Today TomTom has announced two new versions of their TomTom GPS watches. These new additions add in optical heart rate monitoring straight into the back of both the TomTom Runner and Multisport GPS watches. The new line – called the ‘Cardio’ utilizes the well known Mio sensor technology to measure your heart rate directly at your wrist, and does so in a form factor that’s waterproof to 50-meters.
I’ve been using the unit now on a number of rides and runs, and thus have a very solid grasp of how well they’ve completed the integration. Which, is really what this is. It’s essentially taking an existing TomTom Runner (or Multisport unit), and stuffing a Mio optical sensor in the back to measure heart rate and adding a couple of heart-rate specific information screens. Beyond that, it’s basically identical to the existing units. Of course, the addition of the optical sensor is a pretty huge thing.
As you’ll see shortly, the TomTom Cardio variant of the Runner and Multisport is identical in size to that of the non-cardio versions. And, both the Runner and Multisport Cardio units are visually identical as well to each other.
But first, we’ll look how it compares to other units in the running and triathlon realm. I tried to put as many competitive units as possible into the same picture, including those that compete with both the Runner and Multisport editions.

The TomTom watch is really a runners watch, that happens to bike and swim on the side. So in many ways, I find that it’s at its best while I’m running. To start off an activity, we’ll dive into the menu using the button below the display. This buttons acts like a little joystick to control the unit. The display itself can be tapped along the right edge to turn on/off the light, as well as to create laps in certain situations.
The optical sensor is generally also quite quick, finding my HR in under about 10-seconds. Though sometimes I’ll notice it takes a little bit longer (upwards of 20-30 seconds) to find HR and start displaying it.
Once that’s ready, we’ll press to the right to start the run. As we do so the unit will immediately start recording data and displaying the metrics we’ve chosen.
The unit will always display two metrics up top (known as ‘left’ and ‘right’), as well as one metric down below on the main screen. You can press up/down to change the main screen metric, and you can customize the left/right metrics in the settings.
The TomTom Multisport Cardio variant supports a cycling mode, which enables you to have a dedicated cycling mode. Within this mode you can configure slightly different display screens, while also connecting to a cycling speed/cadence sensor. Further, if you purchase the ‘Performance Bundle’ edition, you’ll also get a barometric altimeter. Note this is a physical hardware change, and thus, is a separate physical unit and not just a simple firmware update.
Except, here’s the thing – in my case, I was using the non-performance bundle, and thus, the elevation data shown on the site is actually from the server based on my GPS route, rather than recorded by the unit itself. This is true of the runner as well.
Finally, it’s worth noting that while the Multisport unit defaults to speed for cycling, you can actually use the TomTom Runner Cardio in running mode and just change the metric to speed instead of pace. It’ll label your workouts as ‘Runs’ on TomTom MySports, but ultimately if you export to any other 3rd party sites you can easily just change the activity type to ride.
In any case, the size is saved, but you’ll need to remember to switch back your total unit settings if your pool size doesn’t match what units you normally want displayed in running/cycling.
You can press the up/down button to change display fields, and like in running and swimming you can specify the upper two display fields be whatever you’d like.
Looking at the above, there’s one spot at about the 12 mile marker where the unit seems to drop by about 20bpm. It’s unclear if that was reality or not (since the strap below doesn’t show it). You can also see a bit more variability in the second half of the run with the strap, as she increased intensity. She noted to me that the numbers were nearly always the same or within 1BPM or so when she looked at the displays. So from her HR zone pacing perspective, they were both valid.
I did note however that the TomTom site failed to display/load my 26-hour journey. Instead, I just used an export of the file and uploaded it to a 3rd party site that would take the file. I suspect having a file longer than 24 hours was the issue.
When in standby the unit will always display the time of day (hours:minutes), as well as the date. It does not have an option to display the day of week, nor seconds. You can configure the time to display in either 12-hour or 24-hour format (i.e. 1:50PM or 13:50).
The backlight can be enabled at any time in standby mode by simply tapping the right side of the display. Additionally, the backlight can be switched to enabled for an entire activity, such as a night run. When you do this however you’ll burn through battery much quicker than normal – so be aware. Below, you can see the backlight in action:
With the backlight on I found it quite easy to see the display and numbers, even while on the bike with the unit on my wrist in a slightly awkward position (for cycling with hands on handlebars).
