U8H’s price-to-performance ratio is of inarguable value.

Chief among the U8H’s many strengths is its impressive peak brightness. When sending it HDR test patterns, I measured an average brightness of 1,500 nits, with peaks just north of 1,800 nits (a measurement of luminance; see TV features, defined for more info). To put that into perspective, consider that the 65-inch version of our budget 4K TV pick (the TCL 5-Series) typically costs around half as much as the 65-inch U8H but achieves only around 30% to 40% of its brightness. On the other side of the coin, the 65-inch version of our upgrade pick (the Samsung QN90B) costs almost twice as much as the 65-inch U8H, but it achieves only nominally higher brightness. Adequate light output creates convincing highlights and image contrast and (when necessary) combats ambient light from lamps or windows. It is a necessity for any TV worth buying—especially if you hope to watch HDR movies or play HDR games—and the U8H simply outpaces most TVs in its price range (and some in the next price bracket up, too).

Key to this functionality is the U8H’s employment of mini-LED backlighting with local dimming, which allows this TV to produce very bright light while still maintaining satisfyingly deep black levels that are typically free of blooming (or light bleed that’s visible around bright objects against a dark backdrop). This not only ensures impressive image contrast, it also makes the U8H a viable choice for most rooms, whether they’re brighter than average or dimmed down like a movie theater.

That’s not to say the U8H has pixel-precise light control—it’s not an OLED TV, after all—but it does a terrific job most of the time. In fact, in our tests, the U8H bested last year’s upgrade pick, the Samsung QN90A, in certain scenarios: The intro to Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix features the filmmaker against a pitch-black backdrop. Though last year’s QN90A failed to maintain perfect control over dimming elements during this scene (the black backdrop brightened distractingly once a sufficient amount of brighter content appeared on screen), the U8H did not. (For the record, the newer QN90B also passed this test.) The U8H’s mini-LEDs also help the screen look uniformly bright: Although the U8H is still not as good as an OLED TV in this respect, it shows very little indication of being a backlight-driven display, even during tricky scenes with large swaths of dim lighting.

The U8H’s brightness, black-level integrity, and local-dimming abilities make this an excellent TV for watching HDR content. The U8H is capable of playing HDR content in all of the major formats (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG), but when it comes to impressive HDR, what’s under the hood is much more important than format compatibility. The most crucial thing for good HDR is high brightness and deep color saturation, and the U8H’s quantum dots achieve the latter. It’s not as simple as just having quantum dots, however: While many TVs (even the budget options) have quantum dots nowadays, what is often not taken into account is that brightness directly affects color saturation. For example, both the 2022 TCL 6-Series and the Hisense U8H are equipped with quantum dots, mini-LED backlights, and local dimming. But because the U8H is notably brighter than the 6-Series, it also achieves a higher total color volume. During our color-volume testing, the U8H exhibited color ranges at more than 100% of the DCI-P3 color space (the range of color needed to properly display HDR content), and it is capable of roughly 10% more total color volume compared with the 6-Series.

What does this mean in real-world terms? It means that the Hisense U8H truly excels as a modern 4K HDR TV, whether you’re watching the latest episode of Rings of Power or playing Overwatch 2. While watching HDR content side by side on the U8H and on our upgrade pick, the Samsung QN90B, I was truly surprised by how similar they looked at times, given that our upgrade pick is much more expensive. That said, though the U8H achieves impressive results where light output and color volume are concerned, it also exhibited some occasional video processing and upscaling issues (see Flaws but not dealbreakers), which videophiles and AV enthusiasts may take umbrage with. But in general, the picture quality punches well above its weight, metaphorically speaking.

And thanks to Hisense’s inclusion of Filmmaker Mode, it’s easy to rein in the U8H’s brightness abilities for a more-subdued and filmic experience in a darker room. Our measurements revealed that this mode has a very accurate white balance, mostly accurate colors (green is a bit oversaturated, but not egregiously so), and a perfect “dark room” gamma (which controls how quickly the video signal transitions from dark to light). Additionally, the TV’s 120 Hz refresh rate means it can play Blu-ray discs at 24 fps without the judder that’s usually present on TVs with 60 Hz refresh rates.