Now, while it may seem like I rushed through this section – in reality, that’s all there is. Seriously, there’s no other things to show or display. What you see above in these half a dozen screenshots is the entirety of the MySports site. There’s no ability to dive deeper intro metrics, nor any ability to display stats like laps that were recorded on the unit. And the granularity of the data leaves much to be desired, due to how smoothed it is. Finally, you can’t tweak any other settings on the unit, such as data field display options.
1) I see the GPS pace dropout occasionally on the display (it just shows a dash line). Sometimes for no particular reason, though sometimes closer to buildings (2-3 story ones). That said, it hasn’t seemed to impact distances at all.

Now, I’ll save you a tiny bit of time and just point out that the TomTom Runner and Runner Cardio are identical except for the line item regarding optical HR sensor. That’s it. Same goes for the Multisport and Multisport Cardio.
For the below, I’ve compared the TomTom Runner Cardio, Garmin FR220, and Suunto Ambit 2R. However, you can easily make your own change with any device you want here at this link.
Fall detection is a feature that relies on accelerometers and other sensors to differentiate between regular movement and a fall. If the wearer falls, the device can perform functions such as sounding an alarm or displaying an alert.
TomTom has released the Spark as the successor of the MultiSport and Run watches. The new Spark model (sometimes called Runner 2) also comes with a new optional feature to play music using a bluetooth headset. It’s the next step of TomTom’s move in the sports market and it’s a nice one. For the new model the watch was also sent to fat camp and lost some weight. It weighs (with cardio) about 46 grams (=1.6 ounces) (take or leave one for the small/big strap). This is around the same weight as the Garmin ForeRunner 225 (53g).
The watch is branded as Multi Sport as it has profiles for Swimming, Cycling, Running, Gym (cross fit for example), Indoor bike, treadmill and freestyle. TomTom also changed the wristband. It’s no longer a ‘classic’ band with a little buckle. The new band has the little pins we’ve seen before on the Runner. But they’ve now integrated them into a new type of buckle. This allows you to put the watch on much easier with one hand and taking it of is just as quick. It’s an improvement in my book. The wristband comes in a small and a large. I have tiny wrists, only 6.5 inches (16.5cm), but I have about 4 holes left on the large wrist band or it would be too big. The small wristband is a better fit for me. It’s also less wide making it look just a bit less bulky. On the small band I have about 4 holes left too, but then in the opposite, so I’m not allowed to get a lot fatter. If you pick up a Spark second hand, you can get a fitting wrist band separately without any problems, they come in some nice colors too.
The display is made of eInk and because of that, it’s black and white and crystal clear with a high contrast. I was misinformed on the technology behind the screen. It’s actually a high contrast monochrome LCD. Pebble uses the same type of screen and calls this e-paper. So that’s a bit cheeky and probably where (in translation back and forth to my native Dutch) I have confused this with eInk.
The Runner 2 does not support HR during swimming and thus does not switch on the LEDs on the back. I’ve tried to trick it with the ‘workout’ mode, but the results were not there. Water distortion, lights, everything makes measuring HR a pretty impossible task while swimming using an optical sensor I’ve tried this before with other watches with very similar results.
The data given in the app and online is rather limited. No lap distance, or lengths, even though it does display on the watch and no stroke recognition.
Not only do you get an integrated heart-rate monitor and the ability to play music without using your phone or iPod, but TomTom also includes a pair of Bluetooth headphones. Plus, the company has made great strides with its app and interface, making this an excellent watch for runners and anyone else who likes to jam out while working out.
While not as colorful, or large, as Garmin"s watch, the Spark 3"s 144 x 168-pixel, black-and-white display was plenty easy to read in both overcast and bright days. I like that the watch"s backlight automatically turns on for a few seconds in dark conditions, and that you can customize the information that appears on screen, so that the data that"s most important to you is front and center.
Like the Garmin Forerunner 235, the Spark 3 will also work as a daily fitness tracker, counting your steps and calories. Here, though, Garmin"s watch has two features that make it more suited for all-day use: Its step counter will automatically increase or decrease your target based on your activity, and it can display notifications from your smartphone, as well as give you a weather report.
GPS, heart rate tracking and the ability to play music, all from a single device, make the $249 TomTom Spark 3 Cardio + Music the best all-around GPS watch for runners, and when you add in the pair of Bluetooth headphones, it"s the best for the money, too. While I prefer the $329 Garmin Forerunner 235"s larger display and smartphone notifications, the Spark 3"s excellent combination of features and lower price make it the more well-rounded option.Today"s best TomTom Spark 3 Cardio + Music deals
TomTom Navigator – a GPS navigation software product for personal digital assistants (PDAs), Palm devices, Pocket PCs, and some smartphones. TomTom Navigator 6 replaced the earlier TomTom Mobile 5.2. It can use GPS receivers built into the device or external (e.g., Bluetooth-connected) receivers. Navigator 7 was the latest release of this software, released as a part of the software that came with the June 2008 HTC Touch Diamond. Frequently used functions can be added to the main screen of the program, and users can report map corrections and share them with other users. Navigator supports touch screens; devices without touch screens use a cursor to input data. The software is available on SD card and DVD. It runs on a number of devices listed on the TomTom website, but will run successfully on many unlisted devices using the Windows Mobile operating system, discontinued in 2010. Following the launch of the new TomTom Runner 2 (also sold under the name TomTom Spark) there was a lot to try, starting with the change of optical pulse sensor in the Cardio version, which now uses LifeQ technology instead of Mio; but also with the inclusion of a version that allows music to be played directly from the clock.

The only thing that differentiates the TomTom Runner 2 from the TomTom Spark is its packaging (and the range of colours for the strap). While the Spark comes in a classic cardboard box, the Runner 2 is presented as you can see below. In the box you can see the version that it is. In the case of the unit given by TomTom for testing, it is the Cardio+Music, the most complete version. At the top there is also a reference to the colour and length of the strap. I have been given the small strap version (and a somewhat feminine colour, so are these tests).
And speaking of the watch, it is made up of two pieces. And the strap is removed with little effort, so it is very easy to change it for another of different length or color, depending on the day. As you can see, the TomTom Runner 2 is not a flat device, but has a small curve. At the bottom is where you find the control pad to operate the watch, which also serves as a GPS antenna. Its placement is really good, because when running with the watch on your wrist that antenna will always be oriented to the sky, ensuring a maximum level of coverage.
In essence, the TomTom Runner 2 is the same watch that many of you love, with some new features added - a tune-up to bring it up to today"s standards, and also according to the model chosen, with some quite new features.
This is what"s new in the TomTom Runner 2 (or TomTom Spark, depending on which you buy), so if you already know the original model you"ll quickly know what"s new in this new iteration.
First of all, you may have noticed that I can refer to the watch as TomTom Runner 2 or TomTom Spark. Although TomTom markets them separately, the only thing that changes between them is the packaging and the available colours of the strap. Everything else is the same: same software, same hardware. Commercially, the Runner 2 is geared towards runners and the Spark focuses on fitness.
Well, once you"ve established the difference between the TomTom Runner 2 and the Spark (belt colours only), let"s look at the different options available for both:
These are the different training modes you can select, but before you go running you should also set up the data screens, which is the second option in the settings menu.
As you know, the TomTom Runner 2 now offers a multisport option in all its versions. In the previous model you had to choose between the Runner (only running profile) or Multisport (in addition to running, you had swimming and cycling profiles).
When you train on a bike, the setting options are the same as for running: same training goals and same possibilities to set data screens (you can select speed, of course), but among the data options the cadence is also offered, if you synchronize the corresponding sensor.
Probably the optical pulse sensor has been the most time I"ve spent on it. The reason is simple, and is that between the first version of the TomTom Runner and this new Runner 2 the most important difference is in the optical sensor. In the first version of the watch the sensor was licensed by Mio, while in the current model is a development of LifeQ, being this Runner 2 or Spark the first to equip a sensor of the company, so I wanted to know in detail what their behavior is.
But the important thing for us is that, today, the TomTom Runner 2 sensor offers the same thing as the TomTom Runner, so now all that remains is to validate the data it produces. To do this I have done many activities together with other devices, being able to compare heart rate data with those obtained by many devices, such as a sensor Mio Link (also optical), the Garmin Forerunner 235 and chest sensors from Garmin, Stryd or Suunto.
In the example below, the sensor of the Forerunner 235 comes into play. During the warm-up all three sensors behave perfectly (with some peak of the 235), but in the working part, climbing hills, it is totally lost. At that time I was wearing another watch next to the 235, and I have the impression that I was touching and moving it, so in the higher intensity exercises I totally lost the reading. However, the performance of the TomTom with respect to the Stryd pulse and power sensor is perfect, both in continuous running and in the intensity working areas.