The TV’s higher refresh rate also reduces motion blur in faster-moving sports and allows for smoother, more stable motion in games. Two of the four HDMI inputs support 4K gaming at 120 Hz. The U8H measured low input lag while playing in 4K resolution, and Hisense’s helpful GameZone setting in the picture menu allowed me to confirm the presence of 120 Hz playback and variable refresh rate during games.

The onboard Google TV smart platform is another feather in this TV’s cap. As usual, however, it will be much more satisfying to use if you have a Google account and already take advantage of Google’s connected services, like Photos. The experience of navigating the TV’s smart features—scanning QR codes to sign into apps, using the onscreen keyboard, and browsing your Google Photos to set a photo as a screensaver—was very satisfying in terms of responsiveness and speed. Powering on the TV and booting into an app took just seconds. The included Bluetooth remote is also equipped with a handy “Hey Google” button, allowing you to pull up Google’s assistant and use voice commands to search for content or set a reminder. If you have multiple users with their own Google accounts, you can designate separate profiles (attached to a Gmail account) so that each user can customize the experience to their liking, as well as access their own Google Drive or Photos. While some reviewers have reported instances of momentary freezing while using the U8H’s platform, I didn’t personally experience any instances of slowdown that were egregiously worse than with any other smart-TV platform.

In terms of design, the Hisense U8H is not as svelte as our upgrade pick, but it’s plenty sturdy and doesn’t look or feel cheap. Two narrow, metal feet jut out from beneath the panel and steadily hold the TV. They can be attached in two separate spots, either closer in toward the middle of the panel or out toward the edges, to account for different-size TV stands. The feet are also equipped with cable organization clasps—a nice touch for keeping your TV stand free of cable clutter. Though the TV is primarily plastic, its bezels are lined with metal strips, providing a bit more durability in the long run. I moved it around my home, and it was no worse for wear, but we’ll know more after doing some long-term testing.

The Hisense U8H has some difficulties with banding, or areas of uneven gradation, where transitions that should appear smooth instead look like “bands” of color (sometimes also called posterization). Like many current 4K HDR TVs, the U8H uses an 8-bit panel rather than a 10-bit panel, which affects the color decoding and color presentation process. This is usually relevant only with HDR video and games. When playing games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, I saw a few instances where the content wasn’t rendered correctly and displayed ugly splotches of color on the screen. However, this almost always occurred during static screens (such as a pause menu or loading screen); I rarely spotted it during actual gameplay. Hisense has stated that it would address the problem in a future firmware update, but at the time of writing it was still present. This is a flaw that may give dedicated gamers pause, but we don’t consider it to be a dealbreaker for most people.

I also saw occasional instances of banding with TV shows and movies, though they were few and far between. The U8H isn’t the best at upscaling sub-4K content, so videos with a 1080p or lower resolution looked a little soft. You can get better overall video processing and upscaling by springing for our upgrade pick (this is one reason it’s more expensive, after all).

Although the UH8 TV has four HDMI inputs, only two of them are fully HDMI 2.1–compatible. And one of those is designated as the eARC input (intended as an audio connection for a soundbar or AV receiver connection). So if you’re pairing an external audio system with the U8H, you may have only one input remaining that can support HDMI 2.1 features like 4K 120 Hz playback, variable refresh rate, and auto game mode; this could be a dealbreaker if you own more than one current-gen gaming console. If you’re in that boat, you may want to splash out some extra dough for our upgrade pick. Additionally, folks using pre-HDMI source devices—like the five-cable composite connector with green, red, blue, and red/white audio inputs—should be aware that this TV requires an adapter to allow those devices to connect, and an adapter is not included in the box.