This erratic reading when cycling is probably due to light entering the sensor area, because unlike other models there is nothing around the sensor to block light from entering. Even the original TomTom Runner Cardio had a sort of "lip" that protected the sensor from light ingress. It is likely that
Here you can see another "trap point" that I usually use. When I turn, I go around the small white statue you see in the picture. It is a very demanding point that is reached through a street with buildings on both sides and trees in the roadway, so the signal must be recovered when exiting into the open. The only one to draw the track around the statue was the Forerunner 230. The TomTom was also quite close, less than a meter away. The Ambit3 was the one that completely missed the turning point.
Another new feature of TomTom Runner 2 and Spark is the inclusion of the activity monitor, something that was totally expected, since it is a basic option of any clock introduced in recent months. Manufacturers have very little difficulty in implementing it (they do not have to add anything at the hardware level, the internal accelerometer is used), so it is an easy way to add one more option to the list of features.
All this in terms of the activity monitor. But the Runner 2 and Spark also analyze your "inactivity", i.e. your sleep. When you"re in the activity monitor section, if instead of pressing the crosshair down to see details of calories and distances, you press it up, 1TP11You"ll see your sleep hours in the same way as the activity, at the day level and globally for the whole week.
The entire range of TomTom Runner 2 and Spark has Bluetooth Smart connectivity, which offers dual functionality, firstly to connect to external sensors and secondly to synchronise with your mobile phone.
In the sensors section, the Runner 2 / Spark can be paired with pulse sensors and speed and/or cadence sensors that have Bluetooth. Therefore it is not compatible with ANT+, analog or Polar Wear Link sensors. Bluetooth connectivity only.
When it comes to connecting to your mobile phone, everything is the same as with the first TomTom Runner. The only utility it offers is to sync activities and GPS cache data. But on Android it has little use at all, because the connection is very slow. And when I say very slow, I mean it. Passing an activity via Bluetooth can mean you have to be glued to your mobile phone for 15 or 20 minutes, and any break in the connection will mean you have to start syncing from scratch.
At the user level, the most important new feature of the TomTom Runner 2 is the music playback offered by the Music or Cardio + Music version. There are few watches that allow you to play music (Adidas miCoach Smart Run, Motorola Motoactv or other Android-based watches, but not sport-specific), so if this feature is important to you, the TomTom Runner 2 / Spark becomes a clear option, probably the most satisfactory of them all.
In short, if you buy the TomTom Runner 2, do it according to the specifications listed today, and don"t let your purchase be guided by possible improvements that the clock may receive in the future. Because they may or may not come. So if these possibilities finally materialise, it"s a reason to be happy, but don"t buy the TomTom Runner 2 Cardio thinking about, for example, notifications. Because although it"s something that TomTom is working on, it may never come true because of problems with the clock"s autonomy (for example).
The TomTom Runner 2 is a slight evolution of the initial model, with a more refined aesthetic, adding the activity monitor function (and in the Music version, music playback).
The Runner 2 is first and foremost a watch designed for running. Not for nothing is the watch a "runner" and not a "biker" or "swimmer". In that sense, the optical sensor of the Cardio version works quite well when running, although it behaves somewhat worse than the Mio sensor I used before. But the LifeQ sensor is brand new, so there may be improvements in its performance. Still, it"s good enough to get a B+.
In short, a watch focused on the popular runner who is less competitive, but still likes to participate in competitions but not with the intention of winning them. If this is your user profile, the TomTom watch can satisfy you in many ways, as long as you don"t need to schedule much more complete workouts than the watch offers.

In those cases, the Garmin Forerunner 35 and TomTom Runner 3 think they can outrun your particular set of runner needs. So on this piece, we are taking these decent runners on a cross country beside each other. Plus, no one needs to jailbreak their savings account just to buy a nice sports watch. So that is a consideration here, too.
The original TomTom Runner is somewhat the second generation of GPS watch coming out of TomTom. But, because the first was a collaboration effort between them and sports conglomerate, Nike, in the form of the Nike+ SportsWatch, the Runner is, in fact, the first ever TomTom GPS sports watch. That may mean TomTom has mastered the Runner out of experiences gained from studying and creating the Nike Sportswatch. Both watches even share looks.
TomTom’s Runner GPS watch measures decently, calculates and displays runners’ performance stats from both an outdoor run or private one on that treadmill you may be so fond of—this at a mid-range price. You can attach a secondary peripheral to this thing, too—such as a heart rate monitor.
On the other side, Garmin Forerunner 35 is similarly a less costly way to measure accurately, compute and analyze runners’ performance by mapping distance, speed, pace, and even routes.
It is 2017, and one of the best things about a sports watch comes up in how it looks, grooves and smoothes onto and on your wrist. It is about durability, fit, skin irritability, what shows up (or misses out) at-a-glance on the display, if you can indeed add a peripheral (pulse rate taker, for example), and if the clasp will make you lose it the first time you take it out on a run. These could coax you to run—or not.
The TomTom Runner GPS Watch design takes a leaf (maybe a branch) off the sleekness of most basic smartwatches—looks like a toned down Sony Smartwatch 3. Most users will like its good looks right off the box. It is lightweight at 50g, and slim too (11.5mm at thickest point), and feels like TomTom designed the Runner for runners.
For a start, the large, 22 by 25 mm display is a real thing. It is ample for stealing a sneak-peek at your running stats in real-time, during day or evening runs (in Night Mode)—so you know whether you are getting around just fine or need to hype up or slow down the pace.
Garmin’s Forerunner 35 is not bad-looking either, but compared to TomTom’s offering, the former offers less novelty on the face. But the FR35 is beautiful on the inside. It keeps it frame slim, lightweight at 42g, and utilitarian—if that is a great thing. Its 2.1 by 2.0 cm (55 x 32 pixels) display may not be particularly pretty, but it gets the job done. It displays the time and day of the week, and you will need to fiddle the innards to get to your run’s stats—doesn’t show real-time run stats right on the home screen like its rival, TomTom Runner GPS sports watch.
The FR35’s clasp fits perfectly, so no worries about losing it while you run, but neither is the TomTom Runner a problem here either. Both sports watch brands thought a rubber clasp could do and we agree too. Both come with perforated straps that ensure the rubber doesn’t get too touchy-feely with your skin and probably wind up causing irritation or uncomfortable sticky situations. Still, the rubbery design of both comes in handy, helping both GPS watches to be waterproof up to 50 meters.
If you aren’t a swimmer as well, this is especially an unnecessary feature since you will most probably want to leave your TomTom Runner 3 GPS watch to sync to your computer via Bluetooth as you shower. Unfortunately, you can’t do so with the Garmin Forerunner GPS sports watch since it lacks Bluetooth connectivity support and you’d have to hard-wire it to your computer via USB connection—or get a Garmin FR 15 if the ability to wirelessly sync data is dear to you.
However, the Garmin FR35 is pretty sturdy when removed compared to the Runner, which fits into its removable clasp rather loosely. The TomTom Runner 3 feels like it would fall off if you decided to carry in your handbag or backpack to your preferred run location.
Maybe that is because TomTom’s Runner watch module and the clasp are two different parts of the same watch. The watch module comes attached together with the GPS module right below it, such that the GPS module is below the display when appended to the strap. Similarly, Garmin Forerunner 35 users can detach the core watch module. So both watches’ rubber straps can be swapped for a Favorite color if you feel it is a greater way to run.
Currently, Garmin FR35 offers bright colors such as orange, violet, lime green and pink. TomTom’s Runner can be exchanged for a limited gray and pink only—a tad un-inspirational if you don’t like either color. But, both watches are not as all-day accessories as the FitBit Flex or Nike FuelBand may be, and neither are both all-out activity trackers, so you probably will be wearing either for a run and clasping it off after you return—maybe.
That detachment also ensures you have unperturbed access to the USB charging ports built into the GPS watches. Look at both runner watches properly and the hardware suggests what you can do with the innards.
Out of the box, you’ll need to use the supplied USB cable to connect it to your PC or Mac via the charging port. Then download Garmin Express to your computer, which is what you will be using to enable any updates for the FR35. After this, create an account with Garmin and sign in. Your Garmin Forerunner 35 GPS sports watch will automatically detect and pair up to sync with your Garmin account.
The Forerunner 35 houses four buttons on the sides—two on the left and another two on the right. The button on the top-left controls the backlight, the one on the bottom-left is good for going back a screen. Press the button on the top-right and you can access the FR35’s options for starting a run.
The same trainer will beep-beep, flicker a light on the display, and audibly murmur inspiration in your ear after every mile you thrash. And during a run, the device shows both distance ran and time over and done, but with a few tweaks (under Settings) you can set it up to concurrently show speed on the always-on display.
The History menu item enables you to track back those past races up to seven prior days’ data, or seven activities. And true to Garmin’s promise, the FR35 does the recalling in pretty relaxed and spot-on fashion. Be sure to check the internal memory status on the display. If it appears scary and spent, the Garmin Connect app can help.
Unfortunately, and unlike the TomTom Runner 3, the Garmin Forerunner 35 conspicuously lacks Bluetooth connection support. So the device cannot sync wirelessly to the GC app as you prepare that after-run smoothie or take a shower. However, whenever you attach the FR35 to your Mac or PC, and sync collected data, the History function reflects the revamped stats on your Garmin device on the go. If you prefer the unclamped presentation achieved by a PC or Mac display, you can analyze the stats from there via USB connection.
You need to stay around, though, unlike the Runner where you can leave it to sync to its accompanying, free IOS and Android apps (TomTom MySports Apps). Unable to attach extra peripherals, the FR35 also cannot hold a heart rate monitor like the TomTom Runner sports watch can. Garmin, however, more than makes up for this slip up in the Forerunner 15, which includes daily activity monitoring and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless syncing among other sweet offerings.
Garmin did not need to rip out the GPS module to net better, faster signal and pinpointing brilliance. But, they still achieved the necessary: the GPS mapping is pretty on point, though, if course, it will vary with locations where it is activated. One skilled user found that it took about 30 seconds to square them in an open park, while it searched unsuccessfully for a signal for up to 4 minutes before calling it quits entirely, in New York’s built-up district of Manhattan. This is not the power of GPS mapping you will find on a FitBit Flex, and is a much stronger than a Nike FuelBand, or SportsWatch will ever be, and ousts the TomTom Runner GPS sports watch by a tad.
The TomTom Runner GPS module sports the “buttons”, instead of the core watch module bezel as in the Garmin Forerunner 35. That is a four-directional pad similar to those used for scrolling through options on earlier Nokia keypad phone models. Despite the different design, those four buttons work to serve pretty much the same purposes as the Garmin Forerunner 35 knobs. But the TomTom Runner GPS watch takes things to another level here, likely because of its dual run modes capability.
With a press of the left button, you get various stats displayed, including battery level and internal storage status. Push on the right one and the GPS sports watch gives you the options of either “Run” or “Treadmill”. For indoor, treadmill workouts, the TomTom GPS sports watch has a built-in accelerometer and sensors to help detect motions of the arms and collect the data accordingly. Follow up with a right push again on “Run” and that activates the GPS module to pinpoint your exact location. Push right when in action and live stats show up in great charm. Those include data being recorded in the form of stride length, lap time, cadence, speed, and if you have your heart rate monitor attached, real-time heart rate stats.
“Exact” is a strong word especially when talking about GPS watches, and open areas snap up GPS signals much faster than built up areas do, but not when describing the accuracy of the TomTom Runner. It is noticeably better than the satnav ability of the Nike SportsWatch, and more in tandem with that of the Garmin Forerunner 35.
TomTom has a name for its accurate GPS technology; they are calling it QuickGPSFix –pretty smart, although, depending on where you activate yours, the Runner can delay up to a couple of minutes before it locks your position from the Earth’s orbit. If you get a tad more motivated and start moving around, this could take longer too.
Laps let you set either manual or automatic laps, of course in consideration of distance and time to cover each lap. Goal, moreover, lets you be the visionary who knows what they want to get out of their runs and treadmill sessions by letting you set up distances to outrun. Choose to run against yourself and against a previous run you’ve conquered, and the Runner displays your current run and selected last run simultaneously.
If you set a certain distance, the GPS sports watch displays your live performance as a percentage of total distance. We like it that the TomTom Runner will vibrate to let you know you have reached (and, ideally, are crossing) your pre-set target or goal distance.
We like Garmin FR35’s audio notifications more, though. Because if you run with headphones on and running music blaring and body shaking, you just might miss the Runner’s stealth vibration—definitely not the same case when you have a Garmin Forerunner speaking straight to your ear drum.
That target could be a kilometer, mile, or whatever distances that suit you. New runners or treadmill trainers, especially, could benefit from this. So they can push a beatable distance and move further with time. Veterans can use the same functionality to pick up pace, tone down, and/or push over new milestones in their wake.
Race Mode, meanwhile, is at your service to compare your current run to previous ones, so you know your overall progress in real-time. Zone utilizes that info to determine if you are pushing too hard and need to slow down a little, or are a tad slow so you can pick up the pace. In either case, the GPS sports watch innards will let you know—first with a pleasant vibration, and then on the display.
We like it that you can use the stats collected by the Runner, connect it to your Mac or PC and sync the data via USB connection to your custom online MySports website portal. Or upload the data directly to MapMyFitness and RunKeeper website portals, as well as upload files (in such formats as FIT) in case you are unable to do so directly.
That is quite similar to what you can do using the Garmin Forerunner 35 Garmin Connect app, but varying where the Garmin does not support third-party apps or web portals to link up with your Forerunner 35 device. You would need to switch to Garmin Forerunner 15 to do the latter.
After all is said and done, a poor battery life spoils an otherwise great device. TomTom keeps its Runner GPS watch packed with a decent 10-hour battery life. This is all good, although, it slips lower to an 8-hour one if you have to keep that back light on to run in the evening under the watchful guide of Night Mode.
Garmin Forerunner 35 maxes out battery use and empties its jar in just over 5 hours, three hours less than the TomTom Runner and two hours less than its successor, the Forerunner 15.
At this time, both the TomTom Runner and Garmin Forerunner 35 have successors. Garmin has the Forerunner 15, and TomTom the Multi-Sport GPS Sports Watch.
The one reason why that is the best thing that could happen is because prices of both predecessors deep. TomTom’s Runner GPS Sports Watch currently sells for as low as $89 (down from $199) on Amazon and $84.20 from $129.99 for Garmin’s Forerunner 35.
Both handheld, GPS navigators are great options for runners that are on a budget or for those that are just getting a feel for anything runners’ wearable. Both pack decent GPS signal receptors, data syncing and analysis capabilities, and come with a friendly price tag.
TomTom’s more premium price tag shows in the features list compared to Garmin’s Forerunner 35, though. Your TomTom will see you through almost all activity you throw at it—swimming, tread-milling, running, jogging, walking, pulse rating, you name it. We really like how the wireless sync with both the IOS and Android mobile device apps work—so seamlessly.
But, if you are searching for a reliable, basic GPS sports watch to accompany you on an eventful, check-pointed fitness journey, Garmin Forerunner 35 is a decent option. You will almost instantaneously love getting in tandem with your run stats every time you connect to a Mac or PC to access the best of Garmin Connect.
The third iteration of TomTom’s Spark line is a mighty fine GPS tracker. That’s especially true for runners, who also have the option of the version named the Runner 3 (identical to the Spark aside from different-coloured straps, and which you’ll probably find in dedicated running stores). There are four different iterations of the Spark 3 to consider, ranging from the basic GPS version (£120) up to the Cardio + Music (£220), which includes heart rate monitoring and space for 500 songs. You can also get the Spark 3 with just music or just heart rate tracking (both £170). We tested the Cardio + Music version.
Alongside the Spark 3 TomTom has released the Runner 3, which is exactly the same device except that it’s sold in running shops has different-coloured straps available. Whatever you call it, the Spark/Runner 3 is just about the best friend a runner could have.
The Spark 3 is packed full of other features designed to appeal to runners. It picks up GPS satellites pretty quickly (45-90 seconds, generally) so you’re not standing around for ages waiting to start your run (or bike ride). While on the go you can see all your stats – distance, time, current pace, average pace, heart rate – easily. Just make sure you occasionally look where you’re going.
The Spark is designed as a dedicated sports watch rather than an activity tracker, but it’s comfortable and stylish enough to do both and does a solid job of logging steps. Your daily and weekly totals are just a click away from the Spark and app’s home screens.
With GPS on, the Spark boasts a solid 11 hours of battery life, and without GPS enabled, it’ll last three weeks, so even frequent runners should find it gets them through a full week. If you’re cycling to work and back every day with the GPS running, it might need a midweek pick-me-up, but generally the battery is good enough that you won’t have to worry about it.
The TomTom Spark 3 is about as good a choice as you can make in the dedicated sports watch market, matching the features of Garmin and Polar’s comparable offerings, such as the Garmin Forerunner range and the Polar M400, and raising the bar with an excellent design and useful extras like the ability to store music and Route Exploration. The whole package offered by the Spark with Cardio + Music is tricky to beat at the price of £220.
